The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on young people in education across the country has been severe, we are proud that the children at Ampleforth College have been so resilient and adaptable during this time. Our priority is to help them rebuild their community by supporting projects that will enrich their daily experience at school.

It is for this reason that we are launching our first Annual Fund Appeal. This fundraising effort will invest in projects that have an immediate impact on the girls and boys in the school. We have been listening to your children, understanding what matters most to them at Ampleforth. This produced a varied and often imaginative long list of projects we could fundraise for, which have been whittled down to those you will read about in this brochure.

I am very grateful to the girls and boys who are giving their time to coordinate much of our Giving Weekend on 26 & 27 March 2022.

Their energy and enthusiasm for this “1803 Annual Fund” Appeal is palpable! The fund is named in acknowledgement of the first pioneering students who came as exiles from Lamspringe in Germany to found Ampleforth College, a spirit that is still evident in our students today.

I hope you will feel able support our school, in any way that you can, so we can make these projects a reality this year for the girls and boys. I look forward to sharing all the brilliant things we will achieve together through your support.

Our Community Unity starts by nurturing community. We can do this every day by encouraging each other, and always seeking to reach our full potential, be it spiritually or socially.

The sense of unity in the boarding houses is often referred to by housemistresses and masters as a family. In many ways this is true, because both families and boarding houses have a similar way of being infuriating one minute, and loving the next. Mother Teresa said that if you want to change the world, go home and love your family.

Real community is the vehicle for true growth as it enables us to learn to love our enemies as Christ did and challenges us to put others first through practising reconciliation and hospitality. In a good community, people are respectful and empathetic of people’s emotions and ideas. In our houses this means that we do everything we can to ensure that people feel welcome, in their home from home.

In our lessons this means attentiveness and regard for the others in your class.

True unity in a community is where everyone can speak honestly and be listened to, a place where everyone can contribute and feels confident to do so, a place where people feel at home and safe in their environment. It requires effort – effort to choose to do the more loving thing for those we live and work with, effort to be more open and honest when we are annoyed, and to accept that we can annoy other people (and to listen when they tell us that).

There is also the effort to attend to the details of others’ lives, such that we know when something is wrong, and when they are troubled.

We can’t be unified if people feel separated and different. We also can’t be unified if people don’t feel welcome or happy. If there is separation and division, then this isn’t a community, but more a group of people who don’t serve much purpose.

We hope that we will encourage everyone in the school to do everything they can to ensure our community remains unified and conscious of others, and that this carries on throughout our lives.

Improving Social Spaces: £12,000 Students tell us that they want better spaces outside of the houses where they can relax and socialise with their year group. There is a real benefit to being “somewhere different” - places dedicated to social time, to help students have a well-earned break and time together.

The Sixth Form have the benefits of The Windmill on the weekend, so the younger years would like us to refurbish the Matthew’s Rooms to create a fun place for them to have socials at the weekend and on certain evenings. This common room will have some café style facilities for themed nights, games and activities, comfortable furnishings, gaming spaces, a projector for film nights and plenty more. The Upper School regularly make use of the St Nicholas Common Room and Garden, a grown-up space where they can be with their peers. With your support we can improve the interior design of this space and improve the garden so the students can make better use of it and bring life to main College building.

Inspiring Education: £10,000 Our students are excited by Independent Thinking Learning and Coping (ITLC), and we wish to invest in students’ educational outcomes. Much like modern office environments we know that not all learning and working is done sitting still at a desk. Launching our first ITLC Classroom creates a learning space that enables them to think independently, learn in a collaborative environment that isn’t restricted by traditional classroom layouts and take charge of their educational experience.

This dynamic and innovative learning space will be used by all age groups and will help our teachers inspire students to develop ITLC skills which will prepare students for the world beyond school.

We hope that by creating this new learning space we will continue to embed ITLC throughout the College, one classroom at a time.

As we get older and we move through the school, especially after a long period of online learning, we want to be excited to be in the classroom and not always sat behind a desk or looking at a screen. An ITLC Classroom, that will be light and bright like the new Learning Hub and Computer Rooms, where we have the tools and set up to learn more independently is exciting. Being able to use this room for lots of different subjects and year groups will help us all to get the most out of our lessons and I hope we will see more classrooms like this soon!”

A Space for Faith: £8,000 The Lower and Upper Chaplaincies are in the heart of the College and are valued spaces for students to spend time together exploring their faith. Student led groups including Lectio and Rosary groups meet regularly in these spaces, times they value greatly. Our new Year group Chaplaincy programme is already engaging students in formation throughout the school and their activities are having an impact in the wider community. We encourage students to be part of the life of the Church and provide service to others, all whilst having fun together.

The Lower Chaplaincy is the hub for the College Chaplains and needs refurbishment to help them extend hospitality to students and staff. Your support will help us to provide new furnishings and facilities to make this a warm, welcoming and comfortable space, where students can seek support from Chaplains outside of the boarding houses, placing Christ at the centre of our school life.

Cricket - a Sport for All: £10,000 Over recent years cricket has become a whole school sport, whether competitively or socially. Since the introduction of girls’ cricket at Ampleforth the sport has seen a growth within the College at a level never seen before. To facilitate as much of the sport as our students want to play, we need to expand our facilities.

We want to introduce a much-needed new cricket pitch, with an AstroTurf wicket, so that the unpredictable Yorkshire weather doesn’t stop our girls and boys being able to play as much cricket as they want to in summer and early autumn. This would also enable us to share our facilities with the Yorkshire Girls Cricket Hub and other local groups, bringing together our own girls with others from North Yorkshire on a weekly basis during summer to help boost the sport across the north.

Ways you can give We welcome gifts of all sizes to support the projects within the 1803 Annual Fund. This year’s fund runs until July 2022, so that we can enable all the projects to be delivered during the Summer Holidays.

Thanks to generous supporters, all donations made before 31 March, up to a fund total of £40,000, will be doubled. For every £1 you give, they will match your donation.
