The Polk County Fair is coming up soon, happening in the next few weeks. Thursday, July 24, the gates will open at 7 a.m. for the public and will remain open until Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
The fair first started in 1859 and has been going strong for 167 years. It will feature a little bit of everything for families to enjoy during those four days. With over 30 sponsors, the fair will introduce some new events for attendees to enjoy, along with a few updates. Like in prior years, Mr. Ed’s Magical Midway will be the carnival provider, offering fun rides and games with prizes. While some traditional events will stay, there will also be new features this year’s fair.
One of the biggest changes is the reduced rates for residents at the nursing homes. The fair board believed it was important to give everyone the opportunity to enjoy what the fair has to offer. All residents who attend will receive free entry. For caretakers, admission will also be reduced to only $5. One event that will not be returning this year is the demo derby, usually held on Sunday. This opens up the schedule a little since the fairgrounds will be
finalizing preparations for the new bandstand.
“The preparations for the rebuilding of the grandstand will be happening directly after the fair is over this year. I'm going to have all of my grounds guys and all of my machinery and everybody here on Sunday,” Vice President of Buildings and Grounds Chad Lutsey said. “It's going to allow us to prep that area where we're going to be rebuilding the grandstand and cut down on hopefully some of the prep costs and getting ready to put the grandstand up.”
By this time next year, the Polk County Fairgrounds will have a new grandstand to showcase. The old one stood for over a hundred years before being torn down in 2016. It was located where the pulling tracks are, with the bleachers set up. Building a new one involved many partnerships, including the county, St. Croix Falls, and the state of Wisconsin.
The county has already accepted bids from a contractor in Rice Lake. Lutsey hopes the new structure will last as long as the previous one. It will
be made from a combination of steel and aluminum, with added LED lights and a sound system. Other elements like paving and additional amenities will be added later, after the main work is finished.
The Polk County Fair has grown into a major event over the years, attracting visitors to Polk County. On average, around 40,000 people come to celebrate summer and enjoy a variety of activities. It continues to be one of the top fairs in the state and was recognized by Wisconsin Agricultural Tourism. Polk County ranks
among the top five fairs to visit in Wisconsin.
Although some changes have been made, there is still plenty of fun to enjoy at this year’s fair. For kids, there are many educational opportunities along with fun activities like the Lego challenge, a hypnotist, and Ukulele fun. In the evenings, tractor, horse, and truck pulls will offer additional entertainment. For adults, there is also a social garden to explore, featuring lots of booths with unique gifts.
However you and the family enjoy the Polk County Fair, the organizers hope that memories are made and that fun is had.
“There is a core group of people that kind of put this on. And we all do it because we love it. We all do it because we want the kids to have an opportunity to get together and learn, and interact with one another,” Lutsey said. “I want people to feel like it's a good value. I want them to feel like they're safe, I want them to have fun, and I want them planning when they walk out to come back next year.”
Presale tickets can be purchased on their website at https://polkcountyfair.com or at the entrance gate when you arrive.
