Putting the modern separation of workplace and home under the microscope, gave way to the idea of what if the program was such that allowed for residents to combine the two. Collector spaces that allowed the resident to set up his or her office at home. Tall ceilings that accommodated for the DIY culture. All a while, the ground plane is open to the public. These type of open space is becoming more and more scarce due to the exponential growth of Toronto. Activating the ground plane by leaving it developed and habitable at will. This provides a utopian space for the neighborhood organized programs. Farmers market, festivals, open space for musicians… Narrative through Program: 20% retail: New Bazar: Out that 20%, 10% are smaller spaces which are cheaper to lease. This can tie back to the idea of supporting emerging markets. Through analyzing the current and future developments of area, one thing becomes significant, and that is spaces are easy to rent, cheap to rent and are easily accessible are disperse. This will create a deficiency in the area that my program is providing for. The idea of bazar comes to play, as the site is located near corridors that lead into Old Town, Pan Am Village, and Distillery District. 25% residential: Although the surrounding area is overflowing with residential developments, there’s a deficiency for more loft / collector spaces. By having the building follow a very rational structure, the cost can be brought down.

15% residential office: Almost all of the current and future developments are lacking spaces that allow for professionals that set up offices at home. By analyzing the current interior of the most office spaces, and putting that in contrast with our residential places, one can notice that they are both beginning to resemble one another. Idea behind the residential office space is to provide a column free area that There’s also a thought given to maker or DIY generation. 20% office: Deep floors allow for traditional office requirements. At the same time, some of these spaces will be divided into smaller spaces and eventually into desks which are rentable for professionals. 10% Collaborative Spaces/10% light industry: These spaces are shared by all of the commercial spaces to breed cross pollination between different professions. Public spaces: sunken plaza, protected against the element by the fact that is below grade. This is main part of the connective tissue of the building. By analyzing the area, conclusion can be made, the area will be the host to a significant density within the next 5-10 years. Ground plane of the building has the potential to become a great publis space that acts as a node. As a fabric that connects the Old Town to the new developments, it can be the glue of the neighborhood.

Paradox on the Don; the conflicting nature of the river Don, gave birth to the logic of the building. Two different programs, water treatment and education are combined inside the building in order to create a center for experiential use of plants in water treatment. The paradoxical nature of the building arose from the parti model, where through the separation of positive and negative two different programs were combined. Flow between the opposite programs is achieved from the overlapping flow through the spaces. Placed in the river Don, the architecture combines two different programs which do not belong to the same category. By doing so a new condition is created where the two programs compliment one another and a new program is juxtaposed. By combining water treatment and education a new center for experiential use of plants in water remediation is created. At the macro scale, the iconic status of the building connects it to the larger context of Toronto. By providing amenities, such as a library, the core of the building is connected to the core of the downtown. By allowing access, the building opens itself to the public realm. Strategically placed at the dense residential area of Dundas, the building capitalizes on the already existing infrastructure. Lastly it also acts as a link to the walking trails along the Don.

CIRCULATION DIAGRAM: Stage by stage, breakdown, highlighting the complex nature of forces that create the conditions for the circulation. From the grid, onto the imagined parti, circulation is a byproduct of the organs of the building. One of the main functions of the structure is the direct access from the main road onto the pedestrian and cycling trails.

Abstract look at the paradox of public space gave way to an unprecedented insight into what forms our public realm. In depth research put the Galt neighborhood of the city Cambridge under the microscope in terms of potential for a community center. Looking through the scope of city and urbanization, the need for a community center in the Galt was evident. The basic architectonics of the project is the two forms that compliment one another, while creating an implied public space between them. Breakthrough of this project came through the moment created by one of the parti models, where two separate ordinary forms created an extraordinary space between them. By separating the two structures, the project was essentially divided into three major programs categories: public, private, and the in between. One of the forms was designed to feel heavy, monolithical and solid, and it would house the more private programs. The other form had to feel light, open, and light on its feet, which would house the more public programs.

SECTION PERSPECTIVE


SITE PLAN: The space between the two forms would be broad placement for the public spaces. For example programs such as pool, auditorium gallery space and community rooms were categorized as more public programs, which meant more foot traffic, more exposure to public and more visibility, hence the lifting, light, cloud like form of the public block. More closed programs such as day care, offices and parking were categorized as private programs. While the gym was placed between the two blocks underneath the ground, and the public space was the final piece that were to bring the two blocks together.

Philip Beesley Architect Inc. is an interdisciplinary design company located in Toronto, Canada. PBAI specializes in architectural design of public buildings, public art and experimental installations. The group is closely associated with the multi-partner Living Architecture Systems Group, the School of Architecture and Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo, the architectural practice of Pucher Seifert, and Riverside Architectural Press. Sculptural work in the past two decades has focused on immersive textile environments, landscape installations and intricate geometric structures. The most recent generations of these works feature interactive sound, light and kinetic mechanisms with distributed control systems. Studio research focuses on aesthetics, technology and craft of responsive envelope systems including digital fabrication of extremely light-weight, flexible component arrays containing embedded sensors and actuators. Projects are developed at widely varying scales from urban design to personal couture, using cycles of multidisciplinary experimentation and implementation. The studio’s design methods combine the durable crafts of heavy machining and building with advanced digital visualization, industrial design, digital prototyping, electronics and mechanical engineering. ROLES IN THE PROJECT: PHYSICAL PROTOTYPING DESIGN CHARRETTES CONCEPTUAL DESIGN 3D MODELING GRAPHICAL PRESENTATION

Increasingly, the surfaces, buildings and environments that surround us are embedded with interactive potentials. Capable of sensing and actuation, they make it possible to rethink architecture not as something static, but rather as entities and environments able to respond and adapt to changing conditions, and to engage in active conversations and mutual exchange with their occupants. This research poses new considerations and opportunities for architectural design - how can these ‘living’ systems function, and how can they be designed and adapted within architecture? PBAI’s exhibit includes embedded machine intelligence that allows human interaction to trigger breathing, caressing, and swallowing motions as fronds reach for viewers in a layer of undulating motions. Housed inside these fronds, a flask containing protocells trigger hybrid metabolic exchanges. ‘Living’ chemical exchanges are conceived as the first stages of self-renewing functions that might take root within these installations.

ROLES IN THE PROJECT: PHYSICAL PROTOTYPING DESIGN CHARRETTES CONCEPTUAL DESIGN 3D MODELING GRAPHICAL PRESENTATION

Located at Toronto’s City Hall, Ocean was part of Oblivion, a three part series of installations. Oblivion was about destruction and forgetting, drowning in the pitchblackness of pure and final absence, and about the possibilities of adaptation and unprecedented renewal. Ocean was an experiential installation, Ocean created a turbulent primal environment in the Rotunda of City Hall. A constantly-changing canopy of recycled textiles induces vast, unstable forces where brilliant bursts of light alternate with dark, surging movements and intense waves of hypnotic sound. A chorus of cries and whispers echoes within rising waves. This dense aggregation of raw recycled textiles from H&M’s Garment Collecting Initiative is transformed into an intricate and undulating mass, evoking the emergence of life in the ocean environment from unconscious realms into living form. This deeply immersive installation questions the hardened boundaries of traditional architecture and evokes self-generation, renewal and adaptation. Photograph by PBAI. 56

Inspired by regional material palettes and traditions, the new mixeduse project combines the highest level of international class a office and luxury high-rise residential towers with a state of the art retail center. the form of the building is unique, sculptural, and iconic, yet provides generous flexible and highly leasable spaces.

west entry while a central atrium draws shoppers up to the sky garden and links with the gourmet hypermart in the lower levels. the intimate village inspired f&b on level 4 distinguishes itself from typical food-courts and is designed to provide an upscale dining experience with regionally inspired shops. the sky garden culminates the retail experience, offering a park-like atmosphere with destination dinning and shops.

The project is organized with a clear access for vehicular and pedestrian traffic at ground level with prominent entry points for both the office and retail programs while privacy is retained with and exclusive residential drop-off and lobby. shuttle elevators and a sky lobby create a prominent space under the sweeping forms of the tower bases, while freeing up valuable ground floor retail. large open atriums connect retail spaces through the podium creating visibility and higher traffic-flow to upper level retail.

The 204m, forty story office tower will be an international class a high-rise with a luxurious central lobby providing a prominent address along sudirman. the center core organization provides flexible design for a variety of tenants, while the larger lower floor plates offer desirable tech-friendly units overlooking the sky garden.

The retail podium is designed to provide a unique luxury retail experience that will draw customers, while providing the flexibility to accommodate world-class boutiques, anchor tenants, and smaller designer shops. a linear galleria connects sudirman and the mrt station to the main

The residential tower rises 250m (sixty stories) topping the development with desirable luxury units. given the immediacy of the site, the angled tower provides clear unobstructed views while the serrated curtain wall and garden terraces provide privacy and intimacy. the gently sloped faรงade opens to an internal atrium, and amenity floors with health spa, fitness center, garden space, and recreation center.

ROLE IN THE PROJECT: MASSING CONCEPTUAL DESIGN FACADE DESIGN 3D MODELING

Inspired by the traditional Chinese lanterns, this project aims to bring a new aesthetic quality to the traditional hospital. My role in the project included transferring the conceptual design to 3D realm. Through the use of Rhinoceros and Grasshopper I was able to execute the desired effect. HLW is an international architecture, engineering, and design consultancy, headquartered in New York City, with offices in New Jersey, Los Angeles, London and Shanghai. It is one of the oldest surviving AE firms architectural engineering firms in the United States, tracing its beginnings to 1885 in New York. During my 4 months coop I was involved in a verity of projects including Google’s headquarters in New York City, 70 and 50 Columbus Street Towers, 1285 Avenue of the Americas among many. I was involved in schematic design for office towers and interiors, design development, tending drawings for 70 and 50 Columbus Street Towers, and construction details for various projects. My breadth of work also involved in creation of various renders made in varying styles, along with presentation diagrams.

Chinese Finger Trap is a toy which uses tension to create a tight, strong weave of materials; the more its members are pulled, the stronger the membrane becomes. Building off this concept, our structure uses pinned tensile members to achieve a web-like space frame. This frame can be expanded upon by weaving more cables into the existing framework and anchoring them to the ground, existing structures, or a monolithic column. This parasitic structure has a variety of applications: it could be deployed in nature as an observatory walkway, or in cities as a way to make up for lost space. An important part of the assembly. This connection will be connected directly to the steel structure of the building, while additional support is provided to minimize the sway.

Most common connection in the structure. Minimal look allows for the connection to blend well with the structure. Circular steel assembly allows for the connection to be rotated depending on the unique connections. Using only nuts and bolts, and standardized sizes, connection becomes: easily interchangeable, less labor intensive, and allows for quick assembly.

Certain degree of rotation will be tolerated through the connection. The end piece will be welded to the steel monolith.

AN OFF-THE-GRID PAVILION

Being one of the biggest tourist attractions in the world, Egypt has an annual average of 12 million visitors. The current infrastructure of Egypt does not fully support this number of people, hence there’s a need for a sustainable, off the grid, traditional yet modern architecture to provide a comfortable experience. Pitstop, is a prototype pavilion, where the goal is to have minimum reliance on fossil fuel energy. The hot arid temperature calls for maximum shading and cool air.

Section: Traditional Middle-Eastern windcatchers. By aligning the intake grill to the North West (at this site, North West gets the most breezes) , the windcatcher catches the air and directs it through the tower and onto

the ground floor. The hot air is then turned into cool air when it is blown over the body of water. This selfsustaining natural process repeats all year round and cools the air inside the pit stop.

Climate consultant’s data for Faiyum, Egypt introduced an essential need for cool air. Part of the strategy behind the location of the structure was finding natural water. Lake Qaroun, a small lake near Cairo, provided that. A small opening into the lake channels water underneath the building’s wind catcher.

JUNKSPACE TO MULTI-HOUSING

The challenge to the group was to convert a junk space in Cambridge into a housing complex, which was capable of providing shelter for 100 people, parking and a communal hub. The team began with a typical modern courtyard complex, which would occupy most of the site. Each end of the building was then opened up, to introduce an open feeling to the courtyards. After each wing was raised or lowered depending on its relation to the sun in order for it to allow more light in. The response to this challenge was to create a complex, which would in essence be looking inward onto itself. Community goal was to provide a green space for the residence to enjoy.

MODERN LOFTS; PLUGGING INTO TORONTO’S ST.CLAIR STREET

The need for a fresh urban building type drove the core of this project. Located on the south side of St.Clair, the challenge was to take advantage of its close proximity to public transport and already existing biking infrastructure. As a result, significant thought was given to bicycle storage. Being close to street, meant developing a dual entrance for both commercial use and private use.
