Discovery, too, when someone smiles and you know the warmth that's there. Is even better because it's shared and then two know the feeling That discovery is more than great events. Is best because it's more.

RING DAY ADDRESS The cla ss of 1966 will soon become history. And however else history will think of you, it will surely remember you as the class “ that’s got the spirit, the spirit of Mount.” And what exactly is this “ spirit of Mount” ? It is one of joy, surely, but this is only a part of a deeper, fuller meaning. This hidden meaning lies within the symbolism of your ring. The shape of your ring, a circle, signifies completion and an unending union of parts. Thus, “ the spirit of Mount” is one of unity. Your ring is a reminder today, that each girl in the c la ss of 1966 belongs with and works with the others. Working in harmony, you form an unending union. The red stone, now reflecting your joy, has a deep meaning also. As you know, red is the color used by the Church to symbolize the blood of m artyrs. The m artyrs were people of strong faith, who suffered greatly, yet willingly for it. You too, are called to be women of faith. By bestowing upon you this ring. Mount Saint Ursula has expressed its faith in you; by accepting it, you have professed your faith in Mount. And what about the year 1966 engraved on your ring? To a Mountie, it means the year in which you began a new life. It signifies your “ spirit of courage.” You are ready to meet the world, to experience the world, to challenge the world. A ring, throughout the many phases of life has been a symbol of commitment. For a newly-elevated bishop, the ring is a symbol of his commitment to his role as shep herd in God’s Church. For a Christian man and woman, joined in the sacred union of Matrimony, the ring is a pledge of love, a sign of the commitment of their lives to each other. The ring worn by each of our Ursuline mothers, is a symbol of her commitment to Christ and a sign of her pledge to Him. For you too, your ring is a symbol of com mitment. You have been called to be witnesses to Christ, mediators between Him and the world. The following words are taken from the prayer for the blessing of the rings at the Wedding Ceremony. They clearly define the significance of all rings. “ B le ss, O Lord, these rings that we bless in your name, so that they who wear them may keep faith with each other in unbroken loyalty, and ever remain at peace with you, obedient to your will . . . ” This is our prayer for you, dear seniors: May God bless your rings with hap piness and su ccess. May you keep faith with each other and to Mount. May you do God’s will by fulfilling your commitment. Let your ring be a symbol of your spirit, your spirit of joy, of unity, of loyalty, of courage, and of your great commitment to Christ. This, dear seniors, is the “ spirit of the class of 1966,” “ the spirit of Mount.” Carol Rehm

CLASS HISTORY DISCOVERY ’62 Four long Septembers ago, a unique class began to discover. On a very rainy September 5, our junior sisters welcomed us--and neither rain nor stormy weather could keep the class of ’66. . . . The following Monday, our principal, Mother Mary Edward, greeted us, as we looked around for the rest of the school. It was nowhere to be seen. And so, uniquely, we distinguished ourselves in the fields of math, science, language, and the very fine arts, A group of plays in honor of Mother Mary Edward’s feast day marked our en trance into the world of the theater. Red balloon day followed soon after, as did Group B ’s pink bows, and the mysterious cow. The coming of Christm as saw a unique band of musicians (alias Group A). Our basketball teams were great--w e soundly defeated two grammar schools. With the new year, January exams fell hard and heavy upon us; but we recovered, and our renewed spirit initiated some constructive undertakings — the Irish program for St. Patrick’s Day, and a part in the presentation cf "G en esis.” E a ster’s ingredients were unique too--green, white and gold, with lots of spirit. But on Class Day, soon after, our defeat at the hands of the sophomores dampened this spirit somewhat. May saw our trips to Beacon, Moriches, and Stratford, and a mad review for June exams as freshman year brought us to an end of a beginning. DISCOVERY ’63 Fall of ’63, the class of ’66 returned to Mount as sophomores--with asevere case of sophomoritis, with a new sense of belonging, and with a new principal. Long before our typically sophomore spirits had been quenched. Mission Day was upon us, and in the true apostolic spirit, we descended upon the neighborhood sto res. Thanksgiving seemed to come late that year, perhaps because we were all numbed by the death of John F. Kennedy—who can forget the little boy’s salute? Unfortunately, January exams were early, but soon after they had been overcome, we greeted, with sophomore enthusiasm, the Beatles! Later that year saw an Evening in P aris, with elaborate Arc de Triumphe—that just would not go up. And on Class Day, the cowboys were stunned by their defeat. (They said we’d win in sophomore year.) That spring we saw the ground broken for our new chapel. Rye Beach--Fordham ’s boat ride, the World’s F a ir in all its rainy glory, and inevitably, June exams. Aside from Latin II, Geometry, and World History, we ended our second year at Mount with happp realization that we had reached a midpoint, and were now upper classm en. DISCOVERY ’64 We looked back to the days when we had our own junior siste rs and realized that they had gone. We would now take their place as caretakers of the freshman class. The first chance we got to show our good intentions was the junior-freshman picnic, a gala affair, which was held on a school day in the duration of our combined lunch periods. It was a big success despite the fact that all small juniors got big freshmen and all the big juniors got bigger freshmen! In accordance with the tradition of Mount St. Ursula, it poured rain on Mission Day, and sink or swim, almost everyone

made it to the Junior Dance regardless of the downpour which occurred that night. In February, because of a bomb sca re , 800 happy girls singled-filed out of classes to shiver in the snow. Again, true to form , it poured for our trip to M oriches, which much to the surprise of the juniors was cancelled--and Stratford was foggy that year too. Junior year was the year when there was “ a. whole lot of a’ feudin’ and a’ fightin’” going on. Patches were flying when the Jasp ers met the McCoys in the gym for a show down. The Jasp ers were skillful little “ c r itte r s ” , determined to beat their foes with out any shoes, but the McCoys won the battle by the skin of their teeth. The year had finally come. After two years of confinement we were finally allowed to expose our suppressed talents in the form of the “ big play” . Four juniors actually had speaking parts in “ Arsenic and Old L a c e ,” and those who did not receive choice roles were not discouraged. They displayed their talents by taking the parts of dead bodies. They entered right into the spirit of the role, too! We have many memories of junior year such as: our attempt to win the “ Principal of the Y ear” Contest, the pious (?) retreat made by Junior Sodality, a morning-long march in H arris Field. One of our last mem ories is having been measured for our rings. It was almost June, and with just a summer between junior and senior years, we looked forward to our last year at Mount. DISCOVERY ‘65 Senior y ear--th e beginning of the end. In September we were full of expectation— of our rings, closed retreat, another C lass Day, graduation. By the first week in October we had noticed the absence of a homeroom, and sophomores in the “ senior” corridor. Then came October 20--one day till Ring Day! We oiled our skates and waited. Early the next morning we started out, and “ B less us a ll,” nobody was killed. At the end of that long last hill, the underclassmen had assembled to greet us, and we realized, perhaps with a tinge of regret, that this would be the last time. But, life must go on, and we eagerly entered the auditorium where we would receive our rings. Really sen iors—at long last. Our senior days were filled with broadening experiences--Pope Paul in the firs t Pontifical visit to the United States, the dedication of OUR new chapel, Tuesday M asses in it, the founding of the Serviam Chapter of the National Honor Society, an unforgettable blackout. College Boards, our form al Christm as dance... Senior year, the beginning of the end—but as the days go by, we realize that they are ours--ou r last as the senior class of Mount St. Ursula—the C lass of ’66. The beginning of the end?
