Dear Class of 2012: We share one important common thread. We both arrived here to begin our relationship with AMSU in 2008. In the last four years we have seen many changes both in our country and in our school. Our nation elected its first black president, we simultaneously fought two wars, the nation and the world faced a financial wake-up call, freedom blossomed in the Middle East, the Shuttle program came to an end, to name just a few. Our school formed a partnership with the Metropolitan Opera Guild, the Juilliard, the Morgan, MSG Varsity, produced our first TV commercial, initiated the RCIA program, linked with Student Sponsored Partners, and entered its 158th year of educating young women.

Thank you for your presence these past four years! Remember the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” Congratulations!

Dear Seniors, The theme of Superhero for this yearbook is both a creative and appropriate metaphor for the class of 2012.

Your class has not only shown super-natural powers of grace, excellence and leadership but is also creative, helpful and talented. It is through your perseverance that events like. Thanksgiving Dinner, Open Mic, and Charity Champions continue to thrive. As your class steps forward and begins the journey to discover your place in the world, I know you will keep close to your hearts superheroes and heroines, like St. Angela, that have played a large role in your lives here at AMSU. Angela’s words, “Build community wherever you go” (5th counsel) are truly alive in the actions and deeds of the class of 2012. You have come to AMSU, and in true superhero tradition, have re-built our community and re-inspired its leaders to “live in harmony united in one heart and one will” (9th counsel). Keep the spirit of AMSU and the words of St. Angela burning in your hearts always. Know that this is your home and continue to return here to reflect on how far you have come and how far you will go with your feet firmly planted in the soil of this yet reaching like a laurel tree for the stars.

“The choice to lead an ordinary life is no longer an option.�

So says Peter Parker, when he discovers the powers he has been designated as Spider Man. When we call to mind a superhero, rarely, if ever, do we conceive of an ordinary person such as ourselves.

Instead, we generally envisage a stereotypical stock character from a comic book or film - one who is heavily costumed to conceal his or her identity, one who possesses superhuman strength and powers which are used in protection of the common man, to fight crime, and to right the most unjustifiable of wrongs. We admire superheroes for their willingness to risk their own lives and safety for the greater good of the whole.

It is entirely too easy for us to be content to view the concept of the superhero with superficiality, to live our lives through the superhero, letting vicarious experience satisfy our innate desires to do good and, ultimately, to change the world. I caution you all against such complacency, however, and advise you to stop for a moment and reflect on that which you have in common with the superhero, if for no reason other than to remind yourself at this critical juncture of your obligation to live a life that is extraordinary and that brings positivity and meaning to the world in some way. While you may not be capable of shooting lightning bolts from your fingertips or scaling buildings in single leaps and bounds, you do indeed have your own special powers, namely your beauty, your intellect, your faith, and your integrity. When used properly, the strength of these is immeasureable.

Like the superhero, you too have your own particular set of values and moral codes, all of which have been shaped in tandem by your family, your friends, your life experiences, and, of course, your four years at AMSU. Also like the superhero, you are not as invincible as you may feel, think, or seem. Everyone has her Achilles’ heel, her own particular brand of Kryptonite that serves to render her helpless and vulnerable. Take care not to let yourself be antagonized by your nemeses; instead, focus your energy on using your special talents to productive ends. Remember, always, that the AMSU graduate and her destiny are anything but ordinary; take a lesson from Peter Parker and refuse to live an ordinary life.
