Amherst Garden Club Morning Program – September 5th

Amherst Garden Club Presents: Where Have All the Monarchs Gone?

AMHERST – Once a common site during the late summer in New Hampshire, the monarch butterfly has been on the decline. Donna Miller, citizen scientist for Monarch Watch, will discuss the incredible details of the monarch butterfly life Donna Miller cycle, its amazing migration, the reason for its decline, and what we can do to help. Come learn how Donna and other researchers assist Monarch Watch by tagging and tracking the butterflies during their fall migration. Find out how you can help monarchs by starting your own milkweed patch and butterfly habitat. The presentation may include a “rearing tent” with live caterpillars and chrysalises to view, but only if monarchs are plentiful this season. Donna and her husband run a diverse garden operation in Canterbury, NH known as Petals in the Pines, which consists of 25 different theme gardens. She’ll share slides of her “Monarch Way Station” and “Monarch Maternity Ward,” two gardens designed specifically to attract monarchs. Continued on page 4 u

Evening Program – September 5th

Pickling: Traditional, Easy, Probiotic Method

AMHERST – What to do with that bumper crop of cukes growing in your garden this year? Come to the September 5th evening program with Rivka Schwartz where she will demonstrate how easy pickling really can Rivka Schwartz be. Are you interested in your health and in easier cooking methods? If so, this presentation is for you! Traditional, old fashioned deli pickles can’t be beat, and they are easy to make. The probiotic method of pickling is a simpler process of preserving food than water bath canning and comes with extra benefits. This traditional method also adds flavor and health-promoting, gut protecting probiotics. Rivka will demonstrate her techniques which are also applicable for making pickled vegetables using natural fermentation. Rivka says “I make my own pickles, relish, sodas and just about anything else that can be fermented for my own family. I enjoy the time I spend creating probiotic foods and love sharing these skills with others.” Rivka’s experience after raising 3 boys is that a nutritious diet, including foods rich in probiotics, is a cornerstone of good health. She studied wellness coaching at the Mayo clinic as well as completing a

“Our intent was to make use of a neglected landmark and turn it into something that better reflects the welcoming character of Amherst residents,” said Ken Jones, project lead.

The result is a welcome sign with pots and planters of blooming annuals attached to shelves supported by uniquely-designed galvanized steel brackets. “We worked on a design that is sturdy

AMHERST – This year’s award winner is a long-time resident of Amherst. For those of us with children or who have had children attend any of the public or private schools and preschools in Amherst, you undoubtedly have benefitted from his many volunteer achievements. For 35 incredible years he has led the efforts for early vision screening in the Amherst schools. It is particularly noteworthy that an estimated 20,000+ local students have undergone early vision screenings in an effort to detect and treat vision impairments.

51st Annual Rotary Pancake Breakfast, September 8th The Milford Rotary Club will host their 51st Annual Pancake Breakfast in the gymnasium at the Souhegan Valley Boys and Girls Club, 56 Mont Vernon St, Milford, NH, serving from 8 am to 11 am on Sunday, September 8th. Since 1969, the Milford Rotary Club has held an annual Pancake Breakfast to benefit the communities of the Souhegan Valley. Many area businesses, individuals, and organizations support the Pancake Breakfast through sponsorship advertising, al-

lowing the Rotary Club to feed nearly 1000 people and raise in excess of $25,000 annually. It is now estimated that during its 50 year history, more than one million dollars has been raised and redistributed back to local charities and community groups through the fundraising of the Rotary Pancake Breakfast. The Milford Rotary Club serves the communities of Amherst, Milford, Mont Vernon, and Wilton, by donating tens of thousands of dollars an-

nually in the form of grants to various local and international charities, and local nonprofit and community groups, as well as distributing more than $30,000 annually in college and vocational scholarships to the students of Milford High School, Souhegan High School, and Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative High School. See any Milford Rotarian to obtain tickets, or show up at the door where voluntary donations will be accepted. As always, kids eat free!

This past year alone, his efforts resulted in the vision screening of over 1000 students at Wilkins Elementary School, Amherst Middle School, Preschool in the Village and Sunrise Children’s Center. Unbelievably, he has taken vision screening even further and has visited every Walmart vision center store in the State of NH in order to implement and negotiate a voucher system so that needy Amherst and other NH families can receive the vision screening and eye wear that they reContinued on page 5 u
