Dear Class of 2009: It is with great honor that I share these words with you. 1 have no doubt that as you leave the Academy of Mount St. Ursula, you will continue the stellar tradition of so many women who have graced the classrooms and halls of our school. They have excelled in education, finance, government, and the arts. They have raised families. They have volunteered in their communities. They live here in our city and well beyond. They have advocated for the poor and marginalized of our society. They have formed friendships which have been nurtured over the years. It is with pride that I meet these women, and it is with pride that I now include you among them. Build on the sacrifices your families have made on your behalf. Utilize the talents and skills you have been blessed with. Be caring and compassionate. Be loyal to friends and supportive of those who struggle. Know the difference between what is truly substantive in life and what is peripheral. Never let undue anxiety cloud your judgment or the desire for material things corrupt your spirit. May your hearts remain open to the spirit of love, which motivates all that is good. May your intellect remain attuned to the wisdom and insights of others. As you leave the Academy of Mount St. Ursula, be mindful that everything in life is a miracle, albeit God has a mysterious plan. Take with you the lessons that you have learned over these four years; choose hope over hate and the promise of the future over the poison of the past. In all the events, in all the education, in all the insanity, what remains important is the encounter, the connections that you have made at the Academy of Mount St. Ursula. There are opportunities waiting for you; there are voices you must listen to. There are people who will be described by how you reacted to their needs. The finished portrait of you, the one you can never change no matter how beautifully framed, will encompass the core and vision you enacted on behalf of others. Class of 2009, people come into our lives for a reason. So much of who you are is learned from those who came into your lives. As you graduate and recall how those at the Academy of Mount St. Ursula have rewritten the stories of your lives, I know you have re-written the stories of our lives, and because we knew you we have changed for the better. The Academy of Mount St. Ursula is a place that thrives on tradition; it is the very essence of its soul and character. Traditions, however, are not singularly significant in and of themselves; rather, they bear relevance in our lives for the impressions they leave upon us and for the ways in which they help us to grow and develop as individuals. The most important tradition that MSU holds dear is its commitment to facilitating such growth within its students, and, as a direct consequence, to graduating intelligent, confident, and capable young women just like each of you. Ralph Waldo Emerson shares with us the following words of wisdom; "Nothing is secure but life, transition, the energizing spirit." Your pending graduation signifies a transition from the comfortable security of your life at MSU to that of an entirely new, unexplored world, alive with hope and promise. The past four years at the Academy of Mount Saint Ursula have been an interesting experience. Being able to look at the completed pages of the yearbook, I am reminded of the diverse personalities of the student body, especially the class of 2009. I am grateful for all of the friends and acquaintances I have made here over the past couple of years, and wish them luck as we move on in life. I hope this book will be a memorabilia to all my classmates and the faculty. I would like to thank my fellow editor-in-chief and the rest of the staff who truly put their time and effort into the book. Also, I would like to thank Ms. Sitler as a moderator and a teacher for the advice she gave and Ms. Geiger for managing the business staff this year. We have been through difficult times and rough transitions throughout our four years. Yet, we overcame. There is no limit to our achievements.
