Hey, look it’s the “Three Amigos.” No really, it’s Just Adrienne Ocasio and her sophomore sisters, Sandy Placeres and Haizel Eyzaguirre.
Ring day was a special day filled with laughter, joy and tears. The day when seniors skated down the hill to the sounds of their sisters’ cheers. Each class got the chance to show how much they cared. They each had a special way of showing that they will always be there. Their little sisters, Class of ‘99, joined together to sing the seniors a song. “Count on Me” and always remember that our friendship will last a whole life long. A parody of MSU life, that’s what the junior skit was all about. Oh, it was a joyous day indeed, a day for a “Circle of Friends, ” no doubt.

Traveler: "I have just been on a great expedition.” Patron 2: "Wow! Where did you go?" Traveler: "I explored the Dark Continent, Africa, where I was told a story about the history of the black woman’s struggle called "Who Am I?” Then I went to Haiti where women united for the Haitian and Calypso dances. Next stop, Europe. I heard a beautiful song, "Pasadoble, te Quiero," that expresses a young lady's pride in Spain. In France, a group of Americans were causing a riot in a French Cafe, yelling, "Vive le France! Vive le France!" At the same time a group of chorus girls ran out into the streets of Paris and high kicked their way through the "Can-Can." Next came a lively festive dance in Italy, "The Tarantella," along with

a "Roman Water Dance" by lovely Latin Scholars. Then, I visited their neighbor, the Greeks, for some "Zorba." I back tracked to the "Emerald Isle," where two lovers were mourned in "The Fields of Athenry." I traveled further down and met a young girl dancing a high .spirited Irish step dance. I sailed on to the Far East and landed in India, where I grooved to a blend of modern and traditional Indian music. As I .sailed back to America, I first stopped in the Phillipines and watched the Filipinos dance the "Tinikling" and "Bulaklakan." Then, in Latin America, I "Merengued" and tasted some "Bachata Flavor.” Next thing I knew, I was humming "I Love You for Life." Patron 1: "Geez, how long have you been out of the country?" Traveler: "Who said I was out of the country? I was at MSU's Annual International Night!"

^^The Three Amigos MSU’s Administration... Sister Mary Beth Read, O.S.U. In the MSU community, one person in particular deserves to be acknowledged for her ongoing support and service to the student body, faculty and staff. That person is Sr. Mary Beth Read. Surprisingly enough, Sr. Mary Beth is not a native New Y orker. She was born in Philadelphia. When just a toddler, her family moved to Wilmington, Delaware where Sr. Mary Beth attended school first at St. Mary Magdalen and then at Ursuline Academy. Her fondest childhood memory is going to the beach with her family. She also enjoyed participating in several school clubs and activities and just “hanging out” with friends. As an ambitious young woman, she moved to New Y ork to continue her education at the College of New Rochelle. After two years there, Sr. Mary Beth joined the Ursuline Order. She earned her B. A. in English at Catholic University and her Masters in Religious Education at Eordham Uni versity. Sr. Mary Beth has had many interesting experiences. She worked at St. Jerome School and Parish in the South Bronx for nine years. She studied Spanish while living with a family in Puerto Rico. Sr. Mary Beth also attended an Ursuline Renewal in Rome and made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Sr. Mary Beth arrived at MSU in 1979. Over the past eighteen years, she has been a teacher and an assistant principal and is now proud Principal of MSU where she oversees the academics, administration, teachers, and students. She continues the Ursuline tradition by setting a tone of respect throughoutMSU. In recognition of her many accomplishments, Sr. Mary Beth would like to thank her family, friends and God.

Mrs. Catherine Madden In our busy school community, one outstanding woman refines the student body by encouraging punctuality, neatness and of course, NO hoop earings. Mrs. Madden was born and raised in Massachusetts. She went Anna Maria College in Paxton, Massachusetts and earned her M. A. in History and Political Science at Queens College. She later taught on both the junior high and high school level for thirteen years. It should come as not surprise that her favorite subject is Global Studies. In 1992, Mrs. Madden arrived at MSU. She became the Assistant Principal in charge of discipline, mainte nance, contracts and student affairs. She is very proud of MSU’s achievements and events, especially International Night. Mrs. Virginia Cerussi Without that special person who makes sure our schedules are established and report cards ready, MSU just wouldn’t be the same. Mrs.Cerussi was bom and raised in Manhattan. She attended elementary school at Our Lady of Pompeii in Greenwich Village and later attended high school at Holy Cross Academy which was a school for girls much like MSU. Mrs. Cerussi decided to continue her education at the College of Mt. St. Vincent where she earned her B .S. in Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics. She later earned her M.S. in Mathematics Education at Iona Col lege. At MSU, her many duties include course selection, report cards, honors assemblies, serving as chairperson of the Mathematics Department, and much, much more. In recognition of her many achievements, Mrs. Cemssi would like to thank her family, friends, and God.

Weird Science Math and Science Madness...
“One 1,000, two 1,000, three 1,000....Sold!” Inspired by “Arsenic and Old Lace,” Keisha Jones sets out to make her own concoction.
Have you seen the sequels to Sequential Math Part I starring X, Y, and Z and their children a, b, and c? Sequen tial Math Part II is targetted toward the sophomore audience while Sequential Math Part III toward the junior audience. For those avid junior and senior math fans, MSU producers are planning for the release of “Pre-Calculus and Calculus: Reaching the Limit.” Directors Calce, Creaven, Lomartire, DeLaurentis and Kowalewski are busy these days making final cuts and solving the ultimate equations. Did you know that science at MSU is electrifying? From mixing chemicals in chemistry to cultivating fly colonies in Advanced Placement Biology, students receive hands on experience in the science laboratory. Upon entering the laboratory, there is a metamorphosis from Dr. Jekell into a class full of Mr. Hydes. Aside from traditional classroom and textbook learning, students are given the opportunity to conduct actual experiments themselves .With the help of Mrs. Battaly, Mr. Klein, Dr. Campana, Ms. Knoesel, and Ms. Mosco, students are able to be mad scientist.

The History of the World: P arti” Early one autumn day, Sr. Jennie Seabrook and her fellow history teachers hopped into the MSU time-machine kept on the fourth floor next to the pool. There was little room to spare in the tiny machine with Ms. Sheehan, Ms. Corticcio, Mr. Henry, Ms. Errico, Sr. Elizabeth Ann, Ms. Romita and Sr. Jennie at the control panel. They flashed through time and joined the nomads crossing the Bering Strait and then met up with Magellan making his voyage around the world. Eamished from such turbulent travels, they stopped for supper at the first Thanksgiving and then dropped by the Boston Tea Party for some weak after-dinner tea. Next, they fast-forwarded to personally experience the rule of Napoleon, the colonization of Africa and the American Civil War. They stopped by some revolutions in Ireland, Russia. China, France, and Argentina. They returned to America for the last leg of their journey to relive the Civil Rights movement. Vietnam, Woodstock (Mr. Henry’s favorite), Watergate, Reagan’s two terms and the arrival of Socks at the White House. Overall the journey was long but the history teachers came back with knowledge unmatched by any other History Depart ment and ready to enlighten MSU students. Lord Corticcio orders her serfs to wash her overworked black board.

‘A n American in Paris’^ MSU Students visit Paris... Last April, a group o f students embarked on an eight hour journey in the sky and found them selves in the “city o f lights” - Paris, France. The girls, along with Mrs. Cerussi, Mrs. Brocks and Sr. A lice Marie, sam pled the sights, sounds, and foods o f France during their eight day trip. The group saw alm ost every major attraction in Paris. One afternoon included a trip to the world fam ous Louvre where they encountered fam ous works o f art including Da V in ci’s “M ona Lisa.” For the brave travelers, there was an opportunity to clim b (w ell, ride the elevator) to the top o f the Eiffel Tow er where the girls were met by a breathtaking view o f Paris. The group toured the Palace o f V ersailles and its elaborate grounds, the lily gardens and the hom e o f im pressionist Claude M onet, and the tow ns and chateau’s o f France’s countryside. Night tim e in Paris was also exciting. Som e girls took the Metro (Paris’ version o f the subway) into the city where they ate plenty o f ice cream, crepes, and crois sants. The girls also saw exactly how Paris lives up to her world-fam ous nicknam e on the “Paris-at-Night” boat cruise, at a G ood Friday vigil and during their nighttim e trips to the Notre Dam e. The girls that went to Paris w ill alw ays remember the tim es they shared there both learning about the culture and each other. “It’s like rain...on your vacation day.”

‘Stand and Deliver^* Religion and Service at MSU... Aside from academics, many of the young women at MSU are encouraged to participate in various community service activities. Students are involved in programs that allow them to feed the homeless, provide help in women’s shelters, tutor students both at MSU and in grammar schools, serve as mentors for pre-adolescent girls, and clean-up the environ ment. P.O.T.S. - Part of the Solution - allows girls to become part of that solution by working in a soup kitchen. Students help with child care programs at Concourse House. Tutorial programs are set up to help students at schools around the city as well as here at MSU. “Big Sisters” is a program designed to allow students to participate in a mentoring program for pre-adolescent girls. Eco-Sci allows MSU students to encourage their school community to recycle and participate in other activies that benefit the environment. With the help of Sr. Alice Marie and the Religion Department, students learn to truly follow M SU’s motto “Serviam” meaning “to serve.” Kate Ostrander brings gifts to the altar at the Ring Day Uiturgy that Fr. Vigilanti presided over.

Mrs. Brocks always makes sure that her students get a head stari on those college applications.
The Miracle Worker The Guidance Counselors of MSU “Help! Help! I need help with my college applications! I need help finding my classes! What is a Y-Day?” These are the sounds that can be heard from the various guidance offices at MSU. The three people who answer these pleas for assistance are Mrs. Buckley, Ms. Langford and Mrs. Brocks. Ms. Langford, who is in charge of making sure the freshmen adjust to life at MSU, can be found behind the scenes of all MSU dramatical productions. Mrs. Buckley, one of the mod erators of Student Council, handles both sophomore and senior guidance. Mrs. Brocks, Head of the Guidance Department, has the heavy responsibility of overseeing juniors start their college search and assisting the seniors in making their final choices concerning colleges. Whether they are consoling confused seniors, guiding lost freshmen, preparing juniors for the SATs or chating with sophomores, their neverending patience is much appreciated. Is it any wonder that they have earned the title “Miracle Workers?” Mrs. Buckley helps Madelyn Torres and Annie Youthjug make their deadlines.

‘‘Fried Green Tomatoes** and “Men at Work** It is a little known fact that the Culinary Artists and the Mira-Glo men of MSU have starred in their own films...“Fried Green Tomatoes” and “Men at Work.” The Culinary Artists work well together. The most popular dish at MSU is chicken tenders and fries (yum). Their most creative dishes are gyros, homemade pizza and tacos. The two things that never fail are the french fries and the homemade cookies for dessert. Everyday is a long day in the kitchen. Head Culinary Arist, Mrs. McCarthy, is in the kitchen from 6 A.M. until 2 P.M. A Mira-Glo man, Luis Pantojas, talked a little about the experiences of being one of the “Men at Work.” He spoke of the funniest and weirdest moments in the daily activities that they are involved in. The one story that stood out was the time Luis and the other workers, during the summer, were stipping the floors to wax them with a very slippery substance. The unknowing new helpers were told to retrieve something from the other side of the room, where they inevitably slipped and fell. This is Luis’ favorite pastime. Wooaaahhhhh! Behind this wall is the secret lockness monster of MSU.

It might just be coincidence that in our senior year, there are three Fridays that happen to fall on the thirteenth. It might also be a mere coincidence that the year in which we graduate, ‘97, is ‘79 backwards, the year in which most ofus were born. But then again it could be fate. You know what they say about Friday the Thirteenth...the usual superstitious stuff...beware of black cats and ladders, sprinkle some salt over your shoulder, etc. Even though almost all MSU girls sprinkle salt on their fries and avoid any stray cats in the Bronx, does that mean all MSU girls are exempt from the out of the ordinary events associated with Friday the Thirteenth? The 1996-1997 Varsity Basketball team was filled with dedication and perseverance. These MSU athletes practiced everyday from October to February, even on weekends. They gave it a 110%! Through the skillful coaching ofthe D’Angelos, the players learned there is more to playing than winning. This was proven by their good sportsmanship on and off the court. Despite some difficulties during the season, the team pulled together and managed to gain second place in the Bronx division. Congratulations to the team on a season of hard work!!!!!

The Junior Varsity Basketball team is made up of 14 girls who have determination written all over their faces. They are quick in mind and body and prove it to their opponents. Ms. DeGroat inspires them to be their best by coaching them on and off the court. This season the team captured the title of Bronx Champions because they were undefeated in their league. “Chariots o f Fire” and “Splash” Track and Swimming “Splish, splash!” The MSU Swim Club took laps in the Lehman College pool on Monday nights. Under the direction ofMs. Emco. these aquatic athletes shed their MSU uniforms for Speedos. Activities such as water basketball, Marco Polo, and races were a few of their favorite things to do. In addition to swimming, the mem bers ofthe club also enjoyed forming new friendships. “Run MSU girls, run!!!” The newly formed MSU track team heard this cheer during weekly track practice at the Botanical Gardens. Under the guidance of Ms. Errico, these potential New York City marathoners enjoyed running laps around the Bronx sanctuary. The many hills on their route made practice all the more exciting and a great way to build up stamina. Congratulations to these two hardworking clubs for their school spirit and determination. Last May, all of MSU’s athletes joined together at the annual Awards Banquet. Both the athletes and coaches were recognized for their hard work and determination shown throughout the year. It was very obvious that all of our teams were very successful in their seasons and MSU is proud of each and every one of them. The Pep Rally was a full day of spirit. At the closing of the day, all gathered in the gym to recognize and encour age all of the MSU athletes from cheerleaders to volley ball players. The audience was riled up, enjoying their friends’ moments in the spotlight and the exciting perfor mances of the cheerleaders.

In an effort to escape the pressures o f stardom and everyday life, a group o f Juniors along with Sr. A lice Marie, Mrs. K elly, M s. Calce and M s. Dorsi went on retreat to G oshen, N ew York. The first “The Great Escape” took place in October w hile its sequel “The Great Escape 11” occured in January. The retreat provided a time for the juniors to bond with each other and God. The weekend was filled with special m om ents such as the time when each girl received a plate containing adjectives provided by members o f the group. Another em otional m om ent was at the end o f the retreat when each girl received letters from people close to them. The Junior retreaters discovered the w ild side o f their chaperones when Sr. A lice Marie took out her various gam es like “Taboo” and “Encore.” Putting aside all fun and gam es, the chaperones made the Juniors feel right at hom e by giving them several household chores to do. The chaperones also knew just how to make the girls get up and get dressed in a hurry...by threatening them with scrubbing the bathrooms! During the retreat, the Juniors were given crosses to remember their spiritual experience. The Juniors proudly wore their crosses to school as a sym bol o f the bond that they had formed.

S e n io r s t a r s DISCOVER T H E PERKS OF TAK IN G A T R I P T O M O N TICELLO On a cold January m orning a group o f forty seniors embarked on a journey to Kutschers Lodge in M onticello, NY . These groggy senoirs aw oke bright and early and bundled up tight before boarding the bus. They rode in anticipation o f the m ounds o f snow and fun awaiting them. To entertain them selves along the way, they sang to Alanis M orrisette and the “G rease” soundtrack. W hile there, they enjoyed horse-back riding, snow m obiling, skiing, sw im m ing, sleigh-riding, dancing, and ice skating. Many adventurous seniors tried to conquer the alm ighty hill with sleighs and ended up paying the price with sprained knees and bruised tail bones. Those w ho attempted to ski tended to take more runs down the small hill rather than the riskier large one. At night the bruised and battered adventurers ate dinner and danced the night away. To wrap up the night, som e seniors even took a dip in the pool to soothe their aching m uscles.
