Art in the Library

by Ann May The John F. Moss Library at Texas A&M University-Texarkana is currently hosting an art exhibit featuring Robert Michael Guillory, Leah Jane Beall, and Gabriel Avila. These three artists created art together during their free time while tutoring at Texarkana College. One technique they enjoyed is pointillism-painting tiny points of color that blend together when seen from a distance. Their work in pointillism inspired the title of the exhibit, "A Point in Time." The title also reflects the expression of the artists through various moments-"points in time"- in their lives. Along with pointillism, other works of the artists are included in the exhibit.

Among Robert Guillory's pointillism pieces is a series of colorful animals done in ink on paper, with scientific names for each animal. He enjoys finding interesting titles for his pieces, such as "Loxodonta of the Ocean," a large black and white elephant face on a bright purple background, done in acrylic and ink. Inside the elephant's face are sea animals, flowers, and a ship anchored in the ocean. One of Robert's showcases includes designs of feathers painted in acrylic on wine bottles and on pieces of driftwood. Another showcase contains several pencil on paper and ink on paper intricate designs, some of which he started just with a line to see where it would lead. The exhibit also includes several of Robert's colorful photographs of landscapes and flowers.

Leah Beall is an English teacher who originally majored in art at Texarkana College.

She likes realism and enjoys depicting nature--flowers, animals, and landscapes-- in her work. Many of her paintings are in acrylic or watercolor, and she recently started working with digital photography. Long walks in the woods and traveling to other areas of the country give her the inspiration for her photos and paintings. Several pieces in the exhibit show Leah's interest in the 60s era. Two of the interesting pieces are "A Tribute to the Beatles" in acrylic and "A Drop of the 60s" in mixed media. One of her pointillism pieces depicts a peacock, and two striking pictures of a wolf and of a tiger are done in black and silver scratchboard.

Gabriel Avila first studied art with Jeannie Knod Edwards and Glen Knod, art teachers at Arkansas High School. His artwork consists mainly of acrylic paintings, although some of his pieces are done in watercolor, pastels, and ink.

Although some of his paintings are abstracts, his works usually depict nature.

Some of his pieces have Spanish titles, reflecting his heritage. His works in pointillism include a painting of a koi fish done in acrylic and one of a hummingbird done in colored ink. Gabriel's interest in nature is reflected in an acrylic painting titled "Broken Pine" and one in watercolor called "River Crossing." His contributions to the exhibit include three hand saws with acrylic paintings of fall leaves, an apple tree, and a peacock.

Everyone is invited to the library to enjoy this diverse collection of artwork which is on display through August 31, 2016.

Providing you with access to relevant data from over 18,000 sources, their focus is firmly based on professional, clear, quick and consistent results. Find data from market research, business, government, and more. You can export data in png, xls, and ppt formats, and you can choose how to display the data. Best of all, everything is cited in detail!

Texas A&M University-Texarkana supports culture, diversity and languages with our online resource Innovative learning begins with Mango Languages

Texas A&M University - Texarkana is excited to announce the availability of Mango Languages, a leading language and culture learning resource, available online from anywhere, 24/7. Mango Languages enriches lives with language and culture through self-guided courses that go beyond grammar and vocabulary, introducing language learners to a whole new world.

While you may be coming into the library for an important test or are simply browsing for some leisure reading, why not take a look at some of the assortment of literature from our very own professors? While this list is certainly not comprehensive, below is a small selection of a few of the written works by several of Texas A&M University - Texarkana’s faculty.

Ethical and Legal Issues in Counseling Children and Adolescents (BF636.67 .S27 2016) With the world growing more connected, the world of therapy and counseling continues to grow in multiple ways. This text, edited and written in part by Dr. Teri Sartor, Assistant Professor of Counseling Education, as well as Dr. William McHenry, seeks to examine the challenges and principles faced by child counseling today. Civic Education in the Twenty-First Century: A Multidimensional Inquiry (LC1091 .C52877 2015) A book primarily aimed at the importance of promoting informed citizens, the fourth chapter of which, “Models of Civic Education in America,” was written by Dr. Gary Bugh, Associate Professor of Political Science.

Principles of Modern Digital Design (TK7868 .L6 L3486 2007) If you’re interested in computer engineering or digital design theory, this text, written by Dr. Parag Lala, Professor of Electrical Engineering, might be what you’re looking for. We also own a Chinese translation!

A Counselor’s Guide to Neuroscience (QP360 .M3535 2014) This overview to neurobiology is co-authored

by Dr. Angela Sikorski, Associate Professor of Biology , as well as Dr. William McHenry, Dean of Graduate Studies and Research. Dr. Tommie Hughes, also an Associate Professor of Biology, also contributed to a chapter of the book.

The Spanish of Bucaramanga, Colombia (PC4876.R56 2008 and P40.45.B8 R56 2013) An examination of the colloquial Spanish of the urban community of Bucaramanga, Colombia by Dr. Luz Mary Rincon, Associate Professor of Spanish and Bilingual Education. The library owns the text in its original language as well as an English translation.

Electoral College Reform: Challenges and Possibilities (JK529 .E54 2010) Edited by Dr. Gary Bugh, this text seeks to inform readers of crucial elements of the Electoral College, elaborating on criticisms and analyzing the concerns voters feel toward the controversial system.

Ginger Mann says: Several of my favorite books

were written by historian David McCullough. He writes about people and events important in the history of America. His most recent work, The Wright Brothers (TL540.W7 M3825 2015 in the main collections in both the A&M and TC libraries) provides an account of the worldwide competition for men to fly that became reality in North Carolina in 1903 when Orville and Wilbur Wright actually “flew.” McCullough draws Technical Services Librarian/ from a variety of sources, including diaries, Assistant Library Director letters, notebooks, newspapers and official documents to create an account that is historically reliable and very readable. I had the sense of being an eyewitness to history, because the people and events were fully developed and described. As a result, I have a greater understanding of and appreciation for the Wright brothers and their incredible achievements.

Olivia Garcia says: My favorite book is The Histori-

an by Elizabeth Kostova. I first picked this book up in the DFW airport while waiting on my flight to Frankfurt, Germany which was where I would catch my first connecting flight to Tirana, Albania for some International Studies work I performed there at the International School’s Library. I figured it looked interesting enough and thick enough to entertain my brain throughout my trip. There would Electronic and Digital be a 10 hour layover in Rome and we were not allowed to venture out of the airport for that leg of Services Librarian our journey. This book contains so much of what I love with its historical references, travelling around Europe poking through old dusty libraries and of course, Vlad the Impaler! Who couldn’t love a book with all of that and vampires and not the cheesy kind? The descriptors in the book are pretty in depth to the point of almost feeling like you had been in those same places and are merely reading over a faint memory of them. If you couldn’t tell already, I love this book!

time favorites, a story for the young and old. I found it to be a magnificent and suspenseful fantasy adventure where both legend and tradition come together.

This tale is packed with many colorful characters, both noble and evil, who will lead you on an epic journey. If you haven’t read it, you’re missing out on a magical delight. (Available in the Juvenile collection at PR6039.O45 H63 1966)
