Ginkgo biloba Supplement on Learning

Recently, the use of Ginkgo biloba supplements has resurfaced. With the easy availability and numerous variants to choose from, the trend of using Ginkgo biloba as a study supplement has gained popularity among students. While there are many research around the plants, does Ginkgo biloba really improve learning performance?

What is Ginkgo biloba?

Ginkgo biloba, commonly known as gingko, also known as the Maidenhair tree is a species of seed plant in the family Ginkgoaceae. Ginkgo biloba is the only living species in the division Ginkgophyta. The tree is native from China and have been used in various traditional medicine and food sources.

Ginkgo biloba Supplement

Ginkgo biloba supplements are typically extracted from the leaves of the Ginkgo biloba tree. Ginkgo biloba extract taken via oral route with most of the extract is in the form of EGb 761 (Standardized extract of Ginkgo biloba) which include 6% terpenoids and 24% flavonoid glycosides.

Precautions

A common dosages for Ginkgo biloba supplements are 40 mg three times per day, or 80 mg twice daily. Generally, Ginkgo biloba is considered safe and well-tolerated. The maximum recommended dose for ginkgo extract is 240 mg per day. Mild adverse effects may include headache, heart palpitations, gastrointestinal upset, constipation, and allergic skin reactions.

Supplement Effects Performance

Known Benefits of Ginkgo Biloba Extract

Ginkgo biloba has been known to improve blood flow to the brain and act as an antioxidant. Ginkgo biloba has two main active ingredients, terpene lactones (including ginkgolides and diterpenes) and ginkgo flavone glycosides (containing ginkgetin, bilobetin, and sciadopitysin), present in varying concentrations. Studies on the benefits of Gingko biloba effect commonly used the stardardized EGb 761.

Studies conducted in animal indicate that Ginkgo biloba extract can influence neurotransmitter pathways and brain structures. In one study, EGb761 limits stress-induced corticosterone hypersecretion by reducing the number of adrenal peripheral benzodiazepine receptors in rats. Prolonged use of EGb 761 also appears to improve the short-term memory of middle-aged rats, potentially by reducing free radical production in the prefrontal cortex. Additionally, Ginkgo biloba extract acts as a free radical scavenger, shielding neurons from oxidative damage and apoptosis, thereby exhibiting antioxidant properties. (Nguyen & Alzahrani, 2023)

Ginkgo Biloba Extract Effects on Learning

A study on mice showed that an extract of Ginkgo biloba (EGb 761) facilitated memory processes, improved the acquisition and performance of a two-response sequence, and enhanced the retrieval of the learned response. (Winter, 1991). While in other studyshows that acute administration of ginkgo led to enhancements in sustained attention and pattern recognition memory. However, no effects were observed in other tests. There were also no effects on any cognitive tests after 6-week treatment. (Liu et al., 2020) In conclusion, more research is needed to confirm the effect of Ginkgo biloba extract and establish the optimal dosage and duration of supplementation for cognitive benefits.

Personally, I have gained numerous exciting and interesting experiences, formed new friendships with students from various universities spanning from Sabang to Merauke, learned about health issues in Indonesia and also abroad, and learned to serve the community during my preclinical years. For those aspiring to have a similar enriching experience as me, you should join AMSA!

Salutation People of Tomorrow!

Hello, my name is Putri Cahya Maharani but you guys can just call me Ceem. Since I entered medicine, I have been interested in this organization, AMSA. Over time, the decision to become part of AMSA was something I was grateful for. AMSA is truly a place where I found a positive environment for the development of my potential. Meeting professional people here has contributed to the development of my professional traits. Especially in a wider environment, being part of the AMSA-Indonesia National Team has made a lot of changes in me. New experiences, stories, and relationships are the blessings I find in it. If I could extend my time, I would love to continue being with the people I have met here. However, time is running out and we have to focus on our vision and mission but still live in the 3 AMSA philosophies: Knowledge, action, and Friendship.
