What is FSC Recycled? The FSC Recycled label was introduced in order to recognise the important role that recycling paper and timber plays in protecting the world’s forests. Unlike general ‘recycled’ claims, which require no verification, the FSC Recycled label provides assurance that all the wood or paper in a product has been verified as genuinely reclaimed or recycled. Reclaimed materials can also be used in products carrying the FSC Mix label. Wood products carrying the FSC Recycled label have been verified by a third party certification body as being made from at least 70% post-consumer reclaimed materials, i.e. wood and or wood fibre that has been reclaimed from a product after that product has been used for its intended purpose by individuals or businesses. The remaining material must be verified as pre-consumer waste. The FSC Recycled label is not, however, a guarantee that the wood originally comes from an FSC-certified forest.

The History of Timber Cladding Timber cladding has a long and proven history across many parts of the world, particularly in Scandinavia, North America, and Japan, where it has been used for centuries on the exterior of buildings in both harsh climates and those similar to the UK. These regions have refined techniques for seasoning, detailing, and maintaining timber, with examples still standing on buildings dating back to the 13th century. Although the UK has traditionally favoured masonry and brickwork, timber cladding is now growing in popularity as architects and homeowners seek sustainable, lowcarbon, and naturally warm alternatives.

Bolo’s Cottage Coulston, Wiltshire

An 18th-century thatched cottage with a long family history, Bolo’s Cottage has recently undergone a careful renovation and extension. The aim was to preserve its period charm while opening the interiors to light and modern family life — creating a welcoming home for living and entertaining. The result blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, where natural materials unite the old and the new. Our Arden Oak cladding, used on the external façade, was central to Chalk Architects’ vision. A traditional British building material, the oak softens the new form and provides a complementary contrast to the thatch and stone — a familiar material applied in a refined, modern way, and left to naturally weather with time.

Barnfield

Leominster, North Herefordshire Set in the picturesque market town of Leominster, Barnfield Farm is a strong example of how traditional agricultural buildings can be transformed into sustainable modern homes. The project re-purposed a disused steel-framed barn into two energy-efficient residences, combining renewable technologies with a design that respects the site’s rural character. Our Parkland Cedar cladding was central to the design, providing a natural, durable finish that connects the new homes to their surroundings. The timber’s characterful appearance was seen as a way to retain the barn-like character of the original structure. Grown in the UK, and as a fast-growing renewable material, it was chosen to help reduce the buildings’ carbon footprint. As it weathers, the Cedar develops a silverygrey patina, enhancing the simple, functional character of the conversion.

Ember Accoya® Earthy colours, finished by fire

What is Yakisugi Product Insight A traditional Japanese wood preservation technique that involves charring the surface of timber to enhance its durability and aesthetic appeal. Originating in 18th-century Japan, the process involves binding boards together and burning the inner faces, then cooling, brushing, and oiling the wood to create a carbonised protective layer. This method became a Japanese tradition as it was believed to increase the timber’s resistance to rot, insects, and weathering, while also reducing flammability and repelling moisture. The result is a distinctive, naturally produced blackened finish that combines both function and aesthetics.

TECHNICAL

What is Thermowood? Thermowood is timber that has been heat-treated to improve its durability, stability, and resistance to moisture and decay — all without using chemicals.

THE PROCESS

THE RESULT

Transforming natural timber into Thermowood involves placing it in a controlled environment where heat and steam are carefully managed. Heat alters the cell structure of the wood, while steam prevents the timber from burning & cracking. The temperature is raised to very high levels, which breaks down the hemicelluloses — sugars within the timber that fungi typically feed on. During this process, hydroxyl groups (-OH) are also removed; these are the parts of the cell structure that allow timber to absorb water.

Because of these structural changes, the timber can no longer easily absorb moisture. This prevents moisture movement from occurring, meaning the timber is very unlikely to cup, warp, or twist, and is more resistant to rot.

After several hours in these conditions, the temperature is gradually reduced to cool the timber, and moisture is reintroduced to recondition and balance it.

The removal of sugars ensures there is nothing left for fungi to feed on, making decay highly unlikely. Since the process uses only heat and steam, with no chemicals, Thermowood is eco-friendly and can be disposed of like any other natural timber at the end of its life.

Guide to fire retardancy treatment Today, timber cladding is experiencing a resurgence in popularity; fire retardancy and the applicable regulations for your project need to be considered and allowed for. Throughout this guide, we provide an overview of the fire regulations in place for external cladding in the UK, and how timber’s reaction to fire can be classified.

55

FIRE REGULATIONS FOR EXTERNAL CLADDING Large timber surfaces are slow to ignite because the outer char layer insulates the core, reducing fire spread. Therefore, timber cladding generally presents a limited fire risk unless specific fire ratings are required by regulation. In the UK, Building Regulations (Approved Document B) require external wall materials and cladding to restrict fire spread both vertically and between buildings. Fire rating requirements depend on building height, use, and proximity to boundaries: Buildings under 18 m: Cladding within 1 m of a boundary must achieve Euro Class B or better; no rating is required if over 1 m away from the boundary. Relevant buildings over 18 m (with residential or institutional use): Cladding must be Euro Class A—non-combustible—regardless of boundary distance. Untreated wood (typically Euro Class D) is unsuitable for buildings within these limits. However, flame-retardant treatment can upgrade timber to Class B, making it compliant for low- to mid-rise buildings and those within 1 m of a boundary. Because wood cannot achieve Class A, it is unsuitable for residential or institutional buildings over 18 m tall. Outside these cases, treated timber remains a safe, sustainable, and versatile cladding option offering both aesthetic and environmental benefits. The reaction to fire performance of timber cladding is defined under EN 13501-1, and construction products are assigned a Euroclass rating under this system (see next page for a brief overview).

N/A

SMOKE GENERATION S1

Emissions absent or very little

S2

Emissions with average volume intensity

S3

Emissions with high volume intensity

Smoke generation is measured for Reaction to Fire classes A2 to D (not E or F).

FIRE GENERATION d0

No burning droplets

d1

Slow dripping droplets

d2

High/Intense dripping droplets

Burning droplets/particles can inflict skin burns and cause further spread of fire. E-rated products receive a d2 flaming droplet classification. F-rated products receive none.

FORMAT & EXAMPLE A product fire classification combines all three of these measures, starting with combustibility, then smoke generation, and finally fire generation. e.g. A product with the resulting highest classification would have the standard B/ S1/d0. This translates to: B - Combustible materials – Very Limited contribution to fire s1 - Smoke emissions absent or very little d0 - No burning droplets

Timber textures PLANED Planed texture refers to a smooth, uniform surface that is achieved by machine-planing the wood, creating an even and sleek finish. This texture showcases the natural colour and grain of the timber, allowing for a more refined and contemporary appearance. Planed textures are often chosen for modern or minimalist designs, offering a clean and polished aesthetic that contributes to a sleek and sophisticated architectural style.

FINE SAWN The result of a specific milling process where the wood is cut parallel to the grain, creating a rougher, textured surface. This process leaves behind prominent, linear bandsaw markings, giving the timber a distinct, sawn appearance. This finish provides a rough, natural look, often chosen to evoke a sense of traditional craftsmanship and natural warmth in architecture, and can also enhance the durability of a coating.

BRUSHED

TECHNICAL

This texture is achieved by brushing the wood’s surface with a wire brush to remove the soft fibres, leaving the harder grains exposed. The result is a textured surface with a pronounced grain pattern and a weathered look. Brushing works best on softwoods with wider grains, and provides a natural and rugged appearance, popular for creating a more textural finish, particularly suited for a traditional or rustic aesthetic.

Timber tones & coatings NATURAL TIMBER WEATHERING Freshly sawn or machined timber has a rich, warm colour that varies by species and often impacts the visual effect of one species over another. In this state, the grain pattern is distinct and vibrant, and the surface is smooth, sometimes showing a slight sheen, especially when planed. Over time, timber naturally develops a grey or silvery patina as it is exposed to rain and UV light, which break down the surface lignin. The grain becomes less pronounced, the texture feels rougher, and small surface cracks may appear. Some species remain recognisable even when fully weathered due to their characteristic grain patterns, and the process looks different for different species. The time it takes for timber to develop this patina depends on both the species and the surrounding environmental conditions, however often the change can be observed starting within 6 – 12 months of installation.

UNDERSTANDING TYPES OF COATINGS Timber can be left uncoated to naturally develop a weathered finish as above, if that look is desired. However, some prefer to coat their timber for a number of reasons: 1. Avoid the uneven colouring that occurs during the ageing process 2. Give the timber a different colour 3. Keep the timber looking its fresh original colour There are several coating options are available: Maintenance coating: Tinted oils, paints, and other finishes that slow the weathering process, requiring regular upkeep. Darker finishes require less frequent maintenance, and stable timbers tend to hold the coatings for longer. These can be either: Opaque: This is solid colour where only the texture of the timber shows through the coating, (e.g. AMOR KovaCoat/VenDura)—nature-inspired colours, requiring maintenance every few years. These change the colour of the timber cladding. Semi-translucent: these coatings allow the grain of the timber and feature to still stand out giving the timber much more of natural feel to the timber, and often translucent coats are matched with the original natural timber colour to slow the weathering process and preserve the natural colour. Transitional (pre-weathered) coating: A grey finish applied to new timber to mimic the weathered look. As it wears, the timber beneath naturally ages with minimal visual change.

TECHNICAL

All these options improve durability, enhance appearance, and maintain consistent colour over time.

The essentials of fixing timber cladding Correctly fixing timber cladding is essential for managing movement and ensuring long-term durability. You can use this simple guide/checklist to confirm all critical points have been considered, however please contact us for product-specific installation instructions before fitting.

ACCLIMATISATION

SUPPORT BATTENS

Before fitting to the building, the timber must be stored in the location of installation and left in order for the moisture content of the timber to stabilise based on the surrounding environment. Keep boards flat, well-ventilated, and protected from direct sun and rain—ideally in a dry, covered area with good airflow. When stacking boards, use level bearers and place stickers between layers for even air circulation.

Cladding boards are typically fixed to preservative-treated softwood battens installed perpendicular to the cladding (horizontal cladding will be fitted to vertical battens, and vice versa). Battens are generally spaced 400–600 mm apart. Depending on the cladding profile and installation method, counter-battens may be needed to improve drainage and ventilation. Horizontal battens should have their top edges angled to shed water.

MEMBRANE Cladding boards will allow some moisture through joints, so a breather membrane must be installed beneath the cladding to protect the building structure. Use a standard BBA-approved breathable, waterproof membrane for concealed areas, or a UV-stable façade membrane where exposure to sunlight is expected. Install insect mesh around all open cavities to prevent pests from entering.

TECHNICAL

Please note warranties [for any products where this is available]are void if cladding is not fitted in line with our product specific fitting instructions.

FEATHER EDGE

SECRET FIX

VENTILATION Provide an adequate cavity behind the cladding for drainage and airflow. This serves two main purposes: 1. Helps cladding dry quickly after wetting. 2. Balances moisture between inner and outer faces, reducing the risk of cupping. Flashing at the base of the cladding and around openings must direct water away while maintaining ventilation. Roof overhangs should extend at least 50 mm beyond the top of the cladding to prevent water ingress into ventilation gaps.
