external wall section the first exercise of the technology module dealt with understanding the building skins and the details of the assembly of the building. we studied 3 typologies of buildings namely, residential, old and commercial. these were different in terms of their methods of construction due to use of different materials, giving us a broad understanding in the nuanced ways in which each type is designed for giving the structure a longer and more self sustainable life. the process, however was more taxing than i assumed it would be because my understanding of the details was far less accurate i thought. this led to constant back and forth work on site and on the drawings.

wall section drawings required us to conjecture several of the details. it was also realized that the methods followed on site are not the same as the theoretical ones.

wall section of old building sections of old buildings were rather difficult to conjecture due to the fact that most of the things inside the houses were changed because of wear and tear. the flooring, the joists, even the balconies were remodeled by the residents. this difficulty was resolved by going through references of typical details of such nature. referencing played a key role in identifying and correctly drawing out the details of these typology of buildings.

a take off sheet is first prepared for knowing the quantities required. for this, several plans need to be made in order to achieve utmost accuracy.

2. the specification manual is then referred to know the rates of the materials calculated in the take off sheets 3. then, according to the quantities, the cost of each item is calculated.

a set of 10 case studies were given. these needed to be intensively studied and documented in terms of their designs and structures. tokyo international forum is a multi functional space 225m in length and 60m high, the roof resting entirely on 2 columns.

electrical lighting layout documentation this brief focused on familiarizing with the electrical fittings and connections, in a residence, their representation and the effect they each create in combination with one another.

acoustics and lighting analysis a certain kinds of spaces have a specific light condition and specific kinds of sound absorption materials. this allows the space an ambience that is suitable for the functions of that space. this graph maps the light levels of 5 different types of eateries in the way one experiences the space. the differences in the light levels create a different mood in the same space. also, it was inferred that the entire experience of any space is through both- the sound and its lighting. a small change in either of this alters experiences and the nature of the space.

Learning-passing on the cost

this module has focused on the theoretical understanding and the practical use of the gained knowledge. the seminar readings seem to tie the whole module and for me, it boils down to the understanding of the gap between theory and practice. there is inevitably a difference in the theory and practice of everything. be it the simple act of building a wall or the task of managing our resources. passing on the cost is an exemplary textual evidence of the reasons due to which our planning and execution do not match. we do not plan what we execute in terms of our energy uses.
