3RD YEAR ARCHITECTURE UNIVERSITY OF SALFORD

BRIEF:

- The concept for my design was to encourage walking as its a main concern for those suffering from long term symptoms from long term covid - The virus effects the users throat and lungs therefore it is important to allow for spaces to have ventilation and resting spaces in between longer hallways - The building is designed to not limit the freedom of movement of the users but to amplify and encourage safe walking distances to help them recover fast with the help of the site’s natural greenery and landscaping - According to the Health Building Note, circulation is an imporant factor in design as it is able to reduce stress and anxiety in patients by creating character in within these spaces to make the patients feel comfortable in this new enviroment

GROUND FLOORPLAN

- Features the main clinical spaces with each space being divided by a section of greenery to bring the nature indoors for the users and to act as a buffer zone to prevent any accidental radiation.

- Patients are able to enjoy the the greenspaces without worrying about safety and privacy, the northern side porch also features an overhang which creates causstic reflections during the night for the guests to enjoy and use as a space for reflection before entering any treatment - The ramp allows for better accessability for wheelchair users to directly access their overnight studios without having to go past all the medical facilites and encourages able patients to walk and explore the outdoors without pressure

FIRST FLOORPLAN

- Features the social spaces for external visitors and privite resdiential studios for long term patients. The residential studios can only be accessed by patients through the western ramp, whilst the southern ramp directly accesses all the social spaces to maintain privacy - The indoor greenspace is directly viewable from the first floor mezzanine and has direct access to sunlight because of the south facing windows. Each studio has a direct view to the canal waterfront, additonal on the northern side is the spotlights which will shine on the water during the night and create caustic reflection in the porch area on the ground floor - Each studio is fitted with its own kitchen, ensuite and living spaces to re-create a home like enviroment to not make patients feel isolated

DESIGNING A PATHWAY FOR USERS

RECEPTION LOBBY OUTDOOR PORCH

- The reception lobby uses different sections of the building to enhance the experience from the moment the patient enters a natural sunlit path is created during the day that leads them through the building.

- The reception features a vending machine, plants and a handwashing station to prevent any spread of the virus to the users - The walls the line with the scanning rooms are lined with lead which prevents any radiation from leaking - The first this that is visable to the patients when they walk in is the indoor garden on the east side of the building whihc acts as a visual focus - The glulam structure truss structure is exposed to create a bold contrast between all the concrete material that also servers as a thermal mass during the winter months
