UNBEATABLE BONE LAKE

Beautiful Bone Lake covers 1781 acres and offers 12.5 miles of shoreline. Rich in history and full of a variety of fish, the lake is dear to many.

According to the Bone Lake Management District, Onondogacona is the beautiful Indian name for Bone Lake, and means lake of the small pines.

Carbon dating of artifacts shows the first known settlers were Indians who lived on Indian Point around 900 A.D. These Indians were the mound builders. Bone, pottery and beads made from shells have been found in the remains of their campsites.

The ruins of what was believed to have once been a trading post and fort, and perhaps a missionary center established

by French Traders is located at the south end of Bone Lake.

Remains similar to the one found in Georgetown were located near the river at St. Croix Falls.

Historical research revealed that the name of the post found near Bone Lake was Fort Onondogacona.

During the year, but especially in the spring, the Ojibways came to the post with their ginseng, maple syrup and fur to trade for many things the white man produced.

Eating, singing and dancing occupied most of their attention for several days or even weeks, and the throb of Indian dances carried on into the evening air.

Further history shared by the Bone Lake Management District describes a large settlement of

Ojibwa lived in teepees or hogans on Indian Point until the 1700’s.

Ching-gwa-mik, elder of the Chippewa (Ojibwe) tribe, lived with his wife and nine children on Little Clam Lake. At this time there was much unrest over all of Ojibway territory. Sioux made repeated forays into the area and there were many skirmishes.

However, the Sioux decided to ask the Ojibwe to join with them in attacking their mutual enemy-the white settlers who lived near Frederic. A council had been called at Bone Lake where many

of the tribe lived. The Sioux were sending representatives. Chinggwa-ga-mik disliked the Sioux and was growing old. He could see no

reason to travel a long distance to meet with a traditional enemy. At the council, members argued loud and long. They decided to take a vote-- the results of what showed the Ojibwa split down the middle-half were for joining the Sioux, and half for refusing. I-yaw-barise (later to become a great chief), left camp to run a message to Chinggwa-ga-mik, who was the Ojibwa chief. He took the Indian Trail from Bone Lake to Clam Lake and back again in one night-no small feat. Morning found I-yawbanee back on the shores of Bone Lake with his tribal, who cast the deciding vote in favor of his white neighbors and that saved the village of Frederic from an Indian attack.

The land around Bone Lake was covered with rich and virgin growing of white pine. The Ward Logging Company cut the timber around the lake in the winter of 1844-1845. In 1853 the state sold 12,000 acres in Bone Lake Township for 85 cents an acre.

River by bateaus in the summer and by sled in the winter. In 1845 the overland route was begun. The mail arrived weekly, and was delivered to the Dueholm Post Office, which was established in 1894, with Chris Dueholm, Sr. as postmaster. The post office was located at Dueholm corner on the northeast end of the lake.

Calderwood Lodge, on the eastern shore of Bone Lake has a deep history of its own.

A supper Club for many years, it is now a rental property. The stone building and was built by Charles E. Calder and his three sons, with completion occurring in 1923. Calder had originally came to the lake in 1898 on his summer vacation. Father Phillip Gordon was the only Indian priest in the area, and

Guests came to spend the summer or a weekend.

Charlie Calder would meet them at the Luck Depot and transport them to the Lodge.

The current Calderwood Lodge boasts guests can stay where Al Capone, John Dillinger and his gang did in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. Allegedly, their gang would park their convoy of Ford Model T’s near the lake on a dirt road that now forms 240th Avenue.

Bone Lake offers a mean depth of 20 feet, with a maximum depth of 43 feet. Full of crappie, perch, bluegill, bass, muskie and northern pike. Visitors can reach the lake from public boat launches at the south and north ends of the lakes. The north end features Bone Lake Point Park offering not only the boat launch, but public toilets, a fishing pier and picnic pavilions. ■

Summer in its finest form offers a little musical jingle that grows louder as it draws near and the sight of excited children squealing, “Ice Cream, ice cream!” A quick glance out the window shows an empty street, which is because the music and load of cooling yumminess is coming from the lakeit’s Tyler’s Treats ice cream pontoon.

While many tales that talk

about the effects of COVID are unhappy stories, Tyler Derheim can reflect and say he came out of 2020 with a story of sweet success.

“My family has had a cabin on Bone Lake ever since I was little. My parents and I would joke about how fun it would be to start an ice cream truck on the lake,” said Derheim.

When COVID hit, the Derheim family thought about the idea more and started to look online at used pontoons, and ultimately started Tyler’s

2022 is the third summer lake enthusiasts will see Durheim pontooning his treats around Bone Lake. Currently Bone is the only lake in his service area, but he said, “I have thought about hiring a few kids to expand on other lakes, but no set plans. I might in the future.”

He sells ice cream mainly on weekends, offering 11 treats ranging from $1-$3 and one treat especially for the dogs on the lake.

Last summer saw Derheim expanding his entrepreneurial skills. “Last summer I started selling firewood too. I put up a stand up the road from our place and also do delivery orders for bigger amounts of firewood,” he said.

Two songs, similar to traditional

ice cream truck music, help alert Lakers Derheim is near, but he also posts on Facebook a day or so prior to going out, letting people know he is coming. “Tyler’s Treats runs every weekend, unless I’m out of town or the weather is bad, so everyone pretty much knows I’ll be coming every weekend,” he said. Hours do change a bit, firewood is totally dependent on sales and orders, but for the ice cream pontoon, it is usually 6 P.M.-9 P.M Fridays, 1 P.M.-5 P.M. Saturdays and Sundays as long as there are not any weather issues.

Derheim said, “My favorite part about running Tyler’s Treats is watching all of the kids get excited and sprint down onto their docks yelling ‘Tyler’s Treats, Tyler’s Treats!’ or ‘Ice Cream, Ice Cream!’”

His family has had a cabin on Bone Lake since 2012.

Derheim feels he has had a pretty normal childhood.

“I played basketball and football, hung out with friends, things like that.

The only reason I say that is because I feel like lots of people come up with the assumption in their head that starting a business is too difficult, or they aren’t smart enough to do it. I can assure any wondering teens who have that mentality that it is not too hard for them,” said Derheim.

He plans on running Tylers Treats for this summer and the next

summer, at which point he intends to move onto some sort of college. He said, “I have a younger brother though, that I have been trying to convince to take over Tylers Treats when I leave, because it has become an amazing thing on Bone Lake. I would hate to see it be gone forever.”

Derheim shared his favorite thing about summer is doing outdoor stuff with his cousins. He said, “We go wake surfing and tubing, dirt bike riding, trap shooting and play games like Spike Ball in the yard. It really makes the summer super fun. My favorite thing about Bone Lake is selling ice cream to all of the kids, of course!” ■

PIKE LAKE HAS A PLACE FOR YOU

Whether you are canoeing, kayaking, pontooning, boating, camping or just hungry, Pike Lake has a place for you.

Pike Lake is a 148 acre lake located north of Amery, with a maximum depth of 33 feet.

Fish include an abundant amount of panfish, as well as Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike and Walleye.

Whether you’re fly fishing, baitcasting or spinning your chances of getting a bite here are good.

Pike Lake has Port Vahalla Campground and Shoreview Supper Club located right on its shores.

Port Vahalla is a peaceful resort offering picturesque lake and woodland scenes all around.

Shoreview Supper Club was first known as Bungalow Beach, a lakeside resort and restaurant that was popular during the Great Depression era. Though the original Bungalow Beach building burned down in the early 1960s, the property still remained in use as a Bible camp and a camp for underprivileged youth run by Twin Cities Lutherans, before being converted back into an eating establishment again. Tony Wolter purchased Shoreview over 32 years ago and has been offering superb food and drink to those wanting to dine overlooking Pike Lake ever since.

In addition to serving food, Wolter also rents out dock space and pontoon boats.

Access to Pike Lake is easy from the boat landing located on 100th Street or you can veer over from the south. The narrows connect Pike Lake to Amery’s North Twin Lake, which has a new boat landing located off of Highway 46.

Both lakes have very high water clarity that would rival most lakes in Polk County.

The weekend of June 17-19 is Clayton Cheese Days, offering a Kids Pedal Pull, Garden Tractor Pull and Street Dance Friday.

The coveted Muskellunge-Muskie for shortthe state fish of Wisconsin and a dream for those out looking to catch a whopper.

Muskellunge derives its name from the Ojibwe “maashkinoozhe”-meaning “ugly Pike.”

Members of the Pike family, Muskie tend to have an elongated and sleek body, shaped like a torpedo. Its fins are well behind the center-line, and its powerful tail move this predator to incredible speeds.

Brownish-green with grey and gold, Muskies have a distinct pattern of stripes and spots, and is well-camouflaged near the vegetation it hunts. Adults average about 30 inches long, with more than 50 inches and 40 pounds considered trophy size.

FISHERY | MUSKIE ◼ ◼ ◼ ◼ MUSKIE | FROM 3C Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, “On average, they are about 11 inches long after their first year of life, reach 34 inches in year seven, reach 40 inches in year nine, and reach 50 inches by age 17. Typically, females grow faster than males.”

Muskies’ forked tails are distinctly sharp and pointed. They have pores underneath their jaws, and scales on their faces.

Just after the ice melts on northern lakes and the water temperature is between 49° and 59°F, Muskies begin to spawn. In lakes where both Northern Pike and Muskies live, Muskies spawn after the Northerns. Female lay between 60,000 to 100,000 eggs.

In lakes with Northern Pike and Muskies, the Muskie seems to have fewer numbers of surviving fry. Two reasons are suggested.

Since Northerns hatch about two weeks earlier than Muskies, the young Northerns feed on the smaller Muskie fry. Another reason is that the young Muskie fry swim just below the surface of the water. They are easily seen by fish below or birds flying over the water.

unwary. They hunt by ambush, remaining motionless much as do Pike, before jetting toward their prey with great speed.

They are sight predators with vision better than most prey items, they prefer clear water

When the water temperature reaches 60°F, Muskies feed heavily. At 80° the feeding slows down. They remain in the same area of a lake, sometimes for their entire lifetime.

Muskies are an elusive fish but highly prized by anglers. Many fishermen specialize in Muskie fishing and will fish for no other species. They are called "the fish of 10,000 casts,” which gives some idea of how difficult they are to catch.

According to many guides, Muskies do not fear anything, including fisherman. They routinely follow lures back to the boat without striking. Sometimes they will flick a lure or fly back at the fisherman.

Hooking a Muskie is hard. Landing one is even harder. ■

Those who love eating muskies will tell you the fish tastes quite similar to bass. Others believe it tastes more like pike. Either way, muskie can be more of a bland fish with not as much flavor as other lake fish species. Much of the taste of the fish depends on how you cook it and the following are some recipes sure to make the flavor pop.

Grilled chicken is an ultimate favorite to eat during the summer. With a great, lightly charred flavor, it pairs perfectly with many seasonings. Whether you choose to grill up a few chicken breasts over a grate, or get wild and crazy with a batch of beer can chicken, this summertime staple is always a winner.

Tropical Muskie muskie fillets, 2 pounds 4 tablespoons lime juice 3 tablespoons butter

Muskie Spicy Orange-Pineapple Tropical Sauce 2/3 cup orange marmalade ½ cup pineapple juice 2 teaspoons horseradish ¼ teaspoon garlic powder ¼ teaspoon coriander hot sauce Directions: 1. Pre-heat the oven to 350°F. 2. Meanwhile, in a saucepan, combine all of the sauce ingredients together and cook over a medium heat for 5 minutes. Turn the heat down low to keep warm.

3. Add the butter to a small bowl and heat in the microwave just until melted. Add the lime juice and mix together. Place the muskie fillets in baking dish and brush on the lime and butter mixture. Bake the fish for 10 minutes, turn the fish over, then bake for an additional 10 minutes or until it easily flakes with a fork. Baste the fish every 3-5 minutes during cooking. When done, transfer the fish to serving plates and top with the tropical sauce.

Pan-Roasted Muskie with Bacon and Tomato Ragu 2 pieces of muskie fillets, approximately 2 pounds.

2 tablespoon of olive oil Salt and pepper to taste For the bacon and tomato ragu 1 pound of plum tomatoes cut in half. ¼ pound of cooked smoked diced, fat reserved bacon.

1 large diced leek.

2 tablespoons of capers.

2 cloves garlic, minced.

Directions: 1. Use a large pan to sweat the diced leeks in the reserved bacon fat over medium heat.

2. Add garlic and cook for one minute.

3. Add the tomatoes and cook until the tomatoes are soft (for five minutes).

4. Add the diced bacon and capers and stir until mixed.

6. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190.5°C).

7. Heat a large pan on your stove, and when ready, add the olive.

8. Season the muskie fillets with salt and pepper before you gently place them in the hot pan with the olive.

9. Move the pan to the oven, and keep it for 12 to 15 minutes.

10. Remove the fillets to a serving tray, and top with the ragu.

Grilled Chicken Cobb Salad 4 skinless, boneless chicken breasts (about 8 ounces each) 1 small onion, cut into 1/2-inchthick rings 1 cup buttermilk 2 cloves garlic, smashed Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 4 slices bacon 3 large eggs 1/4 cup vegetable oil, plus more

for the grill 4 teaspoons white wine vinegar 1 tablespoon dijon mustard 2 hearts romaine lettuce, chopped 1 tomato, chopped 1 avocado, chopped 1/3 cup crumbled blue cheese Directions: 1. Pound the chicken between 2 sheets of plastic wrap with a mallet or heavy skillet until 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Transfer to a large bowl and add the onion, 3/4 cup buttermilk, the garlic and 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper.

Refrigerate at least 30 minutes and up to 4 hours.

2. Meanwhile, cook the bacon in a medium skillet over medium heat, turning, until crisp, about 8 minutes. Remove to a paper towel-lined plate to drain; reserve the drippings for the dressing.

Chop the bacon.

3. Fill a small bowl with ice water. Bring a medium saucepan of water to a boil. Add the eggs and cook 4 minutes, then transfer

1 egg to the ice water using a slotted spoon. Continue cooking the remaining 2 eggs until hardboiled, 6 more minutes; drain and let cool.

4. Make the dressing: Remove the 4-minute egg from the ice water and carefully peel (it will be soft); transfer to a blender. Add the vegetable oil, reserved bacon drippings, remaining 1/4 cup buttermilk, the vinegar, mustard, 1/4 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of pepper and blend until smooth and slightly thick, about 1 minute.

Refrigerate while you cook the chicken, at least 15 minutes.

5. Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium high. Lightly brush with vegetable oil. Drain the chicken and onion, discarding the garlic; pat the chicken dry. Lightly season with salt and pepper.

Grill the chicken, turning once, until just cooked through, 6 to 8 minutes. Grill the onion, turning occasionally, until tender and lightly charred, about 10 minutes; roughly chop.

6. Peel and chop the hardboiled eggs. Toss the romaine, grilled onion, tomato, avocado, blue cheese and 1/4 cup of the dressing in a large bowl. Divide the chicken among plates and top with the salad; top with the bacon and chopped hard-boiled eggs. Drizzle with the remaining dressing and season with pepper.

Beer Can Chicken 1 opened, half-full can of beer at room temperature-tall skinny cans work best 1 5-pound whole chicken, neck and giblets removed 2 T. canola oil 1 T. cumin 2 tsp. garlic powder 2 tsp. onion powder 2 tsp. kosher salt, plus a bit more sprinkling over entire chicken 1 tsp. sweet paprika 1 tsp. chili powder 1 tsp. dried oregano 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper freshly cracked, courselyground black pepper Directions: 1. Preheat gas grill to mediumhigh heat, with all burners lit.

2. With paper towels, pat chicken as dry as you can.

3. In a small bowl, combine oil, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, kosher salt, paprika, chili powder, oregano, and black pepper. Rub it all over the chicken and inside the chicken cavity.

4. Place half-full beer can into can attachment of beer can chicken holder (Found at many stores and online). Lower the chicken onto the open can, so the chicken is sitting upright, with the can in its cavity. Then tilt the chicken a bit to the side, and CONTINUED ON 11C

◼ ◼ ◼ ◼ GALLEY | COOKING COOKING | FROM 10C sprinkle chicken all over with a bit more kosher salt and a generous sprinkling of just-cracked, coarsely ground black pepper. It works best to have someone tilting and rotating the chicken as you add this final sprinkle of flavor and texture.

5. Turn off one grill burner and place chicken over this area, for indirect cooking. Reduce heat to medium and maintain a temperature of 325° to 350° F. Shut the lid and walk away. Let cook, without opening the grill lid, for at least 45 minutes. Let cook for 1 hour and 15 minutes total before inserting an instantread thermometer into the thickest part of a thigh. Without touching bone, the thermometer should read 165° F. For a single 5-pound chicken, this takes 1 hour and 15 minutes - but grills and temperatures vary, so just keep an eye on the temperature. Now turn heat up to high and let cook for 10 minutes longer, to amp up the crispiness of the skin. With a heavy-duty set of oven mitts, carefully transfer chicken on the chicken holder to a rimmed pan and let rest 10 minutes.

Then carefully lift chicken off the beer can, gently wiggling the chicken back and forth if it sticks. Cut chicken into pieces with a meat knife and serve immediately. ◼
