Building Appraisal The building although having much historical significance, it has fallen into disrepair. Therefore, when designing these spaces walls, doors and windows must be properly insulated or replaced to prevent unwanted heat loss. Based on the interior photos (2), both the bank and fire bays have had a connection because of the patched brickwork between them therefore creating and opening between the spaces or removing the wall completely doesn’t affect the historical significate of the space. Based on the current roof design, when designing the extension, it’s important to note the amount of daylighting the bays receive from the roof sunlight as building onto it would have the space be much darker (1).

The first floor receives quite a lot of natural sunlight (3); however, the space still feels enclosed so to open the space more and allow for greater use of natural light removing sections of the floor would be an option because it provides more beneficial natural light to the first and ground floor and creates a relationship between the spaces above and below.

Usually when dealing with extensions to historical building and structures, a glass structure is a popular choice among architects. This is because is the outcome of this combination of historical and modern is eye catching and bold. These designs provide an interesting concept to work from.

Concept Statement Aims: - To redesign the interior spaces of the firestation bay and bank to creating an inclusive space for community interactions - To respect and incorporate different aspects of the historical significance of the site and surroundings

- To create a sustainable environment by introducing passive design and carbon stratagies

Historical Significance: According to Manchester History, Fire Station Bays and bank building were constructed in 1903 and are Grade A listed in the Salford local list and the style can be assumed to be Edwardian/Victorian mixed because of the materials being used; Red brick and Terracotta. When considering the style of extension created for the educational space, a more modern and contemporary style would be implemented in order to provide a bold contrast between the spaces and surroundings.

Strategies Implemented - Heating and Ventilation around the building would be filtered through a heat recovery system (MVHR). This is useful for our bakery as heat generated travels around the building to be used in other parts to re-use and save energy.

- Aluminum Flashing sits on top of the parapet wall of the fire bays and is used to prevent water penetration into the building. Between the parapet and extension space would the existing roofs which will be maintained and restructured in order to fit in and allow for skylights to reach the ground floor.

- Inclusive Design features include a platform lift system on the Bakery side of the building, the reasoning for picking this specific lift design is because it allows for minimal changes to the existing structure of the building.

- Passive Daylighting

was considered in both the brewery space and bakery because the brewery would have an extension being built on top and having the extension space pushed back would allow for the roof skylighting to remain. In the bakery, removing a section of the first floor would create a mezzanine and open the space to allow for more light to penertrate from both levels.
