URBANIZATION OF MUMBAI’S FRINGES, SHIFTING PLANES & URBAN MORPHOLGY

Mazgaon : Fringe Transformation

Design

The project aims at studying Mumbai’s urbanization through its fringes, it begins with studying the historical transformation of the seven islands and understanding the reclamations over time while observing the transition from an agrarian village to its heavly urbanized typology that exists today. Looking at the transformation of these shifting planes and edges and its impact on the city.

The methods in which the reclamations were carried forward led to many ecological problems and flooding issues in terms of depletions of Mumbai’s orignal landform of its mangroves, salt pans and wetlands. The current reclamation for the coastal road project will further add to these problems and hazards.

The urbanization over time has studied the patterns of marginalized communities having their settlements on the fringes due to their inability to cope with the financial demands of the city for proper housing and have settled along these fringes which were previously rich in biodiversity.

The urban transformation of Mazgaon begins with its fringe being a natural edge to a larger reclaimed heavily industrialized area with its shipbuilding and dockyard activities. Need for expansion towards the east coast for larger access to docks for trade purposes. Increased reclamation to improve economical powers through trade turning into a heavily industrialised area.

Mahim : Fringe Transformation

In the case of Mahim it studies the landmark of Mahim Fort as the edge with it Koli communities to its urbanization acting as connectivity of the island city with the northern formerly known as Salsette islands. Increased reclamation to inwards to accomodate and improve circulation within the city. Mahims location was a central point for the islands around it

Mithi River Tranformation

:

The Mithi River has been overflooding over the years and reclamation of the surrounding area has caused this issue. The Mithi river constitutes a major component of the city’s SWD system.

A report by the state states that the 18km long river width has been reduced nearly 50% and the mangroves on both sides of the river have decreased by 70% between 1966 to 2005.

The average width of the river has remained only 10m along the length.This a matter of concern as the water at time of high tide enters the creek and then to the drainage system which increases the water level in the sewage pipes which in turn reduces the discharge

RE - INTEPRETATION OF THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM

Architectural Design : Semester 8 Mentor : Apoorva Shroff Function : Healthcare Site : Versova, Mumbai

Typical hospitals systems are made to be hyper functional in terms of its accomodation of people and services which is needed for the demographic of Mumbai . The proposal aims to break the barrier between these typical systems by the addition of open and recreational spaces.

The site lies in Versova which has a juxtaposition of a heavily urban residential area on one end and mangrove cover and Juhu beach on the other. The project creates a transition of functionality to recreation as you move from the urban context to the mangroves by hinting visual clues of said recreational spaces to add a different element of experience to a hospital. It wishes to breaking the boundary between the built and unbuilt spaces by retaining mangroves and water body within the site.

THE WADALA PROJECT

Urban Design : Semester 8 Mentor : Ritu Mohanty Function : Urban Transit System Site : Wadala, Mumbai

This locality in wadala contains various mized stakeholders such as truck terminal workers, CGS goverment housing members, slum dwellers and the high income group members, th proposal aims at a connection fro the monorail to reactive the transit of the monorail as well create a new commute system keeping in mind the activity of these different stakeholders at different periods within the day. It also looks at the rejuvenation of the Wadala creek to see it as an opportunity to create recreational spaces along with the skywalk connection within this area.

COMMERCIALISATION OF LAXMI INDUSTRIAL ESTATE

Architectural Design : Semester 7 Mentor : Jagdish Jani Function : Commerical Site : Andheri West, Mumbai

Laxmi indutrial area was established in 1972 , during this period Andheri wasnt as devloped and the growth of Laxmi industrial estate in turn led to the growth of commercialisation within this area of Andheri West. This increased commercialiasation inturn led to the change in the typlogy of industrial galas and warehouses into office spaces and commercial stores respectively. The proposal chooses to understand and relate to a new typlogy of industrial estates that functions with respect to its current commercialsed state.

Architectural Design : Semester 3 Mentor :

Topic : Emergence in Nature

Emergence in nature was the topic assigned for semester 3, being a group project we decided to study the sunflower to understand its geometries and movements that it makes due to the sun angle changing.

The process involved working with many different materials such as sunboard, mdf, ply, pine wood and working with multiple various joineries to get the best result in terms of its movement.

The sunflower canopy installation had been set up in the college corridor and the material we selcted was pine wood for its light weight, economical price and sturdiness that allowed for this large canopy to stand.

Studying the high socio economic difference in India, we identified three groups - high, middle and lower economic groups. the higher socioeconomic group, holds a great deal of power, wealth and privellege to live in self sufficient isolated large houses where all their necessities are available from super stores, retails stores, restaurants etc.

The lower socioeconomic group majorly depend on the community itself be it their housing or their daily needs which are heavily dependent on the community they stay in for example, vendor markets, informal eateries and shops which also end up becoming their major source of income. The third user is the middle class user which lies on the middle of the above mentioned.

Mumbai as a city is developing constantly in terms of density and the chaos that accompanies it, which has lead to an overstimulus of the mind especially in corporate workspaces which in turn impacts the mental well-being of a person.

The Fin_House aims at providing a habitable space for a working couple between the ages of 25-35 located in a natural landscape environment of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, to provide a relief space within this dense city.

The proposed building, Ruby Phase 2 will serve s a wing of extension to the already constructed The Ruby. Our aim along with ourp roject partners Mindset Estate Pvt. ltd was to construct a comprehensice structure that not only potrays the idea of ‘Net Zero Energy and Water Consumption’ but also helps occupants in understanding its usability and importance in everyday life. The idea of introducing user-friendly and adapptable facade moduleswas incorporated in order to encourage user interactivity with the structure.

The building envelope ( double skin face ) was chosen after studying the ECBC design guide and looking into innovative materials with our industry.

The water - cooled VRF system used for catering to cooling requirements adapts to varying load demands while also allowing multiple connections to a single outdoor unit.

The building is designed to comply with LEED and WELL certifications as per the clients requirements. Every aspect of the project is conceived and planned with a careful balance of cost and performance in focus. The result is a net-zero energy and water structure that uses minimal energy or water and generates a healthy and productive enviroment for its occupants.

Double skin façade systems consist of two layers with usually glass, wherein air flows through the intermediate cavity.

This space acts as insulation against extreme temperatures, winds, and sound, improving the building’s thermal efficiency for both high and low temperatures.
