To the Graduates of the Class of 2011: Sings Baloo to Mowgii: “Look for the bare necessities, the simple bare necessities ... forget about your worries and your strife ... don’t spend your time lookin’ around for something you want that can’t be found ...when you find out you can live without it, and go along not thinking about it. I’ll tell you something true, the bare necessities will come to you.” -The Jungle Book

In the aforementioned song, Baloo the wise bear reminds us that we humans do ourselves a great disservice when we place undue emphasis on our stressors and go through life searching endlessly for things that we think will make us happy. Our misguided notions of what is truly important in life are at the root of this problem, and thus we render the extent of our happiness contingent upon that which is ultimately inconsequential, for example, the level of our professional success, the amount of money we amass, or the perceived quality of the material items we possess just to name a few. Such notions push happiness further and further away from us, obscuring the elemental fact that happiness is indeed always very nearly within our reach. Our happiness is, in fact, assured by the existence of the simple bare necessities of life of which Baloo speaks: fundamentals such as love, good health, faith, family, and friendship. As you complete your senior year of high school and commence your journey into the real, adult world, I encourage you to reflect and to formulate a more enlightened perspective on that which is indispensible to you those bare necessities without which you simply would not be able to survive and to find satisfaction and contentment with them and, ultimately, with your life. Seek not to compare yourself with others; instead, be thankful for all that you have that is good; your beauty, strength, and intellect, your resilient spirit, your faith and your love, your solid education, your positive and meaningful relationships; for each and every one of you, the list is endless, I am sure. Remember always that when we release ourselves from our earthly desires, contentment will reign. May God bless you always with the ability to see and to value the bare necessities in your lives; may your lives be filled to overflowing with happiness.

I am writing these words in November 2010. There is no possible way for me to know what the world will look like on your graduation day of June 1T. I cannot make predictions or divine the future for you, me, our nation, or the world. Many times, events beyond our control shape our destiny or alter the course we have chosen. The best preparation is to be an adaptive, flexible, life-long learner. Seize opportunities. Learn from mistakes. Be open to challenges. Your years at AMSU have laid the foundation. Now build on it! Remember the words of St. Angela Merici: "Do something, get moving, be confident, risk new things, stick with it, then be ready for BIG SURPRISES. " Sincerely, Fr. What's happenin good people?! Let me just start off by saying that the four years that I have spent with each of you have been extraordinary. We've managed to create the most ^ optimism within the most unpredicted circumstances, and have come together as a class in when it was most necessary. In each and every instance we have displayed an immeasurable and inimitable companionship. W ithin each of you I have seen the w ill to make others succeed and the inflexibility in doing so yourselves. I w ill not wish for your future successes and happiness because I already know that the senior class does not need it. You have more than enough fervor to achieve this on your own. I w ill not hope to see you in the future because hoping would assume that we would never meet again. You w ill enjoy your lives "because we as a class have what it takes and I haven't a doubt in my mind. (Plus, you'll have to deal with me if you don't, so, in reality, you don't have much of a choice.) I'll keep all of you in my memories and heart...seriously. Peace out. Kasha Kash-Money Watson

We've made it ladies! Through the thick and thin, we've stuck it out, and now we stand at the crossroads of our lives. "Four years to last a lifetime"...These words could not be any truer.
