Balsam Lake has a

maximum depth of 37 feet and is well known for Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike and is plentiful with panfish including crappie, perch and sunfish.

It’s a highly active fishing lake, with more than 30 fishing tournaments taking place on the lake per season.

STOUT'S LIMNOLOGY CENTER HELPS BRING CLEAR WATER BACK TO REGION'S LAKES This summer, people who use, East Balsam Lake, Big Round Lake and Long Lake in Polk County and other lakes in western Wisconsin and Minnesota likely won’t realize that they are reaping the benefits of the Wisconsin Idea.

The Wisconsin Idea is a centuryold belief that the University of Wisconsin System should directly support and help improve the lives of the state’s residents.

The philosophy is alive and well at UW-Stout’s Center for Limnological Research and Rehabilitation. CLRR — pronounced “clear” — in 2022 again is analyzing and treating regional lakes to improve water quality and, thus, quality of life for those who fish, boat, swim and use lakes for other forms of recreation and enjoyment.

CLRR also has studied Eau Calire’s Half Moon Lake, Tainter Lake, Lake Menomin, Lac Courte Oreilles, Desair, Lake Tomah, North Pipe Lake, Lake of the Woods in Minnesota and the western basin of Lake Erie to help better understand algal problems and management options, said James, a senior researcher at UWStout’sDiscovery Center, which includes CLRR. Phosphorus that has accumulated on lake bottoms is taken up in the summer by blue-green algae. The algae grow into dense scums that cause odor problems, release toxins that pose a human health issue, severely impair recreational use and reduce property values.

CLRR comes to the rescue by scientifically analyzing lake sediment in UW-Stout labs and developing a treatment plan.

Success stories A shining example of success is Half Moon, not the Polk County one, but rather a 135-acre lake in the center of Eau Claire. Work on Half Moon began a decade ago and will continue for at least another three years, including treatment in mid-May. Treatment has focused on applications of alum, a chemical also used in cooking, which settles to the bottom and reduces phosphorous; and endothall, an aquatic herbicide that controls

Prior to treatment, the Half Moon beach often was closed because of blue-green algal blooms and poor water quality, largely stemming from late 19thand early 20th century logging operations that disposed of animal waste on the ice each winter. Swimming in the lake, once popular, all but ceased and other recreational use declined for several decades.

James’ research discovered that Half Moon’s phosphorous issues are internal, requiring a targeted approach to heal it. The problem on most lakes CLRR has worked on, including Menomin and Tainter in Dunn County, is the opposite, stemming from phosphorous entering via the watershed.

Today, water clarity on Half Moon has improved dramatically, nearly 5 feet during the summer.

Curly-leaf pondweed is much reduced, and native aquatic plants are rebounding. Lake phosphorus has declined by more than 60%, and nuisance algal blooms have decreased by more than 70%,

James said.

The partnership between CLRR, the City of Eau Claire, Wisconsin DNR and the Eau Claire community “continues to work toward sustaining improved lake water quality for the future,” James said.

Long-term treatments can cost millions of dollars, but the results are priceless, said Steve Plaza, parks, forestry and cemetery manager for the city.

“In 2011, no one wanted to use the Half Moon because of water quality. In 2022, we will see fishing, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, kids wading and an overall positive experience on or adjacent to the lake. Just people sitting on a bench looking at the lake is a positive experience,” Plaza said.

In Polk County, CLRR is working this summer on parts of Cedar Lake, Long Lake, East Balsam Lake and Big Round Lake.

CLRR personnel launch boats every two weeks each summer to collect water and aquatic sediment samples for chemical analysis on the lakes that the Center manages.

“For example, is lake chemistry telling us more alum is needed next year? In the case of Long Lake, summer phosphorus and algal blooms have declined by over 60% as a result of the first two alum applications, and concentrations are meeting target goals. Summer water clarity has improved by 80%. This information tells us that management is on track so far for Long Lake,” James said.

Long Lake has received two partial alum applications since

2018 with another application scheduled this summer.

CLRR also analyzes sediment for consulting firms that are working on lake restoration projects in Minnesota, especially in the Twin Cities area.

Experience and expertise James previously was a research aquatic biologist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Research and Development Center, Environmental Laboratory – Eau Galle Aquatic Ecology Laboratory, in Spring Valley, for 32 years.

He has a master’s degree in limnology from Kent State University and has taught an undergraduate course at UWStout in Aquatic Ecology and Management and a graduate course in Advanced Limnological Approaches.

Buzz Sorge, a retired lake management planner with the DNR, worked with James on CLRR projects.

“Bill has developed the technology and very technical process of analyzing sediment cores. It’s a very unique lab at Stout, and he has trained people very well. It’s incredible for us working at the DNR to have access to that kind of science Bill can do. The partnership with the DNR has been phenomenally successful,” Sorge said.

“The poster child is Half Moon.

It was hyper-eutrophic — weedchoked and full of algae every year. It’s phenomenal how we’ve been able to turn that around with community support,” Sorge said.

Sorge said the DNR doesn’t have the staff to handle the work done

by CLRR. It’s high-level science that otherwise isn’t available in the region except at consulting firms, he said.

James has published 60 peerreview research articles. “Bill is so good technically the way he

thinks and problem-solves and how he applies the tools we have in our toolbox. He’s an expert at understanding the eutrophic aspect and is respected in limnological circles nationally and internationally,” Sorge said.

CLRR is self-funded through fees for its services. DNR lake planning and protection grants awarded to cities, counties and lake districts often fund the research.

CLRR is able to hire students, often three a year, who gain valuable research experience through a paid internship.

Mai Lia Vang, a 2018 UWStout graduate in environmental science with an aquatic biology concentration and 2020 graduate with a Professional Science Master’s in conservation biology, is a research analyst who manages day-to-day CLRR lab activities.

The university has an undergraduate program in environmental science, with a concentration in aquatic biology. ◼

LURE IN THE LARGEMOUTH (BASS)

Many will say the Largemouth Bass is the most popular freshwater game fish in the United States. Learning about the Largemouth will ensure you’ll land one worthy of hanging on your wall, instead of talking about the one that got away years from now.

The largemouth bass closely resembles the smallmouth bass and other species i.e., spotted bass, redeye bass, etc. Together these fishes form a group that is referred to as the black basses.

Its scientific name is Micropterus salmoides (Micropterus means "small fin"; salmoides means "trout-like" in gameness and food).

What sets the Largemouth apart from similar Bass species is the shape and size of its mouth, which extends at least to, and often beyond the rear edge of the eyes. Also, its first and second dorsal fins are almost separated by an obvious deep dip, and there

The spawning of largemouth bass in Wisconsin occurs from late April to early July. The selection of nest sites begins when water temperatures reach 60º F, and eggs are laid when the water temperatures are at 62 65º F. The male largemouth bass usually selects a sand or gravel bottom upon which to build a nest; however, the fish will also nest on soft bottoms, where they are able to expose such hard objects as roots, twigs, and snail shells on which to deposit the eggs. One trait that makes bass so successful is that they protect their nests from predators. After eggs are deposited in the nest, the male bass can spend weeks guarding the eggs and juvenile bass to ensure they are able to venture off on their own. Territorial defense against intruders is highly practiced by the Largemouth Bass.

Largemouth Bass eat a variety of food. Juveniles eat smaller items like insects. Adults consume a variety of fish, crayfish, frogs, newts, dragonflies, and virtually anything else they can fit in their mouths.

Bass can devour a population of baitfish rather quickly. Lakes that have more vegetation and weeded cover, provide a balanced ecosystem. It will also slow down the growth rate of the bass. When looking to ambush prey, the bass will be sheltered in submerged structures including drop-offs, weed beds, points, humps, and ridges. Brush and overhanging banks are other great areas of focus. Largemouth Bass use vibration, hearing, sight, and smell in order to seize its prey.

There is something soothing about the sounds of the lake at night. Water softly kissing the shores with Loon calls and frog cries in the distance, assisted by a choir of crickets. The icing on the cake to the relaxing moment, is to look up at the sky and see nothing but the majestic moon and twinkling stars. Many who live on area lakes are hoping artificial light pollution does not interfere with these peaceful moments.

A Balsam Lake cabin dweller recently shared, “What I have always loved about going to the cabin by myself is the solitude.

The dark, star filled skies and quiet- broken by occasional owls or distant truck sounds.”

Most of us are familiar with air, water, and land pollution, but did you know that light can also be a pollutant?

Components of light pollution include: • Glare – excessive brightness that causes visual discomfort • Skyglow – brightening of the night sky over inhabited areas • Light trespass – light falling where it is not intended or needed • Clutter – bright,

confusing and excessive groupings of light sources Light pollution is a side effect of industrial civilization. Its sources include building exterior and interior lighting, advertising, commercial properties, offices, factories, streetlights, and illuminated sporting venues.

The fact is that much outdoor lighting used at night is inefficient, overly bright, poorly targeted,

improperly shielded, and, in many cases, completely unnecessary. This light, and the electricity used to create it, is being wasted by spilling it into the sky, rather than focusing it on to the actual objects and areas that people want illuminated.

While too much light can damage human eyes and even harm the hormone melatonin, it can also result in sleep disorders and other health implications such as stress, exhaustion, headaches and increased anxiety.

Artificial light has several general effects on wildlife, It attracts insects, resulting in them not being where they should be, concentrating them as a food source to be preyed upon, or just resulting in a trap which exhausts and kills them. It can confuse the migratory

patterns of animals, alter competitive interactions of animals, change predatorprey relations, and cause physiological harm.

HALF MOON LAKE… A HAPPY PLACE

The moon shape in which it is named, is the only time it is probably appropriate to use the word “half” with this body of water. It is FULL of fish and other

wildlife, FULL of recreational opportunities, FULL of fun and FULL history!

Half Moon Lake is a 550 acre lake conveniently located near Balsam Lake, Milltown and Luck.

It has a maximum depth of 60

feet, with a mean depth of 25 feet and features Walleye, Bass, Northern Pike and panfish.

The lake has one public beach and one public boat access, both located at the north west end.

Cherished activities throughout the years have included July 4th fireworks, boat parades and “Loon Ladies” sales.

This year there will be a T-shirt Dye event at 10 a.m. at the Public Beach. Each person participating needs to bring a white cotton T-Shirt and dye will be provided.

According to the Memories of Half Moon Lake Booklet by Martha McMahon, Ruth McMahons kept a history of her families' summers at Half Moon Lake, beginning in 1936.

She depicted a very simple life in the early days. They cooked and heated with a wood stove, washed clothes in the lake, bought milk from the Munson or Lundsmen farms and brought it home still warm in Mason jars.

They bought their ice from Oscar Johnson's ice house that he filled each winter with ice harvested from the lake. They also hauled their water from Oscar's well until Mr. Munson dug them a 30 foot well. Ruth remembered the Half Moon Dance Hall, which burned in the 1940s. She recorded receiving electricity in 1941 and that they had the first Pontoon boat on the lake.

bought 40 acres of land around the lake, which was valued for its timber potential.

Though the Voss family had been wealthy in Europe, Carl lost his money on a building venture in Norway, and thus they were forced to try their chances across the Atlantic, sailing stateside on borrowed money.

After a few years of staying with relatives in Barron County and trying to make a living as a tradesman in St. Paul, the homesick Carl, while exploring lakes in the Polk County area, decided Half Moon reminded him of the Norwegian landscapes he used to know and would be an ideal locale to indulge his fishing hobby. That sealed the deal for him to choose Half Moon Lake as his new home. His 40-acre purchase over a century ago cost $800— still a bargain even when considering inflation.

Now, some of Carl and Dorthea Voss’s descendants still live around Half Moon Lake and the Milltown area to tell the tale of how the community evolved. ◼

Sometimes in life, it is absolutely acceptable to make waves-in fact, it is even appreciated.

As part of the Balsam Lake Water Ski Team, 16-year-old Tia Jensen makes waves and performs on them.

The Balsam Lake Water Ski Show Team can trace its roots back to 1960. They practice and perform water ski shows on Balsam Lake and various other locations throughout Wisconsin.

Team members participate in all aspects of the show, from skiing to boat driving, announcing and helping out behind the scenes.

Jensen first joined the team two years ago. It was her involvement in another group, which paved the way for her to join the skiers. “There are two little girls in our (water ski) group, they Contributed

When asked if it was hard to learn to water ski, she said, “It varies from person to person, but I personally had a really tough time learning. I spent days and days learning how to start in the water until one day I came to practice early.

Grant, our coordinator had me try to start by sitting on the dock and I got up right away. I’ve had it ever since.

Slalom ski, however, was less tough it took around three days of practice at home, I’ve been doing it since!”

Jensen practices with the team every Saturday morning from 9a.m.-12p.m, and anytime her dad has the time to take her out on the boat for a few hours.

Sometimes the tumbles taken by water skiers look like they really hurt, but

She said trusting that nothing will happen to you can be the hardest part.

“Sometimes for me, I think that trusting the person I do tricks with can be hard.

I might get paired with someone from a different team so trusting them can be super hard especially if I’ve only worked with my team,” Jensen said.

She loves being a part of the team though and said the best part is that no one is left out and it works for almost any age. She said, “It is a very welcome place and everyone is more than willing to help you in any way.”

If there was anything positive that came out of the recent world pandemic, it was the idea of “slowing down.” In a time where society seemed to always be in a rush, fast food and instant gratification were about to take over and just like that-people decided to stop and smell the popovers. Wisconsin Supper Clubs have made a comeback Baby!

Even as restaurants continue to struggle from the pandemic, the Supper Club could be the exception as people have flocked back to the classic tradition in Wisconsin. There are approximately 260 supper clubs operating in the state. The number has stayed about the same in recent years as even as some close, new ones have opened. That has happened even during the pandemic.

COVID hit the whole restaurant industry hard. According to the National Restaurant Association, 17% of all restaurants in the country have permanently closed since the pandemic. Why are Wisconsin Supper Clubs the exception?

A dinner at a supper club is like stepping back in time and going on vacation and Polk County and the surrounding area has its fair share of them, many with gorgeous views of northwestern Wisconsin lakes.

1 Teaspoon Salt ½ Teaspoon Ground Black Pepper 1 Cup Beer or Water 1 Cup Sour Cream 2 Teaspoons Chipotles in Adobo, Chopped 4 Cup plus 1 Tablespoon peanut or vegetable oil 6 oz. Fresh Chorizo Sausage 12 Corn Tortillas 2 Limes 2 Cups Green or Red Cabbage, Shredded Fine Salt, To Taste Directions: Mix the egg yolk, flour, salt, pepper, and beer or water together until you have a pancakelike batter. Refrigerate until ready to use (up to 24 hours). Make the chipotle cream: Combine the sour cream with the chipotles– adobo sauce and all–in a food processor until smooth. Heat one tablespoon of oil in a skillet over medium heat. Slice the chorizo lengthwise, peel off the casing, and chop. Cook chorizo, using a wooden spoon to break the meat

into small pieces, until very crisp (about 5 minutes). Drain and set aside.

In a large pot or deep fryer, heat the oil to 350 degrees. While it’s heating, whisk the reserved egg white until stiff and fold it into the batter. When the oil is not quite fully heated, wrap the tortillas in aluminum foil and place in the oven, preheated to 350 degrees, until soft and warm. Dip the bass in the batter, coating the pieces well. Shake off any excess and fry in batches until crisp and golden brown. Drain on paper towels and lightly salt.

To serve, place two or three pieces of fish on a warm tortilla.

Squeeze lime juice on them, scatter on a few bits of chorizo, and top with cabbage and dollops of chipole cream, to taste. Serve immediately.

Alternatively, add ingredients to a heavy duty Ziplock bag, squeeze all the air out, then crush ingredients with a meat pounder, rolling pin, or heavy bottomed skillet.

For the Herb Butter: Add ingredients to a bowl then stir with a fork to combine.

Scoop herb butter onto a sheet of plastic wrap then shape into a thick log and refrigerate until firm (if time is of the essence you can freeze for 20-30 minutes.) Can be done ahead of time.

For the steaks: Trim steaks of any big hunks of fat to avoid flare ups on the grill then pat dry with a paper towel. Rub each side with oil then season generously with the steak seasoning and press gently into steaks so it adheres - you should use most if not all of the seasoning.

Light 2/3 or 1/2 of your grill burners (2 of 3 burners, or 1 of 2 burners, depending on how many burners you have) then heat on high for 10-15 minutes, or until the grill reaches 500 degrees. Add steaks to the lit side then sear on each side for 1-1/2 minutes (adjust accordingly if your steaks are bigger or smaller than 1lb cut 1-1/2" thick,) keeping the lid closed between flipping. Transfer steaks to unlit portion of grill then continue cooking for 7-10 minutes with the lid closed for medium doneness, or until they've reached your preferred level of doneness.

Remove steaks to a platter then let rest for at least 5 minutes. Top with sliced herb butter then serve. ◼
