Upon observation, this is a staircase leads to a terrace. Which meant that the supportive structure has to bear a lot of load, therefore making the material of the structure very essential. Consequent to further inspection, The tread was supported by a metal frame and the structural support (column) seems to be made of the same material but with a higher thickness while keeping the inside of it hollow. The material is presumed to be of steel with different thicknesses and finishes in comparison to the stainless steel that the railing and baluster is made of. The column has a coating around the steel column which aligns with; "the paints shall be of proprietary system that has been tested to achieve the fire resistance performance as required in BS 476" (UBBL 211A). This ensures that the performance requirements such as for fire resistance and limit to spread of flame is under control. As far as the actual stairs go, the tread seems to be made of a hardwood plank.

As per UBBL

By Law 106 - Rules on STAIRCASES • RISERS ≤180mm max & TREAD 255mm min: In the selected staircase, both the requirements are met

and is considered an ideal staircase.

By Law 109 - WINDING STAIRCASE• Spiral Stairs permitted as secondary stairs where top floor ≤12.2m or not as required means of egress: The selected staircase is used as a secondary staircase to the entire floor, however, it is the primary/only staircase to the mini-terrace

that it leads to.

By Law 109 [AMENDED] - Winding and spiral stairs shall not form part of exit routes: The chosen staircase is not anywhere near an exit route and has enough walking space around it without any hindrance.

By Law 110 - No OBSTRUCTIONS in staircase. No projections except handrails and overhead min 2m high: It is important to note that the chosen staircase's overhead is 1.8m high and causes a little bit of an interference for people who is relatively taller. It also may seem enclosed from the top as the terrace covers a little bit of the staircase while you climb up.

Reflection Through this assignment, I learnt to look into every small detail and analyze the reasoning behind every part of the design. This assignment in particular was quite interesting as I got to measure and draw a spiral staircase as it challenged me to go out of my comfort zone and do something out of the norm.

Although it was a little difficult to draw, I ended up learning many new techniques on auto CAD and started to take note of details that I never thought of before. Apart from the difficulty in drawings, I faced many challenges in getting the exact measurements as it was a spiral staircase. However, I quickly learnt that once I have the base measurements, it is quite easy to draw out the plan and elevation with little details in mind.

Another aspect of this project was too look into the UBBL. UBBL is quite new to me and once I went though the PDF file, I realized what an important role it plays in regards to the laws that needed to be followed in the construction of anything including staircases.

I learnt that there is a lot more to consider while designing a staircase compared to what I had thought of before discovering the UBBL. Overall, I have a better understanding of the importance of detailing as well as specifications in my drawings. I will keep practicing and implementing what I learnt for this project onto my future assignments!
