Sports Scholarships

Sports Scholarships

Striving for excellence is an integral part of life at Ampleforth College and this is no different in the sporting arena. Our Sports Scholarship programme is focused on developing pupils across a wide range of sports and age groups. An Ampleforth College sports scholar is a talented, driven sportsperson with the focus and commitment to aspire to improve at every opportunity. We aim to support those individuals in providing a stimulating and challenging environment, which will in turn assist them in realising their sporting potential. We welcome conversations and applications from students who wish to improve not only themselves, but others around them.

Sport at Ampleforth

Sport is and always will be a huge part of life at Ampleforth College and we pride ourselves on the ability to perform across many different sports to the highest level. Inclusion and enjoyment are fundamental to our sporting ethos and all students are encouraged to represent the school in sports fixtures from Year 7 to Year 13. Ampleforth’s record of sporting achievement is extensive and we aim to continue this through our Sports Development and Scholarship programmes. With top class facilities, over ten hours per week of dedicated sports time for all students, and a body of highly qualified internal and professional coaching staff, Ampleforth is the ideal environment for Sport Scholars to thrive, be happy and release their potential.

Building on an established relationship, Ampleforth has become the North Yorkshire hub for Yorkshire County Cricket Club (YCCC) Performance Pathway boys’ winter training and for boys’ and girls’ summer fixtures. The College will also host a professional Women’s 1st XI fixture and squad training sessions. Our Sports Scholars will benefit from coaching sessions from professional YCCC players and coaches.

Expectations of our Scholars

Scholars are expected to show full commitment to their bespoke sports programme as outlined by the Head of Sport, to represent Ampleforth in competitive sports teams, and act as ambassadors for their sport and school. Senior Scholars are also expected to be sports leaders within the College and contribute to the development of younger students by helping with sports activities. Sport Scholars should maintain a portfolio of all their sporting achievements and progress. Scholarships are monitored and the appropriateness of the award is reviewed annually should students fail to continue to meet these standards.

Bursaries

Those in need of financial support are encouraged to apply for means-tested bursaries. The award of a scholarship is a very strong indicator of a student who is likely to flourish at Ampleforth, and it can be extremely helpful in supporting a bursary application.
