RING DAY ADDRESS There comes a time in everyone’s life when it is necessary to step back and to study what has gone before, what is here now, and what is to come. Today, Seniors, you have reached a new and higher plateau in your student ca reers. Stop, then, and look at the blessings of yesterday, the happiness of today, and the hopefulness of tomorrow. From your firs t days at Mount St. Ursula, you have been aware of a spirit of love uniting all. Today you are even more aware of that spirit of love because its symbol, the ring, will soon be yours. Youarebeinggiventhe sign offidelity,the sign which a c companies the pledge of matrimony, the pledge of religious profession, the pledge at a bishop’s consecration. In the parable of the Prodigal Son, the father, whose love for his son had never died, called for a ring to be put on his finger. In this instance the ring was a symbol of belonging to a family, one like our family here at Mount. The gold in your rings symbolizes richness of ch aracter; The red stone symbolizes courage. The inscriptions on your rings, the school seal, the school initials, and the Miraculous Medal are all visible reminders of the standards you have made your own. This spirit of love, however, is not meant to die when your days at Mount have ended. Your rings will symbolize this spirit wherever you go, whatever you do. They will serve as constant reminders of the love and the fidelity you have pledged. Your school rings may some day be replaced by other rings, but the spirit will always be with you. All over our city, our state, our country, all over the world, women have worn the Mount ring. As you follow them, may blessings, happiness, hopefulness, love, unity, and fidelity be with you. Look at your rings often; think of us. Think of the spirit that unites us all, that unites, especially today, the Class of 1965. Barbara Regan ’66
