P a tternS Everything in the universe establishes its identity through a pattern. T h e planets revolve around the sun in an unbroken orbit; the seasons follow one another in immutable sequence— creating, nourish­ ing, destroying life; the seas rise and fall in the same uninterrupted undulations as they have dorie since the beginning of time. M an, too, follows a basic pattern th a t places him foremost in the physical world. We are all born with certain equal traits th at are proper to a hum an being; beyond these, each man is endowed with personal, extraordinary gifts.

It is through the use of these gifts th a t the individ­ ual creates his own unique pattern. This striving to establish an identity makes up w hat we call “ life.”

Life— the essence of poetry. Life is poetry. Each man is given the framework within which to write his own epic; of course, there are stringent regula­ tions of meter, rhyme, and rhythm to which all must conform. Yet, within these fundamental patterns, one has complete freedom to say whatever he chooses.

You wrote the first lines of th a t poem seventeen years ago. Since those vague and hazy beginnings, each day gave you the opportunity to polish, to ponder— to create. Only four years ago you were struck by a strange new era. For the first time, amorphous notions sharpened into ideals; emotions grew deeper and more forceful. . . . You were begin­ ning to discover yourself!

Today, it is not a girl b u t a woman who remin­ isces about the awkward, stumbling phrases of her youth as compared with the ideas th a t grew more fluent and profound with every new experience. . . .

Remember th a t the verse is unceasingly living, growing . . . reaching out to the world in an effort to touch it all. As years sift past, the poem will speak of m any things— the heights and depths of emotion, the accompishments— and the defeats. Yet, each man should have a message to give to the world, for no m atte r how exalted the success or lamentable the failure, the poem speaks some truth, however fragile. I t is a thing of infinite mystery and beauty— your pattern!

C a la is J re d lim a n In early September of 1964, the Class of ’68 ar­ rived a t M ount St. Ursula. I t was raining, an omen perhaps? T o no avail we were given floor plans to help us find our way about the school. Rumor has it th a t the spirits of some of our fellow classmates still roam the corridors in search of St. Jo h n ’s. But courageous group th a t we were, we set out th a t day on our careers at M ount, a few of us making more noise than others in our shiny new oxfords.

We did adjust, though. Our lips managed to stay closed at retreat, in the halls, in the classrooms, and outside after lunch. If not for general science we would not have detected so easily the symptoms of lock jaw we were developing. Our sense of timing adapted itself first to Friday schedule, featuring lunch at the door on our way out, and then to Tuesday schedule, where first period was fourth, sixth was fifth, and seventh was third unless, of course, there was a solar eclipse when third was fifth, and . ..

October brought Mission Day in the auditorium, a big success. Novem ber introduced us to a four-hour Hootenanny, followed by a tw enty-m inute mixer held in the cafeteria. December m eant Christmas, but it also m eant J a n u a ry exams were closing in on us. Oh yes, our first J a n u a ry exams!! We marvelled how all the a ttem pts to borrow our neighbor’s thoughts were thw arted by a clever seating arrangement, where we were placed perpendicularly diagonal to the bisectors of all those who were taking the same exam.

W ith the excitement of half a year behind us, once again we settled down to the Patterns of life at M SU: Hi-Time letters which rivaled those received

T o break up the monotony we watched Anne G ray’s leg heal, translated stories about “ nude gla­ diators,’’ held tea parties, dissected a mouse, and practiced our gym dances. All “ uncultured little girls” took “ note and noticed,” especially to see if their desks contained any suspicious-looking packages for the bomb squad. The classes spent the rest of that day wearing their sneakers and rubbing their toes.

As Phoebe, Pierre, and Hepzibah read about Ulys­ ses, Penelope and Telemachus, others wished they were Oscar Meyer Weiners. Perhaps the secret was contained in those etiquette books we dutifully read.

Then there were trips. Our journey to Stratford gave birth to our own production of Romeo and Juliet, seen by a select few— a very select few. And there was Lincoln Center, where a lucky group had the opportunity to wave the ribbons of their uniform hats in rhythm with the music. But Center Moriches was our triumph, our -piece de resistance, cul-de-sac, too. Its strange facilities and icy waters provided a change of scene for all.

And we had fun. This was most noticeable in general science classes, where when bored we could admire Miss Gore’s Good Guy sweatshirt, or the appearance of Miss Hickey in the “ M ajority of One”, or class games, where St. Augustine’s was ever vic­ torious. And Class Day, where though not as vic­ torious, we tried even harder for victory.

Our class had a questioning mind, producing such gems as: W h a t is the average age of a protazoa when it splits?. W h a t did you say the puppy did in geography?. Did she really take your books, Betty?, and W h a t did you say the bird did in geography?

But most important, there were Patterns— made, broken and shaped.

Patterns continue and so did ours. September of 1966 saw a new sophomore class— typically starryeyed, typically silly, typically sophomores. Yet we were special, because we were us, a year older, a shade blonder, a bit wiser, and ready to giggle M ount Sr. Ursula upside-down by June. And giggle we did— in religion, in Latin II, in geometry, in world history, and eveyx in speech! “W hat was th a t you saidi’ A new male teacher.? I don’t believe it!” But believe it we did as we learned how to rejuvenate flat “ a’s”, work up good “o” sounds and develop th at eye con­ tact. The eye exercise proved to be very useful as we searched everywhere for a date for the Sophomore Tea. Towards the end of October we really got worried when we realized th at the “ Regents exam is only one hundred and sixty hours away.” Before long Ivanhoe and David Copperfield had become such good friends th a t we could hardly tell them, apart!

But we were reassured when, at our first honors assembly of the year. M other Cornelius read out the sophomores’ names, and the sophomores’ names, and the sophomores’ names. . . .

Of course, there were the more carefree moments, such as Mission Day, as we carried on in the usual manner of he-who-must-win; Ring Day, with its hysteria and chaos, when we watched our sisters receive their rings and dreamed of our Ring D ay— how many thousands of days away.? Or the M.S.U. Thanksgiving H o o te n a n n y -M ix er, which tradition has carried on right up to the present day. In fact, some of us are still wondering what carefree moment it was which resulted in very many detentions on a certain day in the cafeteria. Well, girls, ours is not to question So the fall passed, quickly and happily, and there we were, in our second Christmas season at Mount.

Spirits rose and with them the curtains on our first real play. Picture yourself, a star and an angel whom no one has ever really satisfactorily placed, and the stumbling Dutch girl with size forty-two wooden shoes! The sophomores had blossomed anew— as flowers of the theatre.

Time marched on, sweeping us up in the rush, and we patterned our footsteps on those before us.

There we were on those bleak, J a n u ary mornings and

y .e a f bleaker afternoons, waiting for room assignments. It was exam time again. “ All right now, to room 103, fourteen Spanish II, six French I, and nine English IV, with M other So and So. Was th a t thirteen Eng­ lish II or nine French IV.? No, it was six Spanish I and five Finglish III; or was it seven French II and nine English I; or maybe it was . . . ” and so on.

If anyone mentioned double bar, the immediate re­ sponse was check-check!

But we made it, and after a stimulating retreat, and m any tears at dim Sophomore Tea prospects, we began the second half of our Patterns ’66.

February came upon us too quickly and with it the realization th a t there were only twelve days until T H E Sophomore Tea. Girls interchanged every avail­ able male in the family, from older brothers to twiceremoved cousins. At four o’clock the sophomores proceeded up the hill with boys never before, or for th a t matter, never since seen! “ Moonlight in Ver­ m ont” was slowly dimmed, and at eight o’clock the bedazzled sophomores set out to overcrowded parties.

Our Sophomore Tea was over— never to be re-lived, and a new question arose. “W ho am I going to invite to my Junior Dance.?”

In April the big event was, of course. Class Day in which we, the Cowboys, were gloriously victorious over the freshman Indians. It goes without saying th a t we witnessed numerous fire drills (especially during lunch) and an occasional bomb scare during which certain sophs paraded out in their red gymsuits behind the always-exercising Mrs. Twoomey.

The ankle-deep snow didn’t help m atters along. It was decided th at we had too m any rough basketball players with not nearly enough poise, so the everready sophomores learned the do’s and don’t ’s of dancing, with a chance to perform before the gym class.

M ay arrived and brought the dainty, wrinkle-free summer uniforms out of moth balls, and with June came the butterflies th a t always accompany end term exams and in particular— Regents.

W ith exams successfully completed the class of ’68 looked -forward to carefree summer days, impeded only by our summer reading list, and the expecta­ tions of becoming upper classmen. And so we com­ pleted one half of the patterns our four years at M ount would weave.

T h e Class of ’68 entered its third year in Septem­ ber 1966, with a feeling of disbelief. W ho would have thought th a t we could make it.? After all, everyone knew w hat diabolical influences we were; not to mention th a t gangrene of the eye is gangrene of the soul.

We walked into our new classes cold to meet our new teachers. For some of us there was a short-lived lack of warmth. You see, the heatboxes kept us warm. ( It seemed to us th a t we were forgiven for our shocking betrayals.)

We plunged ahead into the unknown. Little did we know w hat was m store for us. T h e year to come would be a time for searching— not so much for self-identity, but for more earthy, tangible things.

We hunted for our desks, at times as often as three times a day; and we sought lost contact lenses in the rainy streets of the Bronx. Of course, there were the safaris for misplaced parts of the uniform. Those hunts, for some reason, were carried on with a bit less energy. When our minds were on a somewhat higher plane, we did search for the answers in M ath 11. We strove on confidently, ignorantly, as our teachers implanted in us the concept th a t we could catch on, if not today, maybe tomorrow, and if not tomorrow then m aybe the next day. Still others of us stepped into a world of exciting, vibrant personali­ ties such as Hans Kung and John Courtney M urray.

Incidentally, if the room got hot, we removed it.

Some of us learned a lot from our homeroom teachers such as w hat a Hummel is and w hat it is like to live in holy terror because you have broken a plant.

One phase of junior year was anything but unfamiliar to us. W e had been accustomed to the eventuality of the college boards since freshman year. By snappy drills, and after-school drills in review classes we had been adequately prepared; but as any honest junior will tell you, hearing about them is one thing and taking them is quite another. Everyone knows th a t the third year is the most difficult academically.

Therefore, our teachers demanded our strict attention at all times. “ All eyes up here” was an echo from English class.

Eor the Class of 1968, junior year also turned out to be a novelty in the area of physical education.

No longer would we have a full period of calisthenics with our marine drill sargeant disguised as a mildmannered gym teacher. We figured on a routine of fun and games for a change. We got a change all right, and we got our fun and games, too. There were the broadjumps, those widespread punishments for felons in Soviet Russia, and Olympic workouts.

In our extra-curricular activities, the junior Ring D ay play took the lead. Amidst our wonderful props, such as a torn coat and a salad bowl, the junior members of the Dramatic Society put on a striking performance. The musical score was especially me­ morable. We had never realized the tremendous ta ­ lent th a t was contained in our class.

I'here was, of course, the Junior Dance-blind-dategetting-and-losmg syndrome. You see, we were so culturally and intellectually absorbed with ballet, opera and chamber music, not to mention academic problems, th at the dance simply crept up on us.

After th a t whirlwind, the Class of 1968 forged ahead into its annual slump. We were the only class th a t forged ahead into about everything; and usually our gung-ho attitude was the intangible something th a t got us through our trials and tribulations. The one exciting thing th at occurred during the hiberna­ tion period between J a n u ary exams and the June ulcer-go-round was the notoriety M ount achieved when she made the headlines of one of the world’s intellectually impoverished newspapers. But not even the Prepsters, whose opinion we held so dearly, could wake us from our daydreams for a proper retort.

A little while after, teachers began once more to terrorize us by mentioning th a t dread word in class.

Only this time there was for the juniors an added significance, because if you “ didn’t catch on today or tomorrow” you knew very well th a t you’d have to catch up in summer school.

Well, a lot of us passed and some of us didn’t quite, but almost all of us came through the wringer only a little worse for wear, and praising a certain biology teacher as the “ Miracle W orker.” During the M a th 11 Regents she had entered bringing glad tidings. T he Class of 1968 had something to look forward to, even through the tears, because th at yellow piece of paper had the plans for our trip to Expo!
