TENTACLES

TRUE LEGS

SPIRACLES The spiracles are external openings that allow respiration for the caterpillar. This is implemented by creating a hexagonal walkway that allows airflow & passage. The caterpillar itself is made up of mostly stomach. This is prevalent in the design with the open direct motion through the above pedestrian walkway.

The 6 legs of the caterpillar sparked the idea of using the hexagon as a dominant module throughout the design. The simple shape fits into most of the caterpillars functions and made it perfect to create a drive-thru station, as well as educationally inform the public of the systems of a monarch caterpillar before they visit the next-door nature center.

PRO-LEGS Insects have 6 legs. Prolegs are not to be confused with legs. They’re used as anchors that hold the caterpillar in place during movement of other body segments. In the design, I created the foundational support for entire system around the true legs

Administering the tentacles into the design acted as a secondary structural system for the overhead bridge. Employing the V-shaped tentacles as a simple form makes it straightforward for cars to pass in both directions by placing it in the median underneath the walkway.

THORAX

The 2nd section, after the head, is where the thorax is located. This section is connected to the true legs, which help the caterpillar inch along. The self-evident body movement plays a strong part in the design by creating a bridge across the Mall of Georgia Blvd towards the nature center, insinuating plays of this design into the next one.
