Tucked away in Polk County’s town of Georgetown, you’ll find two lakes full of personality-the Blake Lakes! One larger than the other, connected by an inlet, Big Blake Lake and Little Blake Lake offer beauty, relaxation, fun times and a perfect spot for a “Vay” or “Stay” -cation. Both lakes are perfect for fishing, a swim, a boat ride or a lazy day on shore. According to Colton Sorensen, a Water Quality Specialist from Polk County’s Land and Water Resources Department, their crew recently got funding through the DNR’s directed lakes program to test water quality on a few different lakes in the county and Little Blake is one of them. “We will be sampling the lake in July, August, and September in 2022 and 2023. ‘MISS MITCHELL’ FLIES THE SKIES OF THE BLAKE LAKES By April Ziemer editor@theameryfreepress.com
With clouds above and waters below, Miss Mitchell, a restored North American B-25J bomber plane, wowed the crowd lining the shores of the Blake Lakes July 10, 2022. Flown by the Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing, Miss Mitchell was originally set for flight over the Blake Lakes, Amery, St. Croix Falls/Taylors Falls and Prescott/Hastings July 4, but was forced to reschedule due to poor weather. Once she took flight though, watchers were amazed.
Those who saw the fly over above the Blakes said they were great to see and hear. Some called it, “A thrill” and others said it was simply, “Amazing.” There were three passes over Big Blake Lake. From the docks residents could been seen waving and saluting. The Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing was formed in 1971. The Minnesota Wing was the very first charter unit of the national headquarters wing of the Commemorative Air Force and operated as a maintenance support arm to help the CAF’s mission and its ever-growing fleet
of rare aircraft. The Commemorative Air Force was founded to acquire, restore and preserve in flying condition a complete collection of combat aircraft which were flown by all military services of the United States, and selected aircraft of other nations, for the education and enjoyment of present and future generations of Americans. Today, the Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing is home to six aircraft, a large motor pool fleet, and a unique collection of World War II artifacts that are on display at Fleming Field in South Saint Paul, MN.
According to the Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing, "Miss Mitchell" is the pristine example of what a dedicated group of volunteers can accomplish. Donated to the Minnesota Wing in the 1980's, volunteers immediately began a complete ground-up restoration of this versatile medium bomber. The B-25 placed itself in World War II history books on April 18, 1942 when 16 of the medium range bombers launched from the deck of an aircraft carrier in the Pacific Ocean and bombed CONTINUED ON 6A

ROPES ◼ ◼ ◼ ◼ MISS MITCHELL | FROM 5A mainland Japan. Led by Lt. Col. James "Jimmy" Doolittle, America had begun to turn the tables on the Japanese. The B-25J "Miss Mitchell" served in the 310th Bomb Group, 57th Bomb Wing of the 12th Air Force in North Africa and Italy completing over 130 missions. Its legacy of no crew fatalities during all of its missions was a rare accomplishment. Prior to taking command of the 8th Air Force in Europe in 1944, the 12th Air Force was under the command of then Brigadier General Jimmy Doolittle. After a 12-year restoration by the Minnesota Wing of the Commemorative Air Force, Miss Mitchell took her first flight on April 18, 1992, which was exactly 50 years to the day of the daring Doolittle raid. Today, Miss Mitchell appears at air shows and special events throughout the United States and Canada. The Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing even operates a History Flight program which
gives you the opportunity to fly as a crew member on Miss Mitchell! The Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing attends many airshows, parades, and other events throughout the year. They also host two hangar dances and several museum events at their facility, but they are much more than just a museum. Additionally, we will be completing a shoreline inventory to assess development,” said Sorensen. Big Blake Lake is 208 acres and has a max depth of 14 feet. Although the DNR website shows that Panfish, Largemouth bass, Muskie, Northern, and Walleye are in the lake; Muskie and Walleye are not very common to be caught by anglers. The invasive species in the lake includes Banded Mystery Snail, Chinese Mystery Snail, and Curly Leaf Pondweed. According to the trophic state index the lake is on the edge of a lake becoming eutrophic and a lake in which blue green algae is
becoming dominant with scums, while also having abundant plant populations. The Surface Water Resources of Polk County book published in 1961 describes the shoreline as “privately developed with three resorts and forty-eight cottages” With this much development on the lake historically, it Is a contributing factor as to why the lake is becoming eutrophic. Sorensen said, “Another reason for its impairment status is Big Round Lake flows into the Blake Lakes which Big Round has a similar impairment status with excessive algae blooms as well.” Big Blake Lake is accessible by boat on its north and east sides, the latter of which is considered ideal for ice fishing. After a long day out on the water, one can enjoy an evening at Sherrards

A little “birdie” said Osceola’s Krooked Creek has been the golf course to flock to for over 30 years. After one visit, a beautiful friend “chip” sees golfers returning for another round. Both Wisconsin and Minnesota golfers alike appreciate the course, which is located just two miles east of Osceola on County Road M, just a skip away from both Horse and Dwight Round Lakes and quick 45 minutes from the Twin Cities. Krooked Kreek first opened for play in 1990 with only the front nine holes available. The back nine holes were added in 1995 to complete the challenging 18-hole facility. While it is known by several different names, Dwight/Round Lake is an oasis to those lucky enough to know the hidden gem sits east of Osceola. Dwight/Round Lake is a 68-acre lake with a max depth of 26 feet. On the east side of the lake, there is a public swimming beach as well as a boat launch owned by the town of Osceola. That, with the combination of the Stower Seven Lakes State Trail bordering the south side of the lake, makes for a mecca of recreation. There has been continuous secchi data on the lake since 1996, the secchi has been steadily increasing for the last 15 years (which is a good thing). Secchi depth (pronounced seckky) is a measure of water transparency, where transparency increases with increasing

water beyond which a high-contrast pattern on a submerged disk is no longer visible. With the trophic state index indicating Dwight/Round is moderately clear but increasing chance of dissolved oxygen in the deep water during the summer. There has not been a lot of phosphorous and chloraphyll a sampling conducted but the phosphorous samples appear to be on the edge of moving towards a eutrophic system. Which makes sense, the natural aging process of lakes is to gradually fill in with sediment and obtain more nutrients having more plants and experiencing more severe algae blooms. The lake does have a few invasive species, Yellow Iris, Curly Leaf Pondweed, and Common Carp. Dwight/Round Lake is connected to Horse Lake, Cedar Lake, and CONTINUED ON 3B

Crappies are known among the most delicious species of area lakes. With excellent flavor, they have high amounts of healthy fats and provide lots of protein. The meat is light in color-almost white. Many anglers claim that white crappie have a sweeter taste than black crappie. At the same time, black crappie offer a meatier texture due to their body shape and size. In reality, both crappie species have a very similar taste.
Not Your Average Fried Crappie Ingredients: • 1 lb crappie fillets • 1 cup beer • 3 cups flour • 1-1/2 tsp baking powder • 1-1/2 tsp oregano • 1-1/2 TBS garlic powder • 1-1/2 TBS onion powder • 1/2 tsp basil • 1-1/2 tsp cayenne pepper, or to taste • 1-1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper • 1-1/2 tsp kosher salt • Orange Crush soda Directions: With the exception of the beer, place the above ingredients in a bowl and mix. Whisk in enough orange crush to make a batter. In a large heavy skillet or deepfat fryer, heat 2-3 inches of canola oil to 375 degrees. Dip the fillets in the beer and

then coat completely with the batter. Fry until golden brown and drain well on a paper bag. Serve with lemon wedges, tartar sauce and hot sauce.
Grilling THE BEST Burgers There are all sorts of methods for mixing, shaping, and grilling backyard burgers. Using the following advice, you are bound to perfect a mouth-watering meal prepared between two buns. You want to make sure to start with a clean grill with oiled grill grates.
Ground beef with an 80/20 mix is the best for grilled burgers—this means a mix 80 percent lean beef and 20 percent fat. The 80/20 ground beef you would buy in the supermarket is usually ground chuck, which is great for burgers. Something leaner like 90/10 is usually ground sirloin, which tends to dry out when cooked over the high heat of the grill. It is important to keep the meat cold. The heat from your hands combined with room-temp ground beef can melt and smear the fat. This prevents the fat from binding
with the lean meat, causing too much of it to render during the cooking process, resulting in a dry, dense burger. Leave the ground beef in the refrigerator until you're ready to season it and form the patties. Then mix the ground beef just until it comes together and not a second more. Form it into patties and put them back in the fridge until you are ready to grill. Do not over-mix your burger. If you’ve eaten a burger that crumbles apart as you eat it, that was mostly likely a result of someone overworking the beef. The results are similar to what happens with a broken emulsion. You are trying to get the fat and the protein to bind together, but if you overmix it, you will “break” the binding, causing your burger to dry out, crumble, and lose flavor. Sprinkle your seasonings over the ground beef and use your hands to fold them in gently. After mixing your ground beef with any spices or other add-in ingredients, take a piece the about the size of a quarter and flatten it to the palm of your hand. Turn your palm down. If the meat sticks, you’re good to go. To correctly size your patties to fit on your buns, make your burgers about 1-inch thick at the edges, and one inch larger than the bun. This takes into account the inevitable shrinkage that happens during cooking. CONTINUED ON 5B

Making a wide, shallow depression in the patty, however, worked like a charm. Think of a salad plate rather than a donut. How Long to Grill Burgers: For rare burgers, cook for 4 minutes total (125°F) For medium-rare burgers, cook for 5 minutes total (135°F) For medium burgers, cook for 6 to 7 minutes total (145°F) For well-done burgers, cook for 8 to 9 minutes total (160 °F) Once you put those patties on the grill, don’t press them down. Pressing forces the fat and flavor out the burgers, which results in dry, bland patties. However, feel free to frequently flip your burgers. Add cheese about 1 minute before the burger is finished cooking. Let the burgers rest for a minute after they come off the grill. This allows time for the juices to redistribute throughout the
burger, giving you a more flavorful experience.
Steakhouse Burgers Ingredients: 2 pieces white sandwich bread, crusts removed and cut into ¼-inch pieces 1/3 cup milk 2½ teaspoons kosher salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 3 garlic cloves, minced 1½ tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoons ketchup 3 pounds 80/20 ground beef 3 scallions, very finely sliced (optional) 8 hamburger buns Instructions: Preheat the grill to high heat. In a large bowl, mash the bread and milk together with a fork until it forms a chunky paste. Add the salt, pepper, garlic, Worcestershire sauce and ketchup and mix well. Add the ground beef and scallions and break the meat up with your hands. Mix everything

together until evenly combined. Divide the mixture into 8 equal portions and form compact balls. Flatten the balls into ¾-inch patties

Crappies can be elusive. One day you’ll find them in the bays and the next day they’re gone. You want to make sure to catch ‘em while the catchin’ is good. The name crappie comes from the Canadian- French “crapet,” which refers to many different members of the sunfish familWisconsin waters home two types of crappie: the black crappie and the white crappie. Black crappies have irregular dark speckles on their sides. Look for an olive-colored back and a greenish-yellow belly. While on White crappies the dark markings consist of regularly arranged vertical bars. They are paler than the black crappie. Look for an olive-colored back and blue, green, and black spots on their silvery sides. When in doubt count the number of spines on the dorsal fin that stretches across the top of the fish. Black crappies have seven or eight spines while white crappies have five or six. It is common for crappies to produce very large year classes some years and very small year classes in other years. Unlike sunfish, which tend to produce strong year classes every year, the crappie is sort of a “boom or bust” species. Fishing tends to be the best in the fifth year following a strong year class. Spawning season is May through July in nest colonies from 1.5-6 feet deep. Males build a disc-shaped nest near emergent vegetation and defend the nest, biting at intruders. They spawn
by touching bellies and releasing several thousand eggs (female) and milt (male) simultaneously. Eggs hatch in a few days. Crappies like to be near cover. In spring they hang out near brush piles, sunken trees, cattail stands and other places near shore where predators don’t have an easy path of attack. Crappies also can be found in between the branches of sunken trees and brush piles. Fish hiding in sunken timber are not easy to reach due to all the tree limbs and twigs yet if you can sneak a bait into these areas, they are good places to fish. Later in the year crappies tend to stay in deeper water except during dawn and dusk when they move toward shore to feed. They can be found along underwater points, humps, deep weedlines and other structure. Crappies travel and feed in loose schools, eating small aquatic organisms called "zooplankton" and aquatic insects and their larvae by filtering the food through their gill rakers (comblike structures in the gills). Older fish eat mostly minnows, immature bass, sunfish and perch. They also migrate because of temperature, oxygen levels, seasons and food availability. Catching crappie may seem simple at first since many techniques can work, but it can get a little challenging, specifically when it comes to catching enough crappie for a full-on fish fry. Crappies can be tricky to catch because of the very thin membrane around their mouth,
which makes it hard to set the hook. This is why they are nicknamed "papermouth." Use your favorite technique, look for structure, then be ready for an unexpected tug. Catching crappie is a lot of fun for fishermen of all ages and skill levels. ■

Water recreation is a family affair for the Armstrongs. Their business Breezy Bay Motor Sports has everything you need for a successful day off of the shores and they have a deep-rooted history with the local waters. Denny and Pam Armstrong built Breezy Bay Motor Sports in its current location 1950 100th St. (also known as County Road I) in 2004. Denny started working in the marine repair business at Luck Marine in 1989. Pam said, “Denny grew up on the Apple River and had a love for water sports at a young age. Skiing, tubing, water bike, fishing or just a nice slow pontoon ride. We have lived on Half Moon Lake since 1974. You just can’t beat the view of the water.” Contributed

Their daughter, Rochelle also helps with the family business. Breezy Bay Motor Sports is an authorized Mercury dealer. They sell and install new motors. They offer full service/repairs for all makes/models of outboard motors. Full-service spring prep and launch in the spring and haul out and winterization/oil changes in the fall. They also have indoor and shrink wrap outdoor storage. “We have indoor storage space up to 25,000 feet as well as outdoor shrink wrap storage. Winterizing packages consist of fogging the engine, fuel stabilizer, drain water, lower unit and motor oil changes,” said Pam. Some of Breezy Bay Motor Sports best-selling items include boat cleaning supplies, batteries, lake toys and boat marine accessories. They have a fully stocked store with items needed to keep boats running all summer long. They also carry lake mats, tubes, ropes, paddle boards and life jackets anchors, and much more. The family team at Breezy Bay Motor Sports is proud of providing quality customer service. They enjoy seeing so many happy faces when customers are back on the water again.
