BEAUTIFYING BALSAM LAKE

By Kelly Holm Covering nearly 2000 acres, Balsam Lake, like the nearby village that bears its name, encompasses all the best aspects of rustic cabin country while offering a vibrant community of nearly 900 families along its shores. Whether you’re into fishing, boating or swimming, the whole family can have fun here, but here’s an overview to get you started.

Balsam Lake doesn’t only border its namesake— with a shoreline more than 65 miles long, roundtrip, it also touches the Apple River, Georgetown and Milltown townships within Polk County.

To the public, it’s accessible from Balsam Lake Beach along Mill Street, as well as six different boat landings. But privately, there are a multitude of other ways to enjoy it, from the outdoor dining view at the Balsam Lake Lodge, Lounge & Supper club to the family cabins of Ward’s Balsam Beach Resort.

It’s an active fishing lake, with more than 30 fishing tournaments taking place there per season.

Fishermen might expect to reel in largemouth bass, northern pike, panfish or, if you’re very lucky, walleye. But there are some issues lake-goers and homeowners should be aware of, varying by location along the water. The Balsam Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District is always hard at work maintaining the water body’s well-being, both in its main basin and smaller basins East Balsam, Boston Bay and Little Basin.

revolve around preserving water quality and cracking down on invasive species— the most common of which is curly-leaf pondweed, an aquatic plant distinguished by its serrated leaf edges that has been a pest to midwestern waters for more than a hundred years. Though it’s native to Eurasia, curly-leaf pondweed can wreak havoc on a non-native habitat by crowding out local flora and fauna and obstructing navigation for boaters and other aquatic motorists.

Luckily, the district acquired an aquatic weed harvester in 2015 to curtail the spread of curly-leaf

pondweed within Balsam Lake, as well as employing a lake biologist and a lake treatment company to tend to the problem. The last six years have seen a shrinkage of the weed’s presence in the lake since then, from approximately 100 acres in 2015 to 60 now. The district is also aiming to crack down on the spread of other invasive species that have not yet infested Balsam Lake but are present in other Polk County waterways, such as zebra mussels and Eurasian milfoil.

“We have inspectors at each of the [boat] landings, and their job is to look for invasive species,

and get a record of where the boat had recently been, what lake it was in, [and] how long ago it was,” said Tom Kelly, chairman of the Balsam Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District. “We’re trying to prevent [zebra mussels and Eurasian milfoil] from coming to the lake, so a good portion of our budget is oriented toward those inspectors. Some of our neighbor lakes have recently seen zebra mussels, and certainly have Eurasian milfoil, but we’ve been fortunate to date, knock on wood… it’s kind of when, not if, they come.”

In order to delay and stop the spread of aquatic invasive species such as zebra mussels and curlyleaf pondweed, Wisconsin boaters are required to clean their vessel of flora and fauna before utilizing or transporting it, drain it of water, and dispose of any unwanted bait.

Additionally, the district is implementing a nine-year initiative to reduce phosphorus content within the lake, in order to decrease algae levels. Last year, East Balsam underwent a round of alum treatments, a process that will be repeated every two years for the next nine with the hopes of trapping phosphorus on the lake bottom in the long term.

“After [the last] treatment, we saw about a 60 percent improvement in terms of percentage of phosphorus in the water column, and in the clarity of the water also,” Kelly said. “We anticipate CONTINUED ON 4A

At the lake district’s July annual meeting, constituents will have the opportunity to vote on the program’s continuation, a motion that Kelly anticipates will pass. As spring heats up into summer and more and more stir-crazy midwesterners are itching to spend time out on the lake, the district is also planning to partner with the Balsam Lake Homeowners Association to assemble a water safety patrol team.

“With everything remote, and more people spending more time at the lake versus in urban America, the lake is just getting more usage. Which is great for more people to have access to it, and great for the businesses around here, but obviously that causes some incremental safety concerns,” Kelly said. “We used to have a boat patrol that was administered by the Village of Balsam Lake, [but] they informed the homeowners association that they were not capable to continue that program… we as a government body have the power to perform that duty, so we’re in the midst of trying to initiate a new water safety patrol program,” The planned patrol program, Kelly says, is in its finalization phase and will likely be passed at an upcoming lake district meeting in order to be operational in time for Memorial Day. “Our objective [will be] to primarily educate, but we’ll also enforce the ordinances as set by the state of Wisconsin, and some local ordinances that pertain to no-wake zones on the lake,” he said.

The Balsam Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District meets in the Polk Business Center Conference Room on the third Saturday of the month at 8:30 AM, with the next meeting taking place on June 19. The annual meeting will take place at 8:30 AM on July 17, in the Unity School Performing Arts Center. ■

FINDING YOUR CINDERELLA DOCK

By Kelly Holm Maybe you’ve just purchased a new lake house, and have to contend with a dock-buying decision for the first time. Or maybe your old dock is wearing out and you know it’ll soon be time to have it replaced. Whatever your circumstances are, the perfect dock is often dependent on shore conditions and the eye of the beholder— which is why it can be a hassle to determine which kind of dock fits your shoreline and preferences just right. You’ll need to consider a variety of factors, from the lake bottom conditions to the local climate.

What are common types of docks in Wisconsin?

Sectional docks are split up into different sections that can be easily assembled or disassembled, and thus are easier to store during the off-season as they will take up less space. They are suitable for lakes with firmer, thicker bottoms and rougher water, as well as shorelines along a steep or rocky hill. What about vegetation and environmental concerns?

Homeowners along the shoreline are allowed to remove submerged vegetation, including lily pads, in order to clear a path suitable for maneuvering a boat in and out. If preserving vegetation is a matter important to the homeowner, a ThruFlow-brand dock may be a solid option. These docks contain slits to let sunlight filter in, enabling vegetation to thrive.

However, they do contain vinyl, so they may feel hotter against your feet than other docks.

Aluminum and cedar docks are also excellent options in the environmental-friendliness regard, but pressure-treated wood is not ideal for the environment when building a dock.

“Avoid using barrels [when building a floating dock] unless you are able to verify that their original contents were not hazardous to a waterfront environment,” says Cottage Life magazine.

Like everything else about choosing a dock, it’s relative! On some parts of Bone Lake, for example, you could put out 300 feet of dock and be barely in three feet of water, because you can’t get your boat out any shallower. On Balsam Lake, however, if you tried to put 300 feet of dock in, you would probably be going halfway across the lake! Getting yourself to navigable waters is what it’s really about.

The dock should be longer than your boat, but what’s more important is finding the right length of dock lines, in order to secure your boat to your dock. For transient dock lines (also known as “bow and stern” lines), you want them to be two-thirds the length of your boat. Spring dock lines should be equivalent in length to your boat. Additionally, if you are putting in a boat lift, at least three feet of water

Roll-in docks need to be wheeled in and out each season, with minimal assembly work once they are secured. They are a good choice for flatter shorelines, without a steep incline or rocky conditions. You’ll have to make sure you have somewhere with enough space to store it, though, since it can’t be taken apart.

“Roll-in is usually most people’s preferred version, especially if they’ve got a lower-level lot,” says Shannon Fulton of St. Croix Dock.

Floating docks are attached to buoyant materials and must be anchored to a water body’s bottom. This type of dock may be best if you’re on a deep lake, a river, or a lake with frequently fluctuating water levels. After all, a dock’s no good underwater! Muddy bottoms and floating docks also go well together.

However, a floating dock might be less stable to walk on, so they will be less suitable if you struggle with balance.

Every lake and shoreline are different, so there very well could be a different “Cinderella dock” for every boater. With this article to get you started, there are numerous docking companies across Polk and Burnett counties to take the next step. In the matter of docking laws and ordinances, one should refer to their local regulations and to the Wisconsin DNR. ■

HOW’S ABOUT HORSE LAKE?

By Kelly Holm Located eight miles east of rustic Osceola, Horse Lake is a peaceful 221-acre lake that measures 11 feet deep and is accessible by one public boat landing.

If you don’t have a boat and want a lakeside view beyond what the landing has to offer, there is public property along the north end of the lake, including the Behning Creek Fishery and Cattail State Trail public lands.

And if fishing’s your thing, especially carp fishing, Horse Lake should be a go-to spot, because if there’s one thing this lake has an abundance of, it’s carp, one of the most common invasive fish species in Wisconsin.

“Lotus Lake flows into Horse Lake, then outflow goes to Cedar Lake, and there’s carp in all three,” said Polk County Water Quality Specialist Colton Sorensen. “What carp do is basically root up the bottom, and they’ll stir up sediment… releasing nutrients [and] causing more algae blooms.”

Carp became widespread in the United States in the late nineteenth century after being introduced as a food source, but quickly became a detriment to American waterways by muddying up lake bottoms, choking out aquatic vegetation and interfering with native species’ food supply.

Though they already exist in high numbers, uninformed people can add to their populations through actions as seemingly innocuous as disposing of a pet goldfish. In the wild, goldfish can mate with

carp, and will quickly revert to their natural grey color and expand drastically in size.

“With so much water coming in and leaving the lake, it’s really hard to tell how they got there,” Sorensen said. “Just even releasing goldfish… if enough people released one goldfish, and they mated, they could potentially make a population.”

cut down on Horse Lake’s population of this invasive species, the lake’s informal association encourages both angling and bowfishing, and urges fishermen to report via survey the number of carp caught.

“At the boat landing, they have a mailbox [where] they asked… if you go out there and you catch carp, to report how many you got,” Sorensen said.

ly forming delta in Horse Lake’s system and the influence of carp on area waterways. The delta is on the north end of Cedar Lake, which is connected to Horse Lake through Horse Creek.

“It’s a lot of organic material,” Sorensen says of the delta. “It’s kind of like you took some sediment and some cattails and some other plants and threw it in a blender and chopped it up, and that’s what’s forming there.”

The intern team canoed the entire length of the interconnected lakes, from Horse to Cedar, in order to gauge what might have caused the delta, but gathered that carp activity was disrupting the lakes’ balance within the entire system. A new aerial photo of the lake, which had last been updated half a decade ago, also shed light on how the water balance had shifted.

“There [are] large changes in the river, where meander scars are made, where it was a curve but now it’s straight,” Sorensen said.

“We have had high water for the last five years, lots of rain… Lotus Lake has got a big watershed that drains to Horse Lake, but also Horse Lake’s got more water in it… and all that’s just putting a lot more water in the system. They were trying to figure out what the cause of that delta is, and we’re thinking it’s just due to high water and lots of flow.” ■

A TASTE OF HOME AT INDIANHEAD SUPPER CLUB

By Kelly Holm For this cozy, down-home supper club along the shore of Mill Pond Lake in Balsam Lake, the story began in 1938. The Indianhead Lodge, as the building was originally known, sprang up quickly, being completely constructed over a span of 36 days.

The lodge was built on land that was the childhood home of Archie Mosay (1908-1996), Grand Chief of the St. Croix Ojibwe. Mosay was 12 years old when his family was pushed south by property owner W.H. Parks in the name of development, but grew to be a revered spiritual and cultural leader within the tribal community.

Originally owned by Walter and Dorothy Andersen, the Indianhead Supper Club came of age alongside the village of Balsam Lake itself, which was expanding rapidly during that time into a thriving small town and tourist destination.

Current owner Denise Cohen was originally one such tourist. Originally from Minneapolis, she visited the supper club shortly before she made the permanent move up to Balsam Lake. “[My family] just came in to eat, and we were going to move up here, and so it just seemed like it was a good thing for me to do,” Cohen said. “I needed something to do, I didn’t know what I was taking over!”

Though rural Polk County seems like quite a change of pace from bustling Minneapolis, Cohen has always felt connected to the surrounding community through the numerous patrons— whether seasonal customers or local regulars, couples or families— that darken the Indianhead’s door. Among these clientele are Barron County rock and blues musician Manfred Schonauer, who has entertained at the supper club, and Ron Faiola, an author and filmmaker who profiled the Indianhead in his “Wisconsin Supper Clubs” book and documentary series.

sion, [one of Faiola’s] videos, before he wrote any books,” Cohen said. “She saw the video, and Indianhead wasn’t in it, so she contacted him… before he wrote his first book, he came and he tried our food, took the pictures that are in the book, spent the evening here.”

Published in 2013, Wisconsin Supper Clubs: An Old-Fashioned Experience is the result of Faiola’s second journey around the state profiling supper clubs, and the Indianhead is one of nine such establishments in northwestern Wisconsin depicted within its pages.

A couple of years after Faiola’s initial visit to the Indianhead, he came back in order to do a book signing, and today a copy of Wisconsin Supper Clubs is featured in a prominent spot along the Indianhead’s bar.

“We have customers that have purchased the book and then they kind of make a plan, and they go around to different supper clubs that are in the book,” Cohen said. “[It has had a] very positive effect on our customer base.”

INDIANHEAD | CONTINUED FROM 2B Although the Indianhead, like all restaurants, took a hit during the worst months of the COVID-19 pandemic— especially in the winter, when the club’s large cabin-owning base is out of town— Cohen is optimistic about how the establishment will fare now that more and more people are getting vaccinated, emphasizing the ambience of 90-person capacity main dining room, featuring vibrant decorations and velvet paintings of Native Americans.

“This is a really cozy-looking dining room,” she says. “Everything is original in here, since the day it was built, except for the bar wall.”

The supper club also includes a downstairs party room, which can be booked for free for parties of 30 or more people. It is an ideal location, Cohen says, for a small wedding dinner, a groom’s dinner or a birthday party.

“The people that come in, our customers, you get to know them and it’s satisfying,” Cohen said. “It makes you feel instant gratification.” ■

WALLEYE IN WISCONSIN

By Kelly Holm As one of the most succulent fish to serve on a dish, walleye are a lucrative, coveted trophy for many a fisherman, and can be found in many lakes throughout Polk and Burnett counties, with populations ranging from “present” to “abundant” in quantity (check with the WI DNR’s website for information on specific lakes). But if you’re new to Wisconsin fishing or just want to learn more, what is there to know about this spinyfinned, marble-eyed species that regularly tops sporting surveys of Wisconsin’s most sought-after fish?

Identification Facts Walleye are Wisconsin’s largest species within the perch family, a classification known for its ray-finned appearance that also encompasses common fish like the darter, the yellow perch and the sauger, the latter of which is known to be quite similar in appearance and in fact can mate with walleye. However, walleye are larger than sauger, and are more solidly golden brown, with mottled darker spots compared to the sauger’s larger dark blotches. A walleye’s underside will be white, and its teeth will be sharp.

Its glow-in-the-dark, marbly eyes are another distinctive trait.

Due to their sharp canines and bony gills, knowing how to handle a walleye once it’s caught is highly important. In order to avoid a bite, your palm should grip the back of

the walleye’s head, with your fingers and thumb grasping its sides.

Where to find walleye Wisconsin’s Northwoods comprise a fisherman’s paradise, and 27 lakes in Polk County and 35 lakes in Burnett County are a habitat for the critters, respectively.

Though you may need to dedicate hours out on the lake to bag one (they can be crafty), if you’re vacationing at a lake cabin or waterside resort, you’ll likely find a supply of walleye close by. When to find walleye Walleye season is generally nearly year-round, usually spanning from the first Saturday in May to the first Sunday in March (this will vary somewhat depending on location). Late spring and early summer, as well as the month of October, tend to be lucrative times to catch the marble-eyed delicacy, especially during the times of dawn and dusk. But what do you need to know about the fish’s own annual patterns? Spawning season takes place in April and May, commencing with a migration to shallow areas with rocky, gravel-bottomed shorelines that are suitable for the task. A female walleye will mate with up to seven males at a time, laying approximately 50,000 eggs. The eggs

take between one and four eggs to hatch, depending on the temperature. Male walleye are smaller than females, and are quicker to reach adulthood— a male is mature by age 2 or 3, while a female takes 4 or 5 years to be fully grown.

How to catch walleye Best practices can vary depending on the fisherman’s location and personal preferences. From traditional angling on a boat with live bait to popping from a shallow, dense area, there are arguably as many methods and solid types of bait as there are anglers and lakes. Though walleye are typically reluctant and slow to be reeled in, during spawning season they tend to get unusually bite-happy.

This year, the occasion falls on Saturday, June 5 and Sunday, June 6.

That weekend only, Wisconsinites itching to explore the great outdoors will not need an admission sticker to delight in all that the state’s 49 state parks and 15 state forests— including Grantsburg’s Governor Knowles State Forest, Luck’s Straight Lake State Park, St. Croix Falls’ Interstate State Park and the Osceola Bedrock Glades State Natural Area— have to offer, from 6 AM to 11 PM. a fishing license or trout/salmon stamps in order to partake hook, line and sinker. June isn’t the only time of year when free fishing is available in Wisconsin— the third full weekend in January also sees suspended license requirements, if ice fishing is your thing. With 84,000 miles worth of rivers and streams flowing throughout the Badger State, and more than 15,000 lakes, there is plenty of water for all who want to participate to enjoy. Due to COVID-19, fishing clinics will not be taking place.

Additionally, Free Fun Weekend is also a great time to give trekking a state trail a try.

Whether you’re into hiking, horseback riding or all-terrain vehicles, there are plenty of ways to enjoy all of the Dairy State’s trails, including the Gandy Dancer which meanders throughout Polk and Burnett counties, and the Cattail, which spans from Amery to Almena. ■

BOAT SAFETY CHECKLIST Whether you have a little boat or a big boat there are items the U.S Coast Guard requires for different kinds and sizes of boats. Here is a list of items that you are required to have in your boat.

Documentation According to the U.S Coast Guard virtual vessel safety check list, documentation such as the boat’s registration needs to be displayed visibly on the boat’s forward half of the boat.

The USCG says they must be plain, vertical, block characters, not less than three inches high and in color contrasting with the background. A space or hyphen must separate the letters from the numbers.

The state tax sticker must be placed according to your state policy. A state validation decal must be displayed within six inches of the state registration number.

Safety Check Along with the documentation for your boat, you must carry a few life saving items in your boat with you in case you have some sort of emergency. Here are the items approved and required by the USCG. • Life jackets, personal flotation devices or PFDs must be Coast Guard-approved, in good condition and of suitable size for each person on the boat.

• Children on the boat must have properly fitted PFD and placement. How often one wears the PFD while on the boat must be followed according to state policy.

• Visual distress signals are required by all boats to have. The USCG says recreational boats 16 feet and over used on coastal waters or the

Great Lakes are required to carry a minimum of either three day and three night pyrotechnic devices, one day non-pyrotechnic device such as a flag, and one night non-pyrotechnic device such as a auto SOS light. Examples of night non-pyrotechnic devices are strobe lights, flashlight or lanterns. Examples of day non-pyrotechnic devices are a signal mirror, red or orange flags, and hand signals.

Fire extinguishers are also required if one of the following conditions exists according to the USCG: • If there is an inboard engine.

• If there are closed compartments that store portable fuel tanks.

• If a double-bottomed hull is not completely sealed or not completely filled with flotation ma-

terials.

• If there are closed living spaces.

• If closed storage compartments that contain flammable materials.

Rum Punch Rum punch is one of the oldest cocktails on record, dating back to the writings of a British employee of the British East India Company in 1632.

According to Difford’s Guide, the juice in the punch tamed the harshness of the rum available at the time.

British sailors preferred the drink for its ease of storing aboard their ships and brought the drink to London, where it became popular in coffee houses.

The Cool Pimm’s Cup A Pimm’s Cup cocktail is “almost as British as a cup of tea,” according to Racks Restaurant.

It’s a staple of events such as Wimbeldon and Ascot.

Made from Pimm’s No. 1 Cup, a gin-based liqueur, and sparkling lemonade or ginger ale, this cocktail is served in a highball glass with ice, fruit and mint, according to Britannica.

To appreciate the Pimm’s Cup, however, you must first appreciate the main ingredient: Pimm’s No. 1.
