HISTORY EVERYDAY… The Afro Set
The Cleveland Afro Set was a Black nationalist group right here on Cleveland, Ohio, during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Afro Sets were founded by Harllel Jones the organization focused on self-defense, self-help, and Black empowerment. Not to be confused as a spin off of the Black Panther Party the truly set up to help the community. They had a strong presence in the Hough neighborhood and opened multiple businesses in the community, including a theater, clothing stores, a nursery, and more. classes in Swahili, Black history, were also offered for the community. The Afro Set established community patrols to address issues like police brutality, prostitution, and drug dealing in their neighborhoods. The organization also practiced and taught self defense and many times you could find the Afro Sets doing drills across the city.
The Afro Set received a lot of support from Mayor Carl B Stokes who was the first black mayor of a major city. The formation of this group was to help melanated neighborhoods like Hough to establish them selves as strong independent communities. With negative press because they were very vocal about police brutality and shady politics and preconceived ideas about the Afro Set the organization was active until the late 70’s but had a great impact on they melanated neighborhoods throughout Cleveland. Harllel Jones went on and continued to help as and activist and councilor throughout the years.

According to records he has been missing since June 17th 2023, he was 15 at that time. He was last seen by his Mother, Sheric Snowden on Fleet and Gertrude Ave in the Broadway - Slavic Village area wearing black jogging pants and a t-shirt. Dancing Through the Darkness
My name is Christina Renay, but in the dance world, I go by Goldie Loxx. I’m proud to call Columbia, South Carolina my home. My love for dance started early—back in elementary school, when my friends and I created our own step team. I’ll never forget the rhythm that brought us together: “stomp, stomp, clap the beaty beat!” We practiced it daily, not realizing then that we were laying the foundation for a lifelong passion. Dance stayed with me through the years—from school performances all the way into my career as a teacher. It wasn’t until I began posting videos of my dances on social media that things really shifted. A friend saw my posts and invited me to S Bar—and I’ve been dancing there ever since.
That invitation came at a pivotal moment. I had just become a single mother again, trying to navigate heartbreak and uncertainty. Dance became my therapy. It pulled me out of depression and healed parts of me I didn’t even know were broken. It gave me purpose, joy, and a powerful reminder of who I am.
Now, I live to create new choreography, teach both old and new dances, and share laughs with my family. I see myself on stages across the country, making people smile and feel the power of movement—until the day my body tells me to stop.
The line dance world is a beautiful, inclusive community filled with people of all ages and backgrounds, united by rhythm and love. I’ll forever be grateful to my dear friend Angelica Santiago for introducing me to this life-changing world. Thanks to her—and to dance—I found light again.
