ICONIC HOUSE
Cala House Cala House was designed by Alberto Campo Beaza in 2015. The task was to research and understand how the iconic house relates to both the site and context. This led me to develop and realise the significant role site analysis and research can affect the way a building is shaped and designed as in the Cala House a simplistic outer exterior hides a much more complex interior. Photographic Analysis
My site analysis began with looking at the surrounding views of the site, this was done as it would impact where my house design will be placed because landscaping plays a role in the position of the building.

Artificial and Natural lighting Next site visit, lighting including both artificial and natural impacted the way I would design my house for the client because in visiting the site at night and in the day. Two different spectpectives were seen. Therefore including adequate lighting in the home as well as window views was essential to observe sun paths and lighting fixtures.

Different land classifications, property uses, travel routes and surfaces/sights all impacted the way the building would have looked for example if a client wanted privacy rooms like the bedroom and bathroom would be away from the busy travel route side.

Points of interest around site
Looking at different points of interest around the site helped shape my characters story because they will be living in this area. understanding what facilities and entertainment there is to do would help shape the way my client would live their life here in Salford Quays.

Historical photographic collage
It was important to understand the history of Salford Quays as a former industrial shipping doc. As architecture develops through time, different periods of time require different buildings so in effect housing must have a timeless sense.
Soundscape collage
In my soundscape collage, I created images which reflected what sounds were present as I walked around the site area. This helped me understand how a client would feel living if I felt safe, nervous or scared impacted the houses design.

Dead leaf and branches charcoal trace
Using leafs and branches from the site to create charcoal traces was an emotional response to the amount of pollution and litter I found around the site. Although the area is fairly modern and new, littering is still an issue.

Using biro and pencil, I sketched some of the buildings around the site whilst I was there. This helped me to understand the environment and location much more than if I just used pictures.

“Concepts Meet Reality” For my site combine of both my emotional and formal responses. I created a piece called “Concepts meet reality”. It was named this because I felt although the site was natural and organic, there was a clash between nature and man made buildings that was occurring whilst there. Therefore, using layings of charcoal traces, leafs and branches and cardboard on top of a site grid. I created this piece to reflect all elements that were at the site, burning one edge was done to symbolise pollution that was there.

Client’s Backstory The client I had was an acrobat, she specialises in contortion based acrobatics so she is very flexible and she performs in a travelling circus. She wanted to stay in Salford Quays because of the facilities and the overall good location there. This home will be used temporarily by her when she is taking time off her busy schedule or is injured and needs time to rest. In the house she will be living alone and she doesn’t keep in contact with her family as they opposed her decision of joining a travelling circus. She does however occasionally have friends and co-workers over and doesn’t do relationships since she has had trust issues in the past and doesn’t have time. She is an outgoing, confident and ambitious individual who strives to be the best in her field of work, she can be described as somewhat of an egotist in areas. She enjoys the attention and publicity of being an acrobat and she wants a house that will reflect her unortandox lifestyle, whilst having all the necessities she’ll need to maintain her healthy figure.

Unique requirements: -Entertainment space This space will be used to entertain guests she has over, since she is an extroverted person she will need a place to throw parties and perform. -Gym Since she is an acrobat, having a healthy lifestyle and figure is important so a personal gym where she can do her specialised workouts is important -Private Balcony Even though she is an extroverted person, she still needs a little alone time so this balcony can be where she will retreat when she is feeling stressed

My next house design issues occurred when I looked at how much space this house design would take up on the 140m limit.

My third iteration, I added in changes to the functions and ways of moving around the house. For example I added in a private balcony that could only be accessed by the client when she performs a specific pose in a hole in the wall similar to a keyhole and having a catilivering part of the entertainment space which extends to the canal.

Timeline of events that lead my client contracting COVID-19

Character Development Changes occured in the requirements of the house and others needed to be added and taken away. When thinking of how my client would be during this pandemic, it would definitely take a toll on her mental health, since she does enjoy entertaining and being surrounded by people self isolating at the previous house design wouldn’t work. Changes to house requirements: Private Balcony removed Became redundant since client will be self isolating and keeping away from people and friends Added hobby area Since my client will be indoors and she is an active and ambitious person who likes to try new things it would be good to add in a hobby area where she can practise new skills and develop old ones to prevent her from being bored Added Indoors greenspace As my client won’t be able to leave the home and explore her environment, it was best to add a greenspace where she can experience the outdoors indoors and it would help her mental health through this pandemic Added Indoor pool Since the cantilevering balcony was removed that lead to the canal, it would be better to replicate that space indoors so the can still perform her daredevils stunts

With the new situation I began researching and sketching ways for my client to move around the home and developed two house designs being public vs private living and the other being having the entertainment space and the main hub of the home.

When exploring the public vs private living scenario, I had issues designing how the entertainment space would function as well as how the client would be able to move to each room in the home without putting people entering at risk.

For the next house design I looked at having the entertainment space outdoors, separating the client and from guests. This way she couldn’t infect them and they could still watch her perform by the use of full panel windows looking into the home. This also helped guests maintain the 2m social distancing rule without the space feeling cramped.
