Amherst Garden Club – Morning Program – April 4
Boot Camp for Your Senses
The Amherst Garden Club is honored to welcome celebrated horticulturalist Tovah Martin on Thursday, April 4. Imagine how fulfilling your garden could be if you just Tovah Martin “plugged in.” Gardening expert and author Tovah Martin brings us “Boot Camp for Your Senses,” a presentation that explores the garden on all levels by attuning your nose to its scents and training your ears to listen. Just in time for spring, this lecture will awaken your senses and spark perceptions on all levels. Subtleties that you never noticed before will be uncovered and defined. Broaden your horizons and explore with a “Smellathon” to get your nostrils in gear. After this presentation, your garden will be more savory— you will know its touch, smell its aromas, hear its voice, and see it anew. Garden advice and ideas will be shared. Tovah is a perennial, heirloom, vegetable and cottage gardener of fanatical proportions, and is an honorary member of the Garden Club of America and the recipient of their medal for outstanding literary achievement. An avid gardener indoors and out, Tovah has authored more than a dozen gardening books, including “Tasha Tudor’s Garden” (Houghton Mifflin, 1994). Her most recent title, “The Garden in Every Sense and Season,” hit the bookstores last year and is the inspiration for her presentation. Join us! The Amherst Garden Club meets at the Messiah Lutheran Church on Route 101 in Amherst. The program will begin at 10:30 am. It is preceded by a business meeting and refreshments and is open to the public free of charge. Evening Program – April 4
Edible Landscaping / How to Eat your Garden
The Amherst Garden Club is pleased to offer a presentation by local horticulturist Justin Kane for our evening program on April 4th. The deer graze your yard, why shouldn’t Justin Kane you? Not since the victory gardens of WWII have so many people been interested in growing their own food. Even a very small space can produce fresh and delicious fruits and vegetables for your family, and there is no need to tear up the front lawn (unless you want to). This 45-minute talk will focus on landscape plants, native or naturalized to New England, and introduce you to ways you can integrate beautiful edibles into your pre-existing landscape. From fruit trees to fungi, fiddleheads to fenugreek, it is possible to create edible plant communities that ofContinued on page 8 u

Seven Times Salt will perform March 24th at the Library
The Amherst Town Library is pleased to continue the winter concert series with “Rantin’ Pipe and Tremblin String: Early Music of Scotland” on Sunday, March 24, 4:00-5:00PM. The program explores the unique crossroads of 17th and 18th-century Scottish folk and classical music. Homesick Scots, English music lovers, and Italian composers all found themselves bewitched by these simple northern melodies. You’ll hear traditional tunes for fiddle and pipes including toe-tapping jigs and reels along with soulful airs and strathspeys. They will play works by talented Scots
composers like James Oswald and William McGibbon along with tuneful selections from the Straloch lute manuscript, the Dixon bagpipe manuscript, and the Scots Musical Museum. They will pay homage to Scottish drawing rooms and dance halls where the only difference between a fiddler and a violinist was the music in front of him! Seven Times Salt is a Boston-based early music ensemble performing music of the 16-17th centuries on period instruments featuring Karen Burciaga, fiddle & voice; Dan Meyers, bagContinued on page 5 u
