Geometric Logic

4
In this exercise, students were introduced to architectural representation beginning with the fundamentals of geometric logic. Basic Rhino 2D linework was tought, while investigating and transforming the decorative building element of a fourteenth century Gothic window. Students delt with two representation types - a diagram of logic and a precise drawing of the product. In the second part of the assignment, students transformed and adapted the system of the geometric logic from their initial diagram, in order to develop a more complex system, using overlapping copies and nested details.
REPRESENTING IN 2D Diagram of Geomtric Logic
In this drawing, the system embedded within the overall geometry of the window is extracted. The drawing is “an abstract means of thinking about organization (Stan Allen), and in this case, the overall shape of the window.
Elevation Drawing
After extracting the geometric logic of the window, it was utilized to develop an elevation drawing of the initally traced Gothic window. The guidlines set forth acted as the construction logic for new elevation drawing. Geometric Logic Diagram Geometric Logic Diagram

This exercise explores control and precision in 3D digital modeling techniques. Built off of underlying geometric system diagrams, students explored modeling regimes of the digital environment. The first one being “Euclidean, where geometries SWEPT OBJECT such as straight lines, circles, and ellipses are used as a basis for building volumes. The second, which is more Calc ulus-based, is characterized by geometries with continuous curvatures.
EXERCISE 2A Students were assigned columns from each order, this one being Doric, and similarly the first exercise, extracted a geometric logic. This time, however, rather than tracing the literal product, as was done with the Gothic window, students used the exact measurements provided and drew profiles of the base, pedestal, capital, and entablature of the column, using contruction grids.

DRAWING GEOMETRIC LOGIC + CONSTRUCTION PROCESS This exercise explores the process of producing analytical and systematic 2-dimensional drawings, describing the 3D objects modeled in the previous exercise. The objects are represented in plan, elevation, and axonometric view, in order to clearly illustrate their geometric logic. LOFT 1

In this exercise, students learnt different modelling types. Models were developed digitally, to the point of laser cut files. Studevnts focused on three types - Unrolled Surface Models, Layered Contour Models, and Eggcrate Models, producing each one digitally and physically modeling one. The following lofted planimetric profiles object was produced using the unrolled surface method.

3D Field
Exercise 4 was an exploration of 3D fields. Like Stan Allen, students considered a field condition as “any formal or spatial matrix capable of unifying diverrse elements while respecting the idendity of each. The elements explored were architectural roof and dormer typologies in order to create a field condition that was then re-formed and deforemed.
23
EXERCISE 4A 3D FIELD
Unlike previous exercises, students began to experiment with colour, using the Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black colour system. Three roof fictions were explored; two planar ones, including a cage edited field, and a non-planar one, using the flow along surface command on Rhino.

EXERCISE 4B
SPATIAL MATRICES Continuing the exploration of 3D fields, this exercise focused on partto-whole relationships, producing three different linear spatial matrices dervied from the wireframe of edited versions of the cage edited roof field from the previous exercise. For the first type, intrinsic linework was extracted from the surfaces. For the second, external linework was projected onto the surfaces, and for the last, linework that produces a thick volume of elements, rather than just the surface was created.

EXERCISE 4C
MICRO-ARTICULATION This exercise explores methods of articulating smooth surfaces of the fictional roof field through advanced 3D modeling in Rhino. In order to create a micro-articulation strategy, organization information was put in place by extracting a grid of points with Paneling Tools. Students then created a gradient conditon, in the case thickness, designing a shingle and aggregating it onto a larger surface.
