On behalf of the Souhegan Valley Transportation Collaborative (aka The Blue Bus) during National Transit Week from June 17th-June 21st, we thank the many employees and drivers of the Nashua Transportation System for their hard work. Dispatch answers phone calls and ensures that schedules are efficient. Dedicated drivers make sure that the residents of Amherst, Brookline, Hollis, Milford, Mont Vernon and Wilton get to medical appointments on time, buy groceries, prescriptions and other essentials. They also ensure riders have opportunities to utilize libraries, senior centers and other social service agencies. Many of these older riders and those with disabilities have few other transportation options.

The staff’s dedication to the riders safe access to these destinations is appreciated. We look forward to the continued growth of this partnership with Nashua Transit Service and the communities that we serve.

Water Testing Begins

Water quality testing by dozens of volunteers with the SouheganWatershed Association began its 23rd year of testing Tuesday on the entire length of the Souhegan River and the local section of the Merrimack River between Manchester and Tyngsborough.

This is the first of six tests that will be done this summer. Results will be posted on the SWA website at www.souheganriver.org/results as soon as they are available. Individual results will be posted on Facebook also for weekly tests at Watson Park, a popular swimming hole on the Souhegan.

Monitors found both rivers running higher than usual for this time of year. Not surprising since this has been an extremely rainy spring. One has to go back to April before finding the rivers flowing at their historic, expected flows. Tuesday’s flow was about 1 ½ times greater than usual. And, of course, it was drizzling for our first test. About a half inch of rain fell just before the tests, which may have affected the results. That amount generally wouldn’t make much of a difference, but with the ground completely saturated, it may have. At any rate, the E, coli counts were fairly high on the Souhegan. SWA uses a level of 88 colonies of bacteria as the cutoff for clean water. This is the level the state uses for a monitored swimming beach. Most of the sites along the Souhegan exceeded this level; only the upper Souhegan and the mouth of the Souhegan were acceptable.

E. coli levels less than 88 are completely clean and would be satisfactory for swimming at a public beach. 88 to 126 is OK for healthy adults; 126 to 406 is poor and not recommended for swimming by SWA but would still meet state standards. Higher than 406 is not acceptable for swimming at all. High bacteria levels can cause swimmers ear and gastrointestinal problems, especially in children or vulnerable adults.

There are still opportunities for additional volunteers to claim a site. Milford and Merrimack have open sites. There are two sites that require a boat, one in Manchester and the other in Nashua.

Monitors at certain sites also noted and picked up lots of trash that’s accumulated since last year. A beaver was spotted on the Merrimack and lots of ducks near the Mass border. Mosquitoes, however, were the animals that all monitors noted. Lots of them out early. Also pollen was heavy enough to color eddies yellow. Water temperatures were quite comfortable at 20C/68F. This annual prize, consists of a Silver Paul Revere Bowl, with an engraved plaque base, a communal plaque bearing the name/s of the winner/s which is hung on a wall on the second Floor of the Amherst Town Hall, and a beribboned, dated medallion to be worn when the recipients are invited to march as a group, in the annual Memorial Day and July 4th parades.

In January of 1975, the late Margaret (Peggy) Bergin Princi and her husband Michael, came from West Barnstable, on Cape Cod, with their three sons to visit her brother Peter Bergin and his wife Ann Connell Bergin, and their daughters, Caitlin and Courtney in Amherst, NH. They all took their children over to Heaton’s Pond on Dodge Rd. This was a privately owned pond whose owners, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Heaton, welcomed local residents to come and ice skate. The Heatons lit the pond for nighttime skating and even piped in music! So impressed was Peggy that she said to Peter, “Your Jaycee Club ought to give an award to this couple, like they do in Lexington for the annual Citizen of the Year.” (Peggy, Peter and Ann had grown up in Lexington, MA, where annually, after the Massachusetts holiday “Patriot’s Day Parade”, the local Lions Club presented the “White Tricorne Hat Award” to the “Citizen of the Year” who had given much volunteer time to the town.)

Peter raised the subject at the next Amherst Jaycee meeting, and the members decided to create the award. They named it The Powder Horn and Musket Prize in honor of the soldiers from Amherst who fought in the Revolutionary War. The criteria were simple. The award would be given annually to an Amherst resident, who, through his or her VOLUNTEER work, had earned the title of “Citizen of the Year” by making Amherst a better place in which to live.

The Jaycees decided that the award would be in two parts. 1. The recipient/s would be given a silver Paul Revere Bowl on a wooden base. On the base there was placed an engraved plate bearing the winner’s name. 2. Additionally, there would be a communal plaque with each winner’s name engraved upon it, to be placed in the Amherst Town Hall. The Jaycees would present the prize on Independence Day, as part of the town’s grand fete, during the July Fourth Post-Parade Ceremonies, held on the steps of the Brick School. These ceremonies were later moved to the Reviewing Stand on the Large Common, built in 1976 for the Bi-Centennial, and the ceremonies have been held there ever since, now on a new Reviewing Stand.

The award would be presented at the very end of the post-parade ceremonies, as the final climactic event.

The Jaycees published Nomination Forms, in the local newspapers, and also mailed them to every civic group in town. Clubs and organizations nominated their group’s choice, while citizens used the newspaper forms to nominate their individual choices as well. Winners were not chosen on the basis of how many nomination forms were received for them, but rather by their list of accomplishments.

Mr. Heaton, the inspiration for the award, received the prize in 1986. The first recipient, in 1975, was Roy Maston, who founded the Amherst Rescue Squad, now EMS. Additionally, several couples have been given the award.

A few awards were presented posthumously.

In 1976, Ann Connell Bergin, July 4th Chair, decided to annually invite every winner to march in the Dignitary Division of both the Memorial Day and Independence Day Parades, and sit upon the Reviewing Stand, during post parade ceremonies, to be introduced every year. She also began the practice of presenting medallions on ribbons to be worn by the winners in the parades as a means of identifying each recipient. When Creeley (Buck) Buchanan retired as the July 4th Parade Marshal, Ms. Bergin began having the C.O.T. Y. winner from the previous year, serve as Parade Marshal. The subsequent and current July 4th Chairs have kept up these Citizen Of The Year traditions each year.

The Jaycees evolved into the Amherst Mens’ Club and presented the award for 19 years from 1975, until 1993, when they disbanded. The Amherst Lions Club took over the presentation of the prize in time for the 1994 presentation; they continue to present the award to this day.

Amherst School Board – June 4 Recap To the editor:

While the school year came to a close, the Amherst School Board continues to meet and is warming up for our summer work.

• Social-Emotional: The Board approved 7th and 8th graders taking a Youth Risk Behavior Survey from the CDC. Data received from this anonymous survey will help further our social emotional work and inform our health curriculum. In making the decision to participate The Board took feedback from the community and the administration into account.

While families are permitted to opt their students out of the survey if desired, the more students that take the survey the better. Families will be notified more about the survey before it is administered to students in the fall.

• Class Size: Last year three kindergarten families elected to send their students to the Mont Vernon Village School (MVVS). The Board voted, in June, to allow these families to continue to send these 3 students as long as the Mont Vernon School District allows. The Board also approved these families to send younger siblings to the MVVS provided there is at least one year of overlap between two sibling students.

The Board is not, however, allowing new families to attend MVVS. The Board’s rationale focused on three key factors. One, the Board appreciates the willingness of the three existing families to help alleviate the class size issue and respects their need for continuity. Two, the Board is unwilling to forego revenue by offsetting tuition, which would happen if additional Amherst students attended the MVVS. Three, the Board cannot justify risking possible additional increased financial burdens that could arise due to out-of-district costs for special education services, should those costs arise. Alternatively, the Board, with administration help, is continuing to evaluate enrollments and adjust existing staff to meet the needs of our students within the approved budget and within the expected revenue.

• Curriculum: The Board approved a new reading curriculum for Grade 1. That curriculum was piloted this year by several teachers who reported great successes. The Board is pleased to see another well-researched, standards-based, teacher-tested curriculum being presented under the leadership of Assistant Superintendent Christine Landwehrle.

• Academic Achievement: Results from the spring NWEA testing for Grades K through 2 revealed very strong achievement. Raw scoring, or RIT, show our students perform better in reading than 83 to 92 percent and better in math than 86 to 97 percent compared to other students in more than 9,500 schools across 145 countries who participate.

Relative to fall scores, our kindergarten students significantly exceeded growth projections for both reading and math, Grade 1 students nearly met both growth projections, and Grade 2 students lagged a bit in reading growth but met growth projections for math. The administration has committed to study these scores and make adjustments to best ensure our students are growing at their highest potential. Their commitment is not new, and the Board appreciates their continued attention to these important metrics.

• PACE: SAU 39 has made great strides with PACE over the last few years. So much so that Amherst Middle School (AMS) feels that they have outgrown PACE as an accountability measure. Next year, Amherst will continue as a PACE district with Grades 3 and 4 participating in PACE for accountability (in lieu of the state assessment, NHSAS). AMS will not be participating for accountability, meaning students will take NHSAS instead of participating in the PACE assessment, while we work with PACE to provide more flexibility to grade levels around the common tasks and rubrics. AMS will still be moving forward with performance assessments, competency education, and their new grading system, but will be taking a year off of using PACE for state level reporting.

• Citizens in Schools: Terri Behm has taken on the role of finding ways to stimulate more citizen involvement in the schools during the school day and after school. Terri is working with Jesse Haarlander, AMS Assistant Principal, Tiffany Maher and Mary Epstein, AMS Library staff members, this summer to brainstorm ideas and get this program up and running. In the short-term, some ideas include inviting citizens into the elementary schools to read with students and having volunteers at AMS to introduce new library materials and engage in reading groups or clubs. This initiative is just getting started, with more opportunities to come. Please reach out to Terri at tbehm@sprise.com with ideas for the Citizens in Schools program.

Our next meeting will be held on June 27 at the SAU building, 1 School Street, at 5:30pm. This will be a short meeting starting with a public hearing to receive money for summer training and moving into a meeting where we hope to close out the Clark Septic project. Elms Return to the Town Common On June 11th, the Department of Public Works planted two large disease-resistant American elms on the town common. The planting of these trees restores elms to the Amherst Common, which once surrounded town hall in the 1900s.

In 1928, Dutch Elm Disease (DED) came into North America, carried by elm logs shipped from Holland. Before the disease arrived, there were an estimated 77 million North American elms. The American elm was once the most majestic trees planted in many public spaces, and were often used along roadsides, making a stately avenue of elms. By sixty years later, 75% of American elms had died, leaving many Elm Streets devoid of elms.

Dutch Elm Disease is a fungal disease that causes damage to a tree’s vascular system, and is spread by the elm bark beetle.

It was noted, after many years, that in several of the early areas hard-hit by DED, an occasional tree, here and there, continued to survive and prosper. These were the source

of disease-resistant trees, and many particular cultivars were tested in the 1990s by the USDA, as part of their elm trials, to determine best disease resistance and form.

The trees now planted on the common are the ‘Princeton’ American elm cultivar, since they are grown from cuttings taken from descendants of original tree, found in Princeton NJ. In the USDA testing, both ‘Princeton’ and ‘Valley Forge’ were found to have excellent disease resistance in New England, with up to 95% disease resistance in trials. This is a far higher level of resistance than testing has demonstrated in the better-known ‘Liberty’ elm. In 2005, ninety ‘Princeton’ Elms were planted on Pennsylvania Avenue, near the White House.

The trees were pre-ordered in early spring from the Amherst Garden Center, and were purchased by a member of the Amherst Conservation Commission, and donated to the town. Thanks go to the DPW for their excellent planting work!

Rotary Club Donates Funds to Church Capital Campaign The Milford Rotary Club has generously donated funds to the Congregational Church of Amherst capital campaign for the preservation and renovation of key components of the Church and parsonage.

Part of the donation was made from the Robert F. Jackson Memorial Fund, in honor of Robert (a long-time resident of Amherst, local architect and member of Rotary) and his mother Elizabeth, an active member of the Church for many years.

The donation provided for the planting of two sugar maple trees, to the west of the Church sanctuary between the Church and the parsonage. Mr. Jackson often incorporated maple trees in his design renderings and promoted their use in places where the public could enjoy them. Take a moment to walk by and see the new additions, which will hopefully become a bright fall addition to our colonial village landscape.

The Stone Cape on Christian Hill

BY KATRINA HOLMAN AMHERST – The 2019 suncatcher depicts an historic Amherst house with unique architecture, namely the Stone Cape at 55 Christian Hill Road. This glass collectible in a lovely green is the 31st in the Historic Amherst series made by a N.H. craftsman, commissioned by Nipmugs, a local chapter of The Questers. Proceeds from suncatcher sales go to the restoration and preservation of historic local buildings and artifacts. The suncatcher will be on sale at the Nipmugs table on the Village Common on the Fourth of July; or call Anne Krantz at 673-9684.

Quarried granite blocks form the front of the featured house as well as the back wall.

The side walls are made of brick. There is no other house like it in Amherst. The fine details of the design indicate that it must have been a labor of love by a skilled stonemason.

The corners have an interesting “dovetailing” effect between the granite and brick. A line of vertical bricks forms a “dentil molding” beneath the roofline of the facade.

But the deed evidence is clear that Langdon Smith’s land was split off from former Rev. Jeremiah Barnard homestead farm. The Crosby farm was abutter on the east side of the Barnard farm, so the confusion may stem from the proximity. Mr. & Mrs. Langdon Smith probably did live on Crosby land BEFORE Smith bought the Stone Cape, possibly with Mrs. Smith’s widowed mother (who died in 1850) and/or Mrs. Smith’s brother (given census and tax record data showing that Langdon Smith was a resident of Amherst 1840-1846 and again after selling his farm in Mont Vernon in 1850 when the Amherst census lists Smith, albeit with misspelled first name, just before brotherin-law Joseph Crosby).)

Let’s follow the deed chain back to when this farm got split off from the Barnard farm. In 1834, the court-appointed guardian for Rev. Jeremiah Barnard (1750-1835), Amherst’s second Congregational minister (ordained in 1780) who had become “incapable of managing his affairs” due to “mental alienation,” initiated the sale of his former homestead on Christian Hill. The next owner-occupant after Rev. Barnard’s family was one Jesse C. Patterson (17961859), who bought the 117-acre farm (with house at 61 Christian Hill Road) in Feb. 1836 for $3000. Jesse was married to Atarah Burnham in Danvers in 1823. (Jesse had been a tavern/inn-keeper in Danvers, Mass., 1825-1826.

Just before moving to Amherst, Jesse was a yeoman in New Boston, N.H., his birthplace, where two sons died tragically young in 1833, one at age 1 of “fits” and the other of dysentery at 3 and 1/2 years of age.) While living in Amherst, Jesse’s family comprised six or seven children, the youngest being a son born in Amherst in 1842. Jesse was an active farmer in Amherst until 1844, raising a variety of livestock, including a stud boar, and growing wheat on Christian Hill. Take advantage of our American Red Cross swim lessons. Our lead instructors are ARC Water Safety certified.

Swim lessons are scheduled for a 30 minute time period between 10am-2:00PM, Monday - Thursday at Baboosic Lake. Classes will be held in the rain but not during a thunder storm. Friday will be the makeup date in the event classes are canceled Monday-Thursday.

Private Swim Lessons: One on one in water instruction will be provided and our instructor will work with you to meet your swimming goals. We will NOT be able to split a lesson between 2 students. This program is available for all ages and abilities. Space is limited and will be available on a first come first serve basis, based on the availability of instructors. Our team is a seasonal swim team offering coaching, technique and instruction for all ages and abilities. Swimmers do not need to have a season’s pass in order to swim on the Baboosic Lake team. The goal of our team is to provide every member an opportunity to improve swimming skills in order to achieve success at his or her level of ability, make new friends and have a great deal of fun!

Swim Team is open to all ability levels ages 4 to 19. Participants must be able to float on their front.

Swim team opens with the first practice on June 18th. Practice is 9am -10 am Monday through Friday at Baboosic Lake. The meet sched-

Adult Trip to Kingdom Trails

Enjoy the some of the best mountain biking in the country while spending time with fellow riders both on and off the trail. Accommodations will be at the Kingdom Farm Lodge where you will be able to relax, shower, and clean/fix your bike after a long days ride. We will take care of breakfast and Saturday Night’s dinner.

Riders can arrive anytime on Friday and ride. Or come up after work. Friday night we will have a meet up at Mike’s Tiki Bar located in the heart of East burke and eat at one of the many food trucks located in the parking area. Saturday and Sunday will be all about riding.

Many of us have a lot of riding time at Kingdom so if you need some advice on where to ride or where to have lunch, we will be sure to guide you in that direction.

After Breakfast on Sunday, we will plan to get one last ride in and folks can head home when they need to.

Children’s Programming at the Amherst Town Library “A Universe of Stories� is the theme this summer in the Children’s Room at the Amherst Town Library. It’s so important to make sure our kids maintain their reading skills over the long vacation, and here at the library, we make it fun!!!

The 2019 Summer Reading materials will be available as soon as school is out and activities and events will begin on Monday, June 17. The program will run for eight weeks, and will culminate on Friday, August 9th with an Ice Cream Social at the Congregational Church.

As in the past, our young participants will keep a reading log and will chart the time they spend reading, with stops along the way to earn stickers, free books, and prizes. Our babies will be earning stickers everytime they attend the Little Listeners program. There will be many interesting programs offered for kids, teens, and adults, too, so make sure to visit the library often, no matter what your age!

ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS:

SUMMER STORYTIMES (no registration required): Storytime at Joshua’s Park with Miss Lisa (all ages welcome, with stories geared to kids ages 3 to 6). Pack a morning snack and head on down to the park for some stories. Mondays at 9:30am. From June 24 to August 5, weather permitting.

It’s About Conservation

After nearly eight decades of being in the woods and on trails, I am forced to hang up the back pack and pick up a walking stick. The mind; however, remains on the trail with the desire to educate and encourage others, especially families, to be there.

So I sit here in my base camp (arm chair) reading about other hikers and their adventures – some good, some not so good.

The Appalachian Mountain Club publishes Appalachia, a journal of mountaineering and conservation. It regularly carries reports of on-the-trail accidents with analyses of what caused and what could have been done to avoid the situation. In my scouting days, I would use these reports with the scouts. By first describing the event and then guiding them in their analysis of how it could have been prevented.

Every week the papers carry accounts of NH Fish & Game Department volunteers being called to rescue hikers in trouble or lost on NH trails. I still find myself reading each article and thinking about how the accident could have been avoided. What

ed only one boy, their 14-year-old son, it was listed as having 1 person employed in agriculture and 2 persons employed in manufacturing or a trade. Hmmm – what might that trade have been?

As critical as deeds are to the history of an old house, in this case the construction date is revealed in a newspaper advertisement: “FOR SALE, FARM situated in the westerly part of Amherst, 1 1/2 miles from the Plain, containing about 58 acres of excellent land, about 15 of which is covered with an excellent growth of wood, the same being the easterly half of the farm, formerly owned by the Rev. Mr. Barnard. On it there is a house built the last year, 36 feet by 28 feet, of stone and brick, all well finished, the work being done by the day. Attached to the house is a new wooden building 25 by 18 feet. Water is brought in lead pipe from a never failing fountain. ‌ If the above farm is not disposed of at private sale before the 11th day of March next, it will then be sold at Auction at 11 o’clock. ‌ For further particulars inquire of Jesse C. Patterson, near the premises, or of N. P. C. PATTERSON, Danvers, Mass. Feb. 20, 1840.â€? (Farmers’ Cabinet, 13 March 1840, p. [4].)

It’s quite possible and plausible that Jesse C. Patterson, owner of the land, did the stonework for the new house himself in 1839, because there is evidence that he worked as a mason: In 1841 the Town of Amherst hired him to build the Grave Yard Wall (payment recorded in 1841/2 annual town report) and in 1855 his occupation was “stonemason� (1855 Massachusetts census of South Danvers)!

But why has another Patterson, far away in Danvers, signed the sale notice? Well, Jesse divided his Amherst farm in 1840, selling the easterly half “with the buildings

The trails maintained by the Amherst Conservation Commission trail stewards are as safe as they can be made. We are not on the slopes of Mt. Washington where half as many hikers have succumbed as on the routes up Mt. Everest. And, as far as I know, ACC trails have claimed no lives. Nevertheless, a young hiker’s day may be spoiled with a long-lasting negative impression of walking in a natural setting by a parent’s failure to plan: carrying snacks, water, an extra jacket, or a hard-copy of the planned outing route.

All of this and more applies to even a day trip to the North Country.

The Boy Scout motto speaks to adult trip planners, too, “Be Prepared�. The song sung by the travelling salesmen in the Music Man that you gotta know the territory, isn’t bad, either.

New Boston, N.H.), a merchant of Danvers, Mass., for $2150, thus creating a new lot with land on both sides of the road and the Stone Cape at 55 Christian Hill Road. Although the deed was inked in August 1840, N. P. C. Patterson first advertised the property with the house “built of stone and brick� for sale in Feb. 1840. Evidently there were no buyers, for he attempted again to auction off the property in March 1843 and finally did so successfully in March 1844.

N. P. C. Patterson never resided in Amherst (he was taxed as a non-resident during his years of ownership), and unlike his brother did not move around frequently.

Clement Patterson and wife Elizabeth Reith (1808-1895), who married May 1832 in Danvers, Mass., and by 1840 had three young children all born in Danvers, resided in the South Danvers section which would break away from Danvers in 1855 and be renamed Peabody in 1868. N. P. C. Patterson’s occupation was victualler (or provision dealer) until retiring in late 1860s.

He died in Peabody, his death record listing farmer as his occupation, and is buried in Danvers.

So who was the first to occupy Amherst’s Stone Cape? I bet it was Jesse C. Patterson & family.

The Amherst tax invoice of 1843 includes among taxpayers who were residents: Patterson Jesse C. – 1 poll, valuation land $1000/bldgs $440; 7 cows worth $142, 2 sheep worth $6; town/county/state taxes $8.78; highway taxes $4.25; school[house] tax $2.93. This must have been for the western half of the former Rev. Barnard farm with house at 61 Christian Hill Road. In the same tax invoice, among non-resident taxpayers, can be found: “Land

This must have been for Stone Cape and farm at 55/56 Christian Hill Road. The entry for absentee landlord Patterson is intriguing. Usually “occupied� means living in house, but since Jesse owned the house next door, it might only mean that he was using the farm land. Notice that the assessed value of the Stone Cape is higher than that of the older two-story Barnard farmhouse.

Jesse C. Patterson left Amherst in 1844, the same year that his brother finally sold the Stone Cape with its farm for $1237.50, although Jesse would not sell the former Barnard house until the following year.

(After leaving Amherst, Jesse C. Patterson & family moved to Lowell, where he worked as a teamster; then around 1850 the family moved back to Danvers, where Jesse died in Dec. 1859.)

That’s as far as the documentary evidence takes us, but my theory is that Jesse & family were living in the new house built of brick and stone for four or five years from its completion until they left town – perhaps renting out the old house.

Maybe Jesse intended the Stone Cape from the beginning as a new home for his family or maybe the Stone Cape was intended to serve as a model of his skill as a mason.

My guess is that Jesse ran into financial difficulties during the time he was building the Stone Cape, and that his younger brother helped him out by buying it. Nevertheless, it remains as his legacy and a unique contribution to Amherst’s historic architecture.

Soprano, Pianist, Next Up in Classical Concert Series NASHUA –Internationally acclaimed soprano Darlene Dobish will appear at the Nashua Public Library on Wednesday, July 10, at noon, accompanied by Sima Kustanovich, one of the Northeast’s most sought-after pianists.

Entertainment

Dobish, a native of Massachusetts who lives in Germany, has sung the Queen of the Night in over 200 performances, and in the crossover event, “Breakin’ Mozart,” with Christoph Hagel and the DDC Break Dancing Company.

Other engagements include the NDR Chorus, soubrette at Theater Neustrelitz, and numerous lyric coloratura roles at Opernloft, Hamburg.

Pianist Sima Kustanovich has performed at acclaimed venues such as BargeMusic in New York, the Courchevel Chamber Music Festival in France, and the Royal Conservatory Chamber Music Series in Toronto, as well as in Sweden, Hungary, Austria, Italy, and Estonia. At the famed Leningrad Opera and Ballet Theater, she worked intensively with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Natalia Makarova. July Exhibits at the JCC The Jaffrey Civic Center will host three new exhibits for the month of July. The Auditorium Gallery will feature the mixed media work of Fitzwilliam resident, William Barefoot. Bill has decades of experience in different art media including watercolor, pastels, acrylics, oils, and pen and ink. His main focus is watercolor because it allows him to use his drawing skills as well as the layering of color. His early works featured animals and people, and he later moved to landscapes. Bill studied and received degrees at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Indiana University of Pennsylvania and The Maryland Institute, Baltimore.

The Display Case Gallery will feature oil paintings by Susan Heuck Allen of Harrisville. Susan Heuck Allen studied painting at Amherst College and the Cincinnati Art Academy. This is her first show in New Hampshire, the subject of much of her work, “The Many Faces of Mount Monadnock” will showcase a selection of Allen’s landscapes of the mountain in oil, watercolor, and monotype. Allen is a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Classics, Brown University and resides in Providence and on Silver Lake in Harrisville for almost three decades. She has taught at the Rhode Island School of Design, Smith College, Providence College, Tufts University, and Yale University as well as on a ship that circumnavigated the globe in a semester,

known as Semester at Sea. “ The upstairs Cunningham Gallery will feature the work of Heidi Hadley. Heidi was born in Peterborough and raised in the Lakes Region. She graduated from Mary Hitchcock School of Nursing and spent her professional life as a Registered Nurse, starting at Monadnock Community Hospital in the emergency room. She also served as a hospice nurse, private duty nurse and office nurse. Heidi learned to sew as a 4-H project. As a young adult, she became interested in quilting as a way to use her creativity and relax. Since that time, she has made hundreds of quilts, table runners, and wall hangings. Following her retirement, Heidi established her business, One of a Kind Quilts by Heidi. She has participated in numerous craft shows and has a site on Etsy (https://www.etsy. com/shop/OneofaKindQuiltsH94).

An Opening Reception for the three exhibits will be held on Saturday, July 6th from 5 pm to 7 pm.

Floral Still Life Workshop at the Jaffrey Civic Center The Jaffrey Civic Center will host renowned New England artist, Tatiana Yanovskaya-Sink in July for a 2 day workshop on Floral Still Life.

The workshop will be held both Saturday, July 6th and Sunday, July 7th from 10 am to 5 pm. The cost of the workshop is $225.

The class will focus primarily on painting fresh flowers with combinations of still life objects. Students will be introduced to painting Floral Still Life by studying color saturations, temperature and shapes of various flowers and various shades of green leaves. Although, students are encouraged to paint directly from life setting, we will discuss the possibilities of finishing the paint-

ing from the photo image, understanding color temperature aspect and various approaches to start the painting. Souhegan Valley Quilters’ Guild 2019 Mini Quilts themed “LOVE”

AMHERST – Once again the Souhegan Valley Quilters’ Guild will be on the Amherst Green on July Fourth from 9-12:30 PM. We will be selling raffle tickets for 24 mini quilts, all approximately 20”x20,” the perfect wallhanging size. The proceeds support the non-profit Guild’s many charities such as The Stork Project, The New England Quilt Museum, The

Animal Rescue League of N.H. in Bedford and the Guild’s own Comfort Closet which provides quilts for neighbors going through challenging times. New members are always welcome. PLYMOUTH – The New Hampshire Music Festival, in residency at Plymouth State University (PSU), has announced its 67th summer concert season. From July 2 to August 1, the organization will perform 10 concerts at PSU’s Silver Center for the Arts and give 10 performances in surrounding communities, including Holderness, Laconia, Waterville Valley and other venues in Plymouth. Honoring the tradition of classical music while exploring new artistic paths, musicians from around the world will visit Plymouth to perform wellknown classics and contemporary works.

The 2019 summer season also marks the first for New Hampshire Music Festival Executive Director, Lucinda Williams.

“I joined the New Hampshire Music Festival at just the right time – gearing up for our incredible 67th concert season,” said Williams. “Our performances will feature beautiful, challenging music performed by talented musicians from across the country. We are excited to bring this music to life for audiences at the Silver Center and in our performances throughout the region.”

New Hampshire Music Festival will host its opening night concert on July 5, highlighting music from Antonín Dvořák, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and Ludwig van Beethoven and featuring the Cuban violinist Andrés Cárdenes as a soloist.

The concert on July 11 will spotlight clarinets, with music from Hector

Berlioz, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Liszt. Performances will also spotlight composer Ittai Shapira on July 18, and Johann Sebastian Bach, Richard Strauss and Mozart on July 25. The season will conclude with an Orchestral Murmuring concert on August 1, with guest conductor Alyssa Wang and world-renowned piano soloist Misha Dichter.

Strong collaboration with community partners is a hallmark of the New Hampshire Music Festival, allowing the organization to provide transformative music experiences to patrons of all ages in a variety of settings. New Hampshire Music Festival will perform several times at Waterville Valley, including a musical petting zoo on July 2, and “Fresh Fares & Musical Airs” on July 13, at Curious George Cottage. The organization will also host “Music in the Mountains,” individual ensembles held outdoors on July 8 in Holderness and July 27 in Meredith. Every Sunday in July, Festival musicians will participate in “Caffeinated Classics” at Café Monte Alto in Plymouth at 10:30 a.m., sharing classical music with patrons. On July 14 and July 28, New Hampshire Music Festival will perform concerts at the Taylor Community in Laconia.

AMHERST – When a Russian rocket lofted Sputnik 1 into orbit on October 4, 1957, the worldwide reaction was a mixture of awe and apprehension. The Space Age and the Space Race had begun. To an American public that had grown accustomed to our country’s growing global primacy, Sputnik’s launch was a traumatic wake-up call. Come to the Amherst Town Library on Wednesday, July 17, 7:00-8:30PM for a retrospective that will explore the events leading up to Sputnik’s launch, the political fallout that led to America’s response (Explorer 1), the formation of NASA, and the crucial role that amateur astronomers played in tracking the first satellites.

Presenter Kelly Beatty has been explaining the science and wonder of astronomy to the public since 1974. An award-winning writer and communicator, he specializes in planetary science and space exploration as Senior Editor for Sky & Telescope magazine. Beatty enjoys sharing his passion for astronomy with a wide spectrum of audiences, from children to professional astronomers, and you’ll occasionally hear his interviews and guest commentaries on National Public Radio

and The Weather Channel.

In addition to being a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing (July 20, 1969), this presentation is a perfect way to celebrate “A Universe of Stories”, the theme of the 2019 Summer Reading Program. Amherst Celebrates Fifty Years Amherst Fourth of July Celebration

Wednesday, July 3, 2019 For the past fifty years, the Town of Amherst has come together to celebrate Independence Day.

Plan to join the fun this year starting on the evening of July 3rd and continuing through the afternoon of July 4th. The Amherst Fourth of July Celebration will begin on July 3 at Souhegan High School with an Amherst Town Band concert, fireworks, food, and a variety of events — some old and some new! CoChairs Kim Ayers and Leslie Bennett have worked hard to make this a great start to the Fourth Celebration. The fireworks will be set off from the back baseball field as usual. Stadium bleacher seats WILL be available, but the track and field will be locked to protect the artificial turf.

Rain Date: The rain date for the fireworks will be Saturday, July 6.

Information about a rain postponement will be on WMUR. Handicap Parking: Handicap parking will be available in the lot

by the high school annex. The road to the annex parking lot will be closed to the general public.

Bathrooms: The bathrooms near the stadium entrance will be available to the public along with two Porta Potties.

RE/MAX Tethered Hot Air Balloon Rides: The RE/MAX balloon will return to provide rides from 6:00 to 8:00 PM or until the gas runs out! Children must be accompanied by an adult and an adult will need to sign a release form for everyone under 18 years of age. Proceeds will be divided between SHARE and the Fourth of July Committee. Suggested donations are $5.00 for those 17 and under, $10 for those 18 years old and up, and $25.00 for a family of five or fewer.

Hopefully the weather will cooperate so that neither rain nor wind will keep the balloon from flying. If the balloon is temporarily grounded, those standing in line will be given preference should conditions change and the balloon rides are resumed.

Fun Family Games: The Amherst Recreation Department will host free games for families including cornhole from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Roaming Railroad: The Roaming Railroad will be giving rides in the Annex parking lot for $1.00 a person from 6:00 to 8:30 PM. Sponsorship of this fun activity is provided by Rymes Propane.

Face Painting: Krickey the Clown will be back with her friend, Katie Leishman! They will paint as many faces as they can from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. Be advised that the line will close at 7:15.

Their lively, patriotic music will begin at 8:15 PM and last until the start of the fireworks. Lisa Hansen is the Director of this talented group of local musicians.

Food: Hungry? Enjoy some locally-sourced pizza. For those who prefer hamburgers and hot dogs, the Amherst Fire Department members will be happy to oblige!

The Fourth of July Committee will be selling drinks, Jake’s ice cream and slush to help support the cost of the celebration. Plan to bring your chairs, enjoy the performers, and have a picnic while you wait for the fireworks!

Glo-Necklaces: Everyone needs a glo-necklace on the Fourth of July!

The committee will be selling them at the Information Booth for $1.00.

Commemorative Pins: These very special pins will be available for purchase at the Information Booth.

Fireworks: When darkness falls, Atlas PyroVision Entertainment under the guidance of Mike Buffelli and his volunteers will be putting on a fireworks show to delight spectators. Mike has requested that there be no drones flying at this time for safety reasons. The fireworks are being sponsored once again by the generous support of Granite State Credit Union.

Events for Thursday, July 4, Amherst Village The second half of the Fourth of July Celebration will take place on Thursday, July 4, in Amherst Village. This is the time for the big parade and the fun on the village green! Jennifer Eccleston, Parade Chair, and Gretchen Pyles, Village Green Chair, are gearing up to make sure that everything is in order!

Rain Date: The parade and activities on the village green will only be cancelled in case of thunder and lightning. Any cancellation will be on WMUR. There is no rain date.

Handicap Parking: Rolf Biggers has once again very generously offered the BMA Architectural Group parking lot at 12 Middle Street for handicap parking. There is handicap seating on the adjacent lawn facing the reviewing stand on Main Street.

Information: The volunteers at the committee’s Information Tent on the main walkway of the village green will answer questions you might have.

Bathrooms: Bathroom facilities are available in the Amherst Town Hall, the Congregational Church, and the Brick School. Access to handicap bathrooms is through the back door of the church. Inside the entrance, there is an elevator to the right that will go to the lower floor

where the bathrooms are located.

The Parade: The Parade will step off from Wilkins School at 10:00 a.m. The Bicycle Parade will start from Knight’s Field at the same time. Please note, due to safety concerns, there will no longer be a puppy parade. Katherine Lockwood, a Fourth of July veteran, will be announcing parade events again this year!

Parade Route: The parade route will start at Wilkins School, proceed up Boston Post Road, turn right on Foundry Street, left on Davis Lane, left on Main Street, and end at the town hall.

Parade vehicles other than the classic cars and floats on display will turn right immediately after the Amherst Town Hall and exit by way of Manchester Road. Classic cars and floats that are going to be on display will continue around the village green to designated parking areas.

Lions Club Children’s Bicycle Parade: It’s time for the crepe pa-

per! The Bicycle Parade will start at Knight’s Field which is located at the beginning of Main Street, two houses away from the town library. The bicycles will set off at 10:00 a.m. and travel down Main Street to the Amherst Town Hall. Judging will take place at 9:45. By law all bicycle riders must be wearing helmets.

Fire Engines: The main parade will be led by the Police and Fire Departments.

Dignitaries: Each year our state leaders are invited to march as New Hampshire dignitaries. State and local dignitaries including state representatives, and executive councilors, town administrators, school representatives and the Amherst selectmen will be marching.

Citizens of the Year: Following the dignitaries will be the Citizens of the Year riding in cars.

Classic Cars: Classic cars will assemble from 8:15 to 9:30 a.m. on New Boston Road opposite the Wilkins School. Period dress and U.S. flags are encouraged. The award categories will be Best Overall, Best Pre-WWII Car, Best Pre1968 Car, Best Convertible, Best Performance Car, Most Unusual, Exotic, or Interesting Car. At the end of the parade, the cars will be parked on the church side of the village green for the public to enjoy.

Bands, Special Events and Marchers: Bands will include The New Hampshire Police Association Pipes and Drums, the Campbell Highlanders, the Amherst Town Band, and the Fountain Square Ramblers. The Hudson Post Band, a regular in the Amherst parade since the parade began, will be playing on the village green before and during the parade. The parade will also include Mini-Kars, the First New Hampshire Regiment, Uncle Sam, Clowns, Flying Gravity Circus, Sons of the Civil War Auxiliary and much more!

Floats: Organizations with floats this year include the Amherst Democrats, Amherst Republicans, the Lions Club, the Amherst Garden Club and more. It is the local participation that puts an Amherst stamp on the parade and makes it unique! Floats may choose to be on display at the Civil War Monument after the parade.

The Village Green: Activities in the center of town will be varied: Historical Museums: Visit the Amherst Historical Museum on Middle Street behind the Brick School to enjoy some of Amherst’s best memorabilia. Children’s Activities: There will be farm animals, including sheep and miniature goats at the Middle Street end of the village green. Art Show and Old Time Craft Demonstrations: Stroll down Artists’ Alley along the church side of the village green and enjoy the amazing local fine art talent. There will also be old fashioned crafters on the green including Vinny Anfuso, blacksmith; Peter de Bruyn Kops, beekeeper; Laurel Jameson, spinner and weaver; and R.P. Hale, who will have a custom designed block print for the occasion. There will also be wooden toy making with Dave Valentine of the Amherst Makerspace.

Organization Booths: Local organizations are giving out information and items. The Amherst Conservation Commission, the Souhegan Valley Rides, the Amherst PTA, the Amherst Democrats, the Amherst Republicans, the Amherst Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, the Amherst Fire Department, CERT, the Preschool in the Village, the Granite State Taxpayers, the Congregational Church of Amherst, the Village Bible Church, AAUW, Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Venture Crew 2017, NH Junior Roller Derby, and League of Conservation Voters will be giving out information. Stop by their booths and learn more about the organizations that involve Amherst citizens! Messiah Lutheran Church will be back with cotton candy, and the Souhegan Valley Quilters Guild will raffle off mini quilts. For sale will be suncatchers by the Nipmugs; Amherst themed merchandise by the Historical Society; glassware and patriotic themed trinkets by the Capt. Josiah Bartlett Chapter of DAR; apparel by the Baboosic Lake Rowing Club; and water bottles by NH Sierra Club.

Along with the children’s activities, there will be a lot to see and do!

Food and Drink: The July Fourth Committee will be selling hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, slush, and drinks. The AAUW will be selling cold soups including gluten free options, the Amherst Democrats will be selling root beer, the Lions Club will be selling popcorn, Destination Imagination will be selling lemonade and homemade dog treats, and

Boy Scout Troop 613, Girl Scout Troop 21695 as well as Venture Crew 2017 will be holding bake sales. Once again, the Amherst Junior Women’s Club will be giving out refreshing watermelon.

Reviewing Stand Ceremony: National, state, and local dignitaries will be introduced, and the Amherst Lions Club President, Danielle Pray, will announce the Citizen of the Year.

Cups of soup will be $2 each and be sold from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Quarts will also be available for sale. ) The American Association of University Women is the nation’s leading voice promoting equity and education for women and girls. Come Celebrate Amherst’s 50th Fourth of July with the Conservation Commission

Please come celebrate Amherst’s 50th Fourth of July at the Conservation Commission’s booth on the Common. Starting at 9am until 12:30pm, commissioners will be available to introduce themselves to the public and explain a bit about what the ACC does. Visitors will be able to view conservation maps of the town, and pick up a town-wide trail map with additional information. One of the ACC’s strategies for conservation is to educate citizens about Amherst’s biodiversity and natural resources; engaging with members of the public during one of the town’s most exciting and celebratory events is a great step in achieving that goal.

New Suncatcher Features Unique Historic House:

The Stone Cape on Christian Hill

BY KATRINA HOLMAN AMHERST – The 2019 suncatcher depicts an historic Amherst house with unique architecture, namely the Stone Cape at 55 Christian Hill Road.

This glass collectible in a lovely green is the 31st in the Historic Amherst series made by a N.H. craftsman, commissioned by Nipmugs, a local chapter of The Questers.

Proceeds from suncatcher sales go to the restoration and preservation of historic local buildings and artifacts. The suncatcher will be on sale at the Nipmugs table on the Village Common on the Fourth of July; or call Anne Krantz at 673-9684.

Unique Architecture

Quarried granite blocks form the front of the featured house as well as the back wall. The side walls are

made of brick. There is no other house like it in Amherst.

The fine details of the design indicate that it must have been a labor of love by a skilled stonemason. The corners have an interesting “dovetailing” effect between the granite and brick. A line of vertical bricks forms a “dentil molding” beneath the roofline of the facade.

Who could the stonemason have been? For houses of this vintage in Amherst, it is usually impossible now to find out who the builder and craftsmen were, but one can normally find the original owner.

The fascinating history of the Stone Cape on Christian Hill was recently unearthed by Yours Truly and is being published here for the first time.

Amherst Girls U-10 Softball Team Wins Souhegan Valley Championship GOFFSTOWN – On one of the first full sunny days in recent memory, the Amherst Recreation U10 girl’s softball team won the June 6th Souhegan Valley Championship game against the U10 Goffstown 3 team, in Goffstown, 17-6.

Pitching for the Amherst ‘Stealers’ was Oriannah Dart, with three ice cold innings, followed by relief pitcher Eme Godin to close out the 4th. It was a full team effort for the Stealers, with solid catching performances by Bridget Hill and Violet Quesnel, which included a classic run down/tag out of an overly ea-

ger lead runner for the last out of the third inning. Amherst had solid batting from numerous players including Brielle Powers, Christiana Parks, and Mariellah Dart, whose 2 rbi single in the top of 4th inning sealed the win, allowing Christiana to slide into home for the 17th run. Maya Gascoyne, Emery Cardoso, Ella Russell and Sophia Proulx’s solid base running allowed the ‘Stealers’ to live up to their name with a combined 12 stolen bases!

Throughout the season the Stealers had strong pitching performances from Lizzy Green and Lanai Hick-

man leading up to and through the playoffs this week, beginning on Monday with a win over Bedford, followed by beating the Goffstown 1 team on Wednesday night.

As one of the younger teams in the league, expectations were low heading into the season. Though the rainy spring did not allow for many practices to be held, the girls continued to get better every day, making the coaching staff of Michelle Hickman, Maureen Montanus, Chris Parks and Obadiah Dart extremely proud. Watch out for these girls next year!

Six Souhegan Lacrosse Players Chosen for Division 1 All State Team

Souhegan’s Trudel Shines at New England Track and Field Championships!

Jack Manning and Tyler Hall were among six Souhegan High School lacrosse players selected by the NHIAA to the Division 1 Boys AllState team. Manning and Hall are two time senior captains and were selected to the First Team, while fellow senior captains Nick Jordan and John Lohnes were selected to the Second Team. Junior Curtis Redd was also a Second Team selection, while sophomore Luke Manning was selected as an Honorable Mention.

Led by third year head Coach Keith Bertrand, the 2019 edition of

Souhegan Boys Lacrosse finished with their most successful season since 2016, finishing the regular season with a 12-5 record and ranked fourth in New Hampshire, winning their quarterfinal matchup at Calvetti Field against Hanover before eventually falling to the Bishop Guertin Cardinals in the D1 state semi-final.

This year the boys lacrosse team was led by a talented senior class.

Tyler Hall will continue playing lacrosse at Clarkson University, Nick Jordan will play at Allegheny College in western Pennsylvania, and

John Lohnes will compete for a QB spot at Lake Forest College in Illinois. Other graduating seniors include Robert McGrath, Julian Whittier and Luke Civiello.

Jack Manning, the only four year starter who also played in the last 2016 state semi-final, will also represent Souhegan at the 27th Byrne Cup Twin State All-Star game sponsored by the Hanover Lions Club in Lebanon, NH on June 22nd.

He will continue playing lacrosse at Saint Michael’s College in Vermont.

Women’s Lacrosse Announces All-Conference Chloe Trudel places 6th in the NE Track & Field Championships

Souhegan High School freshman running sensation, Chloe Trudel, blazed to her fastest time ever, when it counted the most, as she captured 6th place and the final spot on the podium, to earn All-New England honors in the 3200M on Saturday at Thornton Academy in Maine. Entering the fast section of the 3200 as the number 12 seed, based on her 2nd place finish (11:00.32) at the New Hampshire Meet of Champions the week before, Chloe raced in a pack of runners for the first 6 laps, before exploding with a final 2:38 800M, to run a 5 second per-

sonal best time of 10:55.22! She was New Hampshire’s top finisher in the event. Kate Wiser of Pomperaug HS in CT took first place, followed

by Sophie Matson (Falmouth, MA), Mari Noble (Greenwich, CT), Olive Allen (Portsmouth, RI), and Daniella Grullon-Pena (Danbury, CT).

Other New Hampshire finishers in the 3200 were Sophia Reynolds (Merrimack Valley, 12th, 11:07.29), Rachel Hurley (Con-Val, 17th, 11:20.43), Megan Cross (Pinkerton, 24th, 11:41.48), and Anna Harnsberger (Bedford, 27th, 12:07.15).

New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, NC next weekend, and will also anchor (1600M leg) the Saber Track Cub Distance Medley at Nationals!

Souhegan’s 4x800M Relay team of Adrianna Zlotnick, Georgia Jones, Marissa Romano, and Arielle Zlotnick, also raced well, as they captured 11th place (9:52) in the field of NE’s top 36 teams, and were once again the top New Hampshire team! Georgia, Marissa, and Arielle will be joining Chloe in the Distance Medley at Nationals next weekend.

NEW LONDON – Colby-Sawyer College was well-represented on the 2019 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women’s Lacrosse All-Conference list, as announced today by the conference office.

Senior Brittany Ireland (Amherst, N.H.) was named to the AllGNAC First Team.

Ireland led the Chargers with 65 points, 32 assists, 55 ground balls and 45 draw controls. The 32 as-

sists ranks as second most in a single-season. She was fourth on the team with 33 goals and tied for third with 22 caused turnovers. She recorded at least one point in 16 of 17 games and had a stretch of fivestraight games with seven points. In GNAC games only, Ireland was fifth in assists (21), seventh in ground balls (34) and 10th in points (45). In all games, she was fourth in ground balls, fifth in assists and 11th in

points. Ireland was twice named GNAC Player of the Week. Ireland was named to the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) First Team last season after earning NAC Rookie of the Year and Second Team honors in 2017. Ireland finished her three-year Colby-Sawyer career ranked third in career assists with 65 and tied for ninth with 156 career points.

Souhegan High School Students Are Finalists for New Hampshire Short Film Festival AMHERST – Senior, Ashleigh Brewster and Junior, Lily Hipp, were chosen to enter their self-produced animated films in the 2019 New Hampshire High School Short Film Festival on May 18th at the Red River Theatre located in Concord, New Hampshire.

Both short films represent upwards of 100 hours of work, and display a evidence of character development, integration of sound, frame-by-frame animation and They were judged on their ability to effectively create a compelling story, originality, and technical execution.

Films that are submitted for consideration for the festival are screened and given a score by a se-

lection committee. All genres are considered and open to be entered into the festival. The awards for the show include one “Jury Award” (1st place), one “Jury Award runner up” (2nd Place), 3 “Jury Award Finalists”, and one “Public Service Announcement Award”.

Lily Hipp won the 1st place Jury Award for her short film “Kidnapped Cow Caper”. Lily was awarded with the trophy and brought it to Souhegan. The trophy will be housed at Souhegan until the next festival takes place in 2020.

SNHU Announces Winter 2019 Dean’s List

To be included on the Dean’s List, full-time students must have completed 12 or more credits for letter grades during a semester and achieved at least a 3.30 quality point average. Part-time students qualify with the accumulation of 12 or more credits for letter grades earning at least a 3.30 quality point average.

Industrial designer works with Souhegan engineering students to design problems

By Charles Swift Throughout Souhegan’s engineering program students work through the engineering design process by engaging with a variety of challenges. Most often, the teacher designs the challenges with clear rules and constraints. In a way, this means groups generally will create similar solutions. However, the final project for Advanced Engineering presents a different sort of challenge: come up with the design challenge in addition to creating a solution.

Finding a challenge to try and solve is a very difficult task. To help student learn techniques for setting up a design challenge the class reached out to local expert, Sooshin Choi, to run a design workshop.

Sooshin Choi is an Industrial Designer at DEKA Research and Development Corporation. In his career he has worked across the world designing everything from cars to furniture to robots. He recently joined Souhegan’s Advanced Engineering students to speak about design in the context of engineering.

History often depicts engineering and design as two distinctly different fields that struggle to work together. Mr. Choi helped students to see that these two fields need not only to understand each other but to have a deep symbiotic relationship in order for an innovative product to truly succeed. The workshop started with a presentation on design and its relationship to engineering in order to help students see the importance of blending the two fields.

A key concept in Mr. Choi’s presentation is the interplay of design and engineering with humans. Mr. Choi pointed out that both design and engineering are all about people. The design is what allows peo-

ple to engage with a product while engineering allows people have a product that works. It was through this link – the explicit linking of humans with technology – that Mr. Choi helped students understand how to design a problem.

Mr. Choi gave some examples of innovative design solutions that started with looking at how people interact with products. When people have difficulty interacting with a product – a person in a wheelchair, or someone with arthritic hands, for example, this presents both a design and engineering problem.

With this focus on the person, Mr. Choi invited students to think of a person who would have difficulty interacting with an everyday object.

The groups created a persona, defined the problem, and then created a drawing illustrating a possible design solution for that problem.

After Mr. Choi quickly modeled the process for the students, they were off into small groups to begin working. As students discussed, developed, and worked through their design challenge, Mr. Choi floated between the groups interacting with students and giving them feedback to push their design thinking.

At the end of the session students’ designs ranged from modified remote controls and computer mice to plastic tub handles.

Students will be taking what they have learned from the design workshop back to their Advanced Engineering class by incorporating these design skills into their “helping hands” project.

Souhegan’s engineering teachers have established a number of relationships with other local professionals and area companies as one of the many ways Souhegan continues to strive to be on the forefront of STEM education.

Endicott College Announces Local Dean’s List

Endicott College, the first college in the U.S. to require internships of its students, is pleased to announce its Spring 2019 Dean’s List students.

In order to qualify for the Dean’s List, a student must obtain a minimum grade point average of 3.5, receive no letter grade below “C,” have no withdrawal grades, and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits for the semester.

Beta Masters for Grades 7-9 (Beginner-Intermediate)

Imagine a small indie game studio that has 5 days to pitch, design and build a new video game. Following a real-world production cycle, YHA Beta Masters work in teams to develop an innovative game prototype from conception to completion. The Next Level Youth Developmental Basketball Camp is coming to Amherst this summer! Join us for a week of non stop basketball to tone your skills in the off season. Saber Hoops Basketball Camp For Boys

The 16th Annual Saber Hoops Basketball Camp is being run by Mike Facques (coach of back to back SHS Championships ‘03 and ‘04) and Will Facques (coach of a runner-up Amherst travel team, former SHS athlete and student at Virginia Military Institute).

The major goal of the camp is to help kids develop a passion for the great game of basketball and help them increase their skills. We will create a positive environment with the proper balance of instruction, competition, and fun.

In addition to teaching the fundamentals of the game, each day will feature time for game play.

PILATES is a full body-conditioning program comprised of a series of approximately 500 designed movements performed primarily on a mat. Pilates improves strength, flexibility, balance, control and

muscular symmetry. The rhythmic exercises promote elongated and toned muscles, and are noted for developing abdomen, lower back and buttocks strength, and create a strong body core. Our instructor is Cheryl SturtVail. She has 25 years experience with group exercise training and 10 with Zumba. She is able to break down all types of dance styles to make it easy for all people to enjoy and master.

Adult Programs Ukulele For Adults

Robert Allwarden, Music Specialist at Wilkins Elementary and local performer, will introduce adults to the basics of Ukulele!

Participants will learn the basic chords and receive sheet music with simple songs to begin playing. No prior knowledge is necessary, but if you have a beginning knowledge of ukulele, you are welcome to join us!

All materials will be provided, including ukuleles. If you have one, bring it along, but if you do not, he has plenty to lend. If you wish to practice at home, you will need your own instrument.

Definition of Tabletop Miniature Wargaming: Miniature wargaming is a form of wargaming which incorporates miniature figures, miniature armor and modeled terrain as the main components of play and which was first invented at the beginning of the 19th century in Prussia. Like other types of wargames, they can be generally considered to be a type of simulation game, generally about tactical combat, as opposed to computer and board wargames which have greater variety in scale.

Game masters will have larger than life “board” games setup depicting History, Fantasy and Science Fiction. Many of the terrain elements you will see on these boards can be (and some were) made right here in the Makerspace! If this event gains popularity We may add some workshops, round tables and presentations at future game days.

Holy Week at the Congregational Church Local residents are invited to join in the observances held during Holy Week, April 14 through 21, at the Congregational Church of Amherst UCC. The week will begin with the Palm Sunday 10:00 a.m. worship service which will conclude with a re-enactment of the Passion Story by the senior high youth.

The Maundy Thursday 7:30 p.m. service will include the rite of Holy Communion and a Tenebrae (shadows) service, symbolizing the fading loyalty of Jesus’ disciples as they betray him, deny him, then flee for their lives.

On Good Friday, members will join with other area churches at 3:00 p.m. for an outdoor ecumenical Walking the Way of the Cross service. This prayerful walk will follow the NH Black Heritage Trail in Milford, beginning in Bicentennial Park.

Easter Sunday observances will begin with a sunrise service on Amherst Common in front of the church at 6:00 a.m.

The youth of the church will play a key role in this simple and powerful service.

Docents will be on hand to give tours and answer questions.

The museum, located on the sec-

ond floor of the Town Hall, opened twenty-nine years ago in 1990.

There is no charge to visit though donations are accepted.

With families in mind, interactive displays this season include visiting the Spinning Room and following the process of taking raw wool from sheep (no REAL sheep in the museum!) and handling the tools used in the process to create a sweater. Also on display are items

to ponder in the “What is it? What is it used for?” exhibit.

Other exhibits this year include three World War II officer’s army uniforms worn by historical society member Peter Ecklund’s father.

Captain Leif Paul Ecklund completed Ordinance Officer Candidate School in Aberdeen, MD in 1942 before being stationed in England.

He landed at Omaha Beach June 6, 1944 with the 269th Ordinance Battalion. He went on to serve in Paris and then Belgium where he stayed until the war ended.

In addition, several exhibits focus on the time period when the Nineteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution was passed. The amendment, passed in 1920, prohibits the states and the federal government from denying citizens the right to vote on the basis of sex. Suffragettes tell their story!

There’s a display showing the changes in The Mont Vernon General Store with the passage of time.

Stand at the post office window by the bank of mail boxes when it was located behind the general store from 1975-95. In addition, see David Dutton and John Nutter clocks dating from the mid-1800s, and a 1858 map of Hilllsboro County showing Mont Vernon when it was known as Mount Vernon. Also on display Lamson Farm and Grand Hotel memorabilia, a coverlet from 1810, and a crazy quilt made of leftover and used fabric (circa 1868-80).

An up coming exhibit this season is going to focus on baskets. If you have one with a history and/or story that could be included in the exhibit, please contact Museum Curator Mary Jo Marcely.

A small library is in the museum along with a selection of historical society books, note cards, sweatshirts, and T-shirts for sale in the museum’s store.
