Welcome to the fourth edition of the 2022 Laker I cannot believe it is already July! This month begins the period known as the “Dog Days of Summer.” We often hear about the “Dog Days” but few know what the expression means.

Some say that it signifies hot sultry days “not fit for a dog,” others suggest it’s the weather in which dogs go mad. The Dog Days of Summer describes the most oppressive period of summer, between July 3rd and August 11th each year. Where’s the best place to be during this time? The lake of course.

No need to buckle up for the Butternuts, both quiet lakes offer a smooth summer ride for swimmers, fisherman and boaters of all sorts.

Big Butternut Lake is a 384-acre lake located in Luck. It has a maximum depth of 19 feet.

It offers a swimming beach and visitors have access to the lake from a public boat landing on the south western side of the lake. Fish include Panfish, Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike and Walleye.

Big Butternut is surrounded by about 100 homes, most of which are full-time residences, and is bordered by the Big Butternut Lake Campground and public beach, as well as Big Butternut Lake Park, which contains the Luck Municipal Golf Course.

The Luck Municipal Golf Course boasts that it is, “Nestled on the south shore of Big Butternut Lake, Luck Golf Course features a variety of tees and terrain to challenge and satisfy players of all abilities. Our beautiful lakeside facility offers eighteen holes of unforgettable golf: ten holes weave through a pristine pine and hardwood forest featuring several elevation changes, while the remaining eight holes play through a rolling countryside dotted with majestic oak and maple trees.

Big Butternut Lake is visible from numerous areas on the golf course and the fall colors are absolutely beautiful.”

Sitting less than three miles away, Big Butternut’s sibling, Little Butternut Lake, is a 185-acre lake located just outside of Luck. It has a maximum depth of 23 feet. Visitors have CONTINUED ON 4A

What is hotter than July’s mid-day sun? The lake home real estate market. According to data on the NorthStar MLS, approximately 174 lakeshore properties were sold in Polk County in 2021.

of Wisconsin. “As an agent one thing I always check if it’s a lake property is if it is in a Flood Zone. If so, and you are financing the sale, the lender might require additional annual Flood Insurance,” she said.

assist those seeking a lake home with information on the water quality of local lakes. She said asking locals is a great resource as well. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has lake quality information online. “Many of the lakes in Polk County also have associations and websites with further details on their lake. It’s a great resource for people coming to the area having no idea what to expect.

I also always encourage taking time to visit or stay a weekend at the lake in which a buyer might be interested, to get an overall feel of the area,” Paquette said.

She added buyers should consider a variety of things when deciding if a lake is a good fit.

Paquette said, “The lifestyle and surrounding area is HUGE for me.

When selling, I try to tap into that same feeling.

I ask what the sellers LOVE about their property and how can I convey that in the marketing. As will all sales, l always challenge my buyers to think about longevity and what the goals are for this property. Is it a wise investment? How long are they planning on keeping it? If they had to sell, what could be the downfalls for resale?”

If you are considering buying, find a good agent and prepare for the lake life. A good investment, a lake home will offer plenty of fun activities and offer a place that people will enjoy visiting. Indianhead has been a staple in Polk County for over eight decades. After 28 years of ownership by Denise Cohen, April 2022 saw the torch being passed to Jeff Potts and Bruce Wirth who intend on keeping the supper club flame alive.

Indianhead sits along the shore of Mill Pond Lake in Balsam Lake. Constructed in 1938, the Indianhead Lodge, as the building was originally known, sprang up quickly, being completely constructed over a span of 36 days.

The lodge was built on land that was the childhood home of Archie Mosay (1908-1996), Grand Chief of the St. Croix Ojibwe. Mosay who slept in a wigwam on the property until he was 10-years-old, was

just a hair older when his family was pushed south by property owner W.H. Parks in the name of

Supper Club came of age alongside the village of Balsam Lake itself, which was expanding rapidly during that time into a thriving small town and tourist destination.

Potts said, “I had been going to Indianhead for the past six years and I have gotten to know the staff and just love the place. We had heard that there was a person looking to buy the restaurant and turn it into a Pizza place. I couldn’t let that happened. Indianhead has been open since 1939. That’s 83 years and we just wanted to keep it going.”

The restaurant business is new for Potts who has a background in public safety. He spent 30 years at the Bloomington, Minnesota Police Department and the last 12 CONTINUED ON 10A

When asked why he feels supper clubs have made such a recent comeback in Wisconsin, he said, “I think people like

They are looking for something different and supper clubs offer that. We have a piano player on Friday and Saturday night, where else can you get that?”

Clear water and beautiful surroundings make Deer Lake a favorite. Spanning over 768 acres Deer Lake is popular for visitors.

Since the first frame cabin was built on the shores in 1903, the waters have been adored by residents, including some wellknown people over the years.

Deer lake is located just off Highway 8, between Balsam Lake and St. Croix Falls, sitting five miles east of the beautiful and historic St. Croix River Valley.

Between the lake and the river are many large gorges in the rocks, left by glaciers over 12,000 years ago. These gorges, many over 100 feet deep, are called dalles. The lake is spring fed both

internally and externally with a maximum depth of 46 feet. A small dam at the east end of the lake helps assure a near constant water level.

maintain the pristine water quality that is now found in Deer Lake. According to the Deer Lake Improvement Association, Maintaining the high-water quality in Deer Lake is a top priority. The Association works closely with the Deer Lake Conservancy, Polk County and the Wisconsin DNR. The lake is consistently monitored to detect water run-off problems, undesirable aquatic weeds, or undesirable aquatic species such as zebra mussels, and appropriate action is taken.

Deer Lake has a very involved group of residents who are passionate about their surroundings. They have a group who participates in an Annual Clean Up Day each spring and a volunteer Board of Directors.

Beloved lake events include a Deer Lake Association funded firework show each Fourth of July weekend and a Fourth of July Boat Parade as well as Pontoon Parties and Music on The Lake.

Deer Lake is well known as one of the premiere fishing lakes in northern Wisconsin. It contains walleye, northern pike, bass, panfish, and some good-sized muskies.

On any given day you will see fisherman, swimmers and boats ranging from paddle boats to canoes; sailboats to bass boats, cruisers to pontoons.

Deer lake has one public landing on the far northwest side of the lake, just a short way off Highway 35.

A short distance from Deer Lake is Interstate Park, the oldest state park in Wisconsin.

Other attractions within reach are the Dancing Dragonfly Winery and Fawn Doe Rosa. ■

TWO POLK COUNTY LAKES OFFER HIGH TECH TOOL TO FIGHT AQUATIC INVASIVE SPECIES

New self-service boat cleaning stations on Bone and Half Moon Lakes are aiding in the prevention of spreading aquatic invasive species (AIS).

According to CD3, their systems better enable boaters and anglers to clean, drain and dry boats and trailers while protecting lake-based economies.

Zebra Mussels, Curly Leaf Pondweed, Starry Stonewort and other AIS continue to threaten Wisconsin waters, including the lakes of Polk County.

With the 2022 summer boating and fishing season in full swing, the number of AIS is increasing. The two Polk County Lakes that are using CD3 Systems to battle against AIS are offering boaters the opportunity to reduce AIS violations and better lake life for everyone.

CD3 Systems are a high-tech tool and “selfservice” boat cleaning station that is solarpowered and waterless.

The stations will be at work in the region this summer, including lakes in Washburn, Bayfield, Vilas, Oneida, Sawyer, and Burnett counties.

Four more have been proposed that will aid in the AIS battle as the increase in lake users is expected again with lingering Covid-19 variants and the perennial pursuit of summer pleasures on the water.

CD3 stands for “Clean, Drain, Dry and Dispose,” because the system provides a cleaning infrastructure for boaters to clean, drain, and dry their own boats and trailers. The standalone unit offers a suite of self-service resources, including an air blower, wet-dry vacuum, hand tools, and lights to help boaters

remove, then dispose of, water, weeds, and debris — including leftover bait.

The stations serve as educational kiosks and even allow boaters to check-in and out of bodies of water. They also collect essential data for communities and indicate when invasive species are detected, to aid in AIS management and mitigation.

The first CD3 units were deployed in Wisconsin in 2019, there have been over 11,000 tool uses This innovative and effective system has been shown to reduce AIS violation rates by over 70 percent across the United States.

The AIS threat in Wisconsin is increasing. In 2020 alone, The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) discovered over 150 new populations of aquatic invasive species. “Most boaters are aware of the steps they need to take and the reasons why they should clean their boats after each use.

Yet some studies confirm that changing behaviors is much more challenging,” says Mark Apfelbacher, Chief Operating Officer of CD3 Systems. He added, “Like most water-rich environments in Wisconsin and elsewhere, AIS are a major ecological issue and an economic one, too. Invasives

can destroy recreational lake usage and significantly reduce lakeshore property values and the viability of small communities dependent on visitors and residents who want clean and safe waters.”

Apfelbacher noted that a study for the Canadian Council on Invasive Species found that the most common answer boaters gave in a survey for not fully cleaning, draining and drying their boats was a lack of equipment: “Imagine asking your high schoolaged child to clean their room, but did not give them access

to a vacuum cleaner, broom or cleaning spray and paper towels. A challenging task has now become impossible,” he adds.

Supported by a strong community of members, the Deer Lake Conservancy (DLC) works hard for the, “Preservation of Deer Lake and the surrounding land that contributes to the natural, recreational and productive value of the lake.”

Founded in 1995, The DLC preserves Deer Lake primarily through reducing runoff which carries nutrients and sediment from its surrounding watersheds.

This critical effort involves acquiring land and installing conservation projects on DLCowned and private properties.

The group tries to identify a key parcel in each of the largest watersheds draining into the lake that will allow them to control phosphorus and other pollutants, which would otherwise flow unchecked into Deer Lake.

These projects have included basin construction, prairie planting, wetland restorations, pond updates, a trail system installation and much more.

Open to the public and enjoyed by many, thanks to the DLC, Deer Lake features many trails with parking in several locations.

These trails are divided into north and south.

ROPES | DEER LAKE CONSERVANCY ◼ ◼ ◼ ◼ CONSERVANCY | FROM 9B largest of the Deer Lake subwatersheds. It is also the intermittent stream with the most frequent and highest flow to the lake. About 50 species of native flowers and grasses were planted as part of the prairie restoration.

A trail enters the woods at the south end of the prairie. This area has cool springs ponds that supply fresh water to the lake. The large trap rock boulders carried by the glaciers and deposited along the trail are a reminder of the power of water and ice.

Flagstad Farm is a 346 acre subwatershed.

It is adjacent to Deer Lake and U.S. Highway 8 on the south side of the lake. The DLC acquired the Flagstad Farm property in 2002 and completed projects in both prairie and wetland restoration as well as well as well abandonment. These projects reduced subwatershed phosphorus loading to about 60 percent of 1996 levels.

Purchase. Of the 70-acre Flagstad Farm Preserve initiated DLC involvement with a DOT plan that could result in Highway 8 moving from within approximately 15 feet of the lake to a full half mile south of the lake in this area. Seeds for the hundred-plus prairie species planted here were collected and grown within 50 miles of the prairie restoration site, creating one of the largest local-ecotype prairies in the state.

The DLC has secured free waterfront on-site consultations available to Deer Lake property owners. These on-site visits to evaluate runoff and erosion from a property and identify potential solutions take about 45 minutes. A visit is the first step to accessing available grant funding.

The dlcwi.org website has many resources including information on controlling runoff, lists of native plants, restoration stories and information on Buckthorn eradication.

SUMMER WEATHER BRINGS TICKS, DISEASE RISK Summer is highest risk period for Lyme and other diseases carried by Wisconsin ticks. If your weekend plans include walks through wooded or brushy areas, make sure you pack the insect repellent – and use it – to ward off tick bites.

Health officials warn that blacklegged ticks (also known as deer ticks) like to hang out in many of the same places as Wisconsinites this time of year.

Using insect repellent and taking other precautions can help reduce your risk of getting one or more of several serious diseases carried by ticks.

The blacklegged tick can spread Lyme disease, as well as anaplasmosis, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, and Powassan disease.

According to the CDC, in 2019 (the most recent data) there were 1219 confirmed cases of Lyme Disease and 959 probable cases in Wisconsin. The state ranks in the top 10 highest for Lyme disease in the nation, along

with Vermont, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Delaware.

American dog ticks (“wood ticks”), which are very common in spring and early summer throughout wooded or grassy areas of Wisconsin, can also carry diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF). While RMSF is most common in the southern United States, a small number of RMSF cases have occurred in Wisconsinites who did not travel outside the state.

“Any of these diseases can make people very ill and can have serious complications, so it’s important to take steps to prevent them,” said David Neitzel, a tickborne disease specialist.

They can be difficult to see or feel, so it is especially important to use insect repellent to keep them from biting.

Protect Yourself From Tick Bites Know when you are in tick habitat; this is when it is most important to take precautions: • Wooded or brushy areas for the blacklegged tick.

• Grassy or wooded areas for the American dog tick.

If you spend time outdoors in tick habitat, use repellent to lower the risk of disease: DEET-based repellents (up to 30 percent DEET) can be applied to

clothing or skin.

Pre-treating fabric with permethrin-based repellents can protect against tick bites for at least two weeks without reapplication. This is an excellent option for people who frequently venture into wooded areas.

People who spend time at cabins on heavily wooded property often encounter ticks and should consider managing their landscape to reduce their risk.

Consider the following strategies: • Keep lawns and trails mowed short.

• Remove leaves and brush.

• Create a landscape barrier of wood chips or rocks between mowed lawns and woods.

Perform Daily Tick Checks Perform tick checks during and after outdoor activities in tick habitat. Frequently search your entire body for ticks that may look like a speck of dirt or freckle on your skin. If you find a tick on you, remove it immediately but properly.

Early detection of tick-borne illness is important to prevent potentially severe complications.

Seek medical care if you develop symptoms that could be indicators of a tick-borne disease after spending time in tick habitat. Signs and symptoms of the various tick-borne diseases can include, but are not limited to, rash, fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, and joint pain or swelling. These symptoms can be associated with other diseases, so it is important to mention possible tick exposures or time spent in tick habitat to your medical provider. Except for Powassan disease, which is caused by a virus, all of Wisconsin’s tickborne diseases are treatable with antibiotics. ■

An old fishing joke says, “God created bass so everyone could fish.

He created walleye to separate the men from the boys.”

The walleye is one of the most sought-after fish in Wisconsin. In fact, few fish have such a strong fan base as the cool-waterloving walleye. Its thick, white fillets, handsome shape, coloring, and elusive nature make it the ultimate prize among anglers.

Walleye are interesting fish with a scientific name of Sander vitreus (Sander refers to the German common name of the European relative) and vitreus means "glassy", referring to the large eye.

Walleye are largely olive and gold in color. The dorsal side of a walleye is olive, grading into a golden hue on the flanks. The olive/gold pattern is broken up by five darker saddles that extend to the upper sides. The color shades to white on the belly. The mouth of a walleye is

large and is armed with many sharp teeth. The first dorsal and anal fins are spinous, as is the operculum. Walleyes are distinguished from their close relative the sauger by the white coloration on the lower lobe of the caudal fin, which is absent on the sauger. Walleye prefer the cool, deep, quiet waters of rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Walleye are mostly nocturnal and during the day are often found under the cover of tree roots, logs, and aquatic plants. At night, they travel to shallower waters.

This fish’s diet depends on what’s available, which usually includes small fish (such as yellow perch), large invertebrates, and insects. Feeding occurs primarily at dusk and dawn.

Walleye spawn in the spring or early summer. They spawn over gravel or rocks in rivers or shallows, where there is enough of a current to clear away sediment and aerate the eggs.

Females can deposit more than 100,000 eggs, which hatch in about two weeks. A walleye lives about 10 years on average.

it is believed that the walleye was originally confined to the larger lakes and waterways in Wisconsin. The extensive stocking of walleye fry and fingerlings that occurred early in many Wisconsin waters partly obscured the original distribution of the species. Today the walleye is present throughout Wisconsin.

walleye have been stocked in Wisconsin’s lakes and rivers. In Polk County’s North Twin and Pike Lakes, walleyes were stocked in 2020 and will be stocking again in 2022. Last time, 1400 6"-8" walleye fingerlings were put in North Twin and 1600 6"-8" walleye fingerlings were put in Pike Lake.

The same amounts will be added this year.

In 2020 Eric Van Dyn Hoven of Kaukauna, reeled in a walleye on Lac Vieux Dessert near Phelps Wisconsin that was 31.75 inches long and, when weighed the next day on a digital scale, was 16.87 lbs. The fish was a female, mostly or completely spent after spawning, and would have been substantially heavier a few weeks earlier when laden with eggspossibly a record breaker. The Wisconsin record for walleye is an 18-pound fish caught in 1933, the oldest state fish record. It was caught in 1933 on High Lake in Vilas County, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

Like some other old fish records, doubt has been cast on the legitimacy of Wisconsin's biggest walleye because there is no photo documentation of the fish and its information was presented years after it had been caught, according to the DNR. Still, it's on the books and is recognized by state officials. ■

You feel the tug, you reel ‘em in and walleye’d be darned you have dinner!

Walleye are a palatable freshwater fish with fineflaked fillets that offer a subtle, sweet flavor with low levels of fishiness. Its texture is firm yet delicate with a buttery mouthfeel.

There are relatively few bones, and this is likely to be popular with almost everyone. Each fillet is thick and offers a goodsized portion that, when cooked right, is lovely and moist inside.

Directions: Check walleye fillets to ensure all bones and skin have been removed. Cut fillets into manageable pieces, if necessary.

Combine flour, garlic powder, pepper, and salt in a shallow bowl. Place beaten eggs in a separate shallow bowl. Place cracker crumbs onto a plate.

Heat oil in a deep fryer or large cast iron skillet to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

Dip fillets into flour mixture, then dip in beaten egg, and then coat evenly with cracker crumbs; set fillets aside on a plate.

Carefully lower 2 fillets into hot oil using tongs; cook until golden brown, about 3 minutes per side.

Transfer to a paper towellined plate; repeat with remaining fillets. Serve with lemon wedges.

Pork chops can go in so many different flavor routes, which make it easy to serve them over and over again.

4 boneless pork chops Directions: Mix together honey, soy sauce, garlic, and red pepper flakes in a large bowl. Add pork chops, cover, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or up to 2 hours.

Heat grill over mediumhigh heat and cook until seared and cooked through, 8 minutes per side. Let rest 5 minutes before serving. * If you have extra thick pork chops and feel they aren't cooking through, to keep the outside from getting too charred you can create a cool zone.

Keep one burner on medium heat and turn the second burner off. Move the pork chops to the off burner and keep the lid of the grill closed. Depending on how close your pork chops were to 145° check on them after 5 to 10 minutes. You still want to ensure you don't overcook them.

LOOK OUT FOR TURTLES Now is the time of year to keep an eye out for turtles as they emerge from wetlands, lakes and rivers to lay eggs. Turtle nesting season runs from late May through June in Wisconsin, a time when many females are run over by vehicles as they migrate in search of suitable nesting areas.

Turtle nests also experience high levels of predation by nest-raiding animals such as raccoons, skunks and coyotes.
