H+F GIVES A SHOUT OUT TO…

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital hosted Yoga Gives to

St. Jude Kids on Saturday, June 13, to raise funds for kids battling cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Unlike any other hospital, the majority of funding for St. Jude comes from individual contributions through programs like Yoga Gives to St. Jude Kids, ensuring that families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food — because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. Yoga enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels participated and raised more than $40,000.

Free Yoga in the Park & Book Signing Local author and yoga instructor Jennifer Williams-Fields will be teaching yoga and signing her first book, Creating a Joyful Life: Lessons I learned from Yoga and My Mom, Saturday, July 18, from 8:00 AM-1:00 PM at Millington’s Farmers Market. She has been teaching yoga since 2005 and is passionate about writing, traveling, public speaking, and being a fabulous single mother to six super kids. Her book is available on Amazon.

H+F FIT PICK:

Decoy Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Bone broth is the latest superfood trend sweeping the nation, and with good reason. It has some major healing powers. It cures leaky gut syndrome, protects joints, supports the immune system, aids in a good night’s rest, boosts energy, strengthens bones, and is a rich (and inexpensive) source for collagen — H+F’s favorite benefit! You can buy it in the organic section of the grocery store or make your own beneficial batch. Go to Epicurious. com for an easy nutritious recipe.

BONE BROTH

It may not be duck hunting season in the Mid-South, but Decoy is a perfect accompaniment for an afternoon pool party. With notes of papaya and mango on the nose and a long, crisp citrus zest finish, this medium bodied and balanced sauvignon blanc pairs well with shrimp, chicken, or pork kebobs on the grill. Serve nicely chilled. On sale $19.99.

An Old Club with a New Name You may remember Wimbledon Sportsplex, or, more recently, WellWorx. In late 2014 the owner of Jumping World LLC bought out the club with the intention of building the largest trampoline park in the Mid-South. They have an indoor track, pools, basketball court, racquetball courts, and an array of fitness classes for its members. They also have childcare and fitness classes just for kids. REIKI 101: GOOD VIBRATIONS Millions of people around the world and more than 800 hospitals across the country now incorporate holistic healing methods, such as Reiki, to supplement modern medicine for a wide variety of ailments. For some, Reiki improves sleep, reduces nausea, and improves anxiety during pregnancy. Even animals love to receive Reiki. The question remains for the uninitiated, “What is this Reiki, and how does it work?” The origins of Reiki lie in Japan, and much of the tradition has been kept secret, therefore most Reiki we see today is a combination of Eastern (Usui) and Western technique. The Usui Memorial, dated 1927, reads, “What you can naturally realize through cultivation and training is called ‘Virtue,’ and it is called ‘Merit’ to spread a method of leadership and relief and practice it.” Unlike modern medicine, which helps to heal the physical, Reiki is an energy-healing practice. The Japanese word Rei-ki roughly translates as “universal life energy” or “healing energy.” According to Shaun Sparacio, skilled Reiki practitioner at Delta Groove Yoga in Overton Square, “The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health describes Reiki as a complementary health approach in which practitioners place their hands lightly on or just above a person, with the goal of facilitating the person’s own healing response, and a return to a natural state of wholeness. Recipients of Reiki report feelings of relaxation, well-being, and a reduction of pain and stress. This practice has no religious affiliation, however, feeling a sense of your own inner spiritual connection is not uncommon.” It is also not uncommon for a Reiki practitioner to pray or meditate before a session.

HEALTH+FITNESS | July 2015

This personal, compassionate care experience is similar to meditation, only someone else is guiding their positive energy through their hands to supplement your own peaceful

10

thoughts and to clarify the mind. Alma Corla, a certified Memphis-area Reiki Master, is qualified to certify other students to give Reiki. “Reiki works at the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels,” said Corla. “Very relaxing, Reiki releases blocks of energy so the healing energy can circulate more freely, and works at the root cause of the disease.” My personal experience has been just that, a relaxed and increased circulation of healing energy. With three Reiki sessions, I had with three different practitioners in the past year, each of whom made me feel safe and cared for, my breathing focused and thoughts clear. Energy channeled through hands was evident, as heat could be felt from inches away. The following day, I experienced amplified symptoms of the issues and then healing over the following week. As someone who as TMJ, I had headaches, and skin issues flared up and then receded. Anxiety and stress left instantly and did not return for days. I also noticed a feeling of attunement, or self-awareness, as I was healing.

First-timers should know that Reiki has proven safe for almost 100 years (developed in 1922 by Mikao Usui), is not a replacement for a cure, but meant to complement treatment, and can be affordable. Expect to lie on a massage table (comfortable clothing is best), with or without a blanket, in a quiet space with the lights off. You may notice your breathing and body temperature, and feel an overwhelming sense of peace and tranquility. Who wouldn’t love a little more peace and tranquility?

SKIN CANCER:

EARLY DETECTION IS KEY FOR A CURE As a population, we are getting more and more sun exposure. We are also living longer. As a result, the incidences of skin cancer are increasing. The three most common types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Precancerous growths known as actinic keratosis are also becoming more prevalent. It is important to recognize these lesions early. Early treatment can most often result in a cure.

can ulcerate. Squamous cell carcinomas can originate in actinic keratosis. This is especially so in older people. The treatment of choice for squamous cell carcinoma is excision. The more severe squamous cell carcinomas require Mohs surgery. Radiation and photodynamic therapy can also be used to treat some squamous cell carcinomas. Again, like basal cell carcinomas, if treated early, there is an excellent chance of a cure.

Over exposure to ultra-violet light is the greatest predisposing factor to the development of skin cancer. We spend more and more time outdoors. It is essential to use sunscreens with a sun protectant factor of 30 or more. It is important to try and avoid the mid-day sun between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. When outdoors, it is essential to reapply sunscreen regularly. This is especially so if you are in and out of the water. We now have sun protectant clothing that can help protect from the sun. Wearing a wide brim hat is also helpful. Sun protective lip balms are also very important. It is imperative to remember that water, snow, and sand can reflect a great amount of sun, and it is especially important to be very protective in these environments.

HEALTH+FITNESS | July 2015

ACTINIC KERATOSIS can be precancerous lesions. Actinic appear on sun-exposed areas. They are raised, hard, scaly lesions. Some actinic keratosis is not visible to the eye. We have come a long way in the treatment of actinic keratosis. They can be treated with cryosurgery, certain topical medicines, and photodynamic light therapy. These treatments are even able to eradicate lesions that are not clearly seen.

12

BASAL CELL CARCINOMAS are the most common kind of skin cancer. These lesions arise within the top layer of the skin. Again, the sun-exposed areas of the body, particularly the face, neck, and arms, are the most common locations of this type of skin cancer. Basal cell carcinomas often appear as raised lesions. Sometimes blood vessels can be seen on the surface of a basal cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinomas are often skin colored or salmon colored. However, they can have dark areas in the lesion. They often have a dimpled appearance, and tend to bleed when traumatized. A basal cell carcinoma is also called a rodent ulcer. It is a lesion that usually bleeds and won’t heal. If treated early, basal cell carcinomas can also always be eradicated. Surgical procedures include excision, curettage and electrodessication, or in more advance cases, Mohs surgery. X-ray treatment is occasionally used to treat basal cell carcinomas. There are also new oral medications for advanced basal cell carcinomas. SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMAS also tend to appear on sun-exposed areas. These are the second most common types of skin cancer. Again, face, neck, ears, and back of the hands are the areas these lesions are likely to develop. However, like basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas can appear on any part of the body. A squamous cell carcinoma is often a rough area that occasionally bleeds. Sometimes these cancers

depth of the melanoma, lymph nodes have to be checked to see if there has been metastatic spread. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice. There are many new medications to treat metastatic melanoma. Chemotherapy and targeted gene therapy are now available. Immunotherapy is being used with some degree of success. Again, it is most important to detect a melanoma in an early stage.

Tanning beds should also be avoided. Recent studies have shown that there is a greater increased chance of developing melanoma when regularly using tanning beds. Young people often feel indestructible. Their idea of the future is next weekend’s date. We must teach everyone that sun exposure and ultraviolet ray exposure are accumulative. The more one is exposed, the greater chance of developing skin cancer and premature aging. The fairer one’s complexion, the more susceptible they are to ultra-violet rays. We must make sun protection an integral part our daily lives. MALIGNANT MELANOMA is the most dangerous type of skin cancer, and it can spread rapidly. Melanomas can be fatal if not treated early. It is important to try to recognize A, B, C, D, and Es of melanoma. A melanoma is often asymmetric, the border is irregular, the color is irregular, the diameter is greater than 6mm, and it evolves. Any nevus or mole that changes on your skin needs to be evaluated. A mole that darkens, bleeds, or enlarges should be checked. Melanomas can bleed and itch. The treatment of choice is wide excision. Sometimes, depending on the

Finally, it is important to be checked regularly. If you have had a skin cancer, you have a greater chance of getting another skin cancer. We are living longer, and we need to do everything we can to enjoy long and healthy lives. Dr. Robert J. Kaplan is a dermatologist in private practice, and is an Assistant Professor of Medicine-Dermatology at UTHSC. To schedule an appointment, call (901) 682-3273.

HUGH FLANDERS

Rising 2nd grader at Woodland Presbyterian School. Lives with mom, dad, big sister, and dog, Mick. I like soccer, baseball, swim team, and running. I enjoy running because it gets my feet going, makes me healthy, and helps me to be a better soccer and baseball player. My running goal is to get faster. I like to run with dad on the trails. This summer I did the Fleet Feet Sports Running Camp. I liked the relays and the water balloon games. Getting a medal at the finish line of the mile run was great! If I had a superpower I would want to time travel. When I grow up I want to be a rock star. My role model is my dad. I am most proud of working hard at sports and school.

THE NEW NEW ALBANY Looking for a day trip this summer? Look no further than New Albany, Mississippi. This thriving town a short 70-mile drive south of Memphis is no longer just the home of Nobel-Prize-winning-author William Faulkner, but a booming city with something for everyone to enjoy. Home to the new Tanglefoot Trail—a 44-mile paved, non-motorized trail—New Albany is the perfect destination for outdoor and fitness enthusiasts. Stretching from New Albany to Houston, Mississippi, the trail opened in 2013 and is Mississippi’s longest Rails to Trails project, following an abandoned rail line built by the grandfather of William Faulkner. More than 125 years since the railroad’s completion, the trail is named after the Tanglefoot, a 10-wheeled engine used as the line was being constructed in the area. Similar to the Shelby Farms Greenline in Memphis, the relatively flat path has quickly become a popular route for bikers, runners, and hikers. The trail is open half an hour before sunrise and closes half an hour past sunset. You can bring your own bike or rent one in town.

Aside from the trail, there are a number of other outdoor attractions and activities to consider in New Albany. The Wolf Howl Animal Preserve, 33 acres of forests and fields, is home to six adult wolves and oftentimes their puppies, making it a great educational experience for adults and kids alike. You can watch a scent-rolling and howling demonstration, although, since the wolves are not trained, they may not always “perform” as hoped. Group tours are available by appointment May 1-October 31.

By Christin Yates

From dining and shopping to attractions and more, this quaint Southern town is gaining notoriety for being a must-visit in the Deep South. With a number of antique shops, boutiques, outdoor retailers, trails, and restaurants, New Albany is the perfect family getaway this summer. Go to VisitNewAlbany.com for more information.

For a bit of history in the great outdoors, visit the Ingomar Indian Mounds, just a mile off the Tanglefoot Trail and also easily accessible by car. Created nearly 2,000 years ago and excavated in 1885 by the Smithsonian Institution, the mounds boast the tallest Indian mound in the Southeast United States. The complex consists of one large mound surrounded by twelve smaller mounds. Free and open to the public, the mounds are also host to a number of events, such as stargazing, drum circles, and interpretive programs.

TO GET FAST, YOU HAVE TO RUN FAST Sounds simple, right? In a sense, it is. By running faster at a higher intensity, your overall average pace will improve. But not every run should be at your fastest pace. And not every run should be at a hard effort. Consider doing one or two hard workouts or intervals each week to get the most bang for your buck. From elite athletes to beginners, every runner can benefit from interval training or track workouts. Shorter, intense workouts are easier to fit in a busy schedule — such as during your lunch break or during a week when work is slammed. High intensity workouts can also help burn fat more quickly — the effect of all that intense exertion kicks your body’s repair cycle into hyperdrive. That means you burn more fat and calories in the 24-hour period following a high-intensity workout than you do after an easier, steadier run. Plus, high-intensity intervals increase your metabolism. By Marcia Scott

INTERVALS EXPLAINED Although most interval training is done on a track with a watch or smartphone to monitor your distance and pace, you can do interval training just about anywhere, including the treadmill. So, what exactly are intervals? Intervals are repetitions of high-speed/intensity running followed by periods of rest or recovery. For example: 8x400 (one lap around a track) with 200 meters of recovery In this case you would run 400 meters at a high intensity pace, jog or walk for 200 meters, and then repeat eight times. If you don’t want to think about it in terms of yards or laps around a track, consider doing two minutes of hard effort, followed by one minute of rest, and repeat eight times.

HEALTH+FITNESS | July 2015

“WELL, AT WHAT PACE SHOULD I RUN?”

16

While the length of the intervals is important, it’s equally as critical to train at the appropriate pace. Losing Inches, Gaining Everything by Alex Driver. Photo by Sarah McAlexander.

“I thought that I was happy until I changed my lifestyle and realized how much I have missed out on my whole life.” Stacy Blackwell, 37, has lived most of her life believing that she was truly happy. She was overweight for most of her adult life, and was always considered to be chubby throughout her adolescence. She got caught up in all of the “yo-yo” diets, and even tried Weight Watchers at 13 years old. In 2005, at 265 pounds, Blackwell decided she needed to change.

avoided healthy foods, found any excuse to not work out, and had difficulty walking up a flight of stairs. Now, she is in the gym six days a week at 5:00 AM with her training team (aka the “5 AM crazies”), and food is no longer a reward; it is a way to fuel her body. She parks at the end of the parking lot, and she always takes the stairs. The biggest change, however, is how confident she feels in her skin.

HEALTH+FITNESS | July 2015

Blackwell’s wellness has been an uphill journey. She has tried various procedures to help with her weight loss. In 2005 she underwent lap-band surgery and lost 80-90 pounds. However, because she was uneducated on the importance of fitness and nutrition, she had difficulty maintaining her weight loss. Blackwell was changing her portion sizes, but still eating the same foods. Finally, she decided to quit smoking, and managed to gain every pound of weight back.

18

In 2013 Blackwell found the Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method at Total Health Wellness Center, which really kick started her true health transformation. Once she lost 60 pounds, she looked to Zerona, a cold-laser treatment that gets rid of unwanted fat from the hips, waists, and thighs to help boost the weight loss. Through Ideal Protein and Zerona, she found a mass amount of inches shed. Blackwell has done a total of five rounds of Zerona, and has had incredible results. In her most recent treatment, Blackwell lost four inches around her midsection and nearly two inches around her thigh.

Stacy Blackwell Before After losing 150 inches and 95 lbs “I did not have confidence before,” Blackwell said. “It is one of those things that you don’t know what you were missing out on until you get to the end of it. My confidence level is pretty much through the roof now!” In total, Stacy has lost 150 inches and 95 pounds.

“Surgery has never been an option for me, and I do not even need it,” Blackwell said. “If you look at me without clothes on, I have no excess skin.”

Her biggest attribution to maintaining a consistent workout regimen is her workout buddies at DAC. “I probably would not still be going to the gym if it wasn’t for the camaraderie with my fellow workout people,” Blackwell said. “I have my own little family at the gym now that pushes me forward.”

Blackwell’s life has done a total 180, and she is now fully dedicated to her fitness and nutrition regimen. Before, she

To the people dealing with her previous struggles, Blackwell has one piece of advice: Just keep pushing, and don’t ever give up.

“My confidence level is pretty much through the roof.”

HORMONES

Can’t live with them. Can’t live without them. Simply stated, a hormone is any chemical signal produced in one part of the body that signals a certain response or regulates activity in another part of the body. Keeping your hormones balanced and in check, by having the appropriate levels at the appropriate times, is essential for overall health and well-being. Evaluating hormone levels in both men and women has become an essential part of the wellness and preventive care that I provide as a physician. Through the optimization of critical, key hormones in both men and women, we are able to combat illness, stress, and aging by taking a proactive approach. In the traditional medical model, little care is provided to help patients go above and beyond to obtain their highest level of health possible. Patients are often reassured that their lab values are “normal” when they fall within the average range. For hormone levels, often “normal” only means that your hormones are just as bad as everyone else’s. Why settle for average or normal when we can safely, effectively, and affordably help you become optimal?

HEALTH+FITNESS | July 2015

Thyroid function is a critical area in which optimal is clearly the best route to improving health and quality of life. I recently had a patient tell me her thyroid function has always been “right on the border” of being too low, so she was never treated. Another way of stating this is that for the past several years her thyroid function has been “barely adequate.” Is that any way to live the healthiest life possible? Basic lab tests will not always show an abnormal thyroid function, even when the patient is clearly experiencing symptoms of decreased thyroid levels.

20

These symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, dry skin and hair, depression, and mood disorders. Many patients under my care have improved tremendously by treating their hypothyroid symptoms despite “normal” lab testing. When we help regulate and balance

the body’s hormone levels we are able to address many root causes, and not just treat the symptoms. Most people look at hypertension, obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, PCOS, endometriosis, infertility, fatigue, and mood disorders as diseases in and of themselves, and not as symptoms of an underlying hormonal dysfunction. It is always rewarding when we are able to safely discontinue prescription medications, because we have been able to achieve a superior result using natural, bioidentical hormones. Maintaining excellent progesterone levels in women and testosterone levels in men is very important for quality of life and overall well-being. Many women come to me after trying diet pills, antidepressants, antianxiety medications, and sleeping pills without much improvement in their symptoms. By correcting an underlying progesterone deficiency, we can address most of their concerns. I see a similar improvement in middle-aged men who aren’t deficient in antidepressant, but are lacking adequate testosterone levels to feel their best. Once you start to feel better, we go one step further. We look at the lifestyle factors that may have contributed to your metabolic dysfunction in the first place. We have a registered dietician on staff to work with you on a customized nutrition plan should you need help incorporating new lifestyle changes. Apart from nutrition, aging, stress, exercise, sleep, and hydration, underlying autoimmune conditions and a toxic environment are some of the other main factors that influence health and well-being. We won’t overwhelm you by trying to tackle everything at once, but over time we can work with you to help you create balance and regain control of your life and overall health. Your customized plan, unique to only you, will serve as a roadmap for recovery, healing, and optimal health.

JEREMY DRAPER, M.D. Dr. Draper graduated from the University of Memphis in 2004, and UT College of Medicine in 2008. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor for UT College of Medicine. After finishing residency he completed an additional year of training in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). Dr. Draper is the Medical Director for WellFit Medicine and Nutrition and Glo Medical Aesthetics. He is also a co-owner of Metabolic CrossFit and a CrossFit Level 1 trainer. WellFit Medicine is located at 600 Madison Avenue. To make an appointment visit WellFitMedicine.com.

WHY HORMONES ARE SO IMPORTANT Are there times when you feel like you’re running on empty? A good analogy for hormone levels is to compare them to a fuel gauge on your car. Many people are driving around almost on empty. The low-fuel warning light may not have gone off yet in the form of illness and disease, but you can tell something is not quite right. Most hormone levels do decline with age, and stress can lower your hormone levels as well. The body has to make the stress hormone, cortisol, out of something. Since many of your hormones share common precursors, many of the beneficial hormones responsible for maintaining health and well-being can become depleted when you are in survival mode and cortisol is high. What if there was a way to top off your tank, and provide a buffer against the unexpected potholes and roadblocks that you will face in life?

BIOIDENTICAL HORMONES

Unlocking the Secret to Anti-Aging

by Lisa Street.

BHRT (Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy) Bioidentical hormones are identical in molecular structure to hormones made by the human body. They are not found in nature in this form, but are created in laboratories, and some are even extracted from plants. The goal of BHRT is to restore youthful hormone levels in a way that safely and effectively combats symptoms of disease and aging. Optimal hormone levels are essential for optimal health in both men and women of any age. When speaking specifically about skin and hormones, it is important to remember that hormones are constantly fluctuating each month, as well as over an entire lifespan. These constant fluctuations can wreak havoc on the skin. Certain skin changes could also be a sign of an underlying health problem. In terms of skin aging, there are two types of factors:

Working in the Medical Aesthetic field, I come into contact with patients (the majority female) ranging in age from mid-20s to 70s on a daily basis. Consistently I hear various complaints regarding skin issues, such as acne or dry skin, as well as other issues, such as lack of energy, trouble sleeping, or decreased libido.

She was smiling, full of energy, vibrant, and generally just very happy. I stopped, looked at her, and asked, “Who the heck are you?” She smiled and said, “I have found the most amazing doctor, Dr. Jeremy Draper. He is in the Midtown/downtown area at WellFit. He is an expert in BHRT (Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy), and he has made me feel human again by regulating my hormones.” I was immediately intrigued, and thought, “Wow! Almost every one of my clients may benefit from a consultation with Dr. Draper.”

INTRINSIC: Genetic predisposition, chronic inflammation, and hormonal imbalance Obviously we have more control over the extrinsic factors by simply choosing to lead a healthier lifestyle and wearing sunscreen. It has been determined that a poor diet, particularly one high in sugars, starches, and other processed carbohydrates, can exacerbate hormonal imbalances. These imbalances can lead to skin issues, insulin resistance, and metabolic disorders, such as diabetes and PCOS. Additionally, consistent exercise and maintaining a healthy body weight are also important to optimal hormonal health. It is becoming more and more evident that we do have control over at least a portion of the intrinsic factors by maintaining hormonal balance through BHRT.

ESTROGEN is a hormone responsible for skin thickness, moisture, structural integrity, and collagen production. Estrogen can increase the production of hyaluronic acid, which helps maintain fluid balance. One of the most popular injectable “plumping” products in aesthetics is Juvéderm® by Allergan, which is made of hyaluronic acid. One unwanted side effect of too much estrogen is skin hyperpigmentation. This condition is termed melasma, and may appear when taking oral contraceptives or during pregnancy. PROGESTERONE is a hormone that helps balance the effects of estrogen on the skin, and can prevent breakouts from occurring when there is too much estrogen present. Progesterone is also a natural antidepressant, antianxiety hormone, and sleep aid. There are numerous benefits to optimal progesterone levels, which both directly and indirectly benefit the skin. TESTOSTERONE is a hormone with effects on the skin similar to estrogen. Optimal testosterone levels can benefit women by producing skin that is firmer, tighter, and has a healthier appearance. Increased muscle tone with testosterone helps to offset the decrease in subcutaneous fat seen at optimal levels. Testosterone also restores a more youthful glow by increasing oil production that is often diminished in dry, thin, dull, aging skin. THYROID hormone helps regulate skin quality, overall energy levels, and metabolism in general. Skin in patients with low and even suboptimal thyroid function tends to look tired, dull, dry, and puffy. Feeling cold all the time, or having chronic dry skin, thin hair, and brittle nails can indicate that thyroid levels may be too low. Educating patients and helping them understand how hormones can affect both their skin and health is paramount. With all the research now devoted to hormonal effects on the body and mind, we are seeing that hormones are truly powerful and are involved in almost every component of human biology and behavior.

Case in point, one of my very best female clients is 48 years old. Her main concern for her skin was a noticeable increase in wrinkles and overall dryness. She is beautiful, in amazing shape, and always dressed to the nines. I could tell, however, at times when she would come in for treatments she seemed stressed, agitated, fearful, and sometimes even in tears. I would do my best to comfort her and offer her positive energy. On one visit in particular, I immediately noticed a difference in her entire being.

The city’s oldest competitive swim program is changing the aquatics culture in Memphis by Pamela Routh

When Arlechia Nisby gathers her swim team at the Millington YMCA to call out the next practice set, she’s well aware that some of those kids were once deathly afraid of the water. “Two or three of these guys wouldn’t leave the shallow end last year,” said coach Nisby. “This season they’re competing in 50-meter events.” The headwaters for Nisby’s path to swimming are in the competition pool at the University of Memphis Campus Recreation Center through a program called Memphis Tiger Swimming (MTS). She competed on the year-round team for several years through high school, and today she’s passing her love for swimming on to the kids at the Millington Y. Founded in 1970 under the vision of coach Richard Fadgen, the (then) Memphis State Swim Club was a mix of MSU students and local high school athletes competing in AAU leagues. They toiled in the outdoor pool by the campus recreation center, and dreamed of putting Memphis on the map of big-time swim cities.

HEALTH+FITNESS | July 2015

Forty five years later, Memphis Tiger Swimming has trained more than 4,000 local swimmers, placing nearly 200 on NCAA swim teams across the country and thrusting four onto the Olympic stage. The MTS Olympic roster includes Michelle Richardson (Los Angeles 1984), Jon Olsen (Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996), Gabrielle Rose (Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000) and Gil Stovall (Beijing 2008), and they make Memphis one of the highest per-capita producers of Olympic swimmers in the country.

22

But the program became a purpose on May 31, 2008, opening day for the Memphis municipal pools, when two teens at two different pools in underprivileged neighborhoods drowned. It could have just been two more kids in two more neighborhoods where African-American teens died, memorialized only by the morning news crawl scrolling mostly unnoticed across local television sets. This time the right people noticed. “I turned off the TV to take my daughter to swim practice, and couldn’t stop thinking about those kids,” said Anthony Norris, president of the Memphis Tiger Swimming Board of Directors. “While she’s competing for regional cuts, they were just trying to enjoy their summer not 15 minutes from our pool.”

Statistics suggest those tragedies were hardly isolated. According to a study by the University of Memphis in 2010, nearly 60 percent of African-American children are unable to swim—nearly twice as many as their Caucasian counterparts. So it’s not surprising that the youth drowning rate in ethnically diverse communities is two to three times higher than the national average. Those figures and the 2008 tragedies gave birth to Splash Mid-South; a coalition led by Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and Safe Kids Mid-South that includes Memphis Tiger Swimming, the University of Memphis, the YMCA of Memphis and the Mid-South, and the City of Memphis. Pooling their resources, the program’s mission is to provide watersafety instruction, swim lessons, and proper pool supervision for minority children in underserved neighborhoods. It also aims to introduce participants with athletic interests to the competitive side of swimming. “If we’re going to change the culture, we have

to change the perception of swimming as just a country club sport, and provide access to kids of all abilities and socioeconomic levels,” said Norris. “The University has the only 50-meter pool inside the 240 loop, so we’re ideally located to help our city develop a pipeline from basic water safety to increasing numbers of African-American swim athletes.” After six years Splash Mid-South has provided free or discounted swim lessons to more than 5,000 at-risk kids at pools across the city (including the U of M). More than 200 lifeguards have received additional training and more than 400 adults have received free CPR training. Splash developmental teams have introduced more than 250 kids to the growing sport of swimming, and the Splash diversity swim team is 50 members strong and growing. “One of my kids may go to the Olympics someday,” said Coach Nisby. “But more important, none of my kids are likely to be a drowning statistic.”
