Welcome to St Bede’s House!

I am delighted that you have chosen St Bede’s House! I can’t wait for you to join us in September and hope that this booklet helps to give you some information about life in St Bede’s House. I hope that it helps to answer some of the important questions which I am sure you will have.

St Bede’s will be your home during term-time, a place where you can relax and be yourself, a secure environment in which you will be able to explore your strengths and learn from your mistakes. Together, the aim is to create a familial atmosphere within the House based on the ‘good zeal’ which St Benedict says: All must foster with fervent love. They should each try to be the first to show respect to the other, supporting with the greatest patience one another’s weakness of body or behaviour, competing in obedience to one another. No one is to pursue what he judges better for himself, but instead, what he judges better for someone else. (RSB 72:3-7) St Bede’s strives to be more than just a House; it is your home away from home. We aim to provide a happy, secure and caring environment for each of you to develop and maximise your potential in whatever way that may be.

Each member of St. Bede’s has their own passion and interest, and everyone is supported by a fabulous House team; everyone is encouraged and supported to flourish in their own way.

Like any home or community there must be some basic rules and guidelines which help in the smooth running of the house for the benefit of all. These are set out in the remainder of this book, along with some background to St Bede’s. If you have any queries or concerns, please do get in touch; our contact details are given at the back of this booklet.

St Bede c. 672 – May 25, 735 St Bede – also known as the Venerable Bede – is widely regarded as the greatest of all the Anglo-Saxon scholars. He wrote some forty books on practically every area of knowledge, but most of his writing was on theology and history.

The Venerable Bede was probably born in Monkton, Durham, and by the age of seven he had joined a Benedictine monastery at Wearmouth. In 682 he moved to Jarrow. By the age of 19 he had become a deacon and was promoted to priest at 30.

Although eagerly sought by kings and other notables, even Pope Sergius, Bede managed to remain in his own monastery until his death. Only once did he leave for a few months in order to teach in the school of the archbishop of York.

His writings in Latin fall into three main groups: grammatical and scientific; exegetical; and historical. His most famous contribution to historical writing is his lively account of the conversion of the British, entitled Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum. The work was completed in 731. As an early historian, he is admired for his exhaustive collation of evidence and accounts and recognised as a proponent of verification wherever possible. For his contribution he earned the title ‘Father of English History’.

Bede died in 735 praying his favourite prayer: “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As in the beginning, so now, and forever.”

And I pray thee, loving Jesus, that as Thou hast graciously given me to drink in with delight the words of Thy knowledge, so Thou wouldst mercifully grant me to attain one day to Thee, the fountain of all wisdom to appear forever before Thy face.

Day girls will be given their own space to work in and to store their essential school items.

Whether you are a day girl or a boarder, you will always be expected to keep your area tidy!

What to remember: ✓ Hand in pocket money so it can be kept in the House safe ✓ Hand in passports (overseas students) to be kept in the House safe. ✓ Ensure House staff are aware of any medication/health issues. Hand in any medication. ✓ Make sure all bags/trunks are unpacked and stored in the correct place.

What shall I pack?

The Ampleforth dress code is outlined at the end of this booklet. You will be expected to maintain a high standard of dress and the key word at all times is ‘modesty’. Tight trousers in the hipster style are not allowed along with bare midriffs, cleavage, ripped clothing etc.

Jewellery and make up should be discreet and hair kept clean and tidy and a natural colour.

Failure to follow the dress code can result in a sanction from the Headmaster’s department.

In the house you may wear more casual clothes at the end of the school day, but modesty should still be the watchword regarding appearance. On Sunday you will be expected to wear a dark suit (Navy, charcoal/black/pinstripe), white blouse (stiff collar) and smart low heel shoes. Suit skirts must be matching the jacket. Skirts must always be knee length and no stretch fabric. Trouser suits must be a tailored fit. Please try to be sensible with the amount of clothing/luggage you bring, there is limited wardrobe space and rooms can become untidy very quickly!

Night attire sufficient for 9 days, dressing gown and Slippers Underwear sufficient for 9 full days (the school wash collects our house’s laundry once a week on a Monday and the clean washing arrives back on Wednesday so everybody needs at least 9 days worth of underwear) this should include white or pale bras, black socks, knickers and black or flesh coloured tights for school wear.

Footwear Two pairs of black/navy school shoes – The girls will be doing a lot of walking between classes and in the rain so shoes may need to be rested to dry out so it is advisable to have two pairs. Some styles of shoe are not suitable as they can damage the feet if worn for a prolonged length of time (e.g. Ballet pump). Loafer style or lace ups are preferred. No canvas shoes. Sixth formers may wear brown shoes (not suede).

Please be aware that for DT and Science ballet style pumps and canvas cannot be worn as they do not safely cover the whole foot.

Two supportive pairs of trainers – no flat ‘baseball’ type trainers for sports (though girls may wear them during free time); the students need to keep one pair of trainers for use on the indoor courts and one for outside sports.

Walking shoes/pretty shoes/astro turf boots and finally Wellies – the most essential of the essential items.

Other Items

✓ One named duvet & duvet cover. We provide bottom sheets, pillows and pillowcases but your daughter may prefer a matching pillowcase to go with her duvet. Most duvets can be ordered on-line and delivered directly to houses for the start of term. ✓ Wash kit and toiletries, 3 bath sheet towels, 4 hand towels ✓ Black, gold, silver or tortoiseshell hair clips and bands for school ✓ A small padlock & key for lockable wardrobes, cupboard & tuck box ✓ Laundry bag – we offer a named sock bag for knickers and socks (this will be added to school bill) ✓ Umbrella ✓ A hockey stick and hockey/ football boots, shin Pads, tennis racket (buy low cost equipment to start with – these can always be upgraded if your daughter competes at a high level) ✓ A covered hot water bottle ✓ A desk lamp and alarm clock ✓ Shoe polish & brushes 7

Hopefully this item will not be essential but sometimes girls need a familiar face at the beginning of term. A nightlight for those a little worried at night. ✓ A mug/cup We want you to feel at home whilst you are boarding with us and would suggest that you bring photos and posters to decorate your walls with. Fairy lights are permitted but they must be battery operated and not plug in to the mains. Don’t forget your favourite cuddly toy too! A reminder that during the big holidays, Christmas, Easter and Summer, the girls must move all their belongings out of their room as guests often use the boarding accommodation in the holidays. Girls must be mindful of this as they can only store one suitcase or trunk in the attic during the holidays, all other things must be taken home.

Money and Valuables You will need pocket money at school as there is both a school and House tuck shop; you can also go to the village shop and order pizzas at the weekend. Any larger purchases like games kit or books can be paid for with a chit – a slip signed by Mrs Muckalt or Matron that can be taken to the school shop and is charged to your termly account. As a rough guide, £10 per week should be enough, especially for junior girls.

All money should be left with Mrs Muckalt in the House bank for safe keeping. This can then be taken out after morning prayers. Amounts of money over £10 should not be carried around school or kept in your dormitory.

Each girl pays £25 (approx.) to the house each term; this amount is put on your school bill.

This money is used to pay for newspapers, magazines, birthday cakes, DVDs, socials etc. I am able to advance girls money for things like train fares and taxis for University interviews and these loans are recouped on the school bill. I will always contact parents or guardians for permission if these loans exceed £25.

It is recommended that a minimal number of electrical equipment/items are brought into school. Games consoles should be left at home. Laptops and mobile phones should be insured through personal plans or included on home insurance policies as valuables are not covered by the school insurance. All computers and phones left unattended should be kept locked with a password. It is also sensible to avoid leaving expensive items lying around in communal areas.

Passports and tickets for travel should be handed to Mrs Muckalt upon arrival at Ampleforth for safe keeping.

House Staff As well as Mrs Muckalt, Matron and Fr Chad (the House Chaplain), each girl is also assigned a tutor who will be responsible for monitoring her academic progress. A weekly tutorial period is held for discussion in tutor groups. Tutors can be contacted directly should your parents wish to discuss or consult on academic matters.

Each tutor also shares in the duties of the House, including oversight of lunchtime, prep and bedtime one night per week.

House Chaplain: Fr Chad Boulton OSB Email: chad@ampleforth.org.uk The chaplain of St Bede’s plays a vital role in the spiritual welfare of all in the house. Fr Chad will celebrate Mass in the House during the week and is available for spiritual guidance whenever needed. Fr Chad has been a monk for over 25 years and has run the Chaplaincy at Ampleforth for the past ten years. He is fantastic!

She has responsibility for all the domestic arrangements in the House and will organise appropriate care if you are ill, help with organisation and always be there for a cup of tea and a chat!

House Monitors House monitors will represent St Bede’s and help define who we are. Their influence is crucial and it is expected that they set a good example in a balanced approach to academic, sporting, spiritual and social aspects of life at Ampleforth. Most importantly, the girls of St Bede’s should thrive to be compassionate and assertive, kind and independent.

I am thrilled with our House Monitors for this academic year and have already had the privilege of working with the at the end of the Summer Term. I know that they will make you all feel welcome and a part of the house.

Contacting Home All students are provided with an email address which can be accessed from any of the student computers in the school, including the computers in the house.

There are two public payphones in the house: 01439 766003 External & Incoming calls 01439 766002 External only We ask that parents and friends do not ring on the pay phones after 21:00.

The House address is: St Bede’s House Ampleforth College York Y062 4EX Most students have mobile phones which may be used although the reception at times is poor. I ask that all girls take care of their phone and use it appropriately. You must not use your phone in lessons or during prep time, if you do so your phone could be confiscated for up to a week.

First and Second Year girls are expected to hand their phones in at bedtime until after lessons the next day. The House has good WIFI which switches off at 10:30pm and has firewalls enabled. The use of VPNs is strictly forbidden and will result in sanctions.

For other years, all phones are to be switched off through the night: this prevents girls from texting/being texted overnight. Therefore, it is essential that they bring an alarm clock rather than relying on the alarm clock function of their phones. Mobile phone top-ups are available from the Abbey Shop.

Homesickness Don’t be surprised if you feel homesick in the first few days and weeks. Everyone experiences this to a greater or lesser degree, and it is better to admit it than to try and cope with it on your own. Remember that there is plenty of sympathetic support available. Do go and talk to someone: your housemistress, assistant housemistress, tutor, chaplain, matron and junior mentor will always be available, and you can, of course, talk to anyone else you choose including the school counsellor Mr Allistone.

Medical Care at School Lori (Matron), is normally in the House between 8am and 5pm on weekdays. It is Ampleforth College Policy that all medication brought in from home is handed in to Matron or the College Infirmary. This includes vitamins, homeopathic, herbal and complimentary remedies. All prescribed medication should be labelled with the student’s name and the prescribed instructions. A letter from the prescribing doctor is also required.

Paracetamol, ibuprofen, cough medicine, strepsils and other homely remedies are all available from Matron and at the College Infirmary. There is no charge for these medications and the College would prefer that you do not give your child these medications to bring back to school.

The school infirmary is just down the hill from St Bede’s if girls are feeling unwell or are injured, although girls should always talk to Matron, Mrs Muckalt or the tutor on duty before going to the infirmary.

In the event of illness, either Mrs Muckalt or Matron will make the necessary provision via the infirmary, including a doctor’s appointment if necessary. Parents are informed either by email or phone if girls are kept in the infirmary overnight for any reason.

Safeguarding Your safety and happiness are very important to us. You will get to know a broad range of staff who you will form positive relationships with and who you should feel comfortable talking to if you have a problem or concern. Usually this will be members of your House Team such as your Housemistress, your Assistant Housemistress, your Matron, your Tutor or your House Chaplain. There is also a central designated safeguarding team who you are always welcome to speak to also.

The routine can change from time to time depending on activities and the seasons but you will be told of these in advance. There are no lessons on Saturday afternoon (only morning) as all students are involved in Games fixtures or activities. On a Saturday all students are to be back in houses by 10:15pm. There are different curfew times for juniors and seniors.

Weekends On Saturday afternoon after morning lessons and a cafeteria lunch, you will be involved in sports; either training or representing the school in fixtures.

Saturday evening is the main social time of the week. There are regular social events, cinema trips, quiz nights and similar organised events either within the House or amongst a few or all the Houses. If there are no other social events on that evening, girls may choose to buy a pizza and watch a film on Netflix.

On Saturday and Sunday evening, Sixth Form students can go to the Windmill social centre where they can purchase a couple of alcoholic drinks along with a meal. Drinks are purchased using a swipe card that is charged by parents through the school accounts department. This ensures that the students cannot purchase more than their allotted number of drinks in one evening.

On a Saturday night Sixth Formers must be back by 10:15pm and on Sunday they must be back by 9:30pm for prayers. Junior years’ curfew at the weekends is 8pm in the winter and 9pm in the summer.

I am always pleased to welcome parents when they visit. Coffee is always available in the study after Mass on Sunday.

Going Out with Families The guidelines concerning going out with families at weekends are set out in the parents’ handbook and should be consulted. As a rule, three- or four-days’ notice is requested (by Thursday at the latest) and you should be back in the House by 10:15pm. If girls are staying out overnight with their parents then they must be back in time for Sunday Mass in the morning. Parents then often take their daughters out for Sunday lunch and girls have to be back in the house in time for Prep at 5pm.

The more notice we have of parents’ visits the better; an email to Mrs Muckalt in advance is always helpful so we know where everyone is. In addition, it is particularly important that there is plenty of notice if parents are taking out some other students for dinner or lunch.

There is a form to complete on the Parent Portal with contact details and timings etc which then need to be passed to the parents of the students being taken out for permission. At birthday parties a maximum of eight school guests are allowed, and it is important to remember that school rules apply even though the girls are not on school campus.

Housemistress/Housemaster Permissions In the normal course of boarding school life your child’s Housemistress will give them permission to leave the campus. This might be for a shopping trip to the village or elsewhere or for other routine expeditions of an educational, social or sporting nature. Housemistresses also give permission for your child to go out with other parents. While these parents are given guidelines to ensure the Ampleforth Code is followed, the college does not have direct control over these occasions.

If a student is seeking permission for absence involving an overnight stay, other than a school activity, the Housemistress will seek your permission.

Please contact your child’s Housemistress if you are not happy to consent to this protocol or if you have any other questions.

School Rules on Smoking and Drinking Students in the First (9), Second (10) and Remove (11) years are not allowed to have alcohol at any time whilst they are at school. Sixth Formers are allowed a couple of drinks with a meal at Windmill at the weekends. They are also allowed a couple of drinks along with food at House socials put on during the week from time to time.

If girls break these rules by drinking too much or drinking when they shouldn’t be, they will be disciplined according to the school’s policy on alcohol. If a girl is deemed to be seriously drunk, then she might be taken to the infirmary to be looked after there. This will automatically result in a school suspension. Either possessing or being found to have drunk spirits automatically results in an external suspension.

Smoking at any time is against school rules and persistent smoking can lead to serious disciplinary issues. The school and the House have a zero-tolerance approach to smoking.

Laundry There is a fully equipped laundry room with washing machines and dryers for any items you do not want going to the main College laundry. Please ensure all clothing and linen is clearly named. Matron will collect laundry items on a Monday evening ready for the Tuesday collection.

Meals All meals may be taken in the school refectories, and formal lunch for the House is taken there every day. In addition, there is a kitchen in the House. Bread for toast and sandwiches is always available along with milk, coffee/tea, squash, cereals and various spreads. Treats are quite often provided by Matron including home baking which the girls are invited to help with.

NUT FREE POLICY We have several nut-allergy sufferers in St Bede’s. For them even the slightest contact with nuts or nut products will cause a severe physical allergic reaction which can be life-threatening.

For this reason and to ensure that we provide a safe living environment for these individuals all nuts or nut products are forbidden in St Bede’s.

Visiting Other Houses Visitors are welcome to St Bede’s, though they should first sign in with the Housemistress, Asst. Housemistress, Tutor or Matron. Likewise, you may also visit friends in other Houses during free time. Boys may visit the public areas of girls’ houses and vice versa, though they may not visit their rooms. In St Bede’s the public areas are the study, kitchen and the ground floor common room.

Health and Safety in the House You must keep your room/part of the dormitory tidy and free from litter. Furniture should not be moved in the rooms as everything has been placed carefully where it should be.

You must not fix anything to the walls except on the pin boards provided in each room.

Modest posters can be put up but must be taken down at the end of each term as this is part of the letting agreement for the holidays. Every girl is expected o take responsibility for the public spaces in the House, helping to create a tidy and homely environment. In addition, Matron regularly comes around and checks each room in the House.

As part of this a weekly fire check is carried out. All electrical appliances must be PAT tested before arrival, or this will be undertaken when you arrive at school and charged to your account. Every study desk has power points and these can be used only for personal computers, lights and stereos. Under no circumstances should students bring in other electrical items such as televisions, toasters and kettles. Students have access to these in the House.

You should familiarise yourself with the escape routes and fire procedures of the House.

Regular fire drills are carried out each term.

Juniors are not allowed to go into Sixth Form rooms unless they have been given permission.

Similarly, Sixth Formers should not go into the junior dorms unless on duty or if they have asked permission from Mrs Muckalt.

The Religious Life of the House Life in the House is underpinned by the Catholic and Benedictine ethos of the school, and serves to support the spiritual, moral and intellectual development of students as set out in the school’s mission statement. The Rule of St Benedict has provided the inspiration for many schools over the centuries and at Ampleforth we aim to share in that same tradition of, ‘establishing a school for the Lord’s Service’ (RSB Pro45) ‘Respecting other Christian traditions, and the consciences of all, we seek to live out our faith in our daily life together, in such a way as to promote the good of each individual and wellbeing of our community as a whole: it is, we believe, the normal, daily rhythm of our life together in all its variety that provides the basis for personal growth and good behaviour.’

Since the Rule and the Gospel guide inform life in the school, an acquaintance with these will in turn enhance life for those in the House. Of prime importance, therefore, are Morning and Evening Prayer, as well as regular Masses in the House, the annual retreats, opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation together with other religious events.

As a House we also support the school’s charity, FACE-FAW and students are invited to be involved in pastoral activities and retreats for students from other schools.

On Sunday morning the house gathers at 09:30 for a brief check-in before all walking down together to the Abbey Church for Mass at 10:00. Please do invite your parents to come and sit with us at Mass if they are visiting.

Sunday Lunch is taken together as a House and prep on this day is from 17:00 till 19:00.

Prep Times Prep is undertaken in the house library or your own room where you are able to work quietly and undisturbed. During study periods you will work in Big Study or if a 6th former, you may work in the house library, school library or in your room, whichever is more convenient.

Music is allowed but only if wearing headphones; others may not appreciate your taste (or more importantly, not able to work effectively).

Tuck Shop & Tesco’s During most weeks a Tesco order is made and the girls can make requests for items to be added to the tuck shop. Girls may also order individual items which they can pay for with their own pocket money. Refrigerated items are named on arrival and stored safely in the house fridges. The delivery is made to us as Tesco will only deliver to adults, not students directly. One delivery a week helps to minimise the impact of the delivery charge.

Quiet Time The routine at Ampleforth is very demanding, and so it is extremely important that everyone in the House gets sufficient rest and sleep. Out of consideration for all, everyone should be in her own room and quiet by their year’s bedtime. All must be quiet by 10:15pm. Similarly, early risers are asked not to disturb others before 7:00am. Headphones are a must for listening to music.

Matron’s Games Kit Advice When you order your games kit at the school shop before the start of the year it will arrive at Ampleforth in time for the start of term. All items are labelled in school, All girls will need to buy the red & black Hoodies but should not be tempted to deface them by ripping them at the neck as the games department will send girls straight to the school shop to buy another one at cost.

All Girls should have a mouth guard for Hockey, if they go to a games session without one, they will not be allowed to participate. A basic mouth guard is can be purchased from any high street sports shop and are also available at the school shop for £3. The games department also organises a dentist to visit the school in the second week of term to fit students with professional mouth guards which cost between £28 and £70 depending on the dental work which they protect. There is no pressure from the games department to have a dentist fitted mouth guard.

Matron’s Notes (very important) Please do not let your girls come to school with any items which they would grieve to lose – please do not let them bring jewellery with either sentimental or intrinsic value and please do not send them with delicate clothing! The school wash does not agree with delicate clothing.

Check that all clothes you send can be tumble dried. Please NAME everything!!!!

Also, be advised that the shop bought iron-on name tags come off in the school wash.

However, biro on a label is quite effective. But sewn on material name tapes are the best.

Posters with inappropriate language or lewd images on.

Kettles (there is a house kitchen where girls can always get boiling water)/mini fridges Decorative rugs Tuck which requires refrigeration. No dairy/meat/ salad/fruit etc. is allowed in the rooms.

Chewing gum

Please do encourage your daughters to bring posters and photos to decorate their walls and notice boards.

Mobile Phone Policy

Year 7 & 8 students may only use their mobile phones to contact home between 7.15pm and 8.15pm each day. At all other times the phone will be kept secure by staff. Day pupils are not permitted to bring a phone into school.

Year 9 & 10 should leave their mobile phone in the boarding house during the school day under the supervision of their House Parent. Phones will be handed in during prep, and overnight.

Year 11 should leave their mobile phone in the boarding house during the school day. Exceptions to this are the week before and during school and public exams when they will follow the y9 and 10 rules.

Year 12 & 13 students may carry a mobile phone with them, but during lesson times, house time and whilst they are eating lunch, they may not use their mobile phones unless directed to by a teacher.

They may use their device for College-related work during study periods in line with College expectations, whilst respecting Blue Zones.

Note: additional restrictions may be agreed with students on an individual basis; additional restriction may be enforced during examination periods.

For all:

Purpose: To create spaces which limit mobile phone usage, promote respect for others, selfawareness and mindful presence. No devices should be used in these spaces.

Purpose: To create spaces where students can drop in briefly and use their devices for learning, communication or personal organisation.

Students can use their devices without permission for short periods in these spaces.

These spaces should only be used at social times, not during lesson times or study periods.

A negative AP will be given.

Third offence: Confiscation. A School detention for second offence. The detention will include reflective tasks to promote respectful and healthy choices about mobile phone usage.

Fourth offence: Confiscation. Saturday detention spent on further reflective activities.

Fifth offence: Confiscation. Deputy Head will meet with the student as soon as can be arranged. The student will not have their phone returned to them until this meeting has taken place, and the College reserves the right to ban mobile phone use for a period of time.

Arrangements for confiscation: The confiscated phone will be put in an envelope by the member of staff with the name and house of the student on it. This will be deposited in Reception. The confiscated phone is turned off by the pupil and collected from Reception at the end of the day (5pm). If confiscated in house the phone will be kept by the HsM for 24 hours.
