Coach’s Comments We will have a new look this season… new jerseys and new players in nearly every spot on the diamond. It’s exciting to start fresh and think about the possibilities. As coaches, we will have to find this team’s identity and play to our strengths.

The early spring may allow us to get another full season in. Our schedule is laid out really nicely right now with three games each week. As in other years, we’ve penciled half of our roster to work on pitching.

With a JV and Varsity each playing a lot of games, it’s necessary to have that one extra guy each night that can come in and put it over the plate if needed.

The Pirate coaching staff has been together long enough to know each other’s strengths, and we work well together. Ted, Adam, and Bryan are very knowledgeable about baseball, and each one has two or three specialties which they use to teach our players.

The Pirate ballplayers are worth every minute we can spend coaching. They are eager, receptive, and good young men. I know they respect the tradition they are now a part of, and these guys will give us everything they’ve got. I am very proud to know each of these ballplayers, and very glad that I can take the field with them each season.

A: We will have excellent senior leadership with Paul and Taran both being four year players in our program. We’ll also have good pitching depth with at least ten kids capable of throwing varsity innings.

A: Health is always important, especially for the top arms.

Limiting mental mistakes and being fundamentally sound will give us a chance to compete on a daily basis.

Q: Describe normal practice.

A: Start with a moving warm up followed by various drills at all the key elements of the game.

Q: What have/will you do to provide team bonding?

A: Team dinners, morning donuts, team shed hunting day.

Q: What standards do you hold to as a coach?

A: School comes first. Good grades and behavior in the classroom is a must. Respect your coaches, teammates, umpires and opponents at all times.

Coach’s Comments Team strengths: Returning players with varsity experience will be a real advantage. There are 22 players out that gives us a JV team plus some real talent to help on varsity.

With Olivia Tucker already signed on with Bemidji State, we can continue the strong pitching tradition we have a reputation for.

Keys: It doesn’t seem to matter what kind of talent a team has. If the chemistry of the team is not there, winning becomes difficult.

All indications so far are good. Our senior captains are making sure of that.

Practice: Our practices have a factory-like setting. Everyone works at different stations on a certain skill with very little standing around.

Bonding: We do try to have at least one over-night stay at a weekend tourney.

Standards: I encourage players to keep their parents involved.

Their role is much different and more important than their coach.

During the softball season, I expect players to be focused on softball. I believe in the three sport athlete as long as athletes stay tuned into the season at hand. The bottom line is that the most successful teams make it fun.

Off-season: My players understand that what they do in the off season that will benefit them individually will have my blessing, but I make no demands. We take 75 percent of the season to come up with who will give us the best chance in the play-offs.

Additional comments: Grantsburg has a long tradition of success in many sports. This year’s team will be no different. Along with the parents and some loyal fans, I would hope that the community would get behind this team like they have with other gifted athletes. I know it will be worth your time to check us out.

A: The key for this season will be improvement. We have the drive and the want, we need to keep working on our skills to better us throughout the season.

Q: Describe a normal practice day schedule.

A: We go through a lot of the fundamentals and basics in general and then pull it all together into a scrimmage scenario.

Q: What have/will you do to provide team bonding?

A: Team bonding is very important and we incorporate that as much as possible, especially with two districts. We do team dinners and group activities.

Q: What do you like to see your athletes do in the off season?

A: Seeing kids participate in multiple sports is very beneficial for athletes. It teaches them valuable skills that will be used the rest of their life. It also betters an athlete at the sport that they feel is “their sport.�

We had a really solid team for both boys and girls last year, but we graduated a small senior class, so we hope to be even more competitive this year. We had some great underclassmen last year who are now seniors and new leaders for the team.

A: We have a big senior class this year that is really solid. They are providing a lot of leadership for the underclassmen and bring positive attitude and good work ethic to the team.

Q: What are the keys for your team to have a successful season this spring?

A: With a bigger team than we’ve had in a long time, we are focusing on keeping the positive team dynamic we have had in the past, but we are also looking to refine the more nuanced skills that often get overlooked.

Q: What have/will you do to provide team bonding?

A: We have four captains who help keep the team mentality in a sport that is often individualized. Boys captains are Andrew Hartshorn and Spencer Louis.

Girls captains are JohnnieMae Moritz and Delia Labatt.

Q: What standards do you hold to as a coach?

A: It’s about working hard and doing your best. Winning is great, but we want to make sure that every athlete is constantly improving, so we help them monitor their improvement with each track meet.

Q: What do you like to see your athletes do in the off season?

A: We like students to compete in other sports, but we have worked to have a good winter workout program that all school athletes can make use of. It’s hard to run in the winter, but we encourage students to stay healthy, active, and fit.

Coach’s Comments Q: What and/or who will be the strengths of your team?

A: Teamwork will be the backbone of our team. We have a lot of younger kids, or, kids new to the sport. We will draw on our experienced athletes for their leadership.

Q: What are the keys for your team to have a successful season this spring?

A: Success comes from within. We will push to make our kids become self-driven, to want success from within. As coaches, we can only do so much. It’s what is inside the athlete that creates success.

Q: Describe a normal practice day schedule.

A: We meet as a group each day and do warm-ups.

We bring ourselves together and take care of any announcements that need to be shared. Then its off to do our workout.

Q: What have/will you do to provide team bonding?

A: We have for years clapped in at the end of warm-ups. We share a joke, a laugh from the day before we get to work.

We utilize a spinner and each kid is encouraged to come up with a joke to share. If we start practice with a smile, it goes a long ways to make the afternoon much nicer.

Q: What standards do you hold to as a coach?

A: I am “that guy” who upholds the rules and I expect my teams to maintain the integrity of our team in all they do. Actions on any of our parts that are less than appropriate are a reflection on the team, our school, and our community. Each meet I announce, loud enough for everybody on the bus to hear, that when we step off the bus, we are Dragons and we are judged as much the whole time we are in competition. I love winning, but when it comes down to it, it’s the integrity of these young people that is truly the blue ribbon.

Q: What do you like to see your athletes do in the off season?

A: There is nothing more important than family. I want my kids to go home, enjoy time with their families, and keep their life in balance. Running is a lifetime endeavor; it can be the basis for a quality of life that is truly rewarding.

Keep it fun and you will enjoy track and field.

Highlights from last year: Boys were third and girls sixth in the conference. Boys were tough in the distance and the girls All-Conference champs in the shot put and pole vault. Billy Cooper went to State in the open 800. The 4X800 went as well for the boys. Grant, Kaitlyn and Sadie just missed qualifying. We had a nice group of kids and a great 2015 season.

A: The athletes who made it or nearly made it to State will strengthen those around them.

Q: What are the keys for your team to have a successful season this spring?

A: We need to practice as if every day matters. Each athlete has potential; we as coaches and athletes need to make sure we reach that potential.

Q: Describe a normal practice day schedule.

A: We start out as a group with announcements and warmups. They we break into specific training groups. Athletes float from group to group. It is tough for some to practice all their events and tough to get the whole team together at the end of practice.

Q: What have/will you do to provide team bonding?

A: We are going to start to include our Middle School program. We find little moments to celebrate performances. We circle up sometimes and say what is on our minds.

Q: What standards do you hold to as a coach?

A: I don’t ask athletes to do anything I wouldn’t do. I expect them to work towards getting better every day. I want to see good attitudes, work ethic, drive and determination while having fun getting better.

Q: What do you like to see your athletes do in the off season?

A: Participating in another sport.

A: The team has bonded well on the course.

A: That we maximize effort throughout the season and push ourselves toward our individual goals. Always striving toward scoring our best!

Coach’s comments: “This is the first time I have been a golf coach, and the first time many of these kids have played competitive golf in a school setting. Our goal this season is for each player to improve during the season and grow as an individual.

I am really excited to see the teams in our conference. I hope to see continued success for Siren-Webster golf team, and hopefully we can grow a tradition of good golf.”
