SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR WIG MAKING

CANVAS BLOCK A professional canvas block is crucial to the success of making a great wig. Blocks are covered with durable canvas fabric, making them sturdy and easy to use. Use of a canvas block warrants an accurate fit when creating a custom wig.

Select a canvas wig block that equals the circumference of your head. Blocks are available from 19 – 24 inches.

T-PINS These strong pins are perfect blocking materials. Use the t-pins to secure the custom head template and wig lace to the canvas block.

COMB The comb is a toothed instrument used for styling, cleaning and managing the hair and scalp. Use the comb to detangle the ventilated hair and style.

ASIAN VENTIL ATING NEEDLE & HOLDER Asian needles are short hair ventilating needles ranging from size 1-5. Choose the (N) needle when working with net and (S) needle when ventilating through skin foundations.

For training purposes, Asian net ventilating needles are always provided.

CLEAR PACKING TAPE Clear packing tape can is readily available at many retail stores. This tape will be applied over the cling wrap to create the head template mold.

The width of the tape should be at least 2� and designed with a high initial tack and superior holding power. A good quality brand is 3M.

SOFT MEASURING TAPE Soft Measuring Tape is a “flexible ruler” that is used to obtain accurate measurements without being evasive. This type of tape is mostly used around the home or for sewing purposes. Soft tape measures are easily maneuverable to almost any shape and size and can be used on round areas.

Use this soft tape measure to obtain dimensions of the client’s head.

WIRE WIG COMB Wig combs may be placed in the nape, temple or top area of the finished hairpiece to hold it in place. Wire wig attachment combs prevent the wig from shifting while providing a secure fit.

PERMANENT MARKER A permanent marker is used to outline the client’s hairline when making the custom head template.

WIG L ACE Choose a lace that is easy to work with in the beginning. Select material with holes that are big enough to provide smooth ventilation and small enough that your hairpiece looks natural.

Most new wigmakers prefer to use the French Lace.

Once you have mastered the art of hair ventilation, you may move forward to the premium lace foundations.

HUMAN OR SYNTHETIC HAIR Either type of hair is acceptable, but it is highly suggested that human hair is used.

Human hair is soft, more manageable, and easier to style. The movement of human hair is not easily duplicated by synthetic hair.

Human hair tends to be more expensive, but will work best in the end if you choose to bleach the knots or change original color of the hair.

PRECISION CURVED NEEDLE A Precision Curved Needle is an extremely sharp, curved needle used to pierce fabric and thick foundations.

SCISSORS Scissors is a cutting instrument used to cut various items. Use the scissors to cut the hair, lace foundation and thread.

DUCKBILL CLIPS Duckbill clips will hold hair in sections for easy styling. Simply move the loose hair away from the area being ventilated and pin it down.

CLING WRAP Also known as “Plastic Wrap”, Cling Wrap is a thin plastic film that is typically used to seal food items in containers to keep them fresh. It is clear and very flexible.

Use cling wrap to cover the head and create a transparent base that will later become the custom head template.

SPRAY BOTTLE A spray bottle is used to lightly spritz water onto the ventilated hair. The weight of the water will make the hair lay down and become easier to manipulate.

INVISIBLE THREAD Also known as “Magician’s Thread” or “Monofilament”, Invisible thread is very thin nylon thread used when stitching is not to be seen. The thread is perfect for use on any color fabric base due to its transparent color. The nylon thread is pliable and does not become brittle or discolor with age.

Choose a brand that with a matte finish. Use this thread to attach the seams together or to add lining ribbon to the wig.
