Oxfam America's 1993 Day O f Fast O x f a m A m e r i c a is a world organization that works towards the day when no one will go to bed h u n g r y . T o t hink that the day is far from here, overwhelms me to a point of helplessness.

Wondering "what can I do?" and not finding an answer is even more dis­ heartening. Perhaps this is the reason so many decided to participate in Oxfam America's Day of Fast. Sponsored by the national Honor Society on november 17, the fast

The day consist­ ing of a bagel, tea and a short prayer service, of­ fered us the opportunity to contribute, empathize and remember the words of Jesus, "Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto me."

The World Comes To MSU International Night 1993 Spanish, French, Italianeven Qreek- musi c was heard from all directions as various groups prac­ tise for I nt er nat i onal night. Finally, the great day arrived-the audito­ rium was buzzing, chil­ dren asked "Is it starting now? " and students were dealing last with last minute tasks. "Does a n y o n e ha ve a p i n ? " "Where's my costume?! " It was almost chaotic, but Ms. Peri and Sister Maria Rosa had every­ thing under control; vari­ ous faculty me mb e r s

lent a hand, and everyt h i n g h a p p e n e d on schedule.

The Culture Clubs had prepared a wonderful p r o g r a m ; the Go s p e l C h o i r and the Gael i c Club sang, the French Club recited, the Asian, Greek, Italian, and Span­ ish clubs presented char­ acteristic dances. Every gr oup got t hunder ous applause - the audience really loved it all. The last scheduled act was the Gospel Choir, who were followed by the sur-

prise of the evening. The five year old daughter of Mr. Elmor, Gospel Choir Director, belted out her version of a spiritual, bringing the audience to their feet to close out the evening.

Every year it seems that International Plight gets bigger and better. Can't wait to see next year's show!

The Senior Ski Trip -1 9 9 4 Early on January 12, ex­ cited members of the class of '94 departed for what would become a sweet and happy mem­ ory . . . the Senior Ski Trip. After and exciting yet anxious two hour bus ride, we arrived at our destination. We carried our luggage to our new, t e mp o r a r y h o me , our hotel rooms.

Kerry Qaine, Claudine Colon, Anna Qomez, and Alisha Mar­ tins were all safe and secure riding those snow-mobiles.

There were so many pos­ sible activities that it was hard to decide what to do first. If we didn't want to brave the cold, we could swim in the indoor pool or go dancing. Outd o o r s , we c o u l d go horse-back riding, iceskating, tobogganing, ride the snow-mobiles, sight-see (the scenery was breath-taking), or, of course, we could SKI! Ev­ eryone had a favorite ac­ tivity, but we loved every t h i n g . T h e r e was so much to do we hardly had a free second.

We n e v e r l a u g h e d as much in our lives be­ cause of all the ludicrous situations we found our­ selves in skiing and rid­ ing the snow mobiles.

Valentine Day, A Bit Late Semi-formal Dance, 1994 Among the many unex­ pected results of the nev­ er-ending snow storms of 1994, the Semi-formal Dance had to be post­ poned til March 12. The audi t or i um, however, still made it seem like Valentine's Day with its decor at i ons of hearts and heart-shaped bal ­ loons on the tables. The girls, all dressed up in their pretty dresses, also contributed to the party feeling.

Music was provided by DJ Serg, well-known for his mixing abilities. The Parents' Association pro­ vided chaperones and refreshments. Everyone had a good time talking, laughing and dancing.

Let's hope that next year the dance can happen at its appointed time, but, even if it's late again, it ^vill be fun.

A night To Remember The Father Daughter Dance On friday, november 12, fathers and daughters ar­ rived on time to enjoy a little fun and dancing. Ev­ eryone was in their best dr ess, ready to enj oy their evening. First, there was a hot dinner pre­ pared by some of the mothers and then the dancing began in the au­ ditorium.

The dance was set in the fifties time theme. Deco­ rations such as poodles and records were placed on the walls and tables.

The D.J. began to play the music according to the fifties theme and a few p e o p l e b e g a n to dance. As the night went on, the dancing picked up and some of the more m o d e r n m u s i c was

mixed in. The most pop­ ular dance of the evening seemed to be the Elec­ tric slide but some other favorites included "The Swim” , "The Twist" and of course the emotional "Daddys Little Girl” . At one point, some of the teachers joined in the fun.

By the end of the night, the windows were open and spirits were high. It was sad to see the night come to an end, but the memories will last a life time. As the girls left with their dads, it was obvi­ ous that everyone had e n j o y e d t he t i me t o ­ gether.

Mother Daughter Communion Breakfast On December 7, 1993, the Mount Saint Ursula Chapel was filled with students and their mothers, gathered together for the annual Liturgy, breakfast and Fashion Show. After Mass was celebrated by Father Vigi­ lante, it was on to the cafeteria breakfast had been prepared b y th e f a t h e r s . T h e m e n seemed to enjoy serving up the eggs, ham, pancakes and sau­ sage. After everyone had eaten their fill, the fathers cleaned up and sold raffle tickets amid a chorus of good-natured teas­ ing.

The festivities continued with the F a s h i o n S h o w, st ar r i ng MSU s t udent s wear i ng thei r own outfits. Daniela Field intro­ duced each participant who then walked through the cafe­ teria accompanied by the ap­ plause of all. Siobhan Bagely and her mother started off the fashion parade. The closing, to thunderous clapping, starred Chante Lewis-White and her parents, who wore Western out­ fits.

Mr. Costanzo and Mr. DiDonato worked so hard cooking, they look ready to pass out.

Pep Rally 1993

On december 9, 1993, M.S.U. had their annual "Pep Rally” and "Spirit Day” . Students were al­ lowed to waer maroon and white. When the end of seventh period came, most of the student body filed into the gym.

Traditionally, only the cheerleaders perform, but this year the Step Team was a great addi­ tion to the "Rally” . The student body was indeed filled with spirit which helped the performers feel at ease.

Ring Day Luncheon The Ring Day luncheon was held at Anna's Har­ bor in City Island. All se­ niors who attended the luncheon enjoyed it to the fullest. We turned each other's rings and took tons of pictures.

The food was fantastic, too. T h e l u n c h e o n added to the mood of the day. Our friendships were strengthened and

most of all we had FUni! At the end, we all got into one big circle and sang songs like "You've Got A Friend ", "Lean On Me ", and ""That's What Friends Are For" which made us remember our past times at Ursula. It al so ma d e us real ize how important we are to one another.

Let It Snow The Never Ending Winter Of 1994 This has been some win­ ter to say the least. Since D e c e m b e r 1 1 t h Dew Y o r k has recieved 15 s t o r m s and a p p r o x i ­ m a t e l y 50 i n c h e s of snows for the season so far. January seemed to be the worst month, for school that is. Everyone woke up glued to either 1010 Wins or 880 WCBS hoping to hear "Acad­ emy of Mt. St. UrsulaC l o s e d ' . Occasionally we would hear, "Accademy of Mt. St. Ursula-de­ layed opening", mean­ ing we would actually have to go to school and brave it up the ice cov­ e r e d h i l l . T h i s cy cl e stopped for a while and it

actually seemed like we were thawing out, until February came around with a vengance. At one point we received about 20 Inches of snow within two days, immobilizing the city. What seemed to be a st udent ' s dr eam was turning into a night­ mare. I could say this snow has been quite a hinderance to me in the production of this book.

The numerous amount of storms left me no choice but to schedule and reschedule picture taking. So as we face s t o r m # 1 5 1 t h i n k it l e a v e s us all s a y i n g "Enough Already! "

Junior Fun The Juniors have had an eventful year. There were so many things to be done. The SAT, home­ work, course selections.

Besides all the work we have had this year, there have also been some fun moments. In the begin­ ning of this year, we had the Fr e s h ma n / J u n i o r picnic which was fun be­

cause we got a chance to get to know our sisters better. On October 15, there was Ring Day; we got a chance to have some fun with the Se­ niors. This year's skit de­ picted life at Mount Saint Ursula in the 1970s. The uncontrollable laughter from the a u d i e n c e proved the skit to be a big hit. This year has def­ initely been interesting but 1guess the best part will be next year.

Juniors Welcome Freshman Sisters rreshman-Junior Picnic 1993 On September 25, the Juniors and Freshmen put away their books early to go out onto the sunny lawn for the annual Freshmen-Junior Picnic. The sisters all greeted each other with high spirits and eager faces in anticipation of getting to know each other better. Everyone enjoyed the food brought in by the Juniors. The food varied from sandwiches to Ken­ tucky Fried Chicken. Afterwards, some of the girls sat and talked with their sisters while others played games such as break the chain and double dutch. As the event quickly came to an end, the time came for us to clean up the lawn and return to the building.

Everyone left with happy memories and new friend­ ships.

The third annual Sophomore/Senior Breakfast e n a b l e d us to s p e nd time with our sisters and prepare for the exciting events to come. This day b r o u g h t ma n y h a p p y faces to MSU. It was dur­ ing the Sophomore/Senior breakfast that we joined together as a car­ ing family and realized that we may be going our separate ways, but we will still hold on to the friendships in our hearts.

Ring Day 1993 A Sophomore's View At 8:30 a.m., on October 15, 1993, the parking lot was cha­ otic. While many sophomores chose to wait on top of the hill at 199th Street and help their senior sisters skate down, oth­ ers stayed at the base of the school's driveway, toting bal­ loons and other gifts.

Liz Kay and the Photo Club were in the driveway with a video camera when the seniors started coming down. This Ring Day was quite unique because the seniors met their families on 199th Street instead of the parking lot. However, after a lot of excitement, the Class of 1994 finally moved into the au­

ditorium. (Congratulations to Ericka DeLa Rosa for reaching the finish line firsti) Before the rings were given out, the entire school was treated to the infamous Junior Skit. This year the Juniors outdid them­ selves by showing a flashback of Mount St. Ursula in 1976.

The Sophomores sang a heart wrenching rendition of "Wind Beneath My Wings, " by Bette Middler. Ring Day was terrific! It was a time for the M.S.U. Stu­ dent Body, along with faculty, families, and friends to salute the graduating Class of 1994.

Sophomores Say Goodbye Being a Sophomore can some­ times be difficult. We are con­ stantly under the pressure of trying to live up to higher ex­ p ec t a t i o n s . O n e t hi n g that manages to make Sophomore year a little fun is definintely o u r S e n i o r Si sters. S o p h o ­ more-Senior Sisters can always be detected. They are always the ones hugging as someone snaps a picture. Sisters are al­ ways there to listen to your problems, big or small. This re­ lationship is so unbelievable that it's hard to imagine among teenagers. Then again M.S.U. contains exceptional students.

T h e s e f riendships were not planned but 1 am thankful that they happened.

However, the hard part comes when we have to say goodbye.

We will be waving goodbye to girls that have been with us through good and bad times.

In my opinion Freshman year is the hardest because there is so much getting use too, and so many new things to experience.

FreshmanJunior Picnic On the last Friday of September, Juniors and Freshman united for the annual Freshman- Junior Pic­ nic - a time to get to know each other, eat and play games. At 12:30 streams of excited ninth graders joined their Eleventh grade sisters in front of the Convent and proceeded to the lawn.

All types of food was brought in.

Sandwiches, chicken and cakes were spread out on biankets and everyone had a feast. We were all having such a great time, nobody realized how late it was. Before we knew it, teachers were teiling us to clean up and get back to home­ room. Too bad there are not more picnics like the Freshman-Junior one.

The gowns are generally black in color and are worn with a hood and a cap. In most cases, the cap is the tradi ti onal m o r t a r - b o a r d with a black tassel (for Bache­ lor's and Master's) or a gol d one (for D o c t o r ­ ates), but some schools use a soft cap for this last degree. The hood is three to four feet long, depending on the de­ gree, with the Bachelor's

three feet. Master's three and a half feet, and the Doctorate four feet long.

The velvet band edging the hood is of different colors, each signifying the academic discipline of the wearer. People who earn their degrees in Arts, Letters, and the Humanities wear a white b a n d . Fi ne Ar t s wear br o wn . Music is pink.

The shape of the sleeve is also different depend­ ing on the degree. The B a c h e l o r ' s gown has wide sl eeves; for the Master's, the sleeves are partially sewn to form an oblong shape hanging down in the rear; finally, the sleeve on the Doctora te G o w n h a s a cuf f f or mi ng a bi l l - shape.

Gener al l y, the hoods lend the main color to the procession except for those which include graduates of Universities which use red or maroon

material for the Doctoral gowns.

The gown for diplomas are a light color. For M. S. U., the graduates wear white caps and gowns.

The students lead the procession into the cere­ mony, followed by the Faculty; the Administra­ tion, and the Board of Trustees bring up the rear, but lead the way out.

Spotlight On Paris

Trip To France-1993 Each year, MSU students are given the opportunity to tour a European coun­ try during Easter vaca­ tion. In 1993, the spot­ light hit glorious and ex­ citing France. Twenty six students took advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, accompa­ nied by chaperones Mrs. Cerussi, Mr. Prackler and Mrs. M a d d e n . Many m i g h t g r o a n at t h e thought of a chaperone, but these made our trip exciting and definitely worth-while.

The air flight was about 7 hours to Orleans. After two days of the beautiful countryside, it was on to Pari s, the w o n d e r f u l "City of Lights". Many c o m p a r i s o n s can be made between Paris and Hew York. In both cases, most of the people were nice, although on occa­ sion, you will meet a few rude or uncaring individual s. Li ke Hew Y o r k , Paris has its f a m o u s sights. Some of the ones which will remain in our memories are the Eiffel

Tower, Hotre Dame, the Arch de Triumph, Hap o l e a n' s t omb, Sacre Coeurand Versailles. We also visited the original 'Mona Lisa" and other famous art at the Louvre.

I am sure I speak for all when I say we had a fan­ tastic time - C'est magnifique. So, if you get the chance, GO! Many of us hope to revisit some day.

Open House Open House is designed to give eighth graders a glimpse of life at MSU. Open Houses are held annually, and include a variety of activities for the perspective students and their families. They are taken on tours of the school and are informed about teachers, courses, clubs, and the history of the school. There is also a pr esent at i on of the clubs and sports of MSU, where the are free to ask questions and look into the clubs they might be interested in. We hope future Open Houses will be as successful as this year's was.

Earth Day 94' On April 22,1994 Is Earth Day at MSU. The Science fir Ecology Club is holding a fund-raiser to help preserve a species of animal called the Manatee. The mana­ tee is an endangered animal because they are being killed by speed boats which travel in their natural habitat the ocean, and rip their skin off killing them instantly. There are only a certain number of manatees In the world today. The Science Ecology Club Is selling T-shirts to raise money to donate to an orga­ nization who are trying to stop the killing of these Innocent animals. We are also planning to adopt a couple of manatees, In a effort to learn more about them and help them. On Earth Day, the Science fir Ecology Club and any interested MSU students are welcome to Join us in planting a couple of trees or bushes on the school grounds. This Is a symbol of the returning of natural resources that was taken away by human developmental activities. Any one who bought an Earth Day t-shIrt is planning to wear them to support the efforts of conserving natural resources, and reduce the effect of human activities which destroy those resources. For example- pollution, destruction of habitat, and dumping of hazardous waste products. The result of this can deteriate environmental condi­ tions, and cause the extinction of plants and animals. We hope everyone Is In the spirit of Earth Day and everyone plans to help conserve our environment by not destroying It. Julee Mathlakutty '97

Science Olympiad T h e Sc i en c e O l y m p i a d was held at St. Francis College. It was an exciting competition where many schools competed in various areas of science, in order to "bring home the gold" and hopefully proceed to the next level of competition at West Point.

Preparations began well before the event in some cases, and a few nights before in others. Our bridge building competition en­ try, despite long hours of effort, was h a l t e d j u s t bef or e the Olympiad by a freak of nature (gravity). Also, the Rocks, Min­ erals and Fossils and Quantita­ tive Analysis groups had a fairly good showing despite a short preparation time, achiev­ ing fourth and fifth places re­

spectively.

Between competitions, we had little trouble entertaining our­ selves. We ate granola bars and Q.O.R.P. as well as console others who thought they did badly. Eventually, we also in­ troduced ourselves to students from other schools and col­ lected tidbits of information for next year's event.

The star of the team was Wendis Santana, who tied for first place in the "Designer Qenes " competition. It is ironic that Wendis prepared for Cell Biolgy in her A.P. class and still was successful in the category of genetics.

Family Day 1994

Lunch at Mt. St. Ursula is a time to loosen up and spend quality moments with friends. Friendships are born and flourish over french fries and soda. This serves as our free time to converse about topics ranging from academics, current events to our own social lives. This relaxing part of the day day is a much needed "’f release from the stresses of everyday life.

■ Teachers and students alike find relief over salads and health food. Some use the time to interact with : studuents and discuss life outside the classroom. One teacher in particuular has started a gradually 1 developing tradition of entertaining the girls while they eat. Through song, Mr. Stapleton can bring an entire cafeteria full of girls together to join him in unique, impromptu renditions of "My Girl” and other popular standards. As the students laugh and sing, one feels a connection to those they do not know and therefore evoking a sense of family. And you know you'd rather be nowhere else than at lunch with your friends at Ursula.

This February, something new was seen in the Junior corriders at Mount Saint Ursula - as a project in Health, every Jun i o r b e c a m e the p r o u d "mother " of a really sweet 5 pound baby. Each girl had to buy a 5 lb. bag of sugar, dress it or wrap it in a baby blanket, and carry it everywhere. Some people became very inventive - t hei r babi es had heads, arms and legs - while others were content to wrap their ba­ bies in a blanket, nursery ar­ eas had to be set up in every Junior classroom, but it was all done with a smile.

The Juniors learned a lot abo u t r esponsi bi l i t y, and about being tied down by this.

Some Freshmen took great pleasure in " Baby- si tt i ng” their Junior sisters' babies, and some Seniors demanded to know why they never got a chance to try it out! It seems likely that a new Mount Saint Ursula tradition has had its start!

The Missions is a fundrais­ ing activity that's purpose is to provide help for those causes that need it. This year, a group of Seniors, headed by Mr. Casale, have collected money through the sales of personalized Christmas ornaments and other Christmas gifts, and also Class of '94 and l.D. bracelets. These sales have been very successful, and therefore will be donated to an organization that will use it for the benefit of oth­ ers.

Columbia Press Conference On Monday, November 1, 1993, selected students from Mount. St. Ursula's Melange, Montis, and The Mount at­ tended the 54th Annual Fall Conference of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association at Columbia University. They joined other students from around the country in workshops and discussions given by experts in virtually all fields of the media. Famous photographers. Journalists, and published authors advised eager and attentive student experts on im­ proving their respective school presses. Topics discussing everything from elliptical poetry to a multicultural approach to journalistic writing were covered.

Masses A t M.S.U. Mount Saint Ursula started its school year wi t h t he t r a d i t i o n a l m a s s e s , h e l d in t he chapel, for all the stu­ dents and faculty. We then had the Thanksgiv­ ing Mass with costumed students presenting the gifts, fol l owed by the school-wide Christmas and Ash Wednesday lit­ urgies. These were held in the auditorium since the chapel is not big enough for the school community of over 550 people.

It was a r oar i ng success; Rob Bergmann made his final appearance in an MSU production, co-starring with Kerry Qaine. Set in the Pacific duri ng the Second World War, the play is a tender musical detailing the love which

Due to bad weather, the season ended with only a mere 6 games. The bears played just under 500 with a final record of 2-4. The 1994 season has great potential as new uniforms and new equipment are being pur­ chased. Along with this, a 14 game schedule has been established which will give the girls the experi­ ence they need.

Varsity Basketball This season has been very rewarding for the Mount Saint Ursula Bears, who ended the Bronx season with a rec­ ord of 15-0 and were named Bronx c h a mp i ­ ons. They then went on to beat one of MSU's leading rivals. Cardinal Spellman, in a champi­ onship game. This vic­ tory entitled Ursula Be a r s to r e c e i v e the Bronx/Westchester title.

This was a major accom­ plishment for the Bears because for the first time in 15 years, MSU was able to compete for the Archdiococin Champion­ ship. The Bears' winning streak led them to vic­ tory in a game against n o t r e D a me ( t he 3rd

place team in Staten Is­ land). This victory en­ abled the team to play St. Peters, the first place team in Staten Island, but Ursula was defeated.

It was still not over for the Bears as they went on to play in the state games for the "D " level.

Unfortunately, MSU lost their 1st game against Bishop Loughlin, an ex­ tremely aggressive team f r o m B r o o k l y n , by a heartbreaking 2 points.

This was a major upset for the MSU Bears; the season was definitely over. Even so the Ursula Bear s are e x t r e m e l y proud of their 18-4 rec­ ord. We will come back next season to take it all!

Asian Club The Asian Club is an or­ ganization for MSU stu­ dents who are interested in Asian culture and peo­ ples. Asian students, as well as non-Asian stu­ dents, join together to appreciate the rich Asian heritage by participating in International night and other Asian oriented activiteis. Members of the Asian Club Join a vi­ tal c o m m u n i t y which treasures the traditional, as well as the modern, aspects of Asian culture.

PHOTOQFIAPMY CLUB In the Photo Club, we learn basic skills such as taking and developing pictures, operat­ ing video cameras, and wood burning. Although this takes time and dedication, we do have fun along the way. We re always involved in MSU's big events such as Ring Day, the Prom, Graduation, and school plays and shows. We re also involved in other events at dif­ ferent schools. Such events are St. Philip neri's kindergar­ ten and eighth grade gradua­ tions.

The Science and Ecology Club studies new informa­ tion, di ssemi nates it to other students and faculty, encourages recycling in the school community and par­ ticipates in extracurricular science experiments. In ad­ dition, the club has planted trees, shrubs and flowers to help beautify the school grounds and to assist the fight against global warm­ ing. Several of the Club members also actively par­ ticipated in the regional Science Olympiads. Students Against Drunk Driving The purpose of Students Against Driving Drunk is the educate the school community and the general public about the dangers of drinking and driving. SADD has sponsored seminars by people involved as victims in order to better show stu­ dents the possible conse­ quences. Melange Melange is a literary magazine designed to showcase the poems and prose of the school community. Meetings are held regularly, where students' works are read and chosen for the magazine, which is published annually, depending on the quantity and quality of the submissions.

Conceit Every year, in December, Mount Saint Ursula pre­ sents its Christmas Con­ cert. The Glee Club, un­ der the direction of Mr. Paccica, joined the Gos­ pel Choir, led by Mr. Elmore to present a very spirited and yet spiritual musical evening. Par­ ents, friends and mem­ bers of the school com­ mu n i t y t ur ned out to show their support for the singers, and also to enjoy the music. Davina Best and Charise Osburn sang a duet, while Linda Obasi sang a song she had written herself. The concert was enjoyed by all, and we look forward to the next one.

Dear Classmates, When we first started this yearbook last June, we were very excited about making this year's yearbook different.
