Hello, FAMSA!

On behalf of the Executive Board 2020-2021, I would like to welcome you to the AMSA-Philippines Family (FAMSA). For years, AMSA-Philippines has provided avenues to promote social awareness and action among medical students. It is now more than ever that the social implications of health are highlighted because of our current situation. Our General Assembly, Sibol 2020, meaning to bloom, is centered on the growth of our organization through empowerment of our dear members. We all know that this society will not heal as soon as the disease is gone. We, future doctors, are powerful innovators. So, I encourage everyone to engage in conversations with our stakeholders, learn from each other and work together as a community.

More than the advocacies do not forget that AMSA is still family, your safe space, your support system and even beyond that. Even us, on the national level, we are here to help you grow not only as an organization but as an individual. When you root for your local organization’s success, you will not realize how much you’re improving yourself. Thank you so much for choosing to be part of this family.

Dear AMSA-Phil Members,

On behalf of the AMSA-Phil Executive Board, I would like to welcome you all in the first ever virtual General Assembly. Our theme, Sibol, stems from the meaning of growth despite what we are facing in your local organizations, in your cities, and in our country because of the pandemic and other relevant issues. As medical students, we are taught to be resilient, because after a week-long of exams, homework, and requirements--we are still reminded why we entered medicine in the first place. These adversities do not define us, but how we react to them is what defines our character.

AMSA-Philippines with its three pillars Knowledge, Action, and Friendship would like to be each and everyone’s anchor because we understand that we are in extraordinary circumstances. And despite having barriers due to lack of face-to-face, we are bringing to you: knowledge - through our capacity building with members and local officers; action - through our advocacies with each standing committee; and most importantly, friendship - through our different interactive sessions and AMSA-Fun! I encourage you to get to know more about AMSA-Phil, and I guarantee that you will fall in love, because of the people you will get to meet and motivate you to become a better leader and healthcare professional in the future.

In a few days, we will meet in the General Assembly--I hope we get to meet in person soon enough! But expect more opportunities and activities from AMSA-Phil, and I hope you also support your local organizations because you are AMSA-Phil.

about the theme

Seven long months since the pandemic started in the country and it has done nothing but expose the gaps in our healthcare system. It has been a wake up call for all Filipinos, particularly us, medical students, to have a deepened social consciousness in medicine. For 39 years, Asian Medical Students’ Association - Philippines (AMSAPhil) has continued to provide avenues for Filipino medical students to become agents of social change in pursuit for better healthcare in our country. While we are limited by the barriers from the quarantine, we are ironically brought closer together as we break the geographical barriers online.

These days we talk about resilience when we, medical students, need community the most. Sibol, meaning growth, is this year’s theme not only for the general assembly but also throughout the term. Guided by our core values, knowledge, action and friendship, AMSAPhil aims to be a reliable organization for its members as we continue to promote active participation in pressing health and social issues in our country. We amplify our efforts and serve as a platform for growth and advocacy through capacity building in transforming medical students to be physician-leaders of the future. May this general assembly empower us to #GrowTogether as #OneAMSA.

OUR international affiliations

The Asian Medical Students’ Association International (AMSA-I) is a peak representative organization for medical students from across Asia, the Asia-Pacific, and beyond. It was founded in 1985 in the Philippines, making our very own organization one of its founding chapters. It has 31 chapters coming from London, Kazakhstan, Egypt, and our fellow Asian countries. The organization holds up the tenets of Knowledge, Action, and Friendship, thus having the following flagship programs:

Biannual Conferences: East Asian Medical Students’ Conference and Asian

Medical Students’ Conference (EAMSC and AMSC);

Asian Medical Students’ Exchange Program (AMSEP) and soon the AMSEP Elective (July 2021);

Journal of AMSA (J-AMSA); and

AMSA-eNewsletter

The International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA), founded in 1951, is one of the world’s oldest and largest student-run organizations. It comprises 145 National Member Organizations (NMOs) from 134 countries, representing more than 1.3 million medical students.

IFMSA is officially recognized as an NGO within the United Nations system and the World Health Organization, and also works with the World Medical Association, among a wide range of partners.

The IFMSA structure is built on these five pillars: First, the five Regions around the world (Africa, Asia-Pacific, Americas, Eastern-Mediterranean and Europe). Second, the six Standing Committees (on Medical Education, on Public Health, on Human Rights & Peace, on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights including HIV and AIDS, on Professional Exchanges and on Research Exchanges). Third, Capacity Building oriented activities and projects to give students the tools and skills to grow as health leaders.

Fourth, the IFMSA Programs that exist to streamline these activities, campaigns, and projects on the local, national and international level. Fifth, External representation activities for us to voice out our concerns and priorities as future healthcare professionals.

IFMSA was created to impact the world and to empower its members in taking their vision and ideas, making them a reality. IFMSA brings people together to exchange, discuss and initiate projects to create a healthier world where we are able to positively impact the communities we serve. Engaging in IFMSA encourages both professional and personal collaborations irrespective of geographical, social, cultural, religious, racial, sexual and political differences. IFMSA gives its members the skills and resources to become competent health leaders, and most especially, advocates for the pressing issues that matter; for us to shape the world we want.

OUR standing committees

The Asian Medical Students Exchange Program (AMSEP) exposes medical students to cultural and academic programs in both national and international level.

It provides participants an opportunity to learn about the healthcare system and experience the culture and tradition of another country.

The Standing Committee on Medical Education (SCOME) supports active involvement in education on an individual level encouraging students to take the initiative and responsibility for their education both curricular and extracurricular.

The Standing Committee on Professional Exchange (SCOPE) offers medical students worldwide an opportunity to experience medicine in another culture and health system, ultimately making them more sensitive to the differences in healthcare across the globe. With over 232, 000 medical students who have participated, we are the largest student-run exchange program in the world.

The Standing Committee on Public Health (SCOPH) promotes the development of medical students worldwide regarding Public Health issues through an international sharing knowledge network, projects management, community-based learning, capacity building, advocacy, exchanges placements and access to external learning opportunities.

The Standing Committee on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights incl.

HIV and AIDS (SCORA) is a collaboration of passionate individuals that aim to positively impact our community through culturally respected means and interventions. We ignite and promote conversations on five areas about the importance of Comprehensive Sexuality Education, Maternal health and Safe access to abortion, Gender Identity and Sexuality, Gender-based Violence, and HIV and Other STIs.

The Standing Committee on Research Exchange (SCORE) aims to ignite in our members a passion for research, and provide opportunities for them to become grounded in its basic principles and core competencies. At the heart of SCORE is our research exchange program, a month-long research project placement wherein students can gain knowledge and hands-on experiences in research abroad.

The Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace (SCORP) envisions a peaceful world where all individuals are entitled to full and equal access to their human rights, through empowering and motivating medical students to actively promote and protect human rights.
