Dear Class of 2014; We both share something this year: Your graduation from AMSU and my impending retirement in 2014 as a US Army chaplain after 33 years. Thank you for the wonderful memories you have left us. You showed your remarkable character in many ways, but most especially, in your mature and dignified farewell to your sweet classmate, Zuleimi. I have no doubt that, both individually and collectively, you have a guardian angel watching over you.

Akilah’s return has been a blessing for the AMSU community and serves as a symbol of your resilience in a time of dynamic uncertainty in our nation. You have joined a sisterhood of remarkable women forged over 158 years at AMSU. Since you have shared your farewell photos with us, I will share my farewell photo in uniform with you. As we used to say in the 102nd Combat Engineers, “Essayons.”

Administration Dear Graduates: Have you ever heard the saying “A picture is worth a thousand words?” Of course you have! Who hasn’t?

It is a common saying, an age-old adage, believed to be derived from an even older Chinese proverb, Instagram is among one of various social networking sites that are visually driven, thriving on pictures and the words, feelings, thoughts, and emotions they evoke. Why? Because what pictures evoke wields considerable power over people, in particular, young, impressionable people. This power is acknowledged

by Instagram and its likeness, the app Shots of Me, which aims to capitalize on the recent popularity of the selfie. Such apps are widely criticized for promoting comparisons, provoking social envy, and distorting reality and creating alternate realities through the use of photo filters; they are even accused of promoting varying degrees of stalkerism.

Class of 2014: You have named your yearbook Instagram. I encourage you to explore why. What role do Instagram and pictures play in your present life? What role will they play in your future? Are you a leader among those whose photos you follow? Do your selfies and group shots accurately convey the person you are, or the person you wish for others to perceive you to be? Do your pictures celebrate and commemorate? Cr do they externalize and objectify? What powers do your pictures possess? What thousand words do they evoke?

Pictures can and will define you, quite possibly even dictate the course of your life, so make sure that what you post tells the true story of you - the bright and beautiful young woman who doesn’t need to compare, provoke, distort, or follow. May your pictures always reveal no more than is accurate and true about you, and no less than the blessing that you truly are, to everyone who views them.

In Loving Memory Zuleimi F. Torres September 7, 1996 - May 17, 2013 In loving memory of Zuleimi Torres; a proud and dedicated member of our family and the Academy of Mount Saint Ursula’s graduating Class of 2014.

Zuleimi was a true leader both in and out of school because of her will to inspire us all to value the life we have been given. Her capacity to love was limitless and through constant joy and affection, she shared that love with everyone that crossed her path.

A.M.S.U became a home away from home, where her friends became more like extended family, and gave her memories that she cherished.

Although she is not physically with us, we know that Zuleimi is forever present in our minds and in our hearts.

Zuleimi would want you all to know how much you meant to her and how proud she is of you, and that she wishes you all the very best in your future endeavors.

Dear Fellow Classmates of 2014, We are almost at the end of this long journey. These past four years have been the most challenging for all of us. AMSU has taught us all some valuable lessons; lessons that we will hopefully take with us into the new journey we are about to start. "Four years to last a lifetime", the first words we repetitively heard throughout our first days here at AMSU. Some of us have made long lasting friendships here, some discovered talents we were unaware that we had, while others matured and became beautiful, strong-willed young women who are ready to take on any and everything. Through all of the hardships and difficult times, with the help of our fellow teachers, staff, and each other, we all came together and got through each and every battle together as a family.

We hope you all enjoy this yearbook, and may it help you look back on the past years as you recall all of the exciting, bittersweet, and amusing times here at AMSU. This year book would not have been possible without our fellow yearbook staff members and Mr. Triana. Thank you to everyone who devoted their time to this yearbook. It was such a fun, yet interesting time working with you all. Although we often bumped heads and had our differences, we stuck together and created an amazing book. We hope you all are just as proud as we are at the work you all have done. Seniors, we came a long way together as sisters. There is no other group of girls we would have preferred to spend the past four years with. There is no other school like ours, and we are happy to have called the Academy of Mount St. Ursula our home away from home.
