The earliest scene of I rsuline labors in New York City belongs to lands rich in traditions of America’s brave beginnings.

Morrisania, today, is Bronx County, New York City. The first white settler, Jonas Broncks, of Hoorn, Holland, in July, 1639, wrote Pieter \ an Alst, “The Invisible H and of the Almighty F ath er surely guided us to this beautiful country, a land covered with virgin forest and u n ­ limited opportunities. It is a veritable paradise and needs but the industrious hand of man to make it the most beautiful region in all the world.” The land exchanged hands in the course of the years until finally on May 8, 1697, it came into the posses­ sion of Lewis Morris, who became First Lord of Morrisania by patent of His Majesty, King William HI. T h e name of Morris illuminates the annals of successful colonial warfare and litigation, of lionorahle statesmanship and wise judiciary.

-Mor­ risania was a battleground of the American Revolu­ tion. W hen Congress was in session in 1790, it r e ­ ceived a petition, headed by the Honorable Gouverneur Morris, which advocated that the properties be chosen as the site of the New National Capital, be­ cause, “ the land is in well-drained condition, free from swamps, and enjoys proximity to the great industrial and political metropolis. New York.”

In response to the reiterated petitions of the Rev­ erend F. Metzel, P.R., and with the episcopal sanc­ tion of T h eir Excellencies in St. Louis and New York, the St. Louis Ursulines dispatched three re ­ ligious, in 1854, to view the locality and to consult with the authorities of the Archdiocese. Reverend M other M. Magdalen Stehlin, former Prioress of Oldenburg, Austria, and now of St. Louis, was ac­ companied by Sisters M arianne Von Pan and Mary -\ugustine Schragl.

On May 15, 1854, Reverend M other Magdalen laid the foundation in .Morrisania.

Eight nuns arrived in the late summer, ready for the courageous sacrifices th at would bring harvest in G od’s own time.

The trials and privations read into the history of foundations generally, were the lot of the pioneersThe n u n s’ capital was their burning desire to labor for the greater glory of God by their own perfection an d by the education of young girls. Their labors with the children were had in lessons of solid vir­ tue and in such studies as could be amplified under the careful direction of the Jesuits of Fordham, who preceded them by only fourteen years. Reverend Pastor -Metzel spent himself seeking ways and means for the erection of a p erm anent convent. Mr. H e n ­ ning gave our nuns hospitality in the bosom of his

family until May of 1855. IIis charity was blessed, we believe, in the Ursuline vocation of his daughter, and the Redemptionist vocation of his son.

The site finally selected for the .Academy by His Excellency, Archbishop John Hughes, was bordered by sweet-smelling trees and shrubs an d commanded a panoramic view of the Sound. The properties were extensive with orchards, vineyards, and farms. A drive, bordered by stately oaks, traced the way to the building which was four stories high with fulllength balconies. On either side of the long cor­ ridors, the cells were located. The first floor con­ tained the Chapel, parlors, nuns’ refectory, an d Su­ perior’s office; the second, the classrooms, and the third, the students’ quarters. -A wing was added as the years attracted a larger registration.

In 1862, Right Reverend William Starr, Vicar Gen­ eral, appointed Reverend Mother M. Dominick Weiss, Prioress.

As the parent-community of .St. Louis owed its origins to three great Austrian nuns, so, too. the community of Bedford P a rk is horn to a heritage of saintly heroism in her three foundresses. -As to the convent at Odenburg, about thirty-seven miles from Vienna, had the Redemptorist Brother, Sebas­ tian Stehlin in 1846, directed the Vicar General of ■St. Louis, Reverend Joseph Melcher, representing His Grace The Most Reverend Peter Richard Kenrick, so, too, did Reverend Mother Alagdalen Stehlin attract to the missionary life in the “New W orld” a trinity of educators from the .Schools of Higher Learning in Europe.

Reverend Mother M. Dom­ inick was formed in the classic culture of the Lrsuline schools in Landshut; Mother M. de Sales Tredow (a convert from L utheranism ), at the Court of Berlin where her father held his diplomatic post, and later, in the household of Princess Clementine of Saxe-Coburg-Goetha in V ienna; Mother M. Rose Helff, a lawyer’s daughter, at Gratz, where her gifts of art, music, and languages were cultivated. -Aug­ ust second of 1854 united these kindred .souls in the holy ceremonies of the religious profession of Rev­ erend Mother Af. Dominick and of the religious clothing of Mothers M. de Sales and Rose. In later years. Mother M. de Sales with the community “ were honored by the presence of Dom Augusta Leopoldo, Duke of Saxe-Cohurg-Goetha, accompanied,” so the monastery chronicle relates, “ by Senior Mario de Mendonca, son of the Consul-General of Brazil.”

For forty-three years. Reverend Mother M. Dom­ inick guided the New York lYsulines. U nder her inspiration, the works of education prospered in the

The husiness fronlier of ihe city, invading and ahsorhing. forced the nuns eventually to leave their cherished home. The present ten acres in Bedford Bark were jnirehased, and on Fehruary 11. 1890, ground was Inoken for the new academy. On .April 21, 1892. the ceremony of the hlessing of the prem ­ ises. with all the solemn ritual of Holy Mother (ihurch, was lield hy Mis Excellency, Michael .Augus­ tine Corrigan, .Archhishoj) of New York. .A large concourse of per.sons attended while the hierarchy, the religious and the students formed in procession.

Two hundred resident students and seventy nuns were present at the official opening of the new -Academy on May 31, 1892.

The first cycle in our New York labors was concluded. Beginnings were made in dire poverty sweetened hy great chaiities. O ur nuns received the episcopal hlessing on their European voyages to raise funds. Convents and Courts were entered and not in vain. F^rom St. Mary M ajor has come the famous Bamhino; from the hands of the great F ather (ieneral of the .lesuits, the Very Reverend Jean Roothan. was received the wax statue of St. Aloysius, which formally reposed in the saint’s room, since become a shrine. .St. .Madeline Sophie Barat, fo und ­ ress of the Aladames of the .Sacred Heart, had cordial exchange with Mother M. de Sales. On the other hand, the nuns offered the prayer of suffering in the hunger, privation, and cold as described in the story of their days at Decatur, Illinois; “The house exteriorly pleasing, had only two stories in a dozen rooms. In wdnter, the walls ran with w ater; our furniture and clothes were always damp. The refectory had no fire; the food was freezing on our plates.”

The central organization of the Roman Union, in which Bedford Bark holds mem bership since 1900,

was long anticijiated here. The nuns were dispatched to other communities as needed, to California, Delawa re, Maine, .Maryland, .Montana, New jersey. N o rth ­ ern New York, Rhode Island; to Manliattan, to Mount Vernon, to several new communities in the Bronx; to Alaska; and to British Cuiana. In 1872, the Ursidines were invited to the parish of St. Jerom e’s hy its pastor, the Reverend John Hughes: in 1907, to O ur Lady of Mercy liy the Reverend William .1. B. Daly; in 1908, to St. Mary’s hy the Reverend John J. C arr; in 1914, to .St. Bhilip N eri’s hy the Right Revereml Daniel F. X. B urke; in 1927, to St. Joseph’s in Bound Brook, New Jersey, at the request of His Excellency, Thom as Joseph W’alsh.

Arehhishop of Newark. The .Academy of St. Jero m e’s was opened in 1882 and continued its fine work until 1927. The Academy of Mount .St. Ursula ahsorhed the [Jrsiiline schools in Belham and Tiehout Avenue.

T he student body of Mount St. Ursula was to he more comfortably accommodated in St. A ngela’s Hall which the Right Reverend John J. Dunn, AuxiliaryBishop of New York, dedicated on Septem ber 17.

1922. The drive for funds, culm inating in phenomenal success, was ably directed from within by Reverend Mother M. Fidelis, admirably supported by His Excellency, Joseph Rummel, the present Archbishop of New Orleans and the Right Reverend Daniel F. X. Burke. The Mount St. Ursula League, then organ­ ized, still continues its excellent work in a large active organization.

The riches of Cod are unsearchable and His creative fruitfulness unique; so too, is His fatherlycare beyond power to conceive. The realities of peace, joy and hajipiness, abundance and fertility are ours, for God is a God of goodness. “The L ord’s portion is His people. He led him about, and taught him ; and he kept him as the apple of his eye. As the eagle enticing her young to fly and hovering over them. He spread His wings; and hath taken him and carried him on his shoulders. He set him upon high land: that he might eat the fruits of the field, that he might eat much honey out of the rock, and oil out of the hardest stone . . . and might drink the purest blood of the grape.” (Deut., XXXII, 9, 14.1 God’s Providence is mindful of even the little cares of our nuns and though He bad asked great sacrifices and new strivings, they were ready by long fidelity to the little things of God. and “exhibited themselves as ministers of God; . . . needy, yet enriching m any; as having nothing, yet possessing all things.” (II Cor. vi 4, 9, 10.)

Jubilee Year

^Le On April 17, at Mount St. Ursula, the solemn triduuin of thanksgiving opened, commemorating fifty years of existence at Bedford Park. The I'rsuline N uns in 1855 were first established on Gouverneur Morris’ properties, the site originally set apart as the new capital of the United .States in 1790. The rapidly growing Bronx business section had advanced upon the cloistral sequestration of the Ursuline prop­ erties, thus making the lands unsuitable for the purposes of a residential school. On February 11, 1890. ground was broken for the new academy at Bedford Park. On .April 24, 1892, the chapel and school were solemnly blessed by Ills Excellency Michael .Augustine Corrigan. The Academy then housed two h undred resident students and was for­ mally opened on May 31, 1892 with the blessing of His Excellency.

Inaugurating the Golden Jubilee, the Solemn Mass of St. .Angela Merici, Foundress of the Ursulines in 1.535, was offered by the Reverend Francis A. Camp­ bell, LL.D., Reverend Francis .A. Cagnina, Deacon, Reverend Eugene A. IMurtha, Subdeacon, Reverend William Hanley, Master of Ceremonies, Deacons of Honor before the throne of His Excellency were the Right Reverend Michael A. Reilly, V. F., and Right Reverend Francis W. Walsh, President of the College of New Rochelle. Master of Ceremonies before the throne was Very Reverend John J. Casey. The pages at the throne were Masters William Mulderig and M atthew Cavanaugh. The sermon was preached by the Right Reverend William A. Scully, Secretary of Education of the Archdiocese of New York who spoke eloquently on the text “They who instruct others unto justice shall shine as the stars for all eternity.”

The paternal benediction of His Excellency was consoling and is here transcribed in full: ADDRESS O F HIS EXCELLENCY, F R A N C IS J. S P E L L M A N , A R C H B IS H O P of N EW YORK “ I am sure th at we all welcome this spiritual gather­ ing occasioned by this observance of the Golden Jubilee of the blessing of this Institution by A rch ­ bishop Corrigan. 1 had occasion recently to read the interesting history of the foundation of the Ursulines in New York and also the Annals of the Institute regarding the foundation of this .Academy.

There is little that I can add. “ .Monsignor Scully has given us a vivid picture of the trials, the sacrifices and the crosses incident to the foundation and has also given us an admirable and concise story of the purpose and the achievement of Catholic education. I have only to add a few

“This .Academy (while it is only the second visit to it in my life) has been a landm ark in my memory. It was always before us in view during the days that I was a student at Fordham. The ball on the tower has for me a familiar and nostalgic ring, as it brings to my memory not only what I have heard of the work done for Catholic education by the Ursuline Sisters hut also the thoughts of my early years with the Jesuit Fathers, and my com­ panions of those student days many of whom are still my closest friends. Today is a day of joy and satisfaction for the Ursuline Sisters and all those who have been privileged to have studied under their influence and under their direction. “ In these days when we hear so much of priorities, it is interesting to recall that always in the history of the Catholic Church and the history of Catholic education, the priorities have always been the same,— spiritual priorities. I am sure that come what may, those priorities will still be in the Catholic system of education predominant, and the more predominant they become in the outward world, the better will be our civilization and its safety. “ 1 trust th at the example of the Ursuline Sisters and their Institutes will continue to expand as well as the other Congregations and Communities of Relig­ ious for the welfare of religion and for the welfare and salvation of all that is best that we know for our civilization. Certainly there is great need for priorities in the spiritual realm. At the present time, for example in our Archdiocese of New A’ork. there is such a shortage in one department of our spiritual priorities that various religious communities could he expanded for the urgent and pressing needs of our .Archdiocese thus contributing to the .Archdiocese and to the Church, to .America and to our Country, by the addition of at least twelve hundred sisters.

The same shortage exists in vocations to the priest­ hood, because with the demands for chaplains for our arm ed forces (four of whom have already paid the supreme sacrifice of their lives i, the .Archdiocese of New York could easily make use of two hundred more priests. “ I make this observance because in the consideration of spiritual priorities, we must always hear in mind that we must devote ourselves to the service of God through example, edification and inspiration to others, so that others may also contribute with their lives in a direct and in a complete manner and in the highest manner in the service of God.

On tliis Fiftielli Anniversary of the foundation of lids Academy as our thoughts go hack in retrospect willi Monsignor Scully as he told us of the trials of the foundation and as we see in lliought the heroic sacrilicial lives of those who have gone before us, we are inspired with great ardor and great zeal and greater faith and greater joy lo consecrate ourselves anew and to carry always onr share of the burden during the period of lime th at God leaves this burden on our shoulders: “Thou shall instruct many unto justice and thou shalt shine as stars for all eternity,” AVc are gathered here today lo celebrate the Golden ,Iuhilee of the Academy of Mount St. Ursula. Fifty years ago this Ajiril, .Archhisliop Corrigan solemnly blessed this Institution and dedicated its resources both spiritual and material to Christian education.

The recording .Angel alone has compiled the com­ plete record of service and sacrifice rendered by the I'rsuline N uns in fulfilment of their high purpose.

The hours of study, preparation, instruction, edifying example, silence, prayer and self-denial have all been recorded in the Book of Life, hut in addition they have found their fruition on earth in the exemplary Catholic lives of the young women who have attended this school of Christian virtue during the past fifty years.

We assemble here today to render thanks to Al­ mighty God. our Father, for the blessings of half a century; to honor the memory of those illustrious women who laid the foundation of this Academy; to Iiray for the souls of the departed ones who labored and studied within these sacred walls; and lastly, to beseech our Heavenly F ath er to continue to pro­ tect and bless the labors of all tho,se associated with this work. It might he well for us on an occasion such as this to recall to our minds, the purpose that prompted those who founded this institution. For any stale such as this, there are many similar insti­ tutions where thousands of hoys and girls are given the cultural advantages of a secular education. The taxpayers contribute one hundred fifty million a year for educational facilities, and yet our Catholic schools and academies are existing because Catholic parents are convinced that religion is the heart of true education. They are consequently willing to make every sacrifice to enable their children to secure not only a complete knowledge of the arts anti sciences, hut in addition to give them a fun da­

mental knowledge td (»oil and the love of .Icsiis Christ, the .‘saviour of the world. ft is not diflicult for us then as Catliolics to u n d er­ stand an education without religion is incom{)lete, and, therefore, fails of its true pui'iiose. Perhaps this is best illustrated by the story of Daniel stand­ ing before the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar.

The King had been di.sturhed by a dream which could not he underslooil nor interpreted. He sent for Daniel to whom God revealed its meaning.

“Thou, 0 King sawest, and behold there was as it were a great statue: this statue, which was great and high, tall of stature. . . The head of this statue was of fine gold, hut the breast and arms of silver, and the belly and the thighs of brass: And the legs of iron, the feet part of iron and part of clay. . . . Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of a sum m er’s thrashing floor, and they were carried away by the wind.”

To all of us who have been nurtured under Catholic traditions, the modern world presents grave contra­ dictions. Our civilization is supposed to he religious in origin an d content. Yet we are rudely awakened from our complacency when we realize th at for the past one hundred and fifty years, irreligion has been on the march of lime and is increasing. The vices of the forces of the protestant revolt have spent themselves. T he sceptic in the realm of religion rejects divine authority; materialism proclaims that one religion is as good as another. T he goddess of the French revolution has been transferred to our shores— liberalism, materialism and scepticism are the keystones of our modern civilization.

God and the Eternal Laws are considered out­ moded and works of the Middle Ages. The hope of America is only to he found in her spiritual ideals.

These ideals cannot survive without religion. Yet education in America today ignores the traditional religious teaching of our western civilization. We are now attempting to preserve democracy by edu­ cation. Yet half of the youth of our country have been reared without a knowledge of God and His divine law. W hat future can we predict for a na­ tion when so large a proportion of its future citi­ zens have built their lives purely on selfish and m a­ terialistic foundations? W h a t regard will this non­ religious population of our citizenry have for the so-called “ God given rights,” proclaimed so clearly by our forefathers in the Declaration of Independence.

Democracy can survive only if America keeps her citizens’ souls white. She can keep her souls white only if people in this country acknowledge God as their creator and fulfill Flis divine law. It is God. and God alone who endowed all men with inalienable rights. We who love America are deeply concerned lest for victory abroad we succumb to the false

philosophy which would destroy the very founda­ tions of true liberty at home.

“Religion is the bulw ark of democracy. Destroy religion and democracy will perish. The Christian school presents an educational program th at has stood the test of the ages. After the example of Christ, the C hurch proclaim s ‘Seek you first the Kingdom of God, and all things shall he added thereunto.’ She tells us the soul of man is of prime im portance; th at the future life in the Kingdom of God is to he p referred to earthly treasures. She tells us to be truly wise and see the things of time in the scales of eternity. She insists that our actions con­ form to the pattern of law and order established by the Divine Legislator; th at we practice purity, humility, obedience, patience— tbe bright jewels that must shine forth in the lives of those who follow the Master. How easy then it is for the true Ghristian to be a true patriot. He finds tbe law of God in the law of the land. He recognizes his obliga­ tions to serve in the defense of his country and is ready to lay down his life if necessary to preserve those gifts of liberty and freedom bestowed by God on this fair land. “ W hat a glorious record of patriotism was written by our Catholic boys and chaplains in the last war.

In the Providence of God, the devotion of our men an d priests in the present conflict will add another glorious chapter to the traditions of a truly devoted Catholic people. The aim of the Church of Christ is to teach, to teach men the way of salvation, in times of w ar and peace, in the city and in the country, in the east, the north, the south, the west.

She sends forth her priests and religious teachers to point out the way to eternal life. Sheltered under this divine command are the thousands of men and women who have dedicated their lives to God’s serv­ ice. To you my dear religious have been given the most sacred and im portant comm and; to you has been entrusted the spiritual and intellectual training of the Catholic mothers of a new generation; to you has been given the responsibility of leading other chosen souls to the altar of God, willing workers in the Divine V ineyard; to you has been given the task of forming souls to the image of Christ, and you who instruct many to justice, shall shine as stars for all eternity.

“In the presence of our most beloved Archbishop, you rededicate today your lives to the service of God through the service of the young. May the indom­ itable spirit of your predecessors through their piety, self-sacrifice and devotion to God, he the constant inspiration of your lives. May the trials and diffi­ culties of your chosen profession he devotired by the flames of your love for your Divine .Saviour for He has selected you as His .Spouse. May the rewards of your service to God he as hountiful in heaven as

On April 18, the five hundred students of the Academy held their celebration. Missa Cantata was offered by the Right Reverend William R. Kelly, Archdiocesaan S uperintendent of Schools. Reverend Cornelius Drew delivered the sermon in which he examined the great benefits of the Ursuline tradition of education in securing an American and Catholic philosophy individualized by that “superior culture of the intelligence, discipline of the will, an d training of the h e a rt” for four hundred years associated with the Teaching Idea of St. .Angela Merici.

On April 19 llie Alumnae Convocalinn solemnized the last day of the jni)ilee. Reverend Joseph L. Melody offered Holy Mass. Reverend J. Harding Fisher, S. J., Rector of Fordliain University preached on ihe angelic holiness of religious teachers whose whole life is hemmed in hy prayer, penance and sacrifice that they might dispense the treasures of

Chrislian educalion. Delegates from class 1882 to the i)resent time were served a huffet luncheon. A I)rogram delicately attuned lo reminiscences and Irilmtes was ojiened under the direction of Mrs. Regina Auspitzer, .Mrs. .Sarah Donovan and Mrs. G ertrude I^azzari, all past presidents of the Alumnae Association. Devout trihute was paid to the deceased religious and alum nae in recollection of their many fine virtues. A roll-call of religious alum nae was most heartily apitlauded. I^leasurahle associations were relived in excerpts of ancient minutes and progress of events gone hy. Margaret T. Wilson, ’33, M. A., delivered a scholarly discourse on the virtues of Ursuline heritage and environment. “An Ursuline girl is always at home whether with those of fifty years past or of today; whether from lands afar or near. The Order, devoted exclusively to education, and hy reason of its central organization enhanced moreover, by its sole object to elevate the Christian idea of family life through the children, guarantees a uniformity easily identifiable, a culture deeply rooted in the experience of life.” A t the close of her addre.ss. Miss Wilson asked her hearers to pause in recollection ere she read her “T rib u te” in verse. Mrs. Simon T. Maloney, president of the Alumnae Association, then presented Reverend Mother Mercedes, O. S. U. with resolutions admirably and artistically inscribed. Reunions and a tour of Alma Mater marked the interim until the Convocation in St. A ngela’s Hall at three o’clock. A formal pro­ cession of Alumnae Officers, guests, faculty and officials of the Academy opened the Convocation, presided over hy the Reverend John C. Mulcahy, Ph. D. who welcomed all with the joy of the jubilee.

Greetings were offered hy Reverend Mother Mercedes and Mother Mary Carmel, Principal. Commendation was given to Anna Herold, of Class 1882. The Misses Ursula Barrett, Valerie Gihney, with brilliant arias, and Alice Alurphy and Virginia Mulligan with wellknown airs entertained. Mrs. Rosemary W iltm ar was at the piano. Sister St. Pierre read her Com­ memoration Ode. Mother M. Loyola’s Victory Song and Serviam were introduced hy Margery Ann H unter with our nun-composer, accompanist. The strength of the Ursuline shield is vibrantly stirring in these school songs. Mother M. Assumpta told the story of the foundation in 18.53 until fifty years ago and quite fittingly rendered at the close of the recital Brahe’s Bless This House. The agenda dis­ cussing the high points of the new chapte r organiza­ tion and weekly courses was propounded hy the Moderator. The returned questionnaires are ample testimony of the cordial cooperation and receptiveness of the members in the matter of the modifications.

W e are met in days when the beautiful virtue of patriotism is submerged in bewilderment; when we are being compelled to the greater realization of the steadying inlluence of our faith that keeps us providentially in the shelter of the everlasting A rms; w h e n the oneness for which Christ prayed is being displaced by a oneness bent on chaos and destruction. .Away then with all smugness and complacency! .Away with the apathy of a coma-like existence that would threaten the very vitality of our Catholic philosophy that nourishes as it supports the principles of American Democracy.

In order that we may be more completely dedicated — as one— to this great apostolate, on this our fiftieth anniversary, we propose the following agenda for tentative operation, at least, for the duration. This will be a period, perchance, of trial and error, but it is our earnest prayer th at the debit of theory will be richly outweighed by the credit of experience.

For immediate participation, therefore, we are opening to you mem bership in activities of your choice as can be checked upon the questionnaires now in your hands. The American W omen’s Volunteer Serv­ ices will establish a unit among you and open to you their diverse courses that offei a rich field for the dissemination of Catholic ideals and practice.

A religious society dedicated to the preparation of altar linens and vestments lor the missions, now beat to the ground by the invader, is beautiful with spirit­ ual potentialities. .A religious study-club will give us mental poise when the ugly head of cynical sneer belittles the poor and lowly Christ, suffering and despised. “ In seven nations of the world,” as Monsignor Fulton J. .'sheen rem inded us at Catholic Hour less than a

At this time, we are truly hapjty to announce that the Constitutions have been successfully drafted by those of our “old girls” with legal training. Perhaps, a serious handicap to complete membership, in full participation of privilege and responsibility may be attrib uted to the la cuna very positively created by the lack of a written governing-instrument. Under the articles, the Regents of the Chapters will form the Advisory Council, having active and passive vote, on matters of procedure and policy. Temporary chair­ men will be appointed until the elections can be hel d.

We are anticipating the fond wish of our Very Reverend Mother General, a National Federation of Ursuline Alumnae. We hope to take our places with an organization whose efficiency, loyalty, an d service cannot be surpassed by any. We have made excel­ lent progress thus far. We have no fear for the present changes necessarily drafted to accommodate our extensive groupings.

AVe, too, shall be eminently pleased witb your personal active membership— not membership by organization only— in the International Federation of Catholic Alumnae. T heir conventions have always inspired wonder in your Federation Sister. An or­ ganization that has at heart all the devout Catholic reveres— Legion of Decency, Burses for the Education of Religious Sisterhoods, Braille, Art, Music, Social Service, Scouting— an organization th at is born of true Catholic Culture certainly must attract you personally. Be one with them, but bring with you the happy experience of sound organization, effective procedure, and an inspiring educational policy of progress had in your own Alumnae under the super­ vision of those whose name you bear and whom you devoutly call Alma Mater.

W hen I went to our missions in the West of the dear old LI.S..\. I found that your generosity had helped the struggling missionaries along and now here in looking over the hooks of former years again it is your generosity th at has kept this mission alive. Your parochial schools and your lovely Academy speak their own story. So, my dear Mothers and Sisters, in the name of this little community I congratulate you and thank you for all you have done to further God’s cause during these fifty years of fruitful labor.

I am sure that Sister Marie .Albert tells you all the Berbice news so I shall not burden you by re­ peating. Sister is a lovely little soul and she has a great influence on these poor people who love her so dearly. She really has too much to do hut it seems that nothing can be done about it as we are so few and the work must be taken care of. She seems to thrive on hard work though for seemingly at least she is very well and very, very happy. .She is the life of the community. Wdiat was your loss is our gain.

You are all often in my thoughts and prayers for I can never forget your kindness to me last summer — you made me feel so much at home. May God bless each dear one and reward you as only He can. .All we can do to repay you is to pray and that we do. These nuns often say, “ What would we have done had it not been for Bedford P a r k ? ” Much love to each dear one. Sister Marie .Albert will be writing real soon. She went to (dass haskcthall games, saw an impressive mirnher of movies, and went skating with the gang on the street. This was 1938.

19.39. Hitler invaded Poland. England and France declared war. People called it a phoney war because nothing happened. But all this was very remote from M iss X. She was fourteen now, her hair was more lame, her uniform fitted her better, and she worried constantly about her face. She was taking geometry now, struggled valiantly, and skimmed through the R egents’ in the low eighties. She would try out little French phrases on her friends. She wore lip ­ stick with a little more confidence, and would troop down to Sinnigen’s of an afternoon with a group of the girls and sit there talking— oh, a long while— about dozens of things. Sometimes she would become very discouraged, and go home and cry because she wasn’t pretty or brilliant or a sparkling conversation­ alist. She had gone to her first big affair early in the year, and was looking forward eagerly.

It was 1940. (It seemed strange to write a four instead of a three.) This war was very serious now.

First Holland fell, then Belgium, then France. The Nazis were pounding at Britain. 1940— election year.

She had many an argument with benighted friends over politics. She was dressing with greater care now, wearing high heels whenever possible. She was heartbroken over the school edict banning lipstick and nail-polish. .She went with a group of the girls to Washington, and wrote back several “ having won­ derful time” postal cards. She went out nights once a week, and longed for the time wdien she would be a senior.

1941— Senior year! Everything was different now.

She had no trouble in disposing of her chance-books.

She fell imdiahly superior in a class of juniors, and took tentative ituffs at a forbidden cigarette. She danced well, she talked well, and was no longer jealous of other girls who had more of the w orld’s goods. .She went out on dates, and from time to lime by contrast great responsibility was thrust upon her. .She was now, she realized, a definite, vital creature with distinct likes and dislikes. .She worried in a casual way about History and English Regents. .She tried to he very blase and sojihisticated.

1938 1939 1940 1941 Four brief years, and yet they cover an epoch. Between 1938 and 1942 something was lost. An eager, timid, and curiou.sly appealing freshman had entered the school in 1938, disappeared into the depths and wa? never seen again. A bright, school-girlish naivete was lost some­ where down the years, and in its place a very confi­ dent, self-assurance emerged. With the hobby socks and too-short coat, something else was shed, some­ thing that was a part of youth and gaiety and grace, something that has slid away during the years and will never quite return again.

Oh, those walls! Those hidden green walls! I wonder what they would say if they could speak. I wonder if they’ve ever known the thousand dreams and sorrows and aspirations dreamed within them— the far lands visited, the palace-corridors trodden, the homage of crowds paid—the manifold, extravagant, wonderful dreams of youth, lost and frozen for eter­ nity between those walls. For good or ill they hold the youth of the world.

Well, the little girl in the fable is grown up now. She has drifted apart from her school friends, but she is well-pleased with her life. She no longer has her terrific enthusiasms, schoolgirl crushes, cata clysmic woes— life is cooler, saner, more tranquil.

Her nam e? Oh, her name is legion— Mary Smith, Margaret Jones, j a n e Brown. She lives in a thousand cities and goes to a thousand schools, and has a thousand friends. She’s all the girls you’ve ever known . . . and none of them. She is tragic, comic, brilliant, drab, social, studious, pretty, ugly, ch arm ­ ing, rude, pathetic, hut always winsome, completely captivating. She is youth.

Oh yes, we just about quaked when we saw the imposing faculty, hut, as the humble class of ’42, the upperclassmen filled us with awe— Little did we dream that someday we would he the dignified seniors!— T h at freshmen classroom up in the clouds offered a super view of Fordham campus. Everyone envied onr position - such fu n ! ! ! Those cake parties with Miss Dorothy Barrett made us forget about our calories—Academic standing? Why we pleased all!

And the days in preparation for the Annual Bazaar were chucked full of h uhhuh and work. Although we are reluctant to admit it, our juvenile imaginations just ran away with us when we hoped to attract jiatrons to our exhibit— Kememher? Mary Gallagher, Ellen Bradley and the rest of us seriously thought of blossoming forth into “ Snow W hite and the .Seven Dwarfs”— Heaven help the dwarfs on a day like that. .After the thrill of our first retreat, days of sweet silent thought, we felt a keener feeling of gratitude for many things— T h at first Christmas together was ju st about the nearest thing to heaven. Can we ever forget Mother Boniface’s surprise? It was on th at momentous occasion, a prospective Ruth Lowe fof “I ’ll Never Smile A gain” fame) in the person of Fran Russo, introduced her own composition which will undoubtedly he sung by all in ’45— Right about this time we suffered a loss, for Mary McGuiness left class, hut our pain was ea.sed by the chic presence of Dorothy Vachio in our February class— Guilty of hazing? Why the “green frosh” scamp­ ered away as the shadow of a sophomore fell across their [tath— At this point, a clnh for the elite popped up which embraced everything from beanies to slam hooks—-Like Napoleon, we too met our Waterloo in the form of the diabolical monster— Geometry— An English class paper, “The Homespun Journal,” saw the light of day as Virginia M urtha helped on the artistic end of it all—This class of ours went down in the annals of history by receiving honorable men­ tion for an English article. Saint Brenden’s loss was our gain as we welcomed Doris Hickey, Elaine Nolin and Joan Quinn to our midst— That family of ours was enlarged by the addition of several girls from 0 . L. M.— Margaret Clarke, Catherine Zaruba, Lauretta Tucker, Mary Lyons and Veronica Kelly became members of our great class you know— Our zealous mission spirit was aroused by the fascinating tales of Mother F abian’s far-off Siam— The week’s hackbreaking toil was re­ lieved by social dancing classes where characters with two left feet struggled with the Viennese waltz— The young triumvirate of Ellen Bradley, Donalda Marcy, and Jeanette Kroetz won school wide fame by their ingenious costume at the Athletic Associa­ tion Ball— M. .S. Those sea-faring Navy rooters cast venomous looks in the direction of the sole W'est Point supporter— one of ye editors— Our mission boxes were filled to capacity this year through the earnest endeavors of Jo Cuomo and Dorothy McBride, our mission zealotresses— While Eileen Sorg became the belle of the U. S. Naval Academy, Dorothy Vacliio and Pat Kane had a gala time watching Cornell defeat Colgate— such gay m em o ries--O ur own talented Maryrose Sturz and Margie Farrell, the lovely hallerinas, compared notes on their numerous trips to Florida and Berm uda—The passive ways of Helen Shalley seem to hlend beautifully with the quiet reservedness of Barbara Foley and Rosanna Quest.

Now as we eagerly look forward to senior banquets, ribbon hound diplomas and class rings, our spirits rise and we, the Catholic women of tomorrow, march bravely into a world of turmoil and misery armed with a splendid Hrsuline education— And so, with “hearts on higli,” we take one last lingering look, as the gates of Mount Saint Ursula swing slowly closed on the class of ’42.

Hail and farewell.

Under the leadership of Mother .St. Pierre, our .Moderalor. the Alhlelic Association achieved both social and athletic success. The season o|)ened with a belated hut welcomed Thanksgiving jjarty for the incoming Freshmen.

In a Fox Trot contest, Rita K(qtp and .Anne Koijpel received a prize, while Eleanor Harkins and Therese .Mitchell were awarded one for their Lindy. The party was a huge success, and everyone from the Freshmen to the .Seniors, enjoyed it.

After weeks of intense practice under the able coaching of Miss -Malxiney, Mount .St. Ursula entered the Catholic C irls’ High .School tournament sponsored by the C. Y. 0 . Although in their first game they lost to Aquinas Hall, they scored an overwhelming triumph over invincible .St. Nicludas of Tolentine.

Basket after basket was scored, and much excitement filled every minute of the game. This victory was followed by a brave hut futile contest, ending in a defeat to St. Simon Stock. But once again the \ arsity redeemed themselves by defeating Mount St. Vincent, although M. .S. U. trailed at the half, they rallied in the last qu arter to a victorious finale.

JO A N Q l INN It has become the custom of the Mount Saint Ursida Glee Club to present an operetta in the spring of each year. This year they offered the Gilbert and Sullivan satire. Patience. With the chorus limited for the first time. Miss Marshall was altle to train the choristers in the stage technique. As a result, they portrayed their parts as ably as did the principals.

Any praise the cast receives for its performance is due to the musical competence of the conductor, for .Miss Marshall gives freely of her talents to all the members of the Glee Club. .Special laudation should he given to Margery Hunter and V^ivienne Thomas who completed their fourth year of Glee Club service with brilliant performances. Margery was the milk maid. Patience; Vdvienne played Bunthorne, the aesthetic poet.

The operetta showed care and serious effort on the part of all concerned. W ithout the able assistance of Mother Boniface, the Moderator, the show coidd not have gone on. A memorable performance brought the Glee Club year to a commendable close.

After all, he was not a man of steel.

In the distance he conid glimpse faintly by the remaining light the dim outlines of a small village.

After breaking into a run he felt a wet dnqi or two on his hand, lint the storm broke hefoi'e he reached the first house and panting and soaking he strode angrily into a small ramshackle building proudly labelled " I ’Innkett's Oysters.”

He was a tall angular man, with a thin face, thin lips, and a sort of furtive expression. Me slouched a hit and had a tendency to pidl his hat down over his eyes, llis resemblance to a young weasel was startling; an (d)server might have remarked that Cassius was not the only one to have a "lean and hungry look.”

I here was only one other customer in the shop at the time. A morose-looking person sat moodily drink ­ ing a sarsaparilla. " H i ! ” Spikes announced. “I t ’s ra in in g !”

1 he proprietor, an old man wiping the counter, nodded. “ And w'ill be for an hour or two, I'm thinking.”

Spikes sputtered. “ But I can’t wait. I ’ve got to get over to Vineyard Haven before sundown.”

“P erhap s,” agreed the man cheerfully, “ hut I don’t see what you’re going to do about it.”

Spikes took a chair in injured silence. The great New Vork gangster balked by a provincial storm, he thought bitterly. And he must reach Vineyard Haven. Hiding out, you know. He chuckled. There was no denying it. He was a big time crook now.

A fter a time in Vineyard Haven— a month or two— he would return to the scene of his former triumphs in the city. The rain had turned to a steady down­ p ou r; gloomily he walked to the window.

He looked out and noticed a muddy child playingin the rain. The child laughed at him, raised a sling­ shot, and caught him neatly on the temple. “ Yay-oi!” he yelped indignantly. He rubbed the sudden sharp shooting pain.

The man behind the counter sped toward him in concern, m urm uring apologies.

“Of all the— ” Spikes began furiously.

Mr. P lunkett bent solicitously over him. “I ’m so sorry, Mr. — — That must be my granddaughter.

I ’ll punish her, all right, this evening. You’re not hurt, I h o p e ? ”

.Siiikes did not answer. He glared in the direction of the child in the rain -and suddenly his eye was caught by a tiny black hall swinging in the curtain I)ull. He stared at it dumbfounded. He picked it u[), turned it over, examined it from all sides. There was no dotiht about it. .Spikes was by way of being a connoisseur in his line, and his line was jewelry.

It was a genuine and extremely valuable black pearl.

I'igures with five or six zeros flashed through his m in d; he visualized himself riding in an expensive limousine up Park Avenue, a diamond stickpin in his lie. A smile of bliss appeared on his thin lips, and in lhal instant was crystallized a life’s ambition.

He must have th at pearl.

He realized that by a hit of sleight of hand the pearl would he in his pocket and himself out of the store within ten minutes. Spikes was an artist at his calling. To finger the pearl lovingly, to caress it gently— loosening the k n o t—was almost automatic with him.

He turned a bland and smiling face to the pro­ prietor. He sized him up more minutely than he had done before. He concluded that iVlr. Plunkett was a harmless, unworldly old gentleman not acquainted with present-day guile. “ Aou’re not h u r t ? ” P lunkett repealed anxiously.

"No, no. No, not at all,” he reassured the anxious shopkeeper. “Not a hit. Never felt better in my life.” He became positively chummy. “ My name is Spikes,” he added genially, “ Ferdinand Spikes.”

"Pleased to meet you, Mr. Spikes,” replied the other courteously.

Having made sure that there were no law-suits on his hands, he uncomfortably proceeded to dust the windowsill.

“So you have a granddaughter.” proceeded F e r­ dinand amiably. “Darling little thing, I imagine.

Does she play with slingshots o fte n ? ” “Fairly often. Vou see, she brings the neighbors’ children in and they have a right good game. I love to watch ’em. Cunning little tykes.”

Ferdinand, as the gentleman talked to him, could not avoid making a comparison with a wide-eyed halibut. Those thick spectacles! Those weak blue peering eyes! A surge of pride swept over Ferdy.

He really began to exert himself. “ I love children,” he announced.

"Do y o u ? ” “ Oh, yes, yes. Everything about the little darlings.

Tell me, does your granddaughter have large blue eyes and lovely golden hair?

Do you call her A m elia?”

“Well, no. Not exactly,” replied Mr. Plunkett.

“She’s a brown-eyed brunette, and we call her J’iggy-” Ferdy ignored the set-back.

He turned on the gentleman what he thought was a dazzling smile.

"Do you know of a hotel in the village? 1 think 1 want to stay here.”

He was (lirected to a large, comfortable-looking building at the brow of the hill. The rain had sub­ sided by now to a steady drizzle, and the air was heavy with the scent of summer rain on green grass and brown earth, ft was a good, clean smell, and Ferdy sniffed vigorously, filling his lungs with the cold clear odor.

Mr. P lu n k ett excused himself and went to the chicken coop. As Ferdy toyed delicately with the pull, the melancholy man in the corner approached and fastened him by the buttonhole. " \ o u have light fingers, my friend,” he said softly. “Mind you, I don’t want to see anything missing around h e r e ! ” Spikes did not find his tongue until after the man was gone. Indignantly he quaffed his coca-cola.

The nerve of the fellow! A thought seized him. He had the prying personality of a detective. A de­ tective!

Spikes must he careful, then. He could afford no brush with the law. He sighed. Now he would have to do the thing the hard way. T hought­ fully he sucked his coca-cola. Well, he could play the confidence trick loo. He was just as good a confidence man as a pick-pocket any day.

Day in and day out, Ferdy tried unflaggingly to secure that pearl. He tried to make the man sell the curtain to him, on all sorts of imaginative pre­ texts.

But no luck!

The man was perversely obstinate.

At last in desperation he decided to plunge his little working capital (viz., the haul from his latest job, which was the fundam ental reason for his leaving New York) in the venture. It would mean gam bling his precious ten thousand, hut he could realize a h undred and fifty thousand on the pearl. .'Vnd honestly, too!!

Now he tried to make Mr. P lunkett sell the oyster.

"But you see, Mr. P lu n k ett,” he repeated again an d again, “you’ll never have such a grand chance another time! Just think! What good is an oyster farm to most people? W hile [— that's just what I’ve been w anting all my life !”

"B u t we’ve been here for three hundred years. . .

“Tim e you moved.”

The argum ent for the most part fell on ileaf ears, for Mr. Plunkett had his roots deep in the farm and he insisted and ke[)t insisting that it was too late to change now, and he was too old to learn another trade.

And so for the next few weeks Ferdinand ke|)t closer to Mr. Plunkett than a brother.

And he kept harping on his point.

The old silver-haired shop keeper with the wiry, llashily-dressed New York gangster soon became a familiar sight along the narrow dirt streets of the village, and even out on the beach. Ferdy helped the old gentleman dig oysters. He helped him [uepare the smelly things. Soon the ancient shop became a sort of second home to Ferdy.

"Really, now, you should sell the tiling,” he saiil for the thousandth time.

"Think of sweet little Piggy. If you should die, what .sort of future would she have, selling oysters?”

“Yes,” the old gentleman sadly agreed. “ Yes, f know.” But he made no move to offer the sho]) to Ferdy. .Vnd as the days Hew hy, Ferdy became more and more exasperated. For the first time in his life, he felt as if he were humping his head against a stone wall. He missed no opportunity to press his plea, hut old, kindly Mr. Plunkett remained obdurate, until one day things came to a head.

Je r d y called on the shop at the usual time this tlay. It was a showery, breezy day with a fresh sea breeze from offshore.

Instead of finding the familiar face of the old oysterer behind the counter, however, he found himself staring into the fresh, impertinent face of a young assistant.

"Hey, y o u !” was his greeting. “ W here’s Mr. P lu n k e tt? ” "None of your business,” replied the urchin promptly. “W h a t’ll it b e ? ” “One -Mr. P lunkett,” roared Ferdy, “if you don't want something on the side of the head.”

The boy skipped out of F erdy’s reach. For his eighteen years he had piled up an impressive amount of concentrated perverseness, thought Spikes. " W h a t’s it worth to y o u ? ” the lad demanded.

Ferdy was shocked.

He had no idea that the latest New York tactics had penetrated into the hinterlands. “ T ay-oi!” yelled Ferdy, advancing with fist up­ raised. “ You tell me— or else!”

The boy was visibly cowed. " H e ’s had a heart attack,” was the humble reply. “T hird this year.

He’s in a had way, now.”

Ferdy, after a well-placed glare, dashed up the stairs to the sick m an’s room.

Mr. P lunkett lay propped up in bed. and he smiled feebly as Ferdy entered. “ Glad to see it’s nothing serious,” said Ferdy briskly. Then a light of purest joy came into his eyes, making his thin sallow high-cheekboned face almost beautiful.

In the friendliest manner possible he sat on the

He began lo hum a lillle nine lo himself. He was inordinately happy. .'Ml his hard work was nearing its goal. .Soon ihe farm would he in his hands. Oh, happy day!

He hronght the finished eonlrael lo ihe old oysterman.

"Ifni what will / do':'” I'lunkelt whispered faintly.

"I ean’l he turned out into the streets. Not at my age.”

Kerdy considered. W'ith success in his grasp, he could not forfeit his golden oppiortnnity for a few words.

"Tell you what I'll do,” he said. " W e ’ll aikl a clause saying the sale won’t lake effect until you die. T h a t’s fair, don’t you think':” ’ "Yes, fair,” the other said. “ But are you sure you want i t ? ” he added anxiously. “ Positive,” replied Ferdy promptly, and the old man nodded.

Ferdy called up the hoy and the morose gentleman from the soft-drink har below, for witnesses. The detective glowered at Ferdy as he passed. “ Why, hello, Mr. .Staunton,” said f’lunkett.

Ferdy looked hard at the man . . . and harder at his necktie. T hen he chortled. Detective! He rec­ ognized the pearl in that tie-pin. Detectives don'l buy their jewelry from fences— at least not from F erdy’s fence.

He almost toppled over from the force of his discovery. A crook, that’s what the man was!

The old man signed.

But when counting out the seven thousand stipu­ lated by the contract Ferdy had a momentary twinge of conscience. He fingered his lillle nest-egg lov­ ingly. He had worked for it so hard. He had spent all night over that safe.

Flis fingers hurt even now from the sandpaper. He was so proud of it.

But. steeling himself, he handed Mr. Plunkett the l)recious sum.

“There you a r e ! ” he said joyftilly, and as he

received the signed docnmeni, his simple heart llowed over with [tiide. “ (iood-moridng,” he called, and went skipiting down the stairs. * :i< W'hen Ferdy added the i)hrase, “ until yon die,” he hail counted on a few days— weeks, at most. Hut when two months llew by and the old gentleman, instead of fading away, became visibly healthier, with a faint red color in his cheeks, fe r d y was annoyed. And when old Mr. Plunkett got up for the first lime, and waited on the counter downstairs, Feidy fell definitely cheated.

That was the day also he had noticed Plunkett deep in convmsalion with .Staunton, finally the old man had arisen, had taken the jiearl from the [Uill, and deposited it in a small china cup on the shelf behind the counter. Ferdy was iteriilexed.

He sal on a large cold stone down on the beach, thoughtfully sucking his walking stick. 'Ih e gulls wheeled and cawed above his unheeding head, and the late afternoon sunlight turned the yellow pebbles on the strand to purest gold. The tips of the clouds were ridged in orange and opal, and gradually in majestic sitlenilor, like a king retiring, the sun set. .Silting on the beach after sundown, idly watching the cold waves splash at his feet and then recede, Ferdy loidved the picture of woe. It was growing cold and he pulled his coat about him and humped himself over.

He was thinking of arsenic.

He must have that pearl, and .Mr. Plunkett looked as robust now as he had when Fertly had first met him. Besides, Staunton was on the scent loo. He suffered an agony of indecision.

Should he, for instance, tell dear .Mr. Plunkett that his aged sister was dying in Nantucket, and slip in anil filch the pearl while he was gone? But Plunkett was prob­ ably the tyite that had no sisters, thought he gloondly.

But he m u st have that pearl, his brain insisted.

What would .limrny Valentine have done in a situa­ tion like this? His face cleared. Whv, Valentine would have simply stepped in and burgled the place! And what Valentine could do, so could he.

He stood up suddenly and snapped his fingers.

At last, the way out. The more he examined the scheme, the better he liked it. It was foolproof.

Nobody could arrest him for burgling his own h o u se!

He executed a small dance step on the chill sands. * * a: That turned sat by loudly

night Ferdy dug out his burglary tools. He out all the lights in his little apartm ent and the window and waited. The clock ticked in the silent room, and the moon cast strange

pale ^.hallows on the pavement. ,*\n elated excitement swejtt over I'erdy. ^ i t l i i n a few hour.s, that pearl would he in his grasp. In a few hours he would be a rich man. In a week or so he would return to New \ ork in a new limousine, new clothes, and a diam ond stickpin. The latter thought made his eyes sparkle.

And so, in the quiet dark, Ferdy dreamed his happy daydreams, and waited.

1 he clock struck one; Ferdy rose, and noiselessly began putting his tools into a small black leather hag. not unlike a doctor’s valise.

His previous career filled him with confidence and not unpardonable pride. Ever since, as a gan­ gling hoy of twelve, he had gaped in reverential awe before gangster pictures, his future was certain.

He would become a sneak thief. And he did. So far, he had been as free as a bird. He had had numerous reprim ands, hut so far no sentences. He w’as gratified by his record. He took it as a proof of his cleverness.

His last “jo b ” was last May, when he relieved a wealthy New York dowager of an expensive emerald necklace. New York then became too hot for him, and he fled into the provinces to cool off. He had realized only ten thousand on the deal, hut it was still an interesting escapade.

Henceforth, he re­ solved to limit himself solely to jewelry. He knew a lot about gems.

The clock struck two.

Ferdy arose, his heart pounding strangely, and gathered up his satchel.

He opened the door cautiously, and paused, listening intently for any sound. Then, hearing nothing, he closed the door gently behind him, and tiptoed down the hall. The stairs squeaked and groaned under his weight, and at any moment he expected a booming voice to shatter the quiet night with a roaring "W h o ’s th e r e ? ” The front door screeched on its hinges, and F erdy’s heart leaped up into his throat. He waited for a few moments, then softly closed it behind him. On the porch, he took a deep breath of the cold night air, and shivered.

Well, his nerve must not fail him now.

Resolutely he walked down the front steps, and turned down the lane leading to the beach.

The night was placid and silver with hundreds of lilinking stars. Silently, Ferdy cursed the moon for the pale white light and those uncanny shadows.

The lown was so absolutely still th at Ferdy suffered a few misgivings. He could feel eyes peeping out at him from behind drawn curtains and peering down the back of his neck. His face flushed and he clutched his hag with a tighter grip. He sucked in his breath and tried not to startle the stillness, even by a single breath.

He heard footsteps coming up the street and he

Hattened out by a wall, breathing noiselessly. It was a passing policeman.

His heart gave a wild leap.

Like most New' Workers he had only the faintest idea what went on outside the city. Caught in wrongdoing, he might even be lynched!

At last he could discern the dim outlines of the oyslery imprinted sharply in the moonlight.

He walked a little faster.

He paused outside one of the parlor windows and looked up wistfully. The parlor? or should he try the shop immediately?

He stood still for a mo­ ment deliberating. Then he decided in favor of the parlor, because of the danger of misplaced tables, or vagrant apples, in the shop.

Softly he pried the window up a little way, and, a gleam in his eyes, he began his professional opera­ tions. .Soon the window scraped shrilly and gave.

All this was perfectly needless had Ferdy realized it. for the shop was entirely open and he could have walked right in had he wanted to. But doing the thing the hard way gave him a thrill of pride.

Having replaced his implements carefully in the neat Irox, he leaped over the sill and landed with a thump on the other side. He waited to see if he had disturbed anyone. Nothing. There was perfect silence all around.

Little runners of excitement chased each other down his spine. He discovered that he was facing the door of a small, well-furnished room that because of the many heavily upholstered chairs gave the impression of overcrowding.

He had never been in this part of the house before, and he was perplexed.

He had no idea where he was. “ S tu p id !” he chided himself. “ To get lost on a I)erfectly simple job like this! Imagine wandering about the house all night and having to call on the old fellow in the morning to lead me o u t! ” The thing to do was obviously to open the door and see where it led to. He proceeded to do so at once and was gratified to notice th at the door on the extreme left as you go down the hall was in the general direction of the shop. This he opened and found himself among the counters and showcases.

He leaned against the door to catch his breath, for he found himself panting rapidly. Quickly he hunted along the cups and dishes on the shelves, peering into every one and turning it over. Dismayed, he dis­ covered no pearl. Had the old gentleman susitected what he was going to do, and hidden it again? If that were true, perhaps there -n'ere policemen sur­ rounding the house now! The palms of his hands became clammy, and cold perspiration trickled down his forehead. His heart was pounding like a trip ­ hammer.

Resolutely he forced himself to think calmly. by should old Mr. Plu nkett suspect him ?

He himself had not known that he would roh the

While he was in the honse, however, he might as well search the upper roonis, Mayhe the old gentleman concealed it in his hedrooni.

Spikes reentered the passage and made his way to the (dd oak staircase, the hoards groaning and creaking heneath him. hach time he stepped on the ancient stair, it s(]nealed in jiain. .Ml at once, the funniest feeling came over him.

It was not that he was afraid of anything, hnt it was rather the feeling hreathed through the honse that something was wrong. Ferdy’s heart began to pnmp a little faster and he hurried np the steps as fast and as noi.seles.sly as he conid. lie jiansed at the landing. The door to one room was slightly ajar, and through it he could see a glaze of moonlight gleaming on something white, like a connterpane. He tiptoed softly to the door, and pushed it further o]ien. ft gave a long drawn out and eerie screech as it scraped the Moor, hnt nothing h appened; no one stirred. Sjtikes leaned against the wall and stpiinting through the opening he glimpsed the placid hnrean, a chair leaning against the window, a small table with a glass of water. He pnshed the door further open, and then his heart stood still, for there, sitting up in bed, with the moonlight gleaming on his white hair, and staring straight at the intruder - - was old Mr. Plu nkett!

Heedless of noise, Ferdy had clattered blindly down the stairs, wildly excited, his eyes staring, his heart frozen. Somehow he had got home, he never knew’ quite how. And now' he sat in his small room behind drawn curtains, his small black automatic lying on his knees. He was in a more awful state of absolute fear, of perfect, unmitigated, craven fear than he had ever been before in all his life. His throat was ab.solntely dry and parched and no amount of water seemed to relieve the burning.

His head swam, he felt dizzy: he was literally sick with fear. And now he was waiting literally breathless, for something— anything— to h a p ­ pen before he went mad.

.Suddenly he was electrilied by the s(niud of a vigorous, authoritative hell.

He stillened in his chair, and perspiration Inajke out on his forehead and on the palms of his hands. The commanding hell rang again and nearly broke itself iu two. Ferdy hid his revolver in his [)ocket, and got up unsteadily to his feet. He was aware that he was trembling like an aspen leaf in a March wind, and his wild, staring eyes and chalky face must have told every­ thing to an observer. He walked to the door shaking from head to foot. His knees felt like water, and every instant he expected them to give way heneath him. .Suddenly, he gulped miserably and flung open the door.

Mr. .Abel, the county lawyer, stood on the doormat.

Ferdy’s heart did a few pirouettes like a Kussian ballerina, hut this was better than he expected. “ C-c-come in,” he gasped, and smiled weakly. The gentleman stared at him rudely, then walked in.

He sat in a chair in the parlor and lit a cigarette.

Ferdy took the chair op|)osite him because he felt that he could not stand up any longer.

The visitor drew a document from his brief-case.

‘■| have had news to tell you,” he said. "Old .Mr. Plunkett died last night of a heart attack. He was found dead in bed this morning. Tragic case.” He shook his head sadly. “ He was quite a character in the neighborhood, you know. His family had been here three hundred years. Pity! Well, here is the deed to your property; it is yours now.

I never guessed that you were interested in oyster^. You don’t look like the tyjjp to me. .Still, you never can tell.

I suppose you see possibilities in the p lace ?”

"Possibilities? Oh. yes, possibilities,” Ferdy m ur­ mured bleakly. “ Great possibilities.”

“Well, you know best. Still, I suppose you know that the oysters died out about here several years ago. Poor -Mr. Plunkett, he barely made a li\in g selling soft drinks and picking up an occasional oyster. I know he’s been trying to get rid of the jilace lor years.”

He handed the paper to Ferdy. “ He didn't have any relatives,” he continued, “except his little g ra n d ­ daughter. You met h e r ? ” “ Oh, yes.” “ Sweet little thing, A hit high s])irited. Well, she’s pretty well off now. You know, that was (Uie of the oddest things about old P lunkett. His dis­ belief in batiks, 1 mean. He absolutely refused to put any of his savings in a bank. Tsed to keep them sewed up in his mattress. Queer, don't vou think? He left his most valuable possessions right out in the open. He thought that no one would think them valuable enough to steal.

When the door liad finally closed behind the lawyer, Ferdy l)roke into wild sohs of pain and mortifica­ tion. "Oysters!

Oysters!’’ he wailed. "Ferdinand Spikes, you are an oyster!"

It was like any other house on the block. Its grounds were no different from those of its neighbors.

There were maples in the back yard behind which the sun peeped every morning. T here was a garden in wliich the holly and tulips, roses and asters l)loomed successively throughout the year; there were hack steps on which the clothespin bag was sure to be found, and a screen door that slammed when­ ever anyone went in or out. To the side was a rusty rainpipe down which the rain and hail clattered on had days. .4n attic window, closed all year round, was opened for a week in the spring, when the winter things were packed away and the summer clothes taken out. There was a wide porch cold and bare in winter, cool and comfortable in sum mer; two front doors whose glass was religiously polished every ■Saturday morning, and a black mail box, broken four days after it had been bought. There was a smooth green lawn with a snowball hush in the centre, a straggly hedge and a squeaky gale, and a w'alk of slate slabs, slightly jagged. Yes, this house had all the features of any other house— there was nothing unusual about it. And yet, it brings tears to my eyes whenever I think of it— nostalgic, hitter tears, for. d on ’t you see, this had been my home!

A small boat churned through the burgundy-colored water, as stealthily and as noiselessly as a thief. Near a muddy hank, a slimy log swayed harmlessly in the water— until a stick was thrown in that direction.

Then, as if anim ated by a Ijolt of lightning, it turned its red, vicious eyes to its attacker, showed sharp, pointed teeth in its long mouth, and slunk away to the shadows. It was our first encounter with a ’gator. Grotesque cypresses loomed out of the d a rk ­ ness like gnarled dwarfs and formed a canopy above our heads so dense that the only glow in the jungle was an eerie light that dappled the sandy floor. Lush waterfalls of Spanish moss cascaded over the majestic trees, which were fringed with masses of snow-white spikes pouring their heavy, intoxicating vanilla scent into the humid atmosphere, with here and there a purple marsh violet. Brilliant green ferns formed blankets on the trunks of some of the oaks. O cca­ sionally the shrill cry of some marsh bird would pierce the stillness like a knife. On and on we glided, until we were almost blinded by brilliant sunlight and choked by fresh air. Out of that dismal, oppressive place we came at last into a land of blue sky and green grass.

Hut there is one fault which I will shamefacedly adnut possessing. Having seen my duty. I am some­ how’ rehictant to see it accomplished, <ir rather, I would like to sec it emerge from hehind a curtain, gloriously completed, hy hut a single command of my will.

Isuch was the state of my sleep-drugged mind, that I lackadaisically lifted mv hand, murmured.

“Close .'sesame,” and drifted hack lo slumher. It was a satisfying little dream 1 had then. 1 seemed to float out of hed, glide gently to the offending window, close it, and drift hack lo hed, warm and comfortahle, with an inane little self-complacent smile on my face. Hut my persistent conscience and a draught on my neck, disturhed my rest, and forced me lo realize that the window was still learing at me.

Its evil grin taunted me. threatening to annihilate me with one quick icy blast, if 1 dared to venture forth from the sheltering blankets; whereas, if I did not curl) its power, it would slowly freeze me lo the hedsprings, not even letting me die in peace, hut tor­ turing me with its incessant rattle.

I courageously sat up, gathering the hed-clothes about my shivering form as I went, hut the sub-zero current of fresh air that struck me, plus the inhuman exertion, was too much for my lethargic limbs, and I sank hack, exasperated and thoroughly chilled. .Suddenly, an idea struck me that put an end to my quandary. Why, of course! Why had I never thought of it before! The only reason that this silly window annoyed me so long was because I had never grasped the real import of an open window.

■My mind strayed to the grand hall of the Capulets, where the family and a few guests were dining.

Juliet was her usual charm ing self, hut if one watched her carefully, one could discern an undercurrent of anxiety in her manner. As soon as the meal was over, she excused her.self, and hurried lo her room. Here she wailed, with [)ounding heart, beside an open window, for the call of her lover. Wouhl he come tonight? Wouhl she hear him when called? Doubts riddled her mind. Finally, just below the window, she heard her name swcellv come from his beloved lips, and she hurried with bright eyes and flushed cheeks lo meet him. How precious was thal window lo her! What an important part it played in her life!

When you think of Christmas time, who comes to your mind hut jolly old Santa Claus? Santa is an ancient institution, and long ago he had his start in the person of Saint Nicholas, of Italy. On Christ­ mas Eve. he would go (juielly about, distrihuling gifts to gladden the hearts of poor children, always keeping his identity a secret. His simple presents made many a child gloriously happy, and just seeing them this w’ay gave great satisfaction to the benevolent saint. .Another, less widely known, act of his was the donat­ ing of dowries to poverty-stricken young ladies. When he heard of such a girl, who was about to he married, he wouhl hasten lo her home and throw a little sack of money through an open window. Thus, the girl would see her future come sailing through the open window.

So here was the true history of that tantalizing rectangle of emptiness. Down through the ages, it had shared in intrigue, brought romance to one, riches to another. What, then, might I not gain hy leaving it so? Perhaps some wonderful event was waiting for just such an opportunity to introduce itself lo my life.

There was love, adventure, wealth, beckoning to me, in that pool of blackness beyond the window.

Just then, another icy warning disspelled even these happy reflections, and I was forced to admit, “ 1 really must close thal w in dow !”

Something rare and fine was in the atmosphere at Mount St. Ursula, and none of us who were students there remained unaffected by it. For lack of a better word, / shall call it ‘distinctive.’ The visible effect was a manner of simplicity and gentle dignity. . . . What most distinguished the girls of the Academy was that lovely manner that was taught there. We were taught it so well that it was not a superficial veneer. It was absorbed really; not learned. It came from within outward. My mother spoke rarely of this, more often dwelling upon the affection of the Nuns, and the beauty of the Academy,— what remains, what comes to me, is ivhat I hold the. true meaning of ‘LA D Y’.” We, Class of 1942, shall take these sacred words of a mother of one of us to heart as we go forth, with the aid of God’s grace and the blessing of Alma Mater.

And he fell in love.

.MY GARDEN OF MEMORY The light of rem embrance creeps over my garden and lies there glimmering softly, while the first glimpses of perception that accompany the recognition of beauty, pass fleetingly through my mind. Dear, lovely old garden, brilliant in the sunlight and mysteriously enchanted hy the light of the moon. I felt a strangely radiant joy as I first walked through the beautiful old iron work gate, that precisely halved the length of the thick yew hedge. Still now, I experience a thrill as I sit, but only in memory, under the narrow green arch formed hy rambler roses and listen to the “feathered choir” awake, singing its canticle of praise to the Creator. You see, in the dawn, the prelude of living as it were, I found the meaning of life; I found my God. The pleasure in beauty is an unconsciously ex­ pressed desire of the soul; the recognition of beauty is really the recognition of God. A bird’s song, a sun-streaked sky, a Hower, in them we see or hear more than the exterior. Subconsciously we search more deeply until we find the answer to what we are looking for. Men were made to search for the m ean­ ing in life. In my garden, I found it, and I go on now enriched in mind, encouraged in spirit.

Children are playing there now— children under my green arch, running along the graveled paths between the hedges, sitting under the clump of trees at the far end of the ivy-covered red brick wall.

Aes, children are playing and growing up there in my garden of memory— my grandchildren!

The earth has released its grip on the intense cold of snow and ice; the warmth of the sun and a fresh force of water surges through its midst. Spring has come with the traditional song of the robin, the green sprout of a crocus pointing its head through the ground, and the wholly A m er­ ican arrival of baseball. R eturn to w inter? Never!

T h e buds on the branches are not willing to succumb to such incongruity, nor is the woman in the gay spring hat across the street, nor that first marble game on the corner, nor my own heart. This first swift aw areness of spring sends a radiance coursing through m en’s veins th at chokes out pain and pierces the arm or plate of bitterness and hate.

W h at will it hold for men, this spring? Will it bring the ravages of war right into their lives, their homes? Or will the inevitable offensive be staved off, so th at they may experience just “ another spring” with gay laughter, fresh, clean air, jau n ty flower

bonnets perched blithely on women’s heads? Will the trees burst into their full glory to he stirred rest­ lessly above happy voices?— or will they rustle as mysteriously as ever, but above bomb-torn pavements, and masses of brick razed to the ground in the glow of twilight?

The fear of the earth,— rather, the fear of the weak-hearted on this earth cannot hold back the spring, nor can the “ smoke of battle black it out.”

The miracle of the awakening of nature after a long winter’s sleep, the awakening of men’s hearts and souls is spring. The wrath of an enemy may rent open their hearts with their towns, villages, and cities, hut with the next spring will come a rebirth.

There is always a spring to await,— a spring th at will dissolve the ice in men’s hearts with the ice in their hills, the spring that will give them the courage to create new lives out of ruin. “The return of spring is assurance that life is immortal, and creation beautiful.”

DRO SSAER TS Archbishop of San Antonio T H E D IV IN E q u e r y “ W hither Goest T h o u ? ” It was this singularly challenging question that P eter put to His Master at the gates of Rome. And the answ er was bewildering to the once daring, but now abashed apostle, “ I am going to Rome to be crucified again.” P eter understood then what Christ w anted of him . . . to be His representative, to con­ tinue His work on earth. Glorious mission— that of an apostle! . . . .

Today it is Christ Himself who asks this same searching question more insistently, more yearningly every day of the souls of youth on the eve of their maturity. These have kept the beauty, the charm of their innocence unsm irched, their minds have held the vision of great deeds unclouded. Christ loves them as of old He loved the pure of heart in Palestine.

And, because of that love. His question is full of tender hope. “ W hither Goest T h o u ? ” Lord, I am going where the rest of them go . . .

I am going into life with eagerness, with desire. All is so lovely in this beautiful world of Your creation.

I am going forth to enjoy the delights, the pleasures th at await me. But, Lord, I shall not forget the tithe th at is due You, and Your commandments I shall keep with love and faithfulness to the end of my days.

A nd Christ recognizes th at soul as one of the elect.

“W'hither Goest T h o u ? ” Lord, I am going into life, not to feast upon ordinary joys, but to develop and fructify the intel­ lectual gifts You have given me. I want to leave the world richer for my endeavors. But, Lord, I shall not forget to keep Your law. I shall make that law loved for You shall have a great part in my labors. . . .

And Christ smiles upon that soul who will give p art time service for His kingdom.

“W h ith er Goest T h o u ? ” Lord, to do Your work, for I am all Yours.

And Christ recognizes His very own. His colahorers on earth, and loves th at soul with an all­ surpassing, unmeasured love.

CHRLST’S C O-LA B OR ERS— C O N T IN U A T IO N OF T H E A P O S T O L IC T R A D IT IO N T h e answer to the query of the Master is indeed a searching and a test of hearts. A nd in an age of

casual, and often, selfish service, rendered for m e r­ cenary motives, does it seem possible to find souls ready to continue in the Apostolic tradition, to do His work regardless of personal interests an d affec­ tions not consistent with it? Every age has its elite — the generous-hearted, the valiant of purpose, the strong of will— , for whom the beautiful, the ardent, the unselfish mission of the kingdom of Christ spells the greatest achievement to be attained on earth.

And today, despite the killing indifference of the many and the open scorn of the worldly-minded.

Christ does not lack colaborers who, with clear vision and determined will, serve Him with loving intimacy and expend their energy and their love upon others so that these, too, may learn the great­ ness and joy of serving Christ and His Church.

C H A R A C T ER IS T IC S OF T H E AGE USED IN T H E SERVICE OF C H R IST Age of Independence Youth in the 20th. century still throngs the foot­ steps of Christ as in the days of His earthly life.

He still evokes nobleness, enthusiasm, and gener­ osity. And if independence be a characteristic of our times, how surely, daringly, do His followers de­ clare their severing from worldly opinions and a t­ titudes!

How courageously do they pitch the stan­ dard of Christ, His purity. His humility. His charity against the lust, the pride and the selfishness of the worldly-minded! For if there are bad tendencies in human nature, there are also superior affinities; there are ways that lead upward as well as those th at lead downward. And independence that means freedom and license to do evil for the had and mediocre, means liberty of spirit for the followers of Christ— freedom from human respect and the slavery of pride.

AGE OF ACTIV ITY O ur age is considered, and justly so, an era of tremendous activity, especially of intellectual activity in the field of literature and science. The life spent without the pale of worldly ambitions is called drab, uninteresting, and monotonous— , not to say, useless.

And there are those who agree because they know not whereof they speak. They forget th at restless­ ness is not activity, but dissipation of forces. God demands of His disciples, it is true, a certain control, a certain quietude, a leaving-off of petty personal interests and pursuits, but th at is in order that their minds and hearts may be free for the working of the intellect in His service. The saint and scholar of olden days is more necessary than ever today to

This same, or rather, even greater fearlessness is reepdred in the service of (fod. For here the obstacles are not merely material, but come from the spirit. To uphold ideals, to battle with one.self in face of te m p­ tations, lo save souls, demands limitless faith, heroic courage, fidelity without weakness. . . . Christ is loving, but exacting in llis love, lie must needs build up in llis apostles of the 20tb. century as lie did in the fishermen of Galilee, a certain ruggedness, and because of this. He does not make life for them soft and easy and agreeable. How could they help Him in His work of redemption wrapped up in their own little, narrow doings?

Greater horizons He want.s for them. His own are so vast, and they are co­ laborers with Him.

T H E U R S H L IN E O RD E R .AN A P O S T O L IC ORD ER It is upon those consecrated to Him, His direct co-laborers, that Christ counts to establish His reign in the hearts of all men. The apostolic tradition has ever been a living heritage, and lo it the Church owes her most heroic sons and daughters. .Always in the founding of her religious orders, there has been as a basic cause an apostolic endeavor. W it­ ness the first order to devote itself exclusively lo the education of women— the Ursuline Order. What St. Ignatius Loyola had done at about the .same time for the guidance and moral regeneration of young manhood, .St. Ursula Merici undertook to accom­ plish for her sex. It required daring originality and divine courage to put aside so deliberately the cus­ toms of the age. W hat I women in all stations of life to be educated in the 16th. century!

But St. .Angela was strong in purpose, a valiant woman after God's own heart. The danger to faith and morals was g r e a t; heresies w'ere ram pant every­ w here; laxity and degeneracy existed in all ranks of society. It was work worthy of an apostle, of a clear-eyed thinker, of a pioneer. St. Angela was all three, and today, what is the result? Lrsulines in all parts of the world furthering the work of Christ.

the elevation of woman, the esiahlishmeni of C h ris­ tian homes, and the founding of other and later teaching orders who trod the path Angela had opened by divine insjiiration and (darity of vision.

■Sindlar conditions to those of the f6lh. century exist today. Faith and morals are ever threatened by agnosticism, free-thinking and love of ease. And it is in the ai)ostolic purpose of its foundation that the Lrsuline Order has kept its [lerennial youth, and is rendered fecund, as of old the teatdiing of Christ and the twelve, by its two principles of vitality—its soul and body: prayer anil action.

In [irayer, more especially in mental prayer, is planted the seeds of fruition, for action is nothing else hut the visible manifestation of the spirit of faith within the soul. It is a sad hut enlightening experience to see upon .so many lips the disabused smile, the hitler smile, even, replacing the candor, the inner joy of faith. It is not easy to keep the youth of the soul and the vigor of supernatural life.

But prayer— the oneness with God has this efficacy.

It is the hidden spring of action.

It is also the sanclificalion of action, the means to make it selfless, untainted by vain glory or the seeking after personal advantage, and truly apostolic in character.

I he second Hrsuline principle of vitality is Ac­ tion. .All apostles, obscure or famous, have worked for the spiritual coming of Christ into the hearts of men. This apostolate, to he worthy, to he fruitful, must he understanding, zealous and totally unselfish.

How many are there in the history of the Church who have given themselves passionately for the suc­ cess of the tomorrows that they themselves never saw. hut that their love had prepared for the .Master! \\ hen analyzed in this perspective, so much wider than our human vision, there can he no littleness in our zeal and the glad tidings of the Gospel should he luminous enough to envisage the goal of our la­ bors. True apostolic life is stern in its requirem ents, hut the joy of cooperating with Christ is exceeding, great, and boundless.

If there appears to he sternness in the service of Christ, it is because it seems difficult to he totally geneious. Complete renunciation, however, is what He demanded of His first followers. He does not ask less now, and the day when the vows of oblation will no longer ascend from earth. Calvary will he speedily forgotten, and true apostolic life a thing of the past, f o r the three vows of Poverty, Chastity, and O bedi­ ence are the underlying force in the religious life.

They mean a renovation, the setting up of new aims, of other worldly ideals— the ideals of Christ. They mean, too, a different understanding of life, a dif­ ferent .sense of values.

They lake away— what?

T H E T H R E E F O L D C H A R A C T E R OF T H E D R S L L IN E O R D E R ■4 Teaching Order “ Go ye, therefore, teach all nations,” is the apos­ tolic mission Christ gave to the twelve, the only direct comm and as to their work recorded by the Gospel. It is also the sole objective of the lirsulines as an order. The Church knows well th at it is by giving youth a thorough training that the level of Catholic life will rise and the Kingdom of Christ not only a vision, hut a reality. In every specialty, w hether it he in science, the arts, or in sainthood, the elite directs, the masses follow. Ami surely, in the moral domain, a great renunciation and the ori­ entation of life toward superior ends play an im­ po rtant role, mainly by their occult influence. It is to this field of spiritual and intellectual leadership th at Christ called His disciples. It is the work to which the Ursulines primarily devote themselves after having received intensive training in the Novitiate, the House of .Studies, and, above all, by the living close to Christ in the complete u n derstand­ ing of His aim and His love.

T h e training of leaders in the Lay .Apostolate to sponsor Catholic Action, the fostering of an intel­ lectual elite are all included in the work of leaching which means the sowing of virtues, of qualities, spiritual an d mental, the cultivation of abilities, of talents to be used in the service of God, not with pride, but with eagerness in the propagation of truth. Response to so high an ideal and allied to personal disinterestedness makes teaching like a spiritual an d fecund motherhood.

" The spirit of adventure, which when spiritualized, really becomes the spirit of perfect detachment and trust in God. has been the spirit that has enabled I rsuliues to venture in all parts of the world today. They were the first to establish schools in the L. .S.— at New Orleans for the white and black races. They are now in Mexico, Cuba. China, .Siam, .South .Africa.

Alaska, and now the Holy Father is asking them to go to Soviet Russia, and they are preparing to obey.

The days of Francis Xavier, of Jogues and M ar­ quette, of Yen. .Mother -Mary of the Incarnation, have not passed wdthout leaving a profound im ­ print. The 20th. century is witnessing a renaissance of the missionary spirit— the spirit of apostolic zeal —with sturdiness, persistence and broad understand­ ing as its characteristics. This work, one of the main features of the Ursuline Order, is done with an en­ tirely Catholic outlook, for it is performed in obedi­ ence to the Holy Father, in close cooperation with him. It is, therefore, not narrow and individual, hut universal— the work of Christ.

A P IO N E E R ORD ER St. Angela, together with .St. Ignatius Loyola, were the great pioneers of the 16th. century. The Ursulines were the first to undertake systematically the hitherto unheard-of work of teaching women and girls of all classes, the first, consequently, to realize the tre­ mendous influence of woman in the home, in civic and social life, in the service of the Church. The virtues that .St. Angela possessed were pioneer vir­ tues. They are Ursuline virtues by heritage and tradition. Pioneers in the new order of things are needed in the 20th. century where good must ever oppose evil, knowledge combat ignorance. Larger views of life, keener understandings of things divine and human, great heartedness are necessary today to counteract false standards. .Strength of soul, en­ durance, unselfish cooperation are vital to the pionneer spirit— the spirit that has been bequeathed to Ursulines by .St. Angela.

The query of Christ, “W hither Goest T h o u ? ” has been heard down the ages by thousands of Ursulines.

And whether in the midst of the essence of civiliza­ tion and learning in the big centers of Europe and .\m erica, or in the fever-blasted territories of Africa and India, or in the frozen stejipes of the Far North, the answering cry has rejoiced the heart of the Master as of old -the cry that tells of love, of eager­ ness, of courage, “To follow Thee Withersoever Thou Goest.” ' Repplier, Mere Marie of the ('rsiilines, p. 1.

At that moment they pledged themselves— all that they had and are— not only to live, but to die, if God so wills, for the F aith His Excellency represents. They were living symbols of Serviam; I shall serve Him Who sent me by means of loyalty,— loyalty to God and to His shepherds on earth ; by courage,— courage to defend and exalt the faith ; by courtesy,— courtesy toward "even the least of My b reth ren ” that by good example more may flock to Him. St. l.Ysula’s Day was celebrated with customary fervor and splendor. Forty Hours Devotion was opened on October nineteenth and was concluded with a .Missa Cantata in honor of our Holy Patroness on her feast.

How appealing is St. L'rsula of Britain to the learned ladies of the centuries, St. Ursula, the patron saint of school girls and of those who strive to teach t h e m ! A quaint biographer describes her thus: “She was not only wonderfully beautiful and gifted with all the external graces of her sex, but accom­ plished in all the learning of the time. H er mind was a perfect storehouse of wisdom and knowledge; she had read about the stars and the courses of the winds; all that ever happened in the world from the days of Adam she had by h eart; the poets and philosophers were to her what childish recrea­ tions are to others; but above all she was profoundlyversed in theology and school divinity, so that the doctors were confounded by her argumentative pow­ ers. . . .”

With her fair and glorious company of eleven thousand virgins she undertook a journey to the holy shrines throughout Europe, and was miracu­ lously conducted over the rocks and snows of the Alps by six angels, “ who went before them per­ petually, clearing the road of all impediments, throw­ ing bridges over mountain torrents, and even at night pitching tents for their shelter and refreshment.” .And in what a comely m anner did the eleven thousand meet the martyrdom which they had sought, at the hands of fierce barbarians, “ who rushed upon the virgins as a pack of gaunt and hungry wolves might fall on a Hock of milk-white la m b s!” W’hat wonder that the medieval artist suffered anxiety in

“To the Ursuline Nuns of New Orleans belongs the credit of having served first as ministering angels to the soldiers of the LInited States wounded in war-time conflict. This was at the battle of New Orleans, January 8, 1815, when they threw open their convent to care for the sick and wounded from the regiments that Andrew Jackson led to the memorahle victory on the plains of Cbalmette. In the chapel of the old cloister on Charles Street their prayers went up, during the fight, to Our Lady of Prompt .Succor for the success of Jackson’s army, and to this day the anniversary is appropriately commemorated there.”

“ From the historical point of view one of the most fascinating figures among the early converts to the Catholic Church of America is that of Esther \^’heelwright, d aughter of the well-known P u ritan leader.

Jo hn Wheelwright. She was captured at Wells, M as­ sachusetts, on August 10, 1683, by Indians of the tribe of .Ahenaquis, friendly to the French and hostile to the English settlers. She was taken into captivity near the head waters of the River Kennebec. .After six years of captivity Esther was finally purchased from her Indian captor by Father Bigot, S. J., who baptized her and taugh her catechism. In 1708 this priest took her to Qtiehec. where, being of dis­ tinguished parentage, she was received into the house­ hold of the French Governor of Canada. Placed in the boarding school of the lirsuline convent, she made her first Communion ‘with Angelic fervor.‘ and expressed her desire to become a Nun. The Governor was opposed, hut finally, in 1713, gave his consent. In October of that year Esther entered the novitiate. On April 12, 1714, she received the black habit and the name of Marie Joseph of the Infant Jesus.”

The historian Suite, in his Histoire des Francais Canadiens, finds the Ursulines to have been sufficiently well educated “ to keep intact the accent, the vocab­ ulary, and the general tone of good society.” It was due largely to their influence that the amenities of social contact were preserved in the families of Quebec.

Colby in his “ Canadian Types of the Old Regime.” “ Apart from its insistence on religion,” he w’rites “ the convent education aimed at preserving purity of speech,” (the beautiful speech of Touraine) at inculcating courage, and at humanizing the pupil through the medium of such polite accomplishments as seem suited to the needs of a young country.

“T he Frsiilines have accompanied the missionaries among the Indians and Negroes and Asiatics. They have made important contributions to the study of the psychology of colored races, written works on Indian languages and African dialects. Throughout our .Senior year, we have been hon­ ored with the presence of various distinguished guests who have entertained us with timely discus­ sions relating to present-day activities. Early in the year we were hostesses to two Elrsuline Nuns, who showed us motion pictures of the foreign missions of the Ursulines. Their accompanying talk interested the entire school and made for greater generosity in our weekly Mite Box. Soon after, the school was again assembled in the auditorium, to welcome a representative of the Social Security Board, who made clear the intricacies of the Social Security Program. Still later in the year the student body of the Academy was instilled with the idea of thrift by an interesting discourse of a member of the Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank. The speaker suggested establishing in Mount St. LIrsula, student hank accounts. The idea proved acceptable and thus far has proved successful. With the arrival of the new year, a young woman came who inspired the girls, especially the candidates for graduation, with an interest in nursing. The young woman speaker represented a prominent Nursing School in coopera­ tion with the war effort.

On December 9. we were preparing to receive Axis planes, if and when they should come. .Air raid drills became the order of the day and the routine of the Mount .St. I'rsula school day was (juickly changed to fit the reipiirements of a changed order.

Classrooms can now be evacuated in two minutes and, if necessary, all students are fortified by supplies of food and games to spend long hours in appointed places in the corridors.

Elementary and advanced First Aid training for the treatment of wounds and gas poisoning. Nutrition, and Child Care have taken the place of the teas and fashion shows of a peace-time world.

The valiant delaying action and magnificent courage of the defenders of American outposts have given .•\meriea a little more time, and God grant we use it well.

When invasion comes, we shall he prepared.

A feeling of awe at the real meaning of Christmas, a thought of our missions, a preparing of our hearts for the Divine Babe in exile, the building of the Crib in our classroom, a thought of our poor, r e ­ hearsals of our play, an eagerness to help others, anticipation of our party and joy everywhere marked the days before Christmas in all our classes.

The theater was dark and still. The curtain rose quietly and eerily; there were muffled gasps through­ out the halls. Suddenly, from the anterior of the stage, there came a piercing scream, th at set the audience on the edge of their seats. Chief among the frightened onlookers was a group of twenty-five girls representing the Senior class of Mount St. I'rsula. This large entourage was persuaded to view the presentation of “ Macbeth” by Mother Dolores, following an intensive study of this Shakespearean drama in Senior English. '

Class Day, with its usual display of color and high spirits, marked the end of the 1941-1942 basketball season. The formations were unique and the Juniors On April 11, for the first time since the last World ar. 10,000 women tram ped to the beat of military hands dowm New Y ork’s Fifth Avenue. T here were women in khaki, women in defense blue, women in coats, and women in pants. There was a confusion of uniform s and no one, not even Mrs. W inthrop .\ldrich , the marshal of the parade, could be expected to identify them all. .Some of the marching women and most of the spectators were probably puzzled about w'hat, exactly, are the duties of the women in uniform now. Significant and symbolic is the fact th at 10,000 of them put on flat heels and gave up a Saturday afternoon to march for a cause they deemed worthy, i.e.. enlisting recruits for the \o l u n t e e r N urses’ Aides Corps.

In the spring of 1942, M ount St. Ursula felt th e de­ termination of these women patriots v ho give their time and toil without pay and ask as recompense only the glory of uniform insignia. The A.W.V.S. looks upon Mount .St. Ursula as its model school, for their instructresses are now teaching weekly courses to really conscientious students. The courses include First Aid. Civilian Defense, Nutrition and Child Care. Other courses are expected to follow. W’e have only a glimpse of the great work they are doing, but the A.W.V.S. feels that, if the Academy is successful, they can count on other schools to benefit from their teaching. And they shall be suc­ cessful because the girls are truly in earnest, and the spirit of these women is finding its way to us all.

the .Seniors was never to be fulfilled, for the Juniors went down to defeat in a spirited and well-fought contest.

The Seniors in a last minute rally emerged

The Freshman-Sopho­ more game proved to be a great surprise to all, for although the “ Blue and Yellow” won, the Freshmen showed their strength and skill, and went down to defeat by one point, 13-12. Never before has a Fresh­ man team so nearly triumphed, and their playing is a great tribute to their coach, Joan Quinn.

the Freshmen staged a blackout at the game’s climax, and the Mothers had an excellent opportunity to demonstrate their recent First Aid training. Needless to say, the patient was quickly revived. The play-off game between the Sophs and the Seniors, while not lacking in color and class spirit, was not as exciting as the previous games. The Sophs struggled valiantly, but were no match for the superior skill of the Seniors who again returned the trophy to the senior room.

Patience. e met the twenty love-sick maidens in the toils of the new aestheticism of the fleshy poet. Runthorne. for whom they deserted the officers of 3.5th Heavy Dragoons. Our heroine lived in blissful ignorance of their pangs while beset by the two poets, Runthorne and (irosvenor, the living idyll, whose fatal beauty lured her as his perfection chilled her. And horror! aestheticism has invaded the army itself, and the hrightly-hued uniforms that once had been “as successful in the courts of Venus as on the fields of Mars,” were discarded by the dragoons for the aesthetic garb though they writhed in postures that they hoped would bring back their loves. Poor Patience! The knowledge that she was in love dawned upon her, and from the moment that this passion cast its blight upon her, her existence became a most excitingly interesting one. Her state was made miserable by the rivalry of the corpulent, hut ecstatic maiden, the fading Jane.

Can you forget the rapturous music which was sung rapturously— love-sick t u n e s —aesthetic tunes— sung by maidens who felt the magic message of the music— and who have cast over you the spell of their message which will stay with you through the years? The melody of eternal youth ever charms, for it is whimsical, gently satirical, and always subtly humorous.

While we frolicked about with these Gilbertian creations through all their jolly misadventures, we wanted you to be as poetical as these love-lorn poets, as martial as these splendid dragoons, and as love­ sick as the sighing maidens.

The young principals of the year’s performance, with the excellent chorus work, as indicated in the programme, gave an exhibition worth seeing. This year’s succession of rhythms, dashing measures, executed with precision and grace, and beautified by rich and colorful costumes challenged professional comparison.

The laurels of [traise were notably earned by Margery Hunter, Vivienne Thomas. Lillian Nemeth, Virginia .Mayer and Dorothy Hewson. Honorable mention: Olive .lohann and Isabel Fitzpatrick.

Stage productions of any kind are not matters of ease, and a musical presentation adds to the usual difficulty. You students know that. You remember when the first call for “ Patience” was sounded months ago. You thought it a bit premature. Aon don’t think so tonight. P erhap s you feel th at you have been hurried just a hit. Strange, isn’t it?

Strange, and yet the thing to be expected. For matters of casting, of memorizing, of adapting voice to book and music, of rehearsal, of stagecraft, and of business, are not things to be reckoned by a precise amount of labor. You must work, work some more, and be interrupted in your work by the arrival of an audience. Such is the life you have come to know.

W hat is the “ W h y ? ” of all this? Your hearts are not withholding any secret tonight. Your one desire is reflected in the gleaming faces about the hall. If, when you have played your parts tonight, on the stage or in the audience, you see a happy smile light up the faces of the Nuns who care for you so well, hear your proud parents and your friends laugh in true gaiety and deep content, see your Vocal Tutor. .Miss Winifred Marshall exult in joy and satisfaction, and find yourselves flushed with the excitement of success, all will be well with you. It is the story of how an imaiiinalivc, twelve year old won her way into the hearts of Marilla and Matthew Cuthhert of Green Gables, in the jdaee of a much desired hoy from the orphanage at llo|)eton. Anne was sympathetically portrayed by Marearel Torpey in simulated auhurn locks and ;;ennine freckles.

Her amusing interpretation of Anne’s caprices and “ joie de vivre” is evidence of her fine dramatic talent. I’atricia Ilan rah au became the briskly cap a­ cious Marilla. Matthew, gently humorous, with the sympathetic insight that made him Anne’s “ kindred spirit” was portrayed by Patricia Breslin.

The rest of the cast which included Dorothy Lannon as the understanding superintendent of the orphanage, Edwina Weisheit in the conversely stern role of the nurse, Mary Jan e Lawlor, Maryrose Sturz, and Joan O’Dwyer as a varied assortment of friendly, wealthy and helpful neighbors, respectfully, were superb. Barbara Boarman, Eleanor Eboli, and K a th ­ erine O’Gonneil played A nne’s schoolmates, and Doris Hickey and Elaine Nolan complemented the excellent cast.

Indeed, “Anne of Green Gables” was a jubilant success and a tribute to tbe Genesians, Tbespian T roupe No. 297.

Rosaries made of knotted cord, with crucifixes taken from broken rosaries, were included in an exhibit of war work being done by the Scouts. Miss Elizabeth McGiver of the Catholic Young W omens’ Club instructed sixteen Scout troop leaders in the art of making these rosaries. Nine troops have already taken up this work. In the exhibit also were scapulars made by the -Scouts for the .Scapular Mili­ tia, maps and arm hands made for air raid wardens, and items such as prayer hooks, medals, etc., collected for the Chaplains’ Aid. The meeting was the fourth in a series in the archdiocese instituted by Rev. Robert Brown to increase awareness of Catholic w'omen to the possi­ bilities of Girl .Scouting as a youth activity in their own parishes, the other meetings having been held in M anhattan, Staten Island, and Middletown, New York.

The Senior class of jMount St. Ursula sponsored the tea which followed the meeting.

At Mount St. lifsula neighborhood conference on Girl Scouting was held at Mount St. L rsu la’s Convent, 200th Street and Marion Avenue, the Bronx, on T ues­ day afternotrn, April 28. Mrs. Jtjseph Coghlan, chair­ man of W om en ’s Activities of the W a r Savings Bonds Campaign in the Bronx, and a mem ber of the Girl Scout Council of G reater New York, presided, and Rev. Robert Brown, Associate Youth Director for the archdiocese, and -Mrs. Robert C. Hickey, chairman of the Mosholu Neighborhood Committee on Scouting and leader of Troop 194 in St. Brendan’s parish, were the sjteakers.

Both schools of M ount St. Ursula sponsored the various events that have made “ Mission Day, May 9, 19-42,” a day of days. The younger patrons were attracted to “ pitching pennies,” bagatelle and similar games. .Alluring prizes and fancy sales were offered at several e.xtravagantly adorned booths. The perfect social event was the Card Party sponsored by .Mother M. Boniface 0 . S. U. and Mrs. Marcella Maher. The booth for religious articles was very successful this year. We all had hoped to be the fond parent of the attractive Mount St. Ursula doll. You might have enjoyed fancy fruits and candies, or have hoped to win the perm anent w'ave and theatre tickets. One of the most pleasing aspects of the day was the cooperation of the younger Alumnae set who joined with edifying zeal and happy cooperation in the work of their “little sisters.” The F reshm an’s mission activity, the election of the “ May Queen,” proved most successful. Dorothy Hewson, Junior, was elected Queen with Margery Gerosa, Senior, in second place.

The long, graceful curve of the road was again outlined in fragile color, as the procession continued to the long stretch of lawn, at the end of which the throne for our student May Queen had been inepared. The .Mission Leaders of each class, fol­ lowed hy the Gourt Dancers, fonned two columns on either side of the Queen’s path, as she approached.

The ladies of the court, carrying straw hats filled with summer blossoms and beribboned in maroon, escorted the Queen. They were chosen hy vote, on Mission Day, having been the candidates nominated hy fellow students, and totaling the highest number of votes after the Queen. The names are:

For three decades the Frsulines, under Reverend Mother Dominic, had conserved their precious edu­ cational heritage in a forthright eidightened and progressive way. 'Fhe rcsideni school had grown.

The nuns were reipiesled in many parts and for many undertakings.

The original foundation had been enlarged. It Itad hurgeoned and blossomed in spiritual heaulv.

However, the great melropidis, too, was lapidly expanding and its business fron­ tiers soon made their hustling iminession on the cloistered sequestration of the Acadernv. .Morrisania — garden of early sufferings, patient sacrifice, and laborious toil, as well as of the consolations (iod re­ serves for the generous hearl- -NIorrisania must be abandoned for a more filling site. On February 11.

1890, ground was broken on the present site of Bed­ ford Bark. The location seemed very beautiful and remote, having an air of undisturbed peace atop its fine hill. ‘FMounl” .St. Crsula was two years in building. One envisioned the leisure and kindliness of its graceful walks; the sacredness of its gardenshrines; the processions of nuns and students that would solemnize their observance of ihe liturgy. The community of teachers, well-trained, capable and inspiring, were dedicated by vow to the “ educalion of girls,” that is to the high endeavor of the tran s­ mission of a moral and intellectual liadition with culture, sentiment, and loyally. That their dedica­ tion was blessed under the disciplined thinking of Reverend Mother M. Dominic can he confirmed by her perfected expression of a distinction of mind, and staunchness of character that ever restrained from unwarranted complacency or indiscriminate

change. The cn-founder!;. Mother M. Rose HelfP and Motlter .M. deSales Tredow were associated still with Ke\eren<l Motlier "in the city of youth and dreams" and supported the foundation at Bedford Park with, the im petus of a lifetime spent in discerning the immense distances between the good and the best.

Mother M. Rose, a law'yer’s daughter, had been cul­ tivated in the arts and humanities in the schools of Gratz. Mollier M. de.Sales. daughter of an .Austrian diplomat, had been tutored in the Courts of Berlin an d A ienna. and later, shared classes with Princess Clementine of the distinguished House of SaxeCohurg-Goetha.

On April 24, 1892, His Excellency, Michael Augus­ tine Corrigan. Archbishop of New A'ork, dedicated the properties of Mount St. I rsula. The event attracted a large concourse of the clergy and of religious; officials of the city, prominent Catholic laymen, friends and benefactors attended the formal reception. On May .31. 1892. the .Academy was completely installed at Bedford Park and its formal opening was sol­ emnized l)y the community of seventy nuns with two h undred resident students.

The golden years of our foundation hear witness to such increase of students that St. .Angela’s Hall (19221 was a necessary addition.

Five hundred girls are now in attendance at the Mount.

The academ ic courses are college-preparatory with especial emphasis on the arts, speech, music, and athletics.

Clubs are organized effectively for purposes spiritual, dramatic, journalistic, scientific, literary and musical.

The .'sodality is affiliated with the Prim a Primaria and functions in the L'rsuline tradition as a school for leadership. The Genesians have been received as Thespian T roupe No. 297 by tlie National Dramatic Honor .Association with headquarters at College Hill, Cincinnati, Ohio. The Glee Club con­ tinues on its triumphal progress in the presentations of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas inaugurated at its inception. .A private vocal class is also established as not only subsidiary to the work of the Glee Club, but also as autonomous in tlie rendition of delightfid concerts and engaging miniature operas. Tlie publi­ cations of the .Academy students have been awarded the All-Catholic Honor Rating of the Catholic Press .Association; the First Honors of the National Schol­ astic Press .Association; and the silver medal of the .Scholastic Press .Association of Columbia Hniversity.

The faculty of the Mount are educated and formed at Catholic University, Fordham and Loyola. Rome, Beaugency, and Lille. T h eir religious culture is hegim at the Ib'suline Provincial Novitiate at Beacon.

learning; and continued throughout their profession­ al careers of service. .A monastic religious observ­ ance with an intimate participation in the life of the liturgy through the Divine Office prepares them to he less unworthy of their angelic mission in the g u ard ­ ianship of young girls.

In 193.5. a jiageant. A'erginella Adctor. commem­ orated the four hundredth anniversary of the founda­ tion of the Order. The children of all the schools of the Bedford Park I rsulines came to the Mount and were engaged in the actual presentation. During the centuries the Order had received modification and had accepted changes as the Church prescribed for the needs of the time. The most recent, and prob­ ably the most beneficial, was incorporation into the Roman I nion of Ursulines.

Bedford Park is of ancient membership therein and has been privileged to see many of its nuns serve the Union in posts of high honor. More, her nuns are serving as mission­ aries in lands a far; and her generosity maintains missions. No organization in the .Academy is as enthusiastic as that of the Mission Zelatrices, though one must give very close place to the Mount St. Ursula League founded in 1922, and today a power­ ful arm in securing the material needs of the Acad­ emy. Our great nation is now in the throes of war. .Serviarn—motto of every Ursuline girl--is the key­ note of activity especially in this hour. The .Amer­ ican AA'omen Volunteer Service has opened its Model High School Ju nio r Division with us. .Serviarn the needs of the times—as St. .Angela had foretold!

Desolation and consolation alternate in the lives of all men, but this alternation is pregnant with pro­ found significance in the lives of those consecrated to God and spending themselves in His kingdom in souls. We can conclude from these pages what ex­ treme joy and consolation and love God has for our community; the profusion of graces He has lavished on it from the very beginning and continues to be­ stow upon us.
