Cleveland’s Next Culinary Star

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Chayanne Padgett, professionally known as Chef Chay, is an ambitious young chef making her mark in the culinary world. As the founder of Chay’s Soul Kitchen, established in 2021, she has quickly become known for her authentic soul food and undeniable passion for her craft.

Chef Chay discovered her love for cooking at just five years old. While most children were watching cartoons, she was captivated by the Food Network—drawing inspiration from culinary icons like Sara Lee, Emeril Lagasse, and Rachael Ray. That early spark grew into a deep-rooted passion that continues to guide her journey today.

Currently attending Cuyahoga Community College’s School of Hospitality, Chef Chay is pursuing her Professional Culinarian Degree, set to graduate in December 2025. Through hard work and determination, she continues to refine her skills while build-

ing her brand and balancing the demands of school and entrepreneurship.

Life’s obstacles and moments of grief almost caused her to walk away from her dream, but her resilience and faith reminded her that she had people to make proud—and a purpose to fulfill. That drive continues to push her toward greatness every single day.

With a mission to expand Chay’s Soul Kitchen into a full-service restaurant in Cleveland and eventually grow into a chain of soul food establishments, Chef Chay’s vision is rooted in community, flavor, and legacy. Her story is one of perseverance, passion, and purpose—a reminder that when talent meets determination, greatness is inevitable.

Chef Chay isn’t just cooking food—she’s creating experiences, inspiring others, and proving that with heart and hard work, dreams truly can rise from the kitchen.

From childhood passion to professional purpose — Cleveland’s very own Chef Chay is serving soul, flavor, and inspiration one plate at a time.

The Brothers Behind Dreadhead Films

The visionaries behind Dreadhead Films is brothers, Julien and Justen Turner. Based in Columbus, Ohio, the Turner brothers have transformed from teenage prodigies to powerhouses, that earned them a spot on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for 2023. Their journey is a testament and witness of the power of early passion, family, and a commitment to telling storys that “speaks for the voiceless”

The company’s name, Dreadhead Films, was inspired by a transformative cultural moment. After watching the remake of The Karate Kid, the brothers were moved by seeing a young Black lead with an Afro and braids. This representation inspired Justen to grow his own hair and gave them a shared realization: they could tell stories for a living.

Justen began producing short films at age 11, formally creating the company in 2014 when he was just 12. By 2016, Julien joined him as a full partner. To fund their creative pursuits, they provided videography for local high school sports teams, then reinvested those earnings into new and independent projects.

The Turner brothers were shoved into the national spotlight in 2017 t First, Julien’s biology rap video, created for extra credit, went viral with millions of views. The brothers became the youngest filmmakers ever commissioned by Sesame Street, they produced a live-action short for the show’s 50th season. Since then, theiy have has secured major brand collaborations with global icons, including:

• Nike and Air Jordan

• Beats by Dre and Adidas

• Amazon

Despite their global success, the Turner brothers remain committed to their Ohio roots. Inspired by what Tyler Perry is doing in Atlanta, they aim to turn Ohio into a major hub for filmmaking. As of 2026, they are expanding their studio in Columbus and moving into long-form narrative projects, including their highly anticipated debut feature film. Through Dreadhead Films, Julien and Justen Turner continue to prove that location and age are not barriers to success.

Gun iolence in Cleveland Public Health Crisis

Gun violence in Ohio caused many public health and safety challenges, shown by rising death rates over the past decade, racial disparities, and ongoing debates in legislation. While according to recent data there is a slight downward trend in homicides since 2021, the state’s overall gun mortality rate remains slightly above the national average, with suicides accounting for the majority of gun-related deaths. Reports in 2025 show an increase in gun use in domestic violence cases and accidental shootings involving children. A report by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network labeled 2025 Ohio’s “most lethal year” for domestic violence homicides, counting 157 deaths between July 2024 and June 2025. Of these, 144 (over 84%) involved guns representing a 37% increase from the same time period in 2024. Guns are the leading cause of death among young people ages 1-17 in Ohio. Ohio has one of the highest rates of unintentional shootings by children in the country, a factor often linked to a lack of safe storage laws. According to wallethub, Cleveland is rank as the 10th most dangerous cities in the U.S. Cleveland’s City Council declared gun violence a public health crisis in April 2025. To help combat gun violence the city is combining law enforcement strategies like enhanced policing and technology (ShotSpotter) with Community Violence Intervention (CVI) programs, youth engagement, and treating gun violence as a public health crisis, funded partly by federal grants and a local foundation. Key initiatives include the “Cleveland Thrive” network, the RISE Initiative, a Violence Prevention Fund for grassroots groups, and a new Cuyahoga County Office of Violence Prevention, focusing on community-led solutions and root causes. Together we can make a change in 2026.

A Cleveland Pillar Building Youth, Unity, and Lasting Legacy

In Cleveland, Ohio, certain names resonate far beyond neighborhood blocks—and Romeo Barnes is one of them. Known as a tireless advocate for youth empowerment, community unity, and social responsibility, Barnes has spent years building bridges where gaps once existed. Through his nonprofit organization, Youth and Unity, and his involvement in community media, Barnes has become a trusted leader, mentor, and symbol of hope for families across Cleveland and neighboring Michigan communities.

People look up to Romeo Barnes because his work is rooted in authenticity and presence. He is not a distant figurehead—he is engaged, accessible, and deeply connected to the people he serves. His background is shaped by lived experience, resilience, and a commitment to uplifting others. As a father, entrepreneur, humanitarian, and community organizer, Barnes understands the challenges facing today’s youth because he has walked many of the same roads. That understanding fuels his passion for creating safe spaces, positive outlets, and real opportunities for young people to grow.

Through Youth and Unity, Barnes has focused on mentorship, youth development, advocacy, and community-centered events. The organization’s mission is simple yet powerful: to bring people together, encourage self-worth, and create pathways toward success. Whether organizing events, supporting families, or serving as a mentor, Barnes has consistently promoted unity over division and action over words.

Beyond nonprofit work, Barnes has extended his reach through his involvement with AMPS Magazine, a publication dedicated to amplifying culture, community stories, and voices often overlooked by mainstream media. His involvement with AMPS is driven by shared values—uplifting neighborhoods, cel-

ebrating positive leadership, and documenting impactful work happening at the grassroots level. Barnes understands the power of visibility and representation, particularly for youth who need to see leaders who look like them and come from similar backgrounds.

Through AMPS Magazine, Barnes helps shine a light on youth initiatives, entrepreneurs, artists, and community leaders across Cleveland, Michigan, and beyond. What he brings to the publication is credibility, access, and purpose. His deep community ties allow AMPS to tell authentic stories that inspire action, while strengthening the connection between media and mentorship. In this role, Barnes helps ensure that AMPS is more than a magazine—it becomes a platform for unity, awareness, and positive change.

That legacy was celebrated during “A Tribute to Romeo,” held on Saturday, December 13, 2025, in Cleveland. The free community event brought together family, friends, supporters, and local leaders to honor Barnes’ life, impact, and ongoing work. Hosted by Cheryl, the evening served as both a tribute and a reflection of the influence Barnes continues to have throughout the community.

The event featured special performances by Comedian Dirt Bag, R&B singer Artinka Teaira, Envy Jazzo, Caesar Rio & Syxx, and others—mirroring the creativity, culture, and unity Barnes has long championed. Speakers including Dolla, E Nicole, Pam, Cheryl, and additional voices shared heartfelt reflections, describing Barnes as a true leader, advocate, and humanitarian.

More than a celebration, the tribute was a reminder of the lasting difference one individual can make. Romeo Barnes’ impact is not measured only by programs or publications, but by lives touched, voices amplified, and communities strengthened. Through Youth and Unity and AMPS Magazine, his vision continues to live on—creating space for growth, unity, and hope for the next generation.

The Blueprint for Leadership in Ohio

Cassandra McDonald is not just running for State Representative in Ohio’s District 21—she’s already been doing the work. A seasoned law and policy analyst, Cassandra brings decades of experience across local, state, and federal government, with a record of legislative wins, courtroom victories, and grassroots leadership that has transformed lives and communities.

She made history as the first African American woman to found and lead an NAACP branch in both the City of Euclid and Cuyahoga County, where she issued one of the nation’s first travel advisories warning against racial profiling and police abuse. Her leadership has been recognized on Capitol Hill, where she was honored for her fight against Medicare fraud, waste, and abuse. She’s also been a national voice for justice, appearing on BET, HBO Vice, and Roland Martin Unfiltered, and is a familiar face on local news stations as a commentator and movement leader. Cassandra’s legislative impact is deep and far-reaching. She authored the Patient First Act after successfully challenging a major healthcare institution in federal court over a policy that harmed low-income patients. She has written and passed municipal legislation in Euclid, repealed discriminatory ordinances, and continues to champion healthcare reform, criminal and judicial reform, and competitive education opportunities for all Ohioans.

Her advocacy extends to the most vulnerable. She has worked extensively in human trafficking prevention, mental health and addiction services, and domestic violence intervention. This is just the tip of the iceberg of what she brings to the table. She was a regular contributor to the Call & Post Newspaper as a Legal Analyst under the name, “Legal Eagle.” She is a fierce advocate for Father’s Rights, pushing for reforms that ensure fathers who have acknowledged paternity are not forced to petition courts for visitation—unless there is documented abuse or imminent harm. Her passion for gun violence prevention is deeply personal: her brother was killed in 2018, and she now champions legislation to reduce gun-related deaths and suicides in disproportionately impacted communities. She was grassroots in criminal judicial reform, expungement legal clinics, leading rescue missions for missing children, and standing on the picket lines with unions. Cassandra’s leadership is also rooted in service to the legal profession. She served for several years as Chair, Vice Chair, and Learning Liaison for the Ohio State Bar Association (OSBA)—a statewide organization composed of attorneys, judges, and legal

professionals dedicated to advancing the legal profession, promoting justice, and providing continuing legal education. Her work with the OSBA reflects her commitment to legal excellence and professional development. She received recognition by the Maltz Museum for her pro bono work in legal clinics.

She is also the founding president of the LAWRS Fou ndation, which launched the Legal Navigators program, a community-based initiative that helps individuals understand and access the legal system. Her civic engagement includes serving on the Board of the East Cleveland Public Library, participating in ACLU Civil Rights Training, and contributing to national reform efforts as a board member for Criminal Justice Reform in Atlanta, Georgia.

Cassandra’s platform is bold and comprehensive. She pledges to support small businesses, drive economic development, strengthen public safety, ensure fiscal sustainability, expand public transit, increase affordable housing, tackle blight remediation, and modernize zoning and land use policies. But more than anything, she wants to be a true voice for her constituents—guided by their needs, grounded in their realities, and committed to delivering results.

“I’m not here to tell people what they need,” she says. “I’m here to listen, to learn, and to legislate with them—not just for them.” Cassandra prides herself on being well ahead of the game, with legislation already drafted and coalitions already built. “I’m ready to hit the ground running the moment I’m elected,” she says. And if there’s one thing we know about Cassandra McDonald, it’s this: she’s already almost at the finish line—pulling the rest of us forward with her.

Cassandra is a graduate of Cleveland Marshall College of Law, and the Maxine Levin College of Urban Affairs, and was an Ashbrook Scholar at Ashland University in Political Science. She studied Applied Politics at the Distinguished Akron University Bliss Institute.
