FIT TRIP

THE FASTEST WAY TO REHYDRATE During the sweating hot summer, dehydration can be more of an issue than we realize. When we sweat, we not only lose water, but salts and sugars that keep us energized. Even simple hangovers can leave us painfully thirsty.

Barbara Tatge describes her 6-day, 420-mile ride and over 35,000 feet of climbing through the Rockies as epic!

Toni Zoblotsky (right, in red) with Barbara Honiberg in Del Mar, California

practices tree pose at Inhale Yoga & Fitness. Toni started practicing yoga in 2015 and says it changed her life.

Been on a Fit Trip? Send your photo and a brief caption to hailey@memphishealthandfitness.com and you maybe in the next issue of H+F!

IV hydration is the easiest and fastest way to overcome dehydration. One 30 minute IV drip is equivalent to drinking two gallons of water. Many parts of the country have been introduced to the advantages of IV hydration including decreased fatigue, decreased pain, improved muscle recovery, improved skin complexion, and an overall feeling of health and wellbeing. It’s also proven to beneficial for patients with chronic conditions such as Lyme Disease, heavy metal toxicity, Fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome. A standard IV drip typically has saline (salt), sugar, electrolytes, and vitamins. Custom formulated IV drips are available such as Pure Hydration, Vitamin Infusion, Hangover Cure, Glutathione Infusion, and Myers’ Cocktail. The main risks of IV Hydration are the same as any normal injection, such as a vaccination: infection at the entry site and bruising. A normal IV Hydration session takes between 20 minutes and an hour. Enjoy TV, WIFI, and refreshments while you wait to feel rejuvenated and energized. Cyclists to Pedal for St. Jude kids on Oct. 21 in Tom Lee Park Calling all cyclists who are willing to pedal for a cause! The St. Jude Ride on Friday, Oct. 21 through Saturday, Oct. 22, welcomes riders from Memphis and the surrounding metropolitan area to participate in its 24-hour relay for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®.

hope participants take great pride in knowing they are helping an organization that is leading the way the world understands, treats, and defeats childhood cancer, and that we won’t stop working until no child dies from cancer.”

A new offering at this year’s event is a six-hour ride, targeting families and groups with people of varying ages and experience levels. Funds raised help ensure families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing, or food because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.

Among the cyclists will be hospital staff and patient families, including returning patient Adam Cruthirds. “The St. Jude Ride gives everyone an opportunity to challenge themselves. While the fight to bike for 24-hours straight isn’t the same as the fight that the kids of St. Jude go through, it gives them a taste of what it’s like,” said Cruthirds.

“Endurance events like this one show our patient families that they have a strong community of supporters behind them,” said Richard Shadyac Jr., President and CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “We

as individuals or $7,500 as a team will receive additional perks, such as upgraded tailgating tent space. For more information, visit stjude.org/stjuderide.

COACH’S CORNER

WHEN RUNNING HEATS UP Not all of us can take our run indoors to escape Memphis’s heat. And some of us consider the “dreadmill” less desirable than a root canal. As uncomfortable as it is to run outside, we can still run through the summer and arrive at fall unscathed. Following are several tips to help you make it through those days when you feel like you’re breathing through a shirt and running into a hairdryer.

WEAR LIGHTWEIGHT, TECHNICAL APPAREL.

AVOID THE HEAT WHEN POSSIBLE.

• Technical fabrics are lightweight, breathable, manage moisture, and often contain UV protection—perfect for summer runs.

• R unning early in the morning or later in the evening is the most practical way to avoid the day’s highest temperature.

• Do not forget to protect the skin that is most exposed. Wear a shirt that covers your shoulders and upper arms.

• I f you’re forced to run in the heat of the day, look for shade along the run or strategically plan shaded routes.

• Wearing sunglasses will reduce tension in the face, neck, and shoulders, resulting in a more relaxed run.

ADJUST YOUR PACE.

HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE! • Drink when thirsty—all day, every day.

• Y ou should expect to run a minute per mile slower (maybe more) during the summer months in Memphis.

• Drink before you run and carry fluid with you. Drink 4-6 ounces every 15 minutes.

ADJUST YOUR DISTANCE.

• Water is great for workouts of 60 minutes or less. For longer efforts, an electrolyte drink is beneficial.

• A 15-20% decrease in the distance of a run is not worth stressing over if the alternative is exhaustion that ruins the remainder of the week’s runs.

• Drink 16-20 ounces of fluids while you cool down.

14

• S tart your runs slowly and expect to run slower than you would in normal conditions.

• D o not be afraid to turn that 6 mile run into a 4-5 mile run, or that 14 mile run into a 12 mile effort. Trust me, you’re still doing the work.

Do you have questions about getting started or finding a plan to work for you? Stop in and talk to anyone on our staff. We’ll be happy to help!

ALLOW TIME FOR THE BODY TO ACCLIMATIZE TO THE HEAT. • The onset of the summer’s heat requires a period of time for the body to simply adjust to the dramatic changes taking place, both intrinsically and extrinsically. • 1 0-14 days is suffice for most athletes’ bodies to become more comfortable in the heat. • Heed the pace/distance points made earlier, especially during this phase.

BE SMART! • Know the warning signs of heat-related illnesses. • Should you feel dizzy, nauseous, over-heated, or suddenly have chills, STOP and WALK. • Get out of the sun and get fluids back into your system. • Your health is not worth the effort of one, single run.

COVER PROFILE

Felicia Bolton

Since hanging up her sash, this former Miss Texas has swapped her swimsuit for boxing gloves. The 26-year-old news anchor has been winning pageants since 2008 and she’s no stranger to the gym. “For years, especially when training for Miss Texas, I would spend hours in a traditional 24 hour gym. I liked it—at one point I even loved it, but now I’m honestly burnt out! I knew I wanted to try something new. So, I found boxing and fitness kickboxing.” Felicia began training with mixed martial arts fighter and Memphis police officer, Brian Hall. You can find them at Memphis Fitness Kickboxing in Midtown, outdoor distance running in areas of Memphis, the Police Boxing Gym, and Memphis Judo & Jiu Jitsu in Bartlett.

Why is being fit important to you? For me, fitness is not just about the outer appearance; Fitness is about improving mental health and a method to prolong my life. I have noticed that I am more empowered, focused, and happier when I work out.

What or Who inspires you to be fit? While I was in Costa Rica, my mother was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and given only three months to live. She did not tell me while I was abroad, but I knew there was something wrong. I came back home, she was at least 60 pounds lighter and could barely walk. My mother, being the strong, beautiful woman that she was, decided to fight back! The entire family started a lifestyle change: mom, dad, aunts, uncles—everyone. We changed how we ate everyday by looking for fresh fruits and vegetables. We bought natural supplements, which I still take today, and sought the help of a homeopathic doctor, as well as the traditional doctor. Those “three months” became two years. She was a warrior. She never gave up. She never took “no” for an answer. She inspires my dreams, my fitness, and my life.

Favorite Workout: I love heading to the boxing gym. When I walk into a ring or a room full of battle ropes and tires, I get excited! I’m ready to fight. I’m ready to dive in and gear up for the challenge ahead of me.

16

COVER PROFILE

Sample Workout: Here is a thigh workout that I do on my own when I’m not training with Brian Hall: Repeat 2 times

• REGULAR SQUATS: 25 Reps • FEET TOGETHER SQUATS: 25 • WIDE SQUATS: 25 Reps • LUNGES: 25 Reps with 45lb bar • JUMPING SQUATS: 50 Reps

What is your approach to nutrition? Overall, I believe in clean eating—meaning no processed food, no junk food, and no fast food. Find the diet that works best for you. My workout partner, WMC meteorologist Brittney Bryant, and I are on different diets because we have different goals and palates. When I want to step it up, I cut out starches and meat and become a pescatarian.

Beauty product must-haves: MAC studio sculpt foundation! Its SPF formula works on the face and body. It also comes in a large color spectrum, so you can change it for your summer skin or winter tone. I Love MAC!

When I am not working out I love to... Dance! I have been salsa dancing and bachata dancing since 2011. I fell in love with those styles while I was living in San Jose, Costa Rica. My host mother and host sister showed me my first salsa steps while I was in the kitchen one night. Five years later, I’m still spinning, turning, and styling. The passion and flavor of salsa invigorates me. It’s a workout in itself. Latin dance is a true passion of mine. Interview by Laurenne Hom. Photos by Philip Murphy.

FIT PROFILE

John Irvine This 27-year-old’s fitness family has grow exponentially, since opening Iron Tribe East Memphis and Germantown with his business partners two years ago. Working with clients through total body transformations and seeing their success is the fire that keeps him coming to work everyday. With an 18-month-old daughter and another on the way, he finds even more reason to keep up on fitness. “I feel that I have energy to be a better husband, father, and friend and can be more active in my workplace and community.”

Christian Heyser For this beauty, it’s all about the legs. As the 2015 Pikes Peak International Boxing Tournament 132lbs Champion, she can definitely say that legs contribute to a powerful punch. She’s gained that strength through dedicated hours at the gym. How does this 24-year-old maintain her drive? “At least once a month try a new activity. It is important to stay motivated and inspired. My greatest sources of motivation and inspiration have stemmed from meeting new people while trying new activities.” 18

FIT PROFILE

Adina Wiseman Whether it’s TRX, Pure Power, Turbo Kick, running, cycling, or bootcamp, this 43-year-old mother of two and owner of LiveFIT Bootcamp & Studios knows how to stay fit. But her real secret lies in clean eating. With a large collection of healthy recipes, she devotes her Sundays to preparing nutritious meals for the week ahead. “Meal prepping increases your odds of staying on track immensely! There is no magic pill that will offer lasting results. Plan and prep for your week to be successful. And keep it simple!”

Leonard Pegues According to this 51-year-old fitness trainer, model, and minister, exercise is more than just for looks. He and his company, LP Fitness, believe that the mind, body, and spirit are one. “All need to be addressed in order to achieve long lasting success. Exercise keeps my mind sharp and my spirit strong.” Besides helping clients lose weight and regain their strength, he volunteers at Shelby County School’s Very Special Arts Fest to encourage children who are physically and mentally disabled. “I want to be part of the solution to helping our city, our citizens, really live healthfully.” 20

HOW TO LEVERAGE THE PROTEIN PUNCH No matter how much we think we know about protein, there are still misperceptions and flat out myths that could have you losing protein’s punch of energy. By Leslie Carr

TOP PROTEIN MYTHS* MYTH #1 PROTEIN IS ONLY IN MEAT

MYTH #2 PROTEIN IS GOOD; CARBS ARE BAD.

MYTH #3 HIGH-PROTEIN DIETS HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT.

TRUTH:

TRUTH:

TRUTH:

Vegetables, whole grains, and legumes are excellent sources of protein without the health risks of meat and other animal products.

Both protein and carbohydrates are part of a nutritionally balanced diet. Carbohydrates are the body’s main energy source and should take up the majority of your plate. Grains, fruits, vegetables, and beans are considered carbohydrates. They are also excellent sources of protein, fiber, and other essential nutrients.

Calories are calories, whether they’re from carbs or protein. Excess protein calories will not magically turn into muscle. To lose weight in a healthy way, it is important to have a balanced diet focusing on all of the necessary nutrients.

*Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

THE PLUS OF PAIRING The origin of the word “protein” comes from the Greek word “protos,” which means “first.” This underscores protein’s significance to the human body. Protein is found in every cell of your body and acts as the building block for bone, skin, muscle, cartilage, and blood. Not only is it central to physical growth and strength development, research suggests that protein also helps with satiety, or your fullness factor. Why is satiety—or satisfaction—so important? Have you ever caught yourself running out the door for work with a piece of toast in hand only to find that an hour later you are searching your desk for a mid-morning snack? The missing component to that breakfast is the protein your body so desperately needs to operate at full potential. By adding a couple of scrambled eggs with cheese or a scoop of peanut butter to that toast, your body will have a much greater chance of avoiding those mid-morning stomach growls and the energy dip that often accompanies them. Paying attention to how you pair proteins with other macronutrients (namely carbs and fats) can make a big difference in satiety.

HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH? The amount of protein you need depends on your age, sex, how much you weigh, and how active you are—among other things. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein for the average adult is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. To find out your average individual need, perform the following calculation: Body weight (in pounds) x 0.36 = recommended protein intake (in grams).

FIT RECIPE

Roasted Figs with Goat Cheese and Pistachios

By Margaret Molteni

It’s seems like summer comes and goes right before our eyes. We wait all year for this perfect season and then before we know it, it’s coming to an end. The good news is that August is one of the only months that we can find figs in select grocery stores. Just like the precious months of summer, we have to take advantage of the foods that are only around for a short time while we have the chance. Figs make attractive starters and delicious desserts. Pair them with artisan cheese and nuts or accentuated with honey and add to ice cream desserts.

INGREDIENTS:

INSTRUCTIONS:

q 8 figs

1. Preheat oven to 375F.

q 1 tsp coconut sugar

2. Wash the figs, cut off the stems, and slice each into 4-5 thin pieces.

q 1 -2 Tbsp goat cheese (crumbled)

3. Spread the figs on a cookie sheet and sprinkle evenly with coconut sugar. Bake for 35 minutes.

q 1 /4 cup pistachios (shelled)

4. While figs are baking, give the shelled pistachios a rough chop and set aside.

q 1 Tbsp honey

5. A llow the figs to cool for 5-10 minutes. Toss them with the goat cheese and pistachios. Drizzle with honey.

q ( Optional) vanilla bean ice cream

6. Optional: add a scoop or two of vanilla bean ice cream.

FIT RECIPE

Summer Lavender Cocktails by Andrea LeTard

Summer should be savored until the first leaf drops, and lavender is the perfect way to keep it going. The start of August marks the official lavender harvest season. In Provence, France the endless stretch of beautiful lavender fields starts to wane, so the fresh herb is readily available for cooking, baking, and of course—cocktails. Here in Memphis, lavender grows easily, and if you’re going to plant any herb, this should be it! While it’s the perfect herb for baking and cooking, lavender’s subtle flavor makes a great addition to cocktails. This light, low-sugar lavender honey simple syrup can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge. It’s great in coffee, tea, or in a pinch when friends come over and want a cold beverage. These fruity, fresh cocktail and mocktail recipes are great for grown ups and safe for the whole family. Just close your eyes, sip, and picture yourself in the south of France.

Lavender Honey Simple Syrup INGREDIENTS: q 1 cup honey

q 2 cups water

q 4 fresh springs of lavender

INSTRUCTIONS: In a medium saucepan, bring the honey, water, and lavender to a boil. Take off the heat, letting the liquid steep and cool for at least 15 minutes. Take the lavender out before the liquid drastically changes color. Bottle and store in the refrigerator.
