Fighting Back Against Parkinson’s: Rock Steady Boxing Local woman, Susan McClain, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at age 60. She was saddled with pain and couldn’t even stand up on her own. She learned how other people with the illness were taking control of their bodies with boxing. Susan began the Rock Steady Boxing program at UFC Cordova. After a few weeks she began to see her mobility and strength return. Susan shares, “Cheryl and Curtis at UFC have been great. I look forward to every workout and feel better after training. When I started Rock Steady Boxing I could not jump rope at all. Now I am up to five jumps and have learned how to get myself off the floor into an upright position on my own.” She no longer feels alone and has gained confidence knowing that others with the disease are continuing to fight. That support has made all the difference for Susan.

8

Rock Steady Boxing is the first and only boxing program of its kind in the country. It’s a noncontact, boxing inspired fitness class that helps people with Parkinson’s gain power, strength, and flexibility to improve their everyday lives. It was founded in 2006 by former Marion County Prosecutor, Scott C. Newman, who is living with Parkinson’s. Newman began intense one-on-one boxing training just a few years after he was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s at the age of 40. Newman witnessed the dramatic improvement in his physical health, agility, and daily functioning through the intense high energy workouts. Newman’s quality of life improved

dramatically in a short time and Rock Steady Boxing was born. Rock Steady Boxing’s mission is to empower people with Parkinson’s disease to fight back. The methods and exercises used by Rock Steady Boxing have been scientifically proven to help with the specific symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The curriculum of the Rock Steady Method is designed to specifically address the symptoms that occur with Parkinson’s disease. All Rock Steady participants go through a significant assessment and screening procedure before being allowed to participate. The program has been very successful, spreading across the country to empower the lives of Parkinson’s patients.

Rock Steady Boxing is offered locally through the UFC Gym in Cordova and the UFC Gym Germantown. Contact Cheryl or Curtis at UFC Cordova and Nick Davis at Germantown UFC to learn more about the program. Lettuce Eat Changes Name to Wild Beet Salad Company Second Location Opening Late Summer in East Memphis Fresh chopped salad and wrap restaurant, Lettuce Eat, is not only opening a new location in East Memphis, the popular Germantown eatery and catering business also has a new name: Wild Beet Salad Company. Owner Kelcie Hamm made the decision to change the name of her thriving healthy lifestyle restaurant from Lettuce Eat to Wild Beet Salad Company after finding out the Chicago-based Lettuce Entertain You has the rights to use the word lettuce as a verb. While Hamm was disappointed in having to change the name of her now two year-old business, which opened in April 2014, she’s making the most of her restaurant’s new name, Wild Beet Salad Company. She recently started using organic free-range chicken in her salads and wraps for the same price and she’s introducing a new beet salsa to her customers soon. When Wild Beet Salad Company’s new website is completed, customers will be able to order their lunches and dinners online.

Wild Beet Salad Company’s second location at 4715 Poplar Avenue in East Memphis at Knickerbocker Plaza opens late summer. Wild Beet Salad Company, formerly known as Lettuce Eat, is currently located at 6641 Poplar in the Carrefour at Kirby Woods Shopping Center. Kelcie Hamm decided to open her fresh salad restaurant in Memphis a few years after returning home from fashion merchandising school in Manhattan, New York, where she ate a chopped salad for lunch nearly every day. While earning her degree in fashion business administration at LIM College, Hamm interned at Self Magazine, and she worked at Church Health Center for two years before leaving to fulfill her dream of owning her own business.

Don’t Let Joint Pain Slow You Down Joints are part of almost every daily activity. Basic movements like walking, squatting, bending, turning, and moving your arms involve knee, hip, and elbow joints. Normally, joints work together in harmony and without causing pain. However, when the joint becomes diseased or injured, pain is often the first indicator.

The following are a few of the most common reasons for joint pain: OSTEOARTHRITIS (OA): Also known as “degenerative arthritis” because it is a gradual wearing out or breakdown of cartilage in the joint. If enough cartilage wears away, bones can start to rub against one another, resulting in stiffness and pain. OA usually occurs in people 50 years and older. RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS (RA): A chronic inflammatory disorder that causes chemical changes in the synovium. The synovial fluid begins to destroy cartilage. This cartilage loss will also cause stiffness and pain. POST TRAUMATIC ARTHRITIS: May occur after an injury if the bone and cartilage do not heal correctly. If the joint is no longer aligned correctly, this irregularity could lead to future wear on joint surfaces. AVASCULAR NECROSIS: Can occur when the joint is deprived of its normal blood supply. Without adequate nutrition from the blood, the bones structure could weaken or collapse and damage cartilage.

Fortunately, there are many treatment options to help alleviate joint pain. In order to determine optimal treatment, a physical evaluation is the first step. Orthopedic evaluations generally involve going over your medical history and performing a physical examination, X-rays, tests as needed. Based on the diagnosis, there are several treatment options which might include lifestyle modifications, non-surgical interventions, or surgery. Most often, conservative treatment is the best answer. The goal is for you to enjoy life as pain free as possible. Daily activity is essential to your overall mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. 5 Things You Should Know About Dry Needling

By Brad Cole, DC, MS, CSCS

Dry needling is becoming increasingly popular as a drug-free treatment for pain, yet it is not free of risk. Like any healthcare procedure, it is only as safe and effective as the healthcare professional providing the treatment. If you are considering options for a movement-related pain, the answers to these 5 questions will help put dry needling into the right context. 1. WHAT IS DRY NEEDLING? Dry needling is a skillful therapy that uses a thin, filiform needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying muscular trigger points or muscular and connective tissues for the management of neuromusculoskeletal pain and movement problems. As dry needling has evolved, several various terms for the therapy have emerged. The general term, “dry needling,” includes “intramuscular stimulation,” “intramuscular manual therapy,” “functional dry needling (FDN),” and “trigger point needling.” 2. HOW DID DRY NEEDLING START? Dry needling has an odd name that differentiates it from “wet” needling for injecting medication. As early as the 1900s, physician researchers wrote about palpable tenderness in the muscles causing orthopedic problems. Through the 1930s and 1940s, researchers documented predictable pain referral patterns coming from muscular trigger points. Physicians at this time treated muscular trigger points with a hypodermic needle and injectable medication. In 1940, the father of manual medicine, Karel Lewit, MD, DSc., demonstrated how the simple insertion of a “dry” needle carried more therapeutic benefit, than the injected medication. Over time the “dry” hypodermic needle was replaced with a smaller needle that is still used today. 3. IS DRY NEEDLING LIKE ACUPUNCTURE? The only similarity between dry needling and acupuncture is the tool—a solid filament needle. Acupuncture is an excellent health system, which differs from dry needling in its assessment, applications, and intended goals. 4. IS DRY NEEDLING SAFE? Like any therapy that has an effect, there is a possibility of unintended side effects. It is important to have a discussion about the benefits, risks, and other treatment alternatives for any type of treatment. With regards to dry needling, 1–10% of people may experience needling insertion pain, muscle soreness, fatigue, or bruising. Anyone with a needle phobia, history of pneumothorax, metal allergy, vascular disease, or abnormal bleeding tendency should discuss this with their doctor performing the dry needling. In the hands of a skilled physician or therapist, dry needling can be a relatively safe and very effective treatment that follows a careful examination and diagnosis.

5. WHAT CAN BE TREATED WITH DRY NEEDLING? The majority of nerve, muscle and joint pains are secondary to a movement problem. Dry needling performed in conjunction with other manual and rehabilitative therapies is an excellent way to improve range of motion and decrease muscle or tendon pain. So, needling can be incorporated in someone’s treatment plan for the treatment of headaches, neck pain, back pain, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, shin splints, hip/groin pain, shoulder pain, and many other movement related pain. Dry needling does a great job of deactivating muscular trigger points. These are tender knots in a muscle that can refer pain to distant body areas. For example, someone with pain radiating down the thigh to the ankle may have a trigger point at the side of their hip that is only painful to deep palpation. The brief insertion of a needle into this trigger point results in a twitch of the muscle, immediate relaxation of the trigger point, and subsequent reduction of radiating symptoms to the leg. Dr. Brad Cole is a doctor of chiropractic with a master’s degree in rehabilitation. He has 60hrs of Functional Dry Needling post-graduate training and is certified as a Level 2 practitioner by Kinetacore. You can read more of his articles and ask questions at ColePainTherapyGroup.com and DrBradCole.com.

Sunscreen: Fact vs. Fiction Tips for your Best Summer Skin

By Carla Morgan M.A., LME

There are cream based and spray sunscreens, over-the-counter and professional options, and SPF from 15 all the way to 100. With hundreds of options for sun protection, which one is the best choice for your skin? Below we sort out common skincare misconceptions to help you find the best products to keep your skin safe and healthy.

FICTION

Everyone needs to use 100% sunblock. The FDA does not allow manufacturers to advertise products as sunblock. Nothing can block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreen either absorbs or reflects the sun’s rays using chemical or physical ingredients. Look for ingredients such as oxybenzone, avobenzone or zinc oxide to protect from UVA rays. Products formulated with octinoxate, octisalate, or titanium dioxide protect the skin from UVB rays. TAKE AWAY: Don’t be afraid to ask a professional for help in making the correct sunscreen choice.

FACT

Sun exposure causes 85% of all aging. The sun has the greatest impact on how our skin ages. Its ultraviolet rays fall into one of three categories: UVA, UVB and UVC. • U VA rays cause you to age by breaking down the skin’s collagen and elastin, resulting in wrinkles and sagging. UVA can penetrate glass, so you aren’t safe in your car! • U VB rays cause burning or tanning rays. In large doses, UVB can lead to melanoma and other types of skin cancer. • U VC rays are absorbed by the ozone and never reach earth.

12

TAKE AWAY: Use a broad or full-spectrum sunscreen that filters or absorbs both UVA and UVB rays.

FICTION

OTC sunscreen is just as good as professional sunscreen. Professional sunscreens purchased from a medical doctor or medical spa are formulated with higher purity ingredients and generally include anti-aging, hydrating, and skin-conditioning components. They come in several forms, including makeup with UVA and UVB blocking ingredients. Sunscreens purchased at a regular store also work and generally come as a spray or lotion. • Recommended OTC: Aveeno sunscreen causes less skin irritation. • Recommended Professional: Image Prevention+Daily Matte Moisturizer Oil Free SPF 32 and EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46. TAKE AWAY: Different skin conditions work better with different sunscreens, especially if you have sensitive skin.

FACT

SPF 30 is just as effective as SPF 45. SPF stands for sun protection factor. The number associated with SPF tells you what percentage of the sun’s rays are absorbed or reflected. An SPF 30 sunscreen blocks 96.7% of rays while an SPF 45 blocks 97.8%. The difference is insignificant. A sunscreen with a higher SPF also has a higher concentration of active ingredients which could lead to skin irritation. TAKE AWAY: A higher SPF is not always better. Aim to apply SPF 30, 15 minutes before going outside and then reapply every two hours.

FICTION

Darker skin doesn’t need sunscreen. Just like pale skin, darker skin has elastin and collagen that can be weakened by UVA rays. Dark skin also has an epidermis that can tan and burn. Everyone is at risk of sun damage. All skin tones need sun protection and are very susceptible to hyperpigmentation, or uneven skin tone. Sun exposure can cause this and any lightening treatments would be futile without sun protection. TAKE AWAY: Every skin color and skin type needs protection from the sun.

Say Farewell to a Double Chin with Kybella According to a survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, 67% of people said they are bothered by submental fullness, otherwise known as a double chin. They make you look heavier and older than you actually are and cannot always be removed by diet and exercise alone. Men and women of all ages, weights, and ethnicities can have one. Kybella is a new injectable available at medical spas that eliminates a double chin in only two to four treatments. It’s the first and only FDA approved nonsurgical treatment that contours and improves the appearance of submental fullness. The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that is involved in the breakdown of dietary fat. Kybella is injected directly into the fat under the chin using small needles. Once the fat cells are destroyed, they cannot store or accumulate fat again, so re-treatment is not necessary. Kybella is a 15-20 minute in-office treatment performed six to eight weeks apart for two to four sessions. There is minimal discomfort and the most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, or hardness near the treatment site. Side effect last only about four or five days, so consider your social calendar and work commitments when making an appointment. According to Kybella studies, “After being treated with Kybella, patients reported improvement in self perception—including feeling happier and younger, less embarrassed, less self-conscious, less overweight, and less bothered by their double chin based on their chin profiles.” Lisa Street is a Nurse Practitioner and owner of Glo Medical Aesthetics. POLO on PAVEMENT

By Laurenne Hom Photo by Ziggy Mack

Memphis cyclists ushering in the next generation of polo In the pale twilight of a cloudy evening, the thunderous crack of a mallet echoes at the corner of Cooper and York. Several pedestrians look up from their phones and hurry past, avoiding eye contact with the rowdy gang of bikers in the Bluff City Sports parking lot across from Aldo’s and Memphis Made Brewing Company. The cyclists circle like a pack of sharks, preying on a small orange ball that ricochets across the asphalt. Another player takes a swing and her mallet connects, sending the ball flying down the homegrown court enclosed by a two-foot plywood barrier; the ball misses the goal by mere inches. Every Wednesday and Sunday night, the parking lot at Bluff City Sports transforms into the home of Memphis Hardcourt Bike Polo. What began in 2009 with a handful of people has grown to about 15 regulars who show up to practice and compete. Hardcourt Bike Polo has been a growing trend across the US since the early 2000s and besides the 150 or so American teams, players can be found in over 30 countries. Since 2009, rules have been standardized and dozens of regional tournaments take place every year, leading up to national and international competitions. Six bikes tango across the court, while the rest of the team sips beer from camping chairs along the sidelines. Hardcourt Bike Polo mirrors traditional horse polo, but with a strong resemblance to street hockey. The game begins with a joust, both teams charging from either side to reach the ball in the center of the court. If a player falls from their bike or sets a foot on the ground, they must “dab” the side of the court before resuming play. Games last between 12-15 minutes, or until a team scores 5 points. The players come off the court sweating in their gear: knee and

“Bike Polo really evens the playing field for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re a guy or a girl, or athletic or overweight. As long as you put in the practice time, you can become really good at it.” elbow pads, gloves, and helmets— their armor against mallets that sometimes miss their mark and the concrete that could break a fall. The sport requires a well practiced level of coordination that comes only by time spent on the court. Even for more seasoned players, falling is habitual, and beginners may go home with a bruise or a scrape. As a diverse, growing community, they’re eagerly introducing more people to the sport. “Bike Polo really evens the playing field for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re a guy or a girl, or athletic or overweight. As long as you put in the practice time, you can become really good at it,” says Alex Gray, 27, a professional drone racer who began playing three months ago. “It’s also about the community. Of course it’s fun to compete, but the

other half is getting to hang out with a lot of nice folks.” Memphis Hardcourt Bike Polo encourages everyone to come out, whether you want to play or just watch. They have spare bikes and mallets for those new to the game. Zack Turner, 25, who’s been playing off and on for a couple years says, “It’s one of the few sports where beginners directly interact with more advanced players. Everyone still treats you like an equal. I can’t come out a lot, but they’re still encouraging. And even if you’re not very good yet, they want to see you out there getting better and having fun.” People who are already bike enthusiasts often gravitate toward the sport. “Since I started playing a couple years ago, I’ve gained a lot more confidence on my bike, which

has spilled over into other areas of my life,” says Funlola Coker, 27, a sculpture artist. Hardcourt Bike Polo is less about athletic endurance and more about expert handling of your bicycle. Landon Blankenship, a produce manager at Curb Market, says, “It’s one of the more relaxed and less expensive ways to compete on a bike.” The night ends long after the sun has gone down. It’s 10 p.m. and people have begun heading home to their families and getting ready for work the next day. The makeshift barriers of the court disappear for the night, transforming it back into the regular parking lot it pretends to be for the rest of the week. All that’s left of the evening’s magic are the lightening bugs that dance across the court.

meets every Wednesday and Sunday at 7:30 p.m at 769 S. Cooper Street. Come by to watch or to play—beginners are welcome and encouraged to participate. Spare equipment is available for use. For more information, contact Facebook.com/memphisbikepolo.

COACH’S CORNER

RUNNING IN PLACE While most of the US is busy enjoying a summer of fair weather runs, those of us here in the South are busy seeking comfort in the closest air conditioned room. I’m not sure how many of you have noticed, but summer is officially here and it’s a bit warm out. Scratch that, it’s downright HOT. For some runners, early mornings and proper hydration allow for a season of uninterrupted training, while for others, summer simply means surviving until fall. The treadmill provides an alternative to those summer days when getting outside for a run just isn’t an option. While the treadmill is not always viewed as the “knight in shining armor” of a distressed damsel looking for a run, it is an effective means to getting in the miles. Following are a few quick tips to help make the most of the time spent running in place. Have a clear plan in place before hitting the treadmill for a run. There are a number of reasons for this including time management, mental clarity, and training intentionality. Whether a recovery run or a goal specific interval session, treating the run as such will ensure a successful workout.

1

The treadmill is the perfect opportunity to be more conscious of running form and to make improvements if necessary. Keys to keep in mind include keeping your head up and eyes focused on an imaginary horizon, executing proper arm swing, and maintaining appropriate foot cadence.

2

It is key to replicate the changes in terrain and pace that are experienced when running outdoors. Varying both pace and incline on the treadmill will reduce stress on the body and help to occupy the mind.

3

Due to the lack of air circulation, proper hydration and fans are vital to combat dehydration and overheating. Do not ignore the potential to be at risk for heat related issues simply because you are indoors.

4

Keep in mind that the treadmill is simply another tool available to help you meet your training goals. Use it wisely and with a clear plan in order to fully realize its potential benefits. There is no substitute for getting out the door and enjoying the wind in your hair. It’s just that when the wind in Memphis feels more like a hot hair dryer, getting inside might not be so terrible.

STAYING FIT THROUGH RECOVERY How one father made it through renal cell cancer By Jennifer Brezina. Photos by Edward Kolton.

As a geriatric nurse, Barry Rossell, 51, routinely takes care of patients at a local retirement community. He was not prepared to become a patient himself, however, when his doctor diagnosed him with renal cell carcinoma. Three years ago, Rossell, 51, first developed a stomach ache, but he initially chalked it up to gastrointestinal issues. When the pain kept lingering, tests and scans revealed something extremely rare for his age—malignant tumors on both kidneys. Rossell says he felt devastated. “It was so baffling to me,” he says. “I have never been a smoker or a drinker. I watch what I eat, I exercise, and there has never been a history of cancer in my family. I even went through genetic testing and found that I carry no trait for anything like this.” Rossell broke the news to his four children who rallied behind him. He decided to keep a calm mind and focus on beating cancer. “I became determined to try and do something with myself, since I knew it would all come to an end if I didn’t get some kind of treatment. I also decided that all I can do is continue on: continue to be a nurse, continue to do the things in life that I enjoy, continue to be a father. I don’t dwell on my situation or my condition. I just hope for the best, and that’s where I turn my focus— on beating this cancer and doing what I can do.” In 2014, Rossell’s urologist, Dr. William “Rusty” Shappley III, performed a robotic partial nephrectomy, a surgery that removed part of his left kidney.

20

According to Shappley, renal cell carcinoma is the seventh most common adult malignancy in men and ninth in women. It accounts for two to three percent of adult cancers and typically presents in ages 60 through 80. It has a higher rate of presentation in patients who smoke, have a high BMI, and have poor blood pressure control.

“Fitness is important; it keeps me well grounded and helps me maintain a positive mental attitude.” Shappley says, “Barry has done exceedingly well from his procedure, which I believe is a testament to his general physical fitness and overall excellent health. Unfortunately, some patients without risk factors still develop cancers, and Barry is a man in excellent physical health who still had a rare presentation. His situation is a humbling and psychologically disconcerting reminder that there will always remain aspects of our existence beyond our control.” After his surgery, Rossell was back at work in less than one month. Two weeks after that, he was cleared to resume working out at the gym, something he has done since playing football in high school. He started out slowly but soon built up his weightlifting and cardio.

Barry says, “Fitness is important; it keeps me well grounded and helps me maintain a positive mental attitude. I lift light since I’m in my 50s and I try not to stress my joints. I enjoy working out with my youngest son and fit in at least four nights a week.” During his workouts, he says he tries to hit every muscle. He works on upper body strength two to three times per week and targets lower body muscles two times per week. This time of year, he enjoys running outside and gets in two to three miles each day. When the weather turns rainy, he hops on the treadmill. For now, Barry’s cancer remains stable, although there’s still a tumor within his right kidney. He is currently planning a cryoablation

procedure, which uses extreme cold to destroy the tumor. He says, “All in all, I thank God for how He has dealt with me and allowed me to keep a calm mind and easy approach. I have lived a decent life and learned the value of hard work, and I accept life and its challenges.” “Everybody’s story is going to be different. For me, whatever it is you’ve got to deal with, you focus on the now, and you try to take each day at a time. Don’t sit around and waste those days worrying about what’s going on. Some things you can’t change. I take one day at a time and embrace it.”

TEEN OF CROSSFIT: TAYLOR BABB By Christin Yates. Photos by Edward Kolton.

When most students are looking forward to a summer spent by the pool hanging out with their friends, you’ll find 15-year-old Taylor Babb training to compete in this summer’s CrossFit Games—a major accomplishment after placing 3rd worldwide in the teen division of this year’s CrossFit Open. Taylor began sports at a young age, starting with soccer and martial arts at age four. Supported by her family that encouraged her interest in running, she began competing in triathlons. She won races in multiple states, and later 2nd place at the Iron Kids National Championships in 2011 and 2012. However, at age 12, a meniscus tear and surgery forced Taylor to the sidelines. While recuperating, the teen reevaluated her future in athletics. During her recovery, Taylor and her father, Ty Babb, discovered CrossFit. Shortly after in 2013, Ty opened his own gym, A-Town Crossfit in

22

Arlington, where Taylor now trains. In just two years, she placed 5th in her division at the CrossFit Games and came in 3rd in weightlifting at the National Youth Championships. This year she performed even better at the CrossFit Open, which qualifies her to compete again this summer. “The CrossFit Games will be a great challenge and I’m eager to see the progress I have made since last year,” says Taylor.

making it challenging to find clothes that fit her muscular body. She and her mother are launching their own line of athletic clothing for teens and adults. “With A2G Apparel, we hope to help those with unconventional body types and encourage the community to live a healthy lifestyle,” says her mother, Kelly Nguyen Babb. Their functional clothing line will launch this summer on Kickstarter.

She maintains a 6-day training schedule: CrossFit five days per week, Olympic weightlifting three days per week, and running three days per week. Somewhere between this and school, she manages to fit in homework. “I set small goals for myself and train with those in mind. Pacing myself helps me see the bigger goals ahead,” she says.

Taylor’s family has been unconditionally supportive in helping her fulfill her dreams. “We’re extremely proud of Taylor and her mental toughness. Her ability to overcome and continue to pursue her goals is inspiring for us as her parents,” says her mother, Kelly.

As Taylor has trained and competed over the last few years, her body composition has changed,

WHAT ONE INCREDIBLE TEEN OVERCAME TO BECOME A JUNIOR OLYMPIAN

By Christin Yates Photo by Philip Murphy

Few high school students have gone as far or as high as Ryan Howard. The 6-foot self-taught high jumper fought his way to the AAU Junior Olympics in 2015, overcoming a broken back and pelvis, and a serious heart condition. As a junior in high school, he was one of the youngest competitors, vying mostly against college freshmen, and placed 13th nationally in the high jump event. Now this rising star is training to qualify for the 2016 games with an eye on the 2018 Olympic games in Tokyo. Ryan began his jumping career as a 7th grader a Munford Middle School. The track coach spotted him playing “Jump the Creek” during recess and encouraged him to try out for the track team. He was a natural at the long jump and expanded into the high jump when he got to high school. But without anyone to coach him, he turned to Youtube to improve his technique. He was sidelined during a track meet in 9th grade from an accident that fractured his back and pelvis. However, during that track meet, he set a long jump and high jump score that no one could match during the rest of his tenure. Throughout his recovery and over the next two years he was ranked #1 in the state.

After his success at the 2016 AAU Junior Olympics, Munford’s Mayor, Dwayne Cole, honored Ryan with a Mayoral Proclamation for his achievements and declared September 19th as Ryan “Feeling Froggy” Howard Day. Ryan and his family hope to encourage others to get outside and walk, move around, or jump to help fight obesity. Ryan’s achievements also caught the attention of two local Olympians, Rochelle Stevens and Hollis Conway. Conway will be mentoring Ryan in the high jump as he begins training for the 2018 Tokyo Olympics.

At the end of a very successful high school career, Ryan has received offers from notable schools, such as University of Alabama. The recent graduate also just wrapped up filming the new series, Million Dollar Quartet, as a stand-in for Chad Michael Murray. For now, this rising star will continue training for the 2016 AAU Junior Olympics and has a busy summer ahead of him. To help support Ryan Howard’s journey to the 2016 AAU Junior Olympics and the 2018 Olympics, visit www.gofundme.com/FeelingFroggy or to purchase one of his signature “Feeling Froggy” T-shirts ($12) or hoodies ($25), email FeelingfroggyHoward@gmail.com.

In Ryan’s sophomore year he continued to excel at his sport, but a heart issue he had since birth began to hold him back. At age 13 Ryan was diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation, a quivering or irregular heartbeat that can lead to other health conditions. This meant that a small amount of exertion would leave him with an alarmingly high heart rate. “It was tough at times. I couldn’t do most things, especially cardio. I would run for only a couple of minutes and then my heart would be beating out of my chest.” In 11th grade he opted to have heart surgery to correct the issue and was pulled out of high school to be homeschooled during the procedure and recovery period. Doctors performed ablations on six areas of his heart and were able to fix the problem. Ryan was cleared for exercise after one month, but now being homeschooled, he had no access to equipment and had to be his own trainer. Without practice or a coach, qualified in the long jump, triple jump, and high jump for the AAU Junior Olympics in just three track meets. Most students compete as part of a team, but since Ryan was on his own, he made up his own team name, Feeling Froggy, and from there his brand was born. The phrase originated from his parents who would always ask him before a meet if he was “feeling froggy” since he only competes in jumping events.

Runner on the Rise: Claire Webb By Robin Beaudoin

Already nearly 90 races under her belt, this little one is running out of places to hang her medals. Claire Webb, 8-year-old student at Crosswind Elementary, has broken records in three states, held three Alabama state records, and is one of the youngest children to ever complete in half marathons in both Alabama and Mississippi. It all started with her father taking his twin daughters, Claire and her sister Reese, out for runs. “My dad was the double stroller guy for a couple of years and sometimes he would let me push and run. I got used to it and it was really fun!” By age four, Claire was setting records for the 2-mile and 5k. She’s also held records in the Memphis Runners Track Club for the 4-mile and 10k in her age group. Her father says that she doesn’t follow a rigid training schedule. “We have fun doing it and we try to stay in shape for the big races, but her mother and I have never pushed her. If she wants to do a race, it’s her decision.” Claire has also competed in a kids’ triathlon and an obstacle race. She enjoys trail races and obstacle races the most. “They’re really fun because it’s more than just a regular race.” Although Claire loves to win, her parents encourage to keep a healthy perspective: It’s about having fun and being healthy. “Even if I don’t win, my Dad is proud of me,” she says. “And every time we go to a race, it’s an ice cream day.” Besides running, Claire is a normal kid who loves Harry Potter and likes to have fun. This summer she’s hanging out by the pool with her friends, attending summer camp, and taking a trip out to the beach.

“Even if I don’t win, my Dad is proud of me. And every time we go to a race, it’s ice cream day.”

COVER PROFILE

Summer Beach Body

By Amy Goode. Photo by Sarah McAlexander.

Monica Braun, 29 At 5-foot-10-inches and 150-pounds, this sunbathed beauty is sweating on and off the sand to stay in peak form for the summer. Monica Braun is a part of 901 Volleyball, which hosts sand volleyball tournaments throughout the summer. You can find her digging and diving on the court at least three times a week.

OCCUPATION: Executive Assistant at the Workforce Investment Network HOMETOWN: Santa Ana, California. But I’ve called Memphis my home for 5 years. FUR FAMILY: Two rescues—Sally the Chihuahua and Winnie the Pit. WHY VOLLEYBALL? I competed in indoor volleyball in high school and college at Lambuth University in Jackson, Tenn. When I moved to Memphis, I was looking for a way to add fun cardio into my routine and got connected with the local sand volleyball family. From there I was hooked! WHAT MAKES IT A WORKOUT? People do not realize this, but volleyball really works all your muscles. After some hard playing, you find that your legs, arms, back, and even your ribs and abs are sore. The constant movement creates amazing cardio, as well as muscle and body shaping. INDOOR VS OUTDOOR: Playing two-on-two volleyball guarantees a good cardio work out, while allowing me to work on individual skills— something more difficult to accomplish with traditional six-on-six volleyball. I jokingly say that I have retired from indoor because you have to adjust to the larger court size, different rules, and lighter volleyball. Yet, I find myself playing in a six-on-six indoor league in Millington every winter to get through the cold months. PREGAME RITUAL: I like to visualize my play while I throw a volleyball against the net to warm up my shoulder.

28

WORST TEAMMATE MOMENT: My partner decided to have a few adult beverages before a match in a tournament and fell repeatedly on the court.

WHAT WORKOUTS DO YOU DO TO STAY TWO-PIECE READY? When I am not playing volleyball, I work out in my living room with Kayla Itsines’s Bikini Body Workout plan. It’s a combination of cardio and bodyweight circuit training that I do while I watch TV.

TIPS TO OTHER VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS: The advice I share with newcomers is to imagine a giant circle in the middle of the court. As long as you keep the ball in the circle, you can control the play better, and make it easier on your partner.

TYPICAL DIET: I mainly eat plant based food with no meat and rarely any dairy. This means a lot of beans, rice, tofu, nuts, and vegetables. I love to eat and feel satisfied, so cutting meat and dairy from my diet allows me to get full from eating more vegetables, feeling lighter and more

energetic throughout the day. It has also helped my skin tremendously. HOW DO YOU STAY CONFIDENT IN A BIKINI? I realize and acknowledge that even the fittest have a bit of jiggle. So, I remember that I do the best that I can for my body and embrace any jiggle and imperfections that come with being a real, non-photoshopped human being. FAVORITE BIKINI BRANDS: Athleta and Roxy because they design fashionable suits that you can wear while being active or just lounging around by the pool.

I wake up every morning at 4 a.m. and tell myself “I Can Do This.” I am reclaiming my healthy lifestyle and reaching my goals. I am a member of Black Girls Run in Memphis. The mission of BGR is to encourage all women to make fitness and healthy living a priority. I also participate in group fitness classes at The St. Jude Living Well Center. My favorite classes at St. Jude are Step Aerobics, Kickboxing With a Twist, and Head to Toe Circuit Training.

“My goal is to maintain good health and make sure my son understands what it takes to live a healthy lifestyle.” RECENT WW EVENTS: 2015 St. Jude Marathon 5k and I’m signed up for the 2016 St. Jude Marathon. FAVORITE FITNESS ACCOMPLISHMENT: When I first started running long distances, I really hated it. I never understood how people could run so far without getting tired. Running one minute at a time was very hard for me, but after joining BGR, I learned that running in intervals and having running buddies helped increased my speed. I remember feeling so accomplished when I was able to run two-five minute intervals without stopping. I am now able to run a little over a mile, while maintaining a 10-minute mile pace. MOTIVATION: My 7 year old son is my motivation to keep on pushing. When I’m at home working out, he always asks, “Mom can I work out with you?” He is very active and loves playing sports and running. My goal is to maintain good health and make sure he understands what it takes to live a healthy lifestyle. I’m the only mom he will ever have and I plan to continue this fitness journey so that I will be around to see him grow up and have kids of his own. IN TRAINING FOR: BGR Global Takeover/The SHE Power Virtual 10k INSPIRATION: Before I started my fitness journey I weighed in at over 200 pounds. I knew this wasn’t a healthy weight for me, but I was comfortable and content with my size. Someone very close to me had to undergo an open-heart surgery at the age of 32 due to high blood pressure. That was a wakeup call for me to get serious about my health and weight loss goals. I have lost over 40 pounds since I started this journey. Consistency is the key! POWER SONG: Mary Mary – Go Get It BEST EATS: Benihana; I love Hibachi. I always order their Rocky’s Choice with a Mai Tai. BUCKET LIST: Travel to Canada to run the Niagara Falls Half Marathon. FIT RECIPE

10 Minute Balsamic Salmon with Tomato Avocado Salad by Andrea LeTard

When cooking at home, most people have two requirements: make it quick and make it healthy. With tomato season just around the corner, quick and healthy is easy peasy. A ripe, farm fresh tomato is all you need as the base for a great meal. In just 10 minutes, you can put together this beautiful dinner that is as simple as it is healthy. Cooking the salmon over a high heat creates a delicious crust more often seen in restaurants style dinners. Once you cook it this way, it’s almost guaranteed you’ll never cook it another way again. The balsamic reduction adds a sweet acidity that brings together the brightness of the salad and the richness of the salmon. This recipe reminds us that using the freshest ingredients means less effort in the kitchen.

Ingredients:

2 servings

q 1 /2 cup good quality balsamic vinegar q K osher salt q G ood quality extra virgin olive oil q 2 fresh center cut salmon filets—skin removed q 1 0 oz grape tomatoes q 1 avocado

Directions: 1. I n a small saucepan, heat 1/4 cup of the balsamic vinegar with a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil and reduce and allow to simmer until meal is ready to plate. 2. H eat oven to 425F. Add a splash of olive oil to an ovenproof pan and put on the highest heat setting on the stovetop. Let heat until the oil is smoking. 3. While pan is heating, prepare the salmon by rubbing each filet with 1 Tbsp of olive oil. Season them with 1/2 tsp of salt and 1/4 tsp of pepper. 4. Once oil is smoking, place salmon in the pan skin side up and don’t touch or move them for 2 full minutes. This will create a delicious crust. Flip salmon and let cook for 1 minute on the other side. Remove the pan from the heat and place in oven for 4 minutes, allowing the salmon to continue cooking. 5. K eeping an eye on the salmon while it’s cooking, slice the tomatoes in half and cube the avocado. Place them in a large bowl and stir in 2 Tbsp of the olive oil, the rest of the balsamic vinegar, 1.5 tsp of kosher salt, and 1/2 tsp of pepper. 6. S erve salmon over a bed of the salad with a heavy drizzle of balsamic syrup.
