In Term 2, our curriculum for Year 8 will focus on two main areas: free-time activities and schooling. Within these topics, students will delve into vocabulary associated with various hobbies and school-related terms. We will explore the spectrum of activities accessible in Abu Dhabi and examine how to articulate school-based pursuits and subjects effectively. We will compare education in the UAE and students’ respective home countries and culminate the term with ‘My Ideal School’ project. Throughout, our emphasis remains on the comprehensive development of four essential language skills: listening, reading, speaking, and writing.

Four language skills will be assessed: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will be asked to complete a range of reading, listening and writing tasks throughout the term. Speaking performance will assessed during project presentation, or class discussions. Students will also complete end of topic assessments which will cover all four language skills. They will have to answer open-ended, true/false and multiple choice questions (listening and reading), describe a picture (speaking and writing) and produce a longer piece of writing (a blog or a letter/email).

In this term in Science, Year 8 students will complete their learning on the Ecosystem Processes topic started in term 1. They will then move onto Motion and Pressure where they will learn about motion graphs, and investigate pressure and turning forces. This will be followed by The Earth where they will learn about the rock cycle and the Earth and its atmosphere .

In Science we use Teams to support learning. Lesson and revision resources are placed in Files on the class Team.

In the first half term, students will be exploring the genre of Physical Theatre through the work of Frantic Assembly and selected extracts from The Curious Incident of the Dog In the Nightime.

This term Year 8 will be working in the genre of landscapes under a theme of “”Cityscapes””. Building upon the first terms learning of the formal elements of Line, Shape, Form and Tone. In Year 8 Design and Technology (DT), pupils will create a mobile phone stand or a polymer based led light. In each project they will delve deeper into the design process, with a focus on computer aided design and their user. They will learn how to consider feedback from others in design, manufacturing and evaluation. They will work with more complex materials and a variety of tools including 2D design, computer aided manufacturing and hotwire strip heater. They will develop a greater level of creativity and manufacturing skills.

In DT we use Seneca and Design Technology Student to support learning.

In Year 8 Music, students will study two units: All That Jazz and All About that Bass. In the first unit, students will learn how to perform a basic 12-bar blues structure with a walking bassline and chords. Students will explore swing rhythm and improvisaiton using the blues scale. In the second unit, students will develop their understanding of reading notation in the bass clef and learn bass riff patterns using a variety of classroom instruments.

In Music, all lesson resources, revision materials and assessment materials are posted on the Teams page of the class, which all students have access to.

In year 8 PE, boys will be completing a scheme of work on volleyball and rugby. Girls will be completing a scheme of work on striking and fielding and football. Students will learn the technique for different skills within each sport and how to use these within a competitive game situation. Students will understand the rules and how to implement these into their learning. Within each lesson students will be questioned about the sports techniques, tactics and rules and how these can be implemented fairly in a game.

All communication, reflections and suggested videos for students to access will be available on the PE groups Teams page.

Students will learn the basics of HTML and CSS, and how to create a responsive design which adapts to any size of screen for viewing on, say, a mobile phone or a PC. They will learn how to create text styles and add content, including text and graphics, in a specified position on a page, as well as navigation links to other pages on their website and to external websites. The basics of good design are covered and, with the help of worksheets, pupils will develop their own templates in a text editor such as Notepad ++. They will decide on a topic for their websites, document their designs and collect suitable text and images. They will then use their HTML templates to create their websites, including a web form.

Code.org: Students have thier own login details to access the page. This allows student to work throught different paced lessons to learn how to create a website. It allows them to create their own website using different HTML tags.

Wider reading We want all students to gain a love for PE. This term we are encouraging all students to find an autobiography of their favourite sports star. When reading the book, identify the details of why they have become a successful athlete.
