'â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Somewhere a hill blossoms In green and gold. . .

For tlie Freshmen, today is like an awakening at dawn.

For the Sophomores, today is a morning full of ideas.

For the Juniors, today is an afternoon of expectation.

And for the Seniors, today is an evening to remember yesterday, to play today, and to hope for tomorrow.

Peach gym suits com plete with snaps, Fordham mixers or Central rides, the unfam iliar freedom o f a weekly bus pass, reading skills and art appreciation, and last but certainly not least, Buster Brown originals and their requiem . . . Unquestionably, we were at last fu ll-fled ged , top ranking, newly-polished Freshmen of MSU. Scien ce prevailed throughout '66 in both the m echanical and fantastical. While the m ajority o f us were m eeting our com puter-m atched ideals, a select group, following in the steps of Einstein him self, concocted a bomb which left the school intact, but sent its inventors to Montefiore. In the history department, the Mount acquired an added dimension. With our new m ale teacher, we not only becam e involved in the problems o f the West Indian and the Chinese C o o lie, but we also learned the art of self defense during the infrequent ritual of flying books and profound verbosities. Oh, A lic e where are you?

Reserved seats in the balcony, daily quizzes in Latin, inevitable assignments after the b e ll, the death of the fish in room 307 (peppermint poisoning?)

We were also exposed to a certain English teacher who each day increased the rate o f snapping her fingers and who very unselfishly shared with us her knowledge of the red-breasted bird which flew from tree to tree on our expansive campus. Nor can we forget the detailed enactment o f the Odyssey in a certain eighth period English class by the m ulti-talented pseudo-cyclops.

O f course, a class history would not be com plete without a recounting of the fine school spirit exhibited by student and faculty alike during that first year. "Never say D ie" was the distinguished battlecry of room 302, and our very own home economist. Patty Pathmark or Carla Crochet as you may see it, saved the day many moons ago. If our records are straight, it was a m ere telephone c a ll which brought those two tardy players to the court, and to school for that m atter, and 302 was again able to clinch the Freshman basketball victory.

Indeed it was a year to be remembered! The Fordham boat ride. Sister Clem ent's art class and the famous but unknown councillor, Rita Spallows, (or was it "Read as follows"?), the rolling orange during reading lab.

Miss Kane, forbidden water pistols on Class Day, lunch during 5 - 2 and waiting on line. A ll have passed now into the archives o f MSU. Our braces off, our bangs growing out, our ears pierced, we were at last upper-lower classmen - better known as Sophomores.

Septem ber-1967. We were now, in the words of one famous English teacher, "wise old sophom ores."

We had heard many stories about the greatest social event of sophomore year - the T ea - but we had no idea that we too would be contributing to those tales. The most m em orable question of 1967 was, "Did you ask him yet?" During fourth period lunch the floors, tables, and chairs were lined with empty tuna cans, M etrecal containers, calorie counters, etc. Just thirty pounds lighter and those unwilling victim s would be un­ able to resist us!

October brought Mission Day and perfect weather - a com fortable seven degrees with a threat of snow.

But we had dozens of bottles of Florida soda water, and Sister G race's pretzels and candy counter to keep us go­ ing.

We had dreamed the previous June of getting that handsome new English teacher about whom we had heard so many rumors. Sophomore year made that dream a reality. We even learned a little Religion along with our English. He taught us the position of women in society and some crazy scandal about a little boy on a rocking horse! And, of course, who can forget the blue spruce tree and our friend, the rock?

November quickly m ade its debut, and with it cam e improved attempts at eye contact. However, we were to learn that our dear Mr. Zam alcani was leaving us for bigger and better things - a com fortable retirement home in Florida or something. The thought of starting a new term without speech upset us. We'd never make it through the Tea without knowing how to handle our ey e contact. Mr. Z com e back!

We did get a new speech teacher, however, and many hidden talents of our classmates were developed, including the ability to throw spitballs, to dance in an old Folks Home, and set up a Western saloon a la Blue Hotel.

Religion was as inform ative as ever thanks to the help of those mysterious little tapes. The latest issues of H i-T im e , what was holding up the city buses, and the Barber of S eville's close shave also added to our great store of knowledge.

M eanwhile the countdown for the T ea continued, and at 4:00 PM, Febmary 10, 1968, the largest number o f couples that ever attended an MSU tea presented themselves. The romantic intim acies of the blue lights and full sun were the beginning of a glorious and m emorable evening. Whenever we ran out of things to say, we could counter with, "To be you and to speak you are inseparable; that is to say, to be you and to speak you are inseparable. " It works every tim e.

There were many unexpected happenings in the spring of '68. Certain visitors decided to stop in and view the world of Mount from the back window sill of 103 - the termites! The soda m achine, at this tim e decided to "be free", and as a result, gym was cancelled for many days. However, a certain gym teacher later fought back with such tactics as jogging to the softball field.

An innovation that greatly pleased us was a retreat - not the common retreat, but one with seminarians young and handsome. No one ever did find out why that one group cam e out of 102 hysterically crying.

Freshman-Sophomore Class Day brought us defeat. But after a ll, we did show our superiority the following year, didn't we?

Teacher's Recognition Day caught some sophs stepping quite liv ely to such classical tunes as "Sunny" and "Tighten U p ."

Senior-Junior Class Day was a sad event. As the sister class of the beloved seniors, we sang our sad song of departure to the mne of "Y esterd a y." The tears were real, and even the sophs were crying.

Who w ill ever forget the illustrious visit of the famed author of our math book? Remember her? "And over here . . . " It was hard to b elieve another year had ended. This one had gone so fast. We didn't even have tim e enough to figure out if we had caught sophomoritis. The US gam e had been introduced to Mount. N elly was another year older, our gym floor had aged. Sister Cornelius was leaving us, and there was talk of new m ale bio, chem , and English teachers.

Y es, it was'indeed "a very good year" for the class of '70 who were now fading sophomores and blooming juniors.

''Zo be able to do something we've never done before . . . '

We had arisen from upper-lower-classm en to lower-upper-classm en. How can we forget Room 300, better known as the "C om m unity," and all their three o 'c lo c k discussions on manners and grace? Or Room 303’s "littlest angel" who spent the whole day trying to take attendance? Then there was Room 304 where every after­ noon one could hear the class join in one grand chorus of "We gotta get out o f this place. " W hile 305 contained those "lucky Juniors" of the Fordham religion class, 306 had a few problems all their own. W ill those girls ever forget the precious plants and Hummels that were in their care, or the continuous complaints they received about the "foul air"? Room 308 also had some fond memories; especially about a certain "com m unity" desk.

Remember that teacher who was always giving us some " l it ’l" advice about life , - some purposeful insight into everything! Unfortunately, she received " lit'l" response from her class, and therefore resorted to talking to the blackboard. But by no means were her classes undem ocratic. We could express our opinion by vote, even though it took h alf the period to tally up the results. Seriously though, she was a great help in teaching us the alphabet - PSAT-SAT-N M SQ T, etc. ^ ^ Our m athem atical inclinations were just as confusing. Remember sin 0 + cos 0 = 1 and the sky is blue b e­ cause . . .

How can anyone describe that jo lly Irishman who deep down inside really wished h e were Italian? He is definitely, to say the least, one o f our most loquacious educators. M eanwhile, other Am erican History Classes learned not only facts, but also a few incredible stories about a little boy named Neily and his geese. Postures improved, as our new Thursday gym teacher. Colonel Klink had us all standing at attention and about-facing at her command.

The social highlight of the year was the sem i-form al dance. The Junior Prom wasn’t as crowded as one of our mixers; however, it was just as successful. As usual, the Junior Prom was an extensive roll c a ll of Fordham Prep boys, minus a few because of a previously planned ski-trip.

From Fordham, let us travel farther north to Malone. One achieved a little more success with these knights of the North Country, because unlike the Fordham boys - they danced! Few remember that they lost their basketball gam e since memorable romances did spring up during their stay.

The first semester of Junior year also had a few culm ral moments; particularly the tim e that a certain Junior went walking through the halls displaying the Scarlet Letter on her chest. Or the tim e that an actress in the Junior Ring Day Play mistakenly called her son, Oliver Crom well instead of Oliver Pendleton Redfield III, The start of second semester provided more fun at Scranton. The Hotel Casey again awaited the arrival o f all the Sodalists. However, by some strange misunderstanding, three Mount girls were roomed directly across the h all from two gallant romeos.

Junior year proved to be very successful. First, rooms 306 and 308 beat the "Invincible" when they cam e out first on Mission Day. Next cam e Class Day. This had been a long awaited triumph. Our first victory, though only the first of m any, proved that the Class of '70 was truly "Supreme. " As underdogs we sank the Pirates of '69 and had a rainbow in the sky to prove it. Tears flowed freely and excitem ent rose again for the upcoming gam e with the Class of '7 1 . Undaunted, we "marched on to victory. " Senior year seemed far away, but actually it was just one short summer away. A summer to be filled with "hot fun in the summertime" and A .P , History reports due every week!

Y es, those were the days, my friends, we thought they'd never end. But they did.

Hi, y 'a ll" - eclioing the halls could be heard the now fam iliar phrases of die new faculty members "Girls, don’t marry a boy out of p ity ." "We will now learn the bank balance sheet - for the third time, " T o all our new teachers - "Thanks for die memories. " Along widi new sounds, diere were new sights and we were beginning to think diat they were film ing Dr. Kildare as wheel chairs and crutches paraded through die halls.

Dribble down the? court, shoot them high, beat that team so w e 'll get b y ." At least h alf o f Mount cam e to cheer our newly formed varsity who would finally take Mount down from "Snob H ill, " With pride we a c­ cepted tlird place, knowing it was not a disgrace, because we really won the highest acclaim - die school spirit award! Keep the faith, cheerleaders.

The senior entrance now served some useful purpose as it was transformed by electric rollers and m ake-up mirrors for the grand opening of our own beauty salon. One by one each graduation picture was taken, and it was hard for the judges to decide which girl, cam ouflaged under a pound of m ake-up, should receive the "Miss Photogenic A w a rd ." After little deliberation, it was decided that Miss Francine McKeon should be its proud possessor.

Betty Crocker would have been proud of our little home makers as they m ystified the school with their apple sauce and scarves. Peter Max would have been equally proud of the artistic ability shown by our "work­ men. " 8 A .M . - Ring Day, 1969. The inhabitants of the Concourse were shaken out of bed to the tune of rusty roller skates and "Girls of Mt. St. Ursula. " Most of us made it back to school without the loss of too much blood and after the Junior play we were on our way to the Steak Pub dazzled by the crimson gems upon our fin­ gers. Nighttim e activities proved to be very interesting. Some girls felt an urge to act like wild Indians.

W ho'll ever forget Running WATERS? Others went in for m.ore domestic activities lik e sewing split pants in a dorm of a nearby co lle ge . As long as the rings are on our fingers, how w ill we ever forget the memories be­ hind October 17, 1969.

Because of financial conditions, the Senior sem i-form al might be called "the dance that almost wasn't. " Girls who went felt as if they were still paying for it two months later as they dug into their pockets for debt reduction collections. But the dance was a success, so perhaps they didn’t mind it so much. It was radier sad for the girls, who after weathering tlie Sophomore T ea and the Junior dance, realized that this was their last sem i-form al at Mount. The next and final dance would be the Prom.

The brisk weekend of January 17 carried 34 Seniors on an unexpected experience - the retreat at Beacon.

It didn’ t turn out to be the usual sermon on the "Mount" because of the beautiful man. Father Scully. He made our confessions, discussions, and revelations m eaningful. It was a trial not only for our souls but also for our stomachs as we "feasted" on Sister Ruth's "homemade" lasagne and Sister Bob's "m eatballs. " A ll in a ll, it proved too much for one girl who had hallucinations about losing her room.

We had travelled through three years of waiting and anticipating. It finally arrived - our journey of a thousand m iles! And for 48 girls on the bus with no bathroom, it was even longer! Somehow the desire for m eeting Canadian men diminished as we sang love ballads to Cousin Brucie, D ick ie, and Ronnie a ll the way to Quebec. Our free tim e activity-in Canada was packed with visiting churches, sleigh riding, visiting churches, skating, visiting churches . . . C alm ly some girls waited for bedcheck and the knock on the door to bring out the "wine" and begin the "w ild p arties." Fearful of getting caught in the halls after bedcheck, one girl in a frenzy knocked on every door till someone let her in. Tearfully we said our goodbyes to the castle we had m ade our home and boarded the buses for Montreal. We hit the most fashionable side of the city for our night­ tim e adventures - dancing at the "discotheque," shopping at the "peace boutique" and snacking at the Black Bottom. Some girls spent the night looking for the pool (appropriately attired!) while others photographed C anada’s naked beauty. In a mixture of sadness and joy we made our way home from an experience that was all too short.

King 'Day Address "It was the best of times; it was the worst of times; it was the age of wisdom; it was the age o f foolish­ ness; It was the epoch of b elief; it was the epoch of incredulity. It was the Season o f Light , . . , the spring o f hope . . . , and we had everything before us, " It was September, 1966, The hopes and dreams of those first high school days have been sighted today.

And, as the last o f the four years nears com pletion, each of you looks back and marvels at the rapid passage of tim e, "It was the best of times " No doubt you can recall that first day, when, as a w ide-eyed freshman, armed with sharp #2 pencils, Mt, St, Ursula notebooks, and a great ambition to succeed, you entered the sacred portals. Indeed, your "spring of hope" had dawned, "It was the age of wisdom , , , " The years following were enriched by developm ent. Your expansion as a person resulted from your relationships with others, and the experience gained in those human situations was invaluable.

And now, that which was before you has becom e a reality. You sit here, admiring your precious sym ­ bol o f growth, devotion, and past aspirations.

Holding to the past, yet grasping for the future, you face the new world that awaits beyond.

Your ring symbolizes dedication. Keep that dedication for it w ill be called on for years to com e, and the ultim ate success of your vocations w ill depend heavily upon it.

The garnet sym bolizes durability. Guard that durability. It, too, will be summoned forth to fortify the strength you must have in your convictions, and in a world wracked by indecision, it will be a valuable asset.

The gold represents wealth. Your years at Mount have been rich in human experiences, and the hap­ piness, unity, and love you have found have been precious gifts, indeed.

The gold of the ring may tarnish, but you must never allow your interest in those around you to dim.

The circular shape of the band itself sym bolizes fid elity. Keep that loyalty unfalteringly, for to do otherwise would discredit all for which your ring stands.
