Artist Talk:
How shall I put it! I am not such an ambitious one. I started to notice this. I saw how others created. I visited to the exhibitions and read some related books. Internet was not so easily accessible in that era. So I decided to study abroad at LaSalle Art College. Itâs only for one reason, to know more. Itâs not like I planned to become an artist after school, nor would I go through some training towards becoming an artist. I am very keen to know many things. I expected I would have sufficient knowledge if I went to somewhere resourceful. I came to know many things that I wanted learn. I got the aesthetic experience.
Doing whatever you like without any discipline is not art. I came to know that firmly since first semester. After any creation, I asked my instructors or fellow students to act as critics for it. I think criticism plays very important for an artist. It can go off the route if there is no criticism.
This exhibition was named âEnigmatic Breakfast.â With dilemma or uncertain decisions, things that inspired me include different things. Stories, films, music, sometimes lyrics rather than melody, and especially poems. I was quite a selfish person by then. So, I look back to myself my creations were mostly about me. Perhaps it also accounted to the experiences that I went through. When I wanted to oppose something, I tried to know well about that thing first and reach some point. Thatâs why I paid attention to education and wanted to learn. The reason was to oppose. Itâs a bit dictatorial. There was ego within it. Therefore, you might think âwhatâs he demonstrating and narrating? Why are there so many boundaries?â If possible, I want to destruct preoccupation and strong beliefs. I would like to deconstruct. For example, we always knew in life that a kettle was just for the sake to put hot water to drink. But what if I created the kettle to be able to use as a phone? Itâs like changing the function of a readymade object. Itâs something based on the ideology of Dadaism.

I lost myself in drawing. Iâve lost what I want to be or what I want to draw while drawing. Since childhood I used to do paper craft like paper toys, paper tower building with my dad. So, paper always attracts me. If I saw colors and paper, I cannot go without buying. I canât stand without collecting. Around 2011-2012, I started studying how to create with painting and paper together.
When I started it, I began testing with some paper craft techniques to create the 3D backgrounds of a painting. During the test, itâs hard to maintain them. They are easily damaged as they are made of glue and paper. So, I thought how I can do without using glue, to just do with paper. I first do sketching on paper. Then, cut with the blade mostly from the back as I donât want the sketch lines appeared. So, itâs reversed. Only after cutting the paper, I turned the side.
I think what to cut out and what not to during the process. Both in a positive way and negative way. The theme is mainly on myself and people around me. One series is called âStory Telling.â The works are mostly about my countryâs social and economic issues. If itâs not directly related, itâs about something indirect - like things which make me feel. It is some scenes like the babyâs crying with the background of the Kachin Manaw Monument. When I created this, there is a civil war happening in Kachin. I have strong feelings about children and elderly people. Thatâs why there are mostly elderly grandpas, grandmas and children in my works.
Most are about the things being hidden. In this series, my works were created with 3 layers. One subject in the first layer and another at the second layer and another in the third layer. I chose 3 colors. 3 Pictures in 3 layers. Only when all layers were combined, thereâs one story. But, some of the parts are still hidden in a paper cutting nature. In the real world too, itâs hard to know some parts of a story. What is really happening may be different. My conception is that I create works to share a message. I have no big expectations, like this work will support this and that. Just to create works which share a message.
