In a pioneering decision in June, the world’s leading industrial countries in the G7 grouping decided to recognise remanufacturing as an important part of the circular economy. The move provides the reman industry and its organisations with an important platform for promoting reman on a high political and societal level.

Founder and owner of Borg Automotive, Søren ToftJensen, was named ReMaTecNews Remanufacturer of the Year 2015 for his outstanding effort in creating one of Europe’s largest remanufacturing companies. We profile the man behind the successful business.

Reman reaches a higher level By any standards 2015 will go down as an exceptional year for remanufacturing – and we’re still only halfway through.

Within just a few months, a number of prominent reman-oriented organisations, APRA, VDA, FIRM and CLEPA, have made the remarkable achievement of placing “remanufacturing” on the agenda of the international community. As a result, the leaders of the G7 nations, including US President Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and colleagues, have committed their countries to the cause of remanufacturing as part of the global drive towards sustainability. For those outside the industry, remanufacturing has, indeed, come of age.

In Europe, the likely consequences can only be described as a watershed. From now on, remanufacturers and their organisations will be able to use the G7 final document as official certification of reman’s value to society. Now it’s up to the industry itself to capitalise on this outstanding opportunity.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, another event of similar importance has taken place: the adoption by the US Congress of legislation designed to oblige state and federal authorities to use remanufacturing when servicing fleets such as school buses, military and rescue vehicles, public transport vehicles and the like. Not only do the figures run into millions, the boost provided to the entire reman industry could be incalculable. May Europe’s politicians follow suit…

Other notable events from recent weeks include the partnership with the Shanghai consultancy, Duxes, which, in effect, will provide APRA with a representative office in the key Chinese market. Together with MEMA’s opening of a new office in Shanghai, an event from which its reman affiliate, MERA, will also benefit, this is bound to strengthen the influence of western remanufacturing in the huge Chinese market.

To sum up – reman is clearly on a high. The opportunities are there for those able to seize them.

G7 government commit to reman A major development in the history of remanufacturing. That’s how Peter Bartel, Chairman of the European division of APRA, the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association, describes the inclusion of the term “remanufacturing” in the final document from the recent G7 summit in Germany. By mentioning “remanufacturing” in the same context as “circular economy, ecodesign, sharing economies” the document, in effect, puts the seal of approval on the remanufacturing industry as an important part of the drive towards sustainability.

“This commits governments and other authorities around the world to prioritise reman alongside other steps that the international community are taking to promote sustainability,” Bartel told ReMaTecNews. “It will offer tremendous opportunities for remanufacturing.”

Resource efficiency The G7 document established the G7-Alliance on Resource Efficiency as a forum to share knowledge and create information networks on sustainability.

It promises that the Alliance will collaborate with businesses, SMEs, and other relevant stakeholders to advance opportunities offered by resource

efficiency, promote best practices by organising workshops and including circular economies, ecodesign, sharing economies and remanufacturing.

“APRA and the other organisations involved in this, ACEA, CLEPA, VMI and FIRM have put in a tremendous amount of work since the beginning of the year but it was not until a few weeks before the G7 Summit that we succeeded,” Bartel explains. “I think that it’s safe to say that without our close collaboration, we would not have been able to do it.”

Strategic study seeks industry input ERN, the recently established European Remanufacturing Network, is currently undertaking a major study of Europe’s remanufacturing industry and is inviting remanufacturers across the continent to participate. The deadline for submissions is August 30.

Organised and coordinated by CRR, the Centre for Remanufacturing and Reuse, in Aylesbury in the UK, the market study aims at mapping the current remanufacturing landscape in Europe for the first time as well as collecting information on remanufacturing practice and challenges.

“Remanufacturing is an undervalued part of the industrial landscape and an under-recognised part of the sustainable industry,” CRR stated.

“Activity to promote remanufacturing is currently undertaken at a sectoral level for some product sectors. In Europe, unlike in the recycling industry, cross-sectoral activities to facilitate knowledge transfer and promote the industry do not exist.

Our major competitors, the US and China,

already have a common vision and strategy for remanufacturing within their industrial landscape.

Therefore, there is a real need for a European-

level solution to encourage remanufacturing throughout Europe.” n

BorgWarner buys Remy International remanufacturer, and distributor of alternators, starter motors, and electric traction motors for the automotive and commercial vehicle industry.

The new owner, BorgWarner Inc. is a worldwide supplier of components and systems for powertrains and operates manufacturing and technical facilities in 58 locations in 19 countries.

Close on the heels of ZF Friedrichshafen’s acquisition of TRW, two more of the automotive industry’s famous names have announced that they have agreed to merge.

In July Remy International’s chairman, John Weber announced that the company has accepted a proposal under which BorgWarner will acquire Remy. If the shareholders approve, the transaction will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2015.

The merged organisation will become one of the world’s largest automotive suppliers.

support growing vehicle electrification trends. We are confident our customers and channel partners will benefit from the strategic fit, as it brings together two long-standing industry leaders.”

At the time of writing the consequences for the two companies’ remanufacturing operations remain unclear. Remy has longstanding interests in remanufactured starters and alternators.

UBD: Important order from Toyota

The boom in environmentally-friendly products and processes continues unabated in the global motor industry.

One recent example is Sweden’s UBD Cleantech outside Malmö, the country’s third city in southern Sweden. This long-standing reman business recently signed a supply contract with Toyota, the world’s largest car maker for an unspecified number of diesel particulate filters. Since 2007, UBD has been carving a significant niche as a supplier of its patented diesel particular filters to some of the world’s leading automotive companies.

“We have had significant success with our remanufactured DPFs in recent years and the agreement with Toyota is yet another important

step forward,” Marketing Manager Sanny Runesson told ReMaTecNews. “We’re now looking forward to building further on our extensive customer base for these components that are destined to be in high demand as the trend for clean products increases.”

The new contract with Toyota adds another global name to UBD’s current roster of top names. UBD already supplies remanufactured DPFs to General Motors, Volvo, Jaguar, Volkswagen and Nissan.

UBD’s expectation for further growth within the segment is based on several market factors. “Not only are the financial savings substantial, DPF recovery is good for the environment,” Sanny Runesson explains. “Manufacturing of single new DPF results in carbon emissions of 25.6 kg while a

reman DPF involves just 3.3 kg carbon emissions.”

Currently 60 per cent of all cars in the European market are diesel-powered and thus equipped with diesel particle filters. With their coatings of precious metals, diesel particle filters are expensive to produce so industrial remanufacture provides an economical and sustainable solution for meeting the increasingly stringent requirements for “green” cars.

UBD Cleantech AB currently remanufactures 50–60,000 diesel particle filters per year for the specified car manufacturers in Europe. The factory in Höör of 26,000 m2 is shared by Höörs Plåt and Cepa, which are part of the Stockforsa Group.

There is still capacity to grow in terms of volume and new customers. n

New CEO at Cardone Inc. Cardone Industries has appointed a new CEO. With effect from August, Stan Gowisnok succeeds Terry McCormack as Chief Executive Officer of the Philadelphia-based company, the world’s largest privately held remanufacturing business. Terry McCormack will remain in his post as Chairman of Cardone’s Board of Directors.

A former President of DST Inc., Gowisnock has a broad background in sales and marketing, engineering, and technology. In his new role, Gowisnock will further develop CARDONE’s new product innovation strategy and sustain focus on customer satisfaction, the company says.

“He (Stan Gowisnock) has built a career marked by strong relationships and brings a full complement of executive managerial experience – particularly with respect to the application of the most current technologies that will support our ‘New CARDONE 5-Year Vision’... a vision with one focus – its customers,” Terry McCormack said. n

Rallying to the cause of reman

As with other types of motorsport, success in motor rallies depends on two main factors – the skill of the driver and the quality of the car’s components. A third ingredient is cost.

The more carmakers, teams and sponsors can afford to invest, the more successful they are.

Could remanufactured parts play a more important role in rallying by making it more affordable and thus allow more enthusiasts to take part? That’s a question that one experienced figure in remanufacturing as well as in truck racing is keen to put to the test. Malte Raddaz, for the past ten years the Global PR Manager for Meritor and organiser of the group’s truck racing activities, is about to launch a new initiative aimed at promoting rallying with remanufactured parts.

The concept is unique – and very challenging – and based on detailed collaboration between industry practitioners and prominent research institutions such as universities, technical academies and research laboratories involved in educating young engineers and automotive technicians. Having received the necessary cores from industry suppliers, each of the involved institutions will be tasked with rebuilding a vehicle with maximum use of remanufactured components.

After completion, the vehicles will set out from their respective locations of origin towards their goal, the RAI Exhibition Centre in Amsterdam.

“Along the routes various challenges such as time trials and events at some of the cities and towns will be built into the programme,” Malte Raddaz explains. “This, of course, will require good skills from drivers and crews. The main objective, however, is to demonstrate the truism that remanufactured parts “are as good as new” and perhaps convince young engineers and technicians that reman offers an interesting career, one with significant benefits for society.”

Raddaz believes that reman is underestimated in motorsport and is confident that greater use of remanufactured components would serve both the sport and the industry well.

“In today’s world reman is gaining rapid recognition across the world, but there is still a lot to be achieved,” he says. “My ambition is to extend the awareness of automotive and HD parts remanufacturing to a broader audience by organising a European-wide rally event to coincide with ReMaTec 2017 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.”

Remanufacturer of the Year: From one-man-shop to European leader Søren Toft-Jensen has proved to be a genuinely entrepreneurial leader and a worthy winner of ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturer of the Year Award.”

People, inside as well as outside the business, should see that you’ll do what you say you’ll do.

Mutual respect in the workplace is hugely important.

There are not many owners who, in the midst of building up a thriving company, sell 50 per cent of their shares to devote more time to going abroad to learn more about how to run a business.

“The best decision of my life”, says Søren ToftJensen, looking back to 1995 when he and his family relocated to Houston, Texas, to acquire a broader view of the world outside his home country of Denmark. The former electrician subsequently began a Henley Management College MBA in collaboration with Houston University.

A good decision, indeed. Since his return to his home country, Toft-Jensen has repurchased his previous shareholding and has established himself as a leading European entrepreneur in the specialist field of automotive remanufacturing.

Starting out as a one-man electrical shop on the small island of Langeland, Søren Toft-Jensen has turned his start-up, originally named Elstock, into Europe’s largest privately-owned remanufacturing company, Borg Automotive, with headquarters in Silkeborg in Denmark and production facilities in Zdunska Wola in Poland, Houdeng-Goegnies in Belgium and Wednesbury in the UK.

In the process, he has taken over a number of related business activities from respected industry players, including Cardone and Faurecia, so that Borg Automotive currently employs a total workforce of well over 1,000 people, with around 60 people in Denmark (sales, logistics and administration) and with the remainder employed in UK, Belgium and Poland (production). The company sells 1.3 million remanufactured starters/alternators, AC compressors, steering racks, columns and pumps and EGR valves to the European market per year.

Achievements For these achievements, and for several others, 65 year-old Søren Toft-Jensen received ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturer of the Year Award for 2015 at a ceremony in Amsterdam in June.

“This results in our people taking pride in the way they deal with customers,” he says. “They know that satisfied customers come back for more. Our customers grow alongside us. Years ago, we realised that our quality department wasn’t growing in tandem with our sales volume, so we more than doubled the number of people in our quality assurance department, helping us to eliminate all major warranty issues. Good intentions are not enough. “ Perhaps unusual for a self-made entrepreneur – and perhaps because of the founder’s insistence on learning (for himself as well as for everybody working at Borg) - the atmosphere at the workplace has a high priority. “In this respect, my time studying at Henley College was invaluable,” he says.

“It brought home to me the importance of dealing with others in a civilised manner. As a result we place great importance on transparency and on management demonstrating integrity in all situations. People, inside as well as outside

the business, should see that you’ll do what you say you’ll do. Mutual respect in the workplace is hugely important. Everybody should realise that we all depend on each other for the business to progress, right from the production throughout the whole organisation or value chain.”

Having run his electrical workshop in the town of Rudkøbing since 1975, in 1987, Søren Toft-Jensen moved most of his business 200 miles away to the town of Silkeborg in Jutland and set up an operation with 12 employees. The intention was to establish a proper starter and alternator reman production. “However, I hadn’t realised how difficult it was to get qualified Danish engineers – they didn’t want dirty fingers – so I had to reassess the situation,” he says.

Poland As a result, Søren Toft-Jensen decided to opt for Poland for a future production site and in 1992 he opened a site with five local people.

Ever since. the curve has been upwards. In 2004, Borg acquired Faurecias AC production line for remanufactured AC compressors and was granted the licence for the Lucas brand in Europe.

In 2006, the company expanded once again by taking over a small-scale Danish brake caliper reman business from a local warehouse distributor, Carl Christensen, called CAC. The following year, he acquired yet another Danish business, Dansk Renoverings Industri, and its factory in Slovakia along with its solid customer base.

Having consolidated its acquisition, in 2012, Borg Automotive hit the expansion trail once more by acquiring Cardone Industries’ European activities in Belgium and UK. Shortly afterwards, the small, highly specialised reman company, Electro Steer (UK), joined the Borg stable.

And what’s next?

For the next few years, Søren Toft-Jensen foresees an annual increase in turnover of above the seven to eight per cent achieved in recent years. The signs are positive. Last year, Borg Automotive recorded a 15 per cent rise. Not bad at all for a business that started as a one-man shop in a distant corner of a small country in Northern Europe.

Another product line or two is also on the horizon. “But we don’t want to expand beyond our capabilities. We’ll stay within those categories where we have the right knowledge and skills.

And we want to continue to work with the same customers. They value what we do and we value having them as customers.” n

By listing their companies’ existing and future reman activities, speaker after speaker provided a broad insight into where remanufacturing will be heading in the years to come. Using different formulations but with the same general message, a line-up of senior reman experts emphasised the huge opportunities facing the reman industries as the world turns “greener”.

With more than 30 speakers at the plenum sessions plus a number of workshops, the event clearly emerged as one of the main reman conferences in Europe in recent years.

Remanufacturing is steadily moving towards the centre of the public debate on sustainability.

And that debate is increasingly becoming the key to what the world must do to secure the future of individuals, industries and countries. Without restructuring the way people live, the future is bleak. Implementing the circular economy, including remanufacturing, is therefore a key part of saving the world’s resources. This provides very substantial opportunities for remanufacturers.

The short answer, delivered in the presentations from a string of key figures from the industry, was that the outlook, both in the short and long term, is genuinely encouraging.

This was the overriding message when academics, scientists and industrialists from across the globe gathered for the fourth World Remanufacturing Summit in Amsterdam between June 16 and 17. For the 100 specialists and industry leaders attending the two days of presentations and debates there was little doubt that the remanufacturing industry’s offer is in tune with the age of resource conservation, reuse of material and, not least, it knows how to turn it into practical use.

“The world is running out of raw materials,” keynote speaker, Janez Potočnik, the former EU Commissioner and current co-chairman of the United Nations International Resource Panel told the audience. “There is no other way than to embrace the circular economy, including remanufacturing, if we are to maintain economic

Since 2012, the World Reman Summits have progressively proved their importance to the remanufacturing industry. By building bridges between the industry’s practitioners on the highest level world-wide and the world of research and science, these summits have made significant contributions to each party’s understanding of each other.

Now the concept is set to expand further. During a meeting at the latest summit in Amsterdam in June, the founding chairmen, Professors Zhu Sheng of China’s National Key Laboratory for Remanufacturing, Nabil Nasr, director of the Golisano Institute for Sustainability at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York and Rolf

ATP factory tour by Finance Minister Business and politics proved the perfect mix when a senior Government Minister visited the headquarters of ATP Group, one of the UK’s leading automotive remanufacturers.

The visit by Mr. George Osborne, the UK’s Chancellor of the Exchequer (Minister of Finance), coincided with the build-up to the UK’s recent election. The visit was designed to demonstrate the success of small to medium-sized businesses under the Conservative government. During the past five years under Prime Minister David Cameron’s government, ATP has benefitted from significant sales growth. It has recruited more than 40 staff in the first six months of this year. “I think you can say that ATP’s success story is one of the reasons that our factory was selected for such an important visit, but we also represent a remanufacturing business with green credentials operating in a global market. That’s very important for the remanufacturing industry as a whole and we like to think this was an occasion where ATP was able to help raise the profile of the UK

remanufacturing industry in the minds of some of the country’s senior politicians,” says ATP founder and chairman Alan Smart.

Alan Smart, a former winner of ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturer of the Year Award, pointed out that the company’s remanufacturing achievements had already attracted international recognition.

ATP China was recognised as the Most Popular Remanufacturer by the Shanghai consultancy, Duxes, in 2014. This year, the company was shortlisted for a Queen’s Award for Innovation.

Over the past 20 years, we have seen a revolution in engine design increasing the need for alternators equipped with a Litens OAD (Overrunning Alternator Decoupler) pulley.

Thanks to many upgrades such as direct injection and turbo charging, V8’s are continually being replaced with V6s and even inline 4 cylinders without any loss in performance and gains in fuel economy. Engine displacement and the rotating mass of the engine continue to be decreased dramatically. New electrical loads like heated seats, mirrors and infotainment systems are taxing alternators like never before. Drivers demand quiet and vibration free vehicles, however, these newer lighter weight engines have greater vibrations that need to be addressed.

It’s simple physics: Fewer cylinders make for fewer pulses during each 360 deg of crank rotation. These power pulses are much more pow-

erful than older engines thanks to the increased combustion pressures produced by the direct injection, cylinder eactivation and turbocharging strategies. These downsized engines have less mass to dampen vibration and therefore require special vibration absorbing devices.

The drive train can, in most cases, handle the increased vibration.

However the accessory drive pulleys at the other end of the crankshaft, have only limited capacity to dampen these vibrations created by the fluctuating changes in crank speed at sub idle and idle rpm. To do this the serpentine belt, tensioner and pulleys must work together as a system to dampen vibrations.

economy. To achieve harmony, most newer vehicles come equipped with alternators using a Litens OAD pulley. OADs are designed to be the sacrificial component of the belt drive system. The OAD will absorb the harmful vibrations and eliminate all the harmful side-effects. Alternators manufactured with a Litens OAD, allow for longer belt, tensioner, idler and component life while providing increased fuel economy.

Being the sacrificial component of the belt system, an OAD will require replacement during the life of the vehicle based on engine design and driving habits. Replacing the OAD when needed can maximize fuel economy and protect the other belt drive components – alternator, belt, tensioner, pulleys, etc…

3,500 visitors. 240 exhibitors. Hundreds of networking opportunities. A huge array of side events. Two global conferences on the future of the industry - all under one roof.

That’s a brief summary of the largest event for the automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing industries in 2015, the ReMaTec2015 show in Amsterdam in mid-June.

Bigger than ever before in its 15 year existence, this year’s ReMaTec event at the RAI Amsterdam Exhibition Centre in the Netherlands was literally brimming with events of interest to remanufacturers and the remanufacturing supply chain.

“Over the past few days we have done more business than at any other show for several years,” as one exhibitor expressed it. This view was not unique. Across the aisles of the two adjoining exhibition halls, exhibitors and visitors

alike reported brisk business – and a new confidence in the immediate future.

“In recent years, we’ve seen clear signs of recovery following the motor industry’s extended downturn. I believe that ReMaTec2015 reflects a renewed confidence not just in the motor industry in general but also in the remanufacturing sector in particular,” a representative from a major car maker said. “I would not be surprised to see remanufacturing entering a new and positive phase.”

The trends emerging from the show bear this out.

Booths across the show displayed new products and processes and the so-called InnovationLAB, a new initiative at RAI Amsterdam, attracted considerable interest, pointing towards a growing understanding of the need to stay abreast of technological advances in remanufacturing.

Interestingly, the evidence was underpinned by the two concurrent academic conferences,

the World Remanufacturing Summit (see page 14) and the specialised ICoR conference. Both highlighted the demand for close consultation between science-based research and the leading edge of the industry.

At the base of it all, of course, lies the rapidly rising, international acceptance of “sustainability” as the key driver for much - if not all - of what will happen in remanufacturing over the coming years. Exemplified by yet another important side event, the Dutch environmental consultancy Circle Economy demonstrated how sustainability and remanufacturing are two sides of a very valuable coin.

That message in itself would have been sufficient to consider the three days in Amsterdam in June as a milestone for automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing. As it happened, it was just one of several signs of a rapidly maturing industry with a global message. n

China keen to forge closer links with and learn from European specialists especially in terms of carbon emissions, and also the living standard of its people,” Yao Xin added.

“For that we need more remanufacturing. For us the ReMaTec show is a step in this process.”

With Yao Xin representing China’s highest economic body, the National Development Reform Commission, Weijiang Yin, the mayor of the city of Hejian in Hebei Province, came to Amsterdam to explore ways of promoting remanufacturing to benefit his city and its 800,000 inhabitants.

“We have come to Europe to learn more about automotive remanufacturing and establish ties to western remanufacturers and remanufacturing organisations. China welcomes closer collaboration with Europe and the US in remanufacturing and recognises that we have a great deal to learn from Europe and America. To meet the target for remanufacturing set out by our government we must acquire more knowledge of reman.”

Quality time for turbo businesses They talk about them in different ways but the issues that are trending in the turbo remanufacturing business right now are all about the quality of the end product.

That is one of the messages from the turbosegment at the ReMaTec2015 show. The show demonstrated that the turbo reman market is booming and the latest big player to recognise the potential that awaits those willing to invest heavily in the sector, BorgWarner, is one such player with a quality product for new customers from the independent aftermarket.

When addressing visitors during his presentation “What’s inside your turbo” in the ReMaTec Theatre in the show’s InnovationLAB, Melett’s sales director Martyn Howorth warned about the poor quality of some of the end products currently available in the industry. He pointed out that a closer inspection of some low cost and poorly remanufactured turbos in the supply chain often reveals burring on the thrust bearings, uneven teeth and the use of screws that were obviously inadequate for the job.

They are not doing the testing and that’s where investment is needed. With some earlier models you could get away without testing, but not with engines at Euro 5 or Euro 6 standard. They are a lot more sensitive to turbos that have not been calibrated.”

Entry level testing machine Turbo Technics has responded by introducing its VTR 100, an entry-level testing machine that will achieve the level of testing at speeds sought by top quality remanufacturing specialists among the medium to high producers. However, rival supplier Turbo Synthesis has responded to the issue by introducing its Benchflow 2000, a test bench model specifically for those low volume turbo reman specialists said to be emerging from Eastern European countries.

Rise in reman low cost turbo products Among the issues contributing to a rise in low cost turbo reman product options is the trend to fit brand new core assembly units inside them.

Howorth suggested that he had heard of suppliers knocking them out at $49 per unit.

Once an end user fitting one of these products starts to have problems, they approach companies like Turbo Technics for solutions. Sadly, says general manager Steve Preest, the answer is often to install an entirely different unit. The remanufacturing culture that the use of such units has generated, is creating the biggest problems.

“It’s not as fast as some of the larger machines, but if you are only remanufacturing maybe a couple of dozen turbos a day, it’s affordable and fast enough for your purposes,” says managing director Gareth Cole.

Vincent Facchini at Polish remanufacturer TurboTec says that while in markets like Romania the main issue will always be about price, in markets like Germany it will always be about quality.

Daniel Swerzy, Inter-Turbo Future focus Daniel Swerzy at Polish rival Inter-Turbo agrees, adding that the premium quality product market could well be the market to focus on in the future for smaller companies like his, where business is so good that a new 12,000 sq metre production facility has just been added to production capacity.

So, the turbo reman market booms on the back of tougher emissions laws and engine downsizing trends, but a new low cost production culture appears to be compromising quality. Test equipment manufacturers are finding solutions that might address some of these production issues but if the trend towards premium quality continues, it could play into the hands of those big OE players as they begin to dip their toes into the water. n

Knorr-Bremse brakes cover on policy A place inside the InnovationLAB (see page 20) rewarded Knorr-Bremse for more than just its achievement in developing a remanufactured version of the EAC1 unit that it first developed for OE fit over ten years ago.

After over 60 years of remanufacturing experience, the company has now assembled a remanufacturing hit squad based at its Liberec plant in the Czech Republic. It will act as the driving force for remanufacturing standards and quality for the foreseeable future. It will coordinate different stages of the remanufacturing processes previously handled by different business units.

One of the leaders of the new team, remanufacturing manager Frank Merwerth, told ReMaTecNews that the team’s overall objective is “to harmonise strategy, maximize efficiencies and ensure that lessons learned are transferred from one product area to another.” Individual product segments will retain control over the way they serve the market.

He buys into the argument that remanufacturers

of the best quality reman products often produce equipment that is better than the original, but he qualifies that response by saying: “You can do as much reverse engineering as you wish, but you will never get the same depth of understanding about a product that we have developed as its OE manufacturer. We know the specifications.

We understand which tolerances and tests are essential in order to guarantee the reliability of any safety critical parts.”

He is enthused by the team’s results, which include improvements in the amount of core materials re-used and a reduction of CO2 emissions (almost 50%) by comparison with the OE product.

The group’s plans to expand reman capabilities became clear in April of this year, when KnorrBremse’s wholly-owned US subsidiary Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems introduced an ‘all makes’ range of brake compressors. At launch, the range of available part numbers consisted of 20 from Bendix, but 100 drawn from other manufacturers. The Knorr-Bremse reman product range is currently restricted to products that it supplies as OE. To date, that comprises well over

Perhaps it’s just a question of time before it follows the sister company’s lead and introduces ‘all makes’ option, too. n

First time image boost for Rufre Diesel injection specialist Rufre is attempting to adjust its international sales image and chose the ReMaTec2015 show as the place to instigate some perceptual changes: “Our international customers often see us more as a distributor of new products rather than as a remanufacturer, so there is confusion in the market, especially outside Europe,” says Marketing Director Susana Rubles.

“We want to promote our remanufacturing brand, but we especially want to do so to the remanufacturing markets outside the EU.” The remanufacturer has been increasing its presence in the domestic market and has attracted significant interest in the Spanish business media recently.

It says it intends to increase its manufacturing capacity, but the company remains coy about its immediate plans. The company, which employs over 50 people at its Llieda remanufacturing plant on the west coast of Catalonia, has OE partnerships with the major OE diesel injection brands and has distribution outlets in more than 90 countries around the world. n

Reviving military hardware One exhibit from Meritor demonstrated the extent to which badly damaged personnel carriers for military operations may be salvaged through remanufacturing. The exhibit at Meritor’s stand came from a (very) heavy duty military vehicle damaged by a road bomb in Afghanistan which having been through a comprehensive rebuilt, was now ready for a second life in war-torn environments.

DPF opportunities over new horizons Ceramex is on the hunt for partners in a bid to set up an international network of specialist Diesel Particulate Filter remanufacturers for the passenger car market.

Its technology is already established in the remanufacturing of DPFs for the OE heavy duty markets in Europe and a joint venture initiative in the US with Springfield-based SRC has proved particularly successful.

The heavy duty market for reman DPFs is mainly centred on the OE market because DPFs are replaced at least once inside the warranty period due to the high mileages involved. By the time DPFs in car engines become clogged, the cars are already in the aftermarket, so now the UK based

company, from Slough in Berkshire, thinks the time is right to broaden its horizons.

Previous experience in DPF remanufacturing is unlikely, so it is not a prerequisite, adds Rob Rule.

“On a wider scale, we are interested in joint venture activities but we are really looking at supplying equipment for local companies who are keen to establish their own reman DPF startup operations. That might involve the supply of equipment and a licensing arrangement,” says Ceramex managing director Dr Rob Rule.

Latest release is big hit for cold spray Engine and parts remanufacturers could soon be beating a path to the door of Dycomet Europe after the Netherlands-based cold spray technology company from Akkrum announced a new high pressure machine for use with tough stainless steel, titanium, inconel and other metal alloys.

Klaas Rozema: spraying metals is easy

Cold spray technology is a way of repairing the metal surface without recourse to heat. “We use metal powder, accelerate it to a critical velocity and as a result of the very high speed, the particles penetrate the substrate, adhere to it and this

allows us to build up precise layers,” says business manager Klaas Rozema.

A low pressure system is already available for repairing softer metal surfaces made of copper, zinc and aluminium, for example, but the high pressure systems will prove very attractive for use on high value parts made of tougher metals such as turbine blades and cylinder decks.

“It’s an ideal solution for high value items when core is unavailable,” he adds. n

Cruising through ReMaTec2015 A Saturday afternoon cruise along the Amsterdam canal network might seem like an unlikely catalyst for a three-day frenzy of sales activity, but it was a chance for remanufacturers and suppliers from around the world to relax during two days of stand building ahead of the remanufacturing industry’s premier event. Revitalised Mascot poised for growth

By Denise L. Rondini “I started making coffee here and now I’m blessed to be running things,” Bill Statham jokes when talking about his time at Mascot Truck Parts. He became president when Meritor sold the company last year, but has been with the company for 25 years. And while his first job didn’t actually include making coffee, he began working for the Canadian-based remanufacturer answering phones and doing data entry.

Statham is part of a group that took ownership of Mascot on September 24, 2014 when Meritor corporate officials said they sold the company to “focus on growing in specific areas where we can increase value for our customers and shareowners.”

His interest in purchasing the business stemmed from this desire “to make sure the business I grew up in survived.” And the business seems to be doing just that. Earlier this year Mascot, Canada’s only wholesale remanufacturer of heavy truck components, completed its move to a new 40,000 square foot production and distribution facility in Mississauga, ON. The move followed a previously announced plan to increase remanufactured product availability across Canada to decrease delivery times.

“We serve an underserved market,” Statham says.

“We are the only wholesale remanufacturer that serves the dealer network across the United States; we also have some independent distributors in Canada.” Stratham says the fact that they only sell wholesale is one of the things that differentiates them from other remanufacturers.

Mascot currently remanufactures Class 6-8 manual transmissions, differentials and steering gears. The company also repairs driveshafts.

Following the purchase, Statham said the first thing he and his management team had to do was “unbuckle ourselves from Meritor”. Meritor had provided Mascot with many shared services in areas like accounting and sales and Mascot was co-located in Meritor facilities. “Meritor has been very gracious and helpful in helping us make the transition from a large corporate entity with lots of resources to an independent company.”

He adds, “I am proud to say we are independent of Meritor for all our accounting and IT and back office support. We have put a sales team together with West Coast and East Coast representation on both sides of the border.”

Old business model One of the casualties of the purchase process was that the old business model of branch locations

was not sustainable. Mascot now uses 3PLs as pick and pack warehouses. “Our business – especially when you are talking about powertrain and drivetrain components – is a breakdown business, so we have to be able to say yes when a customer needs a product.”

Mascot relies on its network of 27 distribution centres to meet its goal of getting the part in the hands of the customer in 24 hours. Statham says that in closing its branch locations and moving to 3PLs it traded infrastructure costs for additional inventory. “It is a bit of a compromise,” Statham says, “but it seems to be working so far.”

For the more popular items, Mississauga will act as the company’s hub and will supply product to the 3PL locations. “If we are short of something we also have 10 rebuilders in Mississauga who are capable of taking a core off the shelf and build it up and ship it out.”

Mascot is also focusing on improving its customer service operation. “We want our customers to be able to rely on us so they don’t have to look up the VIN or part number. We help them identify the part by a casting number or some other means to make sure they get the right part quickly.”

As for expansion outside of the U.S. and Canada, Statham says he has been surprised at the number of people who have asked if the company supports markets in South America. “I don’t think Europe is in our sights right now, but there is market opportunity in South and Central America.”

Plainfield, Ind. Move in will begin in September and will be completed in October. “We are going to have a larger footprint and be able to lay things out in a more logical manner,” he says. “It’s going to allow us to increase our capacity.” Statham says a big focus of the new facility will be on core recovery. “That is one of the things Meritor helped us with. We’ve added some new processes to our core recovery area that will help us extend the life of the cores, improve our production and turnout units more quickly.”

Statham says the management team believes in testing its products both qualifying them, along the line, after teardown, into inspection and recovery and at the end of the line. “We have increased our knowledge base and skills around root cause analysis so if we do have a failure we are able to pull a unit apart and really understand what went wrong.”

Early warning for turbocharger rivals Only a few months after Michael Boe left Meritor’s aftermarket division to join BorgWarner, the giant OE automotive group reveals a new remanufacturing strategy.

Part one of the strategy emerged on 1 July, when the brand introduced a 25 part number range of remanufactured BorgWarner turbochargers directly targeted at the aftermarket. A significant step for a company steeped in the OE and OES supply chain culture.

From 1 September, another 25 part numbers will be released. This time it’s an all-makes affair.

BorgWarner has declared its remanufacturing intentions and it’s time for some of its rivals to look over their shoulder.

It was clear to all that when an OE manufacturer hires someone with this much experience of the aftermarket and the remanufacturing business - and gives them the title of Vice President and General Manager Global Aftermarket Turbo Systems, something significant is going to take place. Now we know a little more about what and when. We also know a little bit more about the size of the task and the strategy involved.

Borg Warner’s Michael Boe: Developing an aftermarket mentality

Next level The aftermarket is not entirely a new experience for BorgWarner. A specialist division has been in place for some years now, but having acquired an executive with the right kind of aftermarket experience, it’s being primed to move upward a few levels: “The biggest challenge for an OE company is to develop a real aftermarket mentality. BorgWarner has realised this and that’s why it has established a separate aftermarket group that will think differently from the OE mentality and is separated from the OE people. Yes, we will still be joined at the hip to the OE side, but we have the freedom to do what is necessary to become a major player in the aftermarket,” Michael Boe says. Although Michael Boe says the OE side has bought into the remanufacturing approach, there is a lot of convincing and sharing of information to be done yet.

Efficiency is no.1 profit generator “We will need to become much more efficient.

In remanufacturing, efficiency is the no.1 profit generator. If you can recover core for less than the cost of a new part it is worth doing, but that’s not a concept that sits very well with the OE mentality.

There has to be a change of attitude.”

From a strategic point of view, BorgWarner has taken the most direct route into remanufacturing parts for the aftermarket.

Housed within BorgWarner’s engine group, the turbocharger business is by far its largest product group. It was already producing around 100,000 (heavy duty and passenger car) remanufactured units each year for the OES, from locations that

include Germany, the US, Brazil and China.

Michael Boe says this is a fraction of what the company could achieve if it was openly targeting the aftermarket with an all-makes remanufactured product range. However, he is aware that the transition will not be easy.

“There are three areas in our strategy that are vitally important to a successful future. These are product development, distribution and operations - in terms of warehousing, locations and remanufacturing facilities. In some of those areas we will have to build a stronger platform.”

Prospective partners He expects to recruit further remanufacturing expertise and he expects to talk to prospective

partners about certain roles in certain markets, which may include core management in some regions. He is not specific, although he rules out the notion of licensing of any kind.

BorgWarner has six business units in all, so having moved into all-makes remanufacturing on the turbo side, only a fool would expect the company to stop there. Michael Boe will not be drawn, but he agrees there is some sense in taking a close look at some of the products adjacent to the turbocharger product line. For example, in the emissions division, BorgWarner produces EGR valves as well as thermostats and other cooling products. Remanufacturing specialists in areas like those ought to take note. n

Liebherr – finding gold in remanufacturing In an assembly hall on the outskirts of Colmar, a pretty eastern French town better known for its architectural charms than for its hightech facilities, a huge excavator is nearing completion. 11 meters high and weighing 800 tonnes – three times the weight of an Airbus A380 – this enormous machine would dwarf most of the houses in the surrounding wine villages. One day soon, the huge R9800 hydraulic excavator will operate at an open cast gold, iron ore, copper or coal mine on the other side of the globe.

Yet another day further down the line, at least parts of the R9800 will return to one of the company’s facilities to be remanufactured. When a customer pays up to some million of euros for a piece of equipment, the issue of extending life cycles becomes a crucial factor. Indeed, it may constitute the difference between a sale and no sale. Through an extensive remanufacturing process, the working life of machines, like the R9800 can be extended by a factor of two or three. Considering the initial cost, this represents considerable sums - even for the largest mining operators.

That’s why the owner of the Colmar facility, the giant Liebherr Corporation, which ranks only behind Caterpillar as a supplier to the worldwide mining industry, is increasingly turning its attention to remanufacturing.

However, it’s becoming more important than ever as customers look for ways to economically extend the working lives of their machinery. Today remanufacturing can more than double or treble the life of a very expensive machine and that is obviously very important for customers,” says Stephen Albrecht, the 37

year-old Australian engineer in charge of Liebherr Mining’s remanufacturing operations.

Over the past 12 months, new facilities have opened in Australia and South Africa, with more openings planned in North America, Russia and China in the coming year.

Moreover, new agreements are expected to be put in place with new partners, for example in Kazakhstan, one of central Asia’s booming economies, within the foreseeable future.

Altogether Liebherr Mining’s reman activities comprise 12 remanufacturing and repair locations employing 250 people worldwide. These locations are spread across the world, Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Mongolia, Russia, Indonesia, Australia, USA, Ghana and South Africa.

“Moreover, by collecting and analysing component condition data captured online at the start of the remanufacturing process, we’re able to quickly respond with technical improvements and develop new components designed for remanufacturing. Mining is one of many divisions in the Liebherr Group that sees remanufacturing as a key part of its overall customer service strategy.

with the aim of signing local distributors in all European countries and key markets. Moreover, a complete online system is under construction that will enable Wilson to supply customers across the continent at the shortest possible notice. At the same time, Wilson says it is investing heavily to guarantee stock availability.

“We have discovered that there is still a demand for the Wilson brand and that the growth potential for our products is substantial,” Lewicki says. “Substantial progress has already been made in Canada, the US and now we would like to push on into Europe.”

“We’re particularly pleased that some partners and distributors who had dropped out are now coming back. Now we’re looking towards expanding the distributor network further across the globe, starting with Europe, Africa and in the Middle East.”

US Senate passes historic reman bill After several months of preparation, the US senate last month unanimously approved the most important piece of reman-related legislation so far: the so-called Federal Vehicle Repair Cost Savings Act. The Act requires “all federal agencies to consider using remanufactured parts when maintaining the federal vehicle fleet” and represents very substantial opportunities for America’s automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing industries.

“The consequences are potentially enormous for remanufacturers,” said John Chalifoux, President and CEO of MERA, the reman division of the motor industry’s influential lobby organisation, MEMA. “Not only does the Federal Government stand to save huge amounts by buying reman instead of replacing worn or obsolete parts, remanufacturers can also look forward to a massive injection of

new business while the environment will benefit very considerably.”

Bipartisan support Presented by senators Gary Peters, a Democrat from Michigan, and James Lankford, a Republican from Oklahoma, the bill now awaits the outcome of a similar vote in the House of Representatives before becoming law. This is not expected to present serious opposition, observers believe. In the House of Representatives the similar bill is also promoted by representatives from both parties, Republican Congressman Bill Huizenga and the Democrat Brad Ashford from Nebraska.

The legislation follows a 2013 report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) which confirmed the benefits of remanufactured motor vehicle parts. The Federal Government has over 580,000 vehicles in its fleet and spends

Reman legislation advances in U.S. House of Representatives In late July a committee in the United States House of Representatives approved The Federal Vehicle Repair Cost Savings Act. The legislation which requires federal agencies to encourage the use of remanufactured parts will next be considered by the full House. This means that the legislation now has a very strong chance to become law. n

ZF embarks on TRW integration The outcome of their respective remanufacturing operations following ZF Friedrichshafen’s takeover of TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. may take some considerable time to materialise.

This is becoming increasingly clear as the new giant business, the world’s third largest automotive supplier, begins to take shape. Consequently, ZF’s current reman operations and TRW’s European plant in Frydlant in the Czech Republic will remain unaffected for the time being, ReMaTecNews has learnt.

“The complete integration of TRW into ZF may take a long time,” a source told ReMaTecNews.

“The creation of a global player of the size of the merged companies is no small task. Important though reman is, any change to remanufacturing operations will probably have to wait until the full picture has emerged.”

Belgian steering specialist moves into the German market ERA Benelux, the Belgian supplier of remanufactured aircon compressors, steering pumps, drive shafts, brake calipers and more, has announced the opening of ERA Deutschland, a new subsidiary serving the German market.

“The move reflects our growing customer base in Germany. We need to be closer to our customers, not least because the market for our products is growing and because our German customers prefer service in their own language,” explains Stefaan Vandenbussche, ERA Benelux Managing Director.

STS: Investing in health and safety High class remanufacturing is not solely about product quality. It’s also about the working environment and the sustainability focus at the individual plant.

Both, of course, come at a price. That was much in evidence when Swedish remanufacturer, STS, Scandinavia’s largest remanufacturer of transmissions, recently shut down its entire production for a full day to allow employees to focus on occupational health and safety and work environment issues. The move was part of major investment in occupational health and safety as part of STS’ lean production work.

“We want our employees to feel personally committed to our shared work environment and inspire them to identify areas for improvement in the immediate areas where they work,” said Ola Stålebo, STS CEO. “Although we in the management always consider occupational health and safety and the work environment in our decision processes, the individual employees

have greater knowledge of their workstation.

The automotive industry represented at Basel Convention The so-called Conference of Parties (COPs) of Basel Convention met at Geneva from May 4th-12th this year. The Basel Convention, which entered into force in 1992, is a comprehensive international environmental agreement, that was designed to reduce movements of hazardous waste between nations and to ensure their environmentally sound management.

The Conference of Parties (COF‘s), taking place every 2-3 years, only allows States with a right to vote. Industry representatives can be registered by federations/associations and are entitled to speak.

On the agenda of this year‘s conference, a technical guideline on transboundary movements of electronic and electrical waste and used electrical and electronic equipment, in particular regarding the distinction between waste and non-waste under the Basel Convention, was due for approval. The classification of such used equipment as waste, would have a considerable impact on the repair and remanufacturing

business, especially in the remanufacturing industry, as core serves as raw material for remanufactured products and is crucial for the whole process. In many cases, core has to be collected and transported across borders.

Representatives from federations / associations of the automotive sector (APRA, CLEPA and VDA) have therefore taken charge in the discussion and have actively organised an informative side event in Geneva. This has avoided a disadvantage for the remanufacturing industry and hence ensured future transboundary transportation of used equipment. More detailed policies and procedures for ‘remanufacturing’ are planned for the following conference in May 2017. n

The European Commission has launched a public consultation on circular economy, which started on the 28th May and will last until the 20th August 2015.

The European Commission is aiming to present a new, more ambitious circular economy strategy in late 2015, in order to transform Europe into a more competitive, resource-efficient economy, addressing a range of economic sectors, including waste. The understanding of the politicians is that a successful transition towards a circular economy requires action at all stages of the value chain: from the extraction and transportation of raw materials, through material and product design, production, distribution and consumption of goods, repair, remanufacturing and reuse

schemes, to waste management and recycling.

The aim is to look beyond waste and to close the loop of the circular economy. Input from stakeholders and the public will be a key factor in the preparation of this work. The objective of this public consultation is to help the Commission to pinpoint and define the main barriers for the development of a more circular economy and to discover which measures could be taken at EU level to overcome such barriers.

The European Commission‘s Circular Economy Roadmap and Remanufacturing A Roundtable discussion with the European Commission, held in Brussels on June 5th 2015, focused on “The EC Circular Economy Roadmap and Remanufacturing”.

Kestutis Sadauskas, Director Environment Directorate-General at the European Commission, explained that the new circular economy package was due to be tabled in October at the earliest (but, in any case, in 2015). He stressed that the Commission remains very focused on waste and that will not disappear. The Commission would also be looking seriously at the issue of waste prevention. This was not an area that has been sufficiently addressed in the past. Manufacturing including remanufacturing are the sectors where DG Environment is expecting much progress to be made. The Commission is currently in listening mode.

FEDERAUTO is renamed Traxio FEDERAUTO, the Belgian confederation for the automotive trade, services and related activities, has a new name.

Following a review of its structure by an external consultancy, the confederation has decided to adopt the name Traxio as the brand for its future activities. “In the era of multiple mobility, the time has come to rebrand,” the confederation said. The name change brings a new logo, which retains the

existing, familiar colours of blue, green, white and black. The old and new logo will co-exist during a time of transition. FEDERAUTO celebrated its 20th anniversary on June 4, 2015 in the presence of the prime minister of Belgium, Charles Michel, during which the new name was revealed.

Generational change and a new board At its recent board meeting, VMI, Germany’s Engine Remanufacturers Association, elected a new board, with Ingo Königshoven as President and Rolf Sachweh as Vice-President and Treasurer.

Representing the association’s expertise and service range, the incoming board has been tasked with preparing for engine remanufacturing’s future and the challenges stemming from upcoming engine technologies as the era of pure cylinder and crankshaft grinding recedes.

In its place there will be new emphasis on • Promotion and support of “engine remanufacturing” within the framework of training mechatronic technicians • Failure analysis, documentation, failure database integration with open access to all members • New member acquisition among some 300
