Looking for a program that offers you peace of mind for maintenance on your HVAC unit?
Heating and air conditioning systems are one of the largest investments we make for our homes. Yet, we hardly think about their upkeep; only thinking about them when our comfort is negatively affected and then we realize how much we take our HVAC systems for granted.
Just as your car needs a regular tune up to run efficiently, your heating and A/C systems need regular maintenance. If you consider that it runs continuously, day in and day out, for years without much attention, the inefficiency and wear & tear could end up costing you dearly. Call today and become a part of our Comfort Assurance Program –a bi-annual program including an inspection of both your cooling and heating systems through the year for one fee.

Cattail State Trail
The Cattail State Trail travels for 18 miles on a former rail corridor between the communities of Amery and Almena in northwestern Wisconsin. Forests, farmlands, prairies, hills and various wildlife habitats surround the trail, which also passes through the Village of Turtle Lake. The trail is maintained and managed by Polk and Barron counties.
Trail activities: The trail may bring a number of different users to the trail at the same time. It is important to use good trail etiquette to ensure the enjoyment and safety of all trail users.
ATVs, UTVs & Off-Highway Motorcycles
All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are allowed on the trail yearround. Off-road motorcycles are allowed on the trail year-round in Polk County only. Operators must follow all Wisconsin ATV operation laws. Barron County has an extensive network of ATV routes and has opened a trail that connects with the Cattail, east from Almena to the village of Poskin. The connecting trail is on private land. Please stay on the trail and respect property boundaries.
About 2.5 miles east of Almena, Barron County has developed an ATV intensive use area. There is a trailhead with rest rooms available. Both ATV and snowmobile routes pass through the area and can use the trailhead.
Hiking, Bicycling, Pets & Walking
The entire trail is open to walking and bicycling, though bicycling is not recommended. The trail may be rough or soft in many sections. If you plan to bike the trail, the tread is more suitable for off-road bikes.
Pet owners, please be sure to have your pet on a leash, 8 feet or shorter, at all times. You must pick up after your pet.
Horseback Riding
The entire trail is open to horseback riding. The trail is not groomed or surfaced and may be rough or soft in many sections. Riders must share the trail with motorized vehicles.
Snowmobiling Winter activities
Snowmobiles are permitted on the trail. Operators must follow all Wisconsin snowmobile laws. The trail also connects to numerous miles of county snowmobile trails.
The opening and closing of snowmobile trails is at the discretion of each county. Snowmobile trails which cross DNR lands are opened and closed consistent with the
surrounding county (or counties). Whenever possible, the opening and closing of snowmobile trails is done on a county-wide basis, however localized conditions may require localized trail opening and closing. It is the responsibility of the county to provide notification about the status of snowmobile trails. The Travel Wisconsin Snow Conditions Report, and local club and county snowmobile web pages and telephone hotlines will provide the most current information.
About 2.5 miles east of Almena, Barron County has developed an ATV intensive use area. There is a trailhead with rest rooms available. Both ATV and snowmobile routes pass through the area and can use the trailhead.
The trail is open to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, however, the trail is not groomed and skiers and snowshoers must share the trail with snowmobiles. Skiers do not need a trail pass while using the trail.
No hunting and trapping allowed on the trail
Gandy Dancer Trail
The 98-mile recreation trail follows the railroad grade from St. Croix Falls north to Superior. The southern segment from St. Croix Falls to Danbury, 47-miles, is surfaced with crushed limestone offering a hard surface trail for biking and hiking from April through November.
A bike pass is required and can be purchased at the Polk County Tourism Center in St. Croix Falls and at points along the trail.
The northern segment, 51-miles, runs from Danbury through eastern Minnesota to Superior. This segment offers a wilder, more remote trail experience. Hiking, mountain biking and ATV use is permitted. No pass is needed, but ATVs must display valid registration.
From December to March the entire 98-mile trail is operated as a snowmobile trail. Mile post signs mark the distance from south to north.
The trail passes through many small towns in the southern segment, allowing for easy access to food, bathrooms, and lodging.

THE F.A.R.M. IS DESIGNED FOR SCHOOL, COMMUNITY SUSTAINABILITY
DRAWN FROM IDEAS LEARNED DURING A TRIP TO CONNECTICUT, THE AMERY PROGRAM OFFERS MUCH FOR STUDENTS AND THE COMMUNITY
By Raymond T. Rivard ray@sentinelmedia.net
Already well-known across the state and nation as one of the most active and progressive of Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapters, the Amery High School organization took an even larger step in their efforts after a weeklong visit to Woodbury, Conn., a few years ago.
Derrick Meyer, the Amery High School ag teacher who has a career in education spanning nearly 30 years, the first few in Stevens Point and the rest in Amery, has helped lead students and the program in directions that not only benefit the students and the school, but has built a program that is now benefitting the community as a whole.
“Our FFA chapter is well-known around the nation for being very competitive in a lot of contests, including our dairy judging teams that have won national championships,” Meyer said. Because of the success of the program, as an example, students have twice taken trips to Scotland to compete in an international setting.
However, it was the week-long trip to Connecticut where students stayed with families and shadowed their East Coast counterparts in school that helped open many doors for students, the staff and the school district.
Meyer said the Connecticut state government helps fund 11 separate ag programs in that state – these programs are called academies, and it was Meyer who helped start “academies” in Amery.
“We teach the basics and after that kids take things to another level … giving them the chance to take things to higher level of learning … taking it to a place where they could start their own businesses,” Meyer said.
With a goal to allow students opportunities to become entrepreneurs, Meyer believed the efforts would lead to even more important factors - helping not only the school district grow, but to help the community as a whole.
Citing studies that indicate students who are successful during their high school years in developing their own business activities, Meyer said those students are more likely to come
back to their communities after their higher education studies to live, raise families, and contribute as taxpaying citizens.
Other business ventures that stemmed from the ag program included a mobile chicken farm, raising and selling small animals, sales of salt water fish out of students’ homes, as well as In addition, the district has also developed an aquaculture program where the subject of raising fish is taught. Meyer said that some of the fish raised are used periodically to “feed the whole school.”
The program has also seen a huge boost in recent years after the district bought the “old Peters farm” – property located across the road from the Amery High School.
Meyer said the district has many plans for developing the property, plans that will help students across the school curriculum.
The F.A.R.M.
It began with the building and selling of homes by students on the property … projects that have helped raise significant revenue.
“We thought ‘why not buy the property across road?’ The idea was to start by building homes, selling them, and putting them back on the tax rolls. That’s a win-win for the community and for us,” Meyer said.
20 Explore Amery 2024-2025
“There are plans for more houses,” he added.
The newest efforts have also brought about “Fostering Agriculture Skills and Responsibility through Mentorship Programs,” also known as The F.A.R.M.
While there are three phases to the program, Meyer said there have been some programs that have been jumpstarted, such as growing annual crops, developing a corn maze, and starting a honey bee operation.
However, a phase 2 will also call for the development of an orchard and walking trails, school vegetable gardens, raising goats, sheep, and hogs, and horse training opportunities.
Looking long-term, one of those programs – the Christmas tree farm – Meyer said kindergartners plant trees and when they are in high school will be allowed to harvest one of the trees for their family’s holiday celebrations.
As for the corn maze, Meyer said it’s not just an ordinary maze, “it’s an educational corn maze … there’s educational sites inside when go through.”
Over the past couple of years, there have been more than 2,000 individuals who have gone through the maze.
“All elementary and middle school students go through it,” he said.
Big picture
In the end, it’s the big picture that’s most important to Meyer. It’s more than just building houses and facilities. It’s about offering students the best opportunities for learning lifelong skills.
“We’re working together to keep kids in the Amery area. It’s been proven that kids involved in school most likely stay in school … there are so many benefits. The big picture … is that we’re taking it to a whole other level for the benefits of our communities and for our kids,” Meyer said.
Describing the programs being offered as providing a “win-win” for the district and community, Meyer added, “That’s what we’re running for. More educational opportunities for kids … using tech ed … giving them skills to better prepare for their future. And helping the community … the goal is not just for
the high school; it’s for all students and the community.”
While the program is relatively new for the district, its essence has been a dream for Meyer for years.
“We’ve put a lot of time and effort into it. We’ve been thinking about it for years.”
Meyer also considered sustainability while helping develop the programs now being utilized.
“We’ve been trying to think outside the box and how we can use it to educate all kids. We’ve been trying to make it something that will be here a long time and contribute to the community instead of taking from the community.”
He went on to show his gratitude.
“We want to make sure everyone knows how much we appreciate the community. It’s not something one person can take on and make work ... people have to see the value in what we’re doing,” he added.

THE EVENT OF THE YEAR
AMERY FALL FESTIVAL
The fall of 2024 will be a special time for Amery’s fall festival as it turns 75 years old. The celebration, created in 1949, is the largest event the city puts on. Although much has changed since its inception, the one thing that hasn’t is enjoying the day with good company from the community.
The event is now a staple among residents of the area coming to town during to enjoy a weekend out and about with many things to do. There will be car shows for your classic rides, great local food, games out and about for the kids to enjoy, some rides if you’re feeling up to it, and some art and craft stands at the tip of your fingers. All of the fun
in town culminates into the main event: the parade.
The fall festival is one of, if not, the most popular town celebration in
the area. Year after year it revitalizes community members’ spirits as they head into fall and celebrate all that is Amery.

AMERY SUMMERS WILL BE MUSIC TO YOUR EARS
What’s better than a nice day enjoying music? How about enjoying it all summer. Music on the River is a series of local and big name bands that come to town to put on shows for its residents and introduce locals to area artists. This a three-part concert series featuring an opener and headliner makes it feel like the event is on the big stage. Entering its 12th year, the event continues to grow to the melody of great laughs and company. Last year had a local celebrity flex his vocal skills. Chris Kroeze took the stage and gave the audience a memorable experience. If you’re looking for a more affordable event to take friends and family, this will be right up your alley. Music on the River is free to anyone who wants to listen and is made possible by Amery’s local businesses and sponsors. The performances begin in June and end in August, giving folks opportunities to enjoy throughout the season of summer.

AMERY ART & CRAFT FAIR
The Amery Art Fair is a huge attraction among those who love art. Many artists and residents make the time to come to the event as it is massively popular for all those in the area. The event only keeps getting bigger as for 2024, over 160 venders will have a spot to set up shop, and bring their one of a kind art to the city. The art fair is held the Saturday before Father’s Day, and will run from nine in the morning until three in the afternoon in North Park. Many who have gone in the past describe their purchases as one of a kind and leave satisfied with the beautiful artwork in their hands. Not only are you helping local artists in their craft but you also support scholarship opportunities for high school graduates, leaders, and non-traditional students. There will be a little something for everyone as the stands will have different styles of paintings, wood working, jewelry, and much more. Come find your next work of art this fun weekend!
HOLLY JOLLY STROLL
The Holly Jolly Stroll is just what folks need this time of year to get them into the holiday spirit. This upcoming season will mark 39 years of the event and is a good way to get out of the house when it starts to get chilly out. During this time there are many different activities to excite the kids and the kids at heart. One of the most memorable experiences of the event is the parade of lights on main street where floats show off their holiday lights to shine with holiday cheer. The event also features its very own Mr. and Mrs. Claus, allowing for photo opportunities with the kids and for them to tell them what they would like for Christmas. During the event there will be ways to also let your sweet tooth loose while staying warm. During the stroll, hot chocolate, chili, and smores around a warm fire helps to keep everyone enjoying a great time with the community. If you were looking for a memorable experience, they also bring in horse drawn carriage rides to enjoy the wintery scenery as you roll through town. There is always a little bit of something for everyone during this holiday celebration.

WHAT’S GOING ON AT THE AMERY AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND MUSEUM?
The Amery Area Historical Society and Museum (AAHSM) is a volunteer organization staffed by individuals dedicated to the preservation of the history of Amery and the surrounding area for generations to come. We have been working steadily to purchase a permanent home for a museum for all to experience. We are truly grateful for your generous donations to the Amery Area Historical Society and Museum in 2023. Without the kind and generous donations from individuals, organizations, and private parties, we cannot survive. Your donations ensure we reach our museum goals and secure a vital link between our community’s past, present, and future.
WE BOUGHT A BUILDING! You may wonder what we have done with the $100,000 we raised in 2023. We have a 2-year window to pay off the mortgage of about $96,000. Doing so would take a great deal of worry and stress off our historical society. Here is the breakdown to date:
• Purchase down payment$52,000
• Estimated Total Upgrades and repairs – $21,000
• Monthly principle & interest payment – $1,800/month.
Our most immediate need is the recently discovered sinking floor in two areas of our newly purchased building. The repair cost is estimated at $8,000. Beyond that repair, our wish list includes:
• Classroom furniture - tables & chairs
• Classroom Audio/Visual equipment
• Display cabinets and shelving
• Interior and Exterior Signage
• Computer, Printer, Scanner
OUR FUNDRAISING EFFORTS! As part of our fundraising and grant efforts, we are participating in the following:

You can get your copy at one of the following: Amery Area Public Library, Bowman Leather and Ruby Mae’s. We can also mail you a copy ($40) if you are not in the local area. Contact us at: ameryhistory@ gmail.com.
Members of the Amery Area Historical Society & Museum purchased books to donate to the Amery Schools to include the Superintendent of Amery Schools (Larry & Julie Riemenschneider), the Amery High School Library (Marlene Gustafson), and the Intermediate School Library (Ruth Mugerauer). Our senior residential facilities also receive donated copies. These include the Amery Memory Care (Gary & Dianna Haley), Evergreen Village (Paul Fennern), Golden Age Manor (Janet Sylvester), Riverbend Senior Living
(Karen Odegard) and Willow Ridge (Elaine Sandin).
If you would like to donate a copy of the 2024 Centennial Book, please contact us at ameryhistory@gmail. com and we will make that happen.
We hope our local and area businesses will consider becoming a Business Member of the Amery Area Historical Society and Museum. The cost is $50 yearly. We are always looking for individuals to join our historical society also. The cost is $15 for an individual or $25 for a family. To address the confusion that many of you have, belonging to our Amery Historical Society Facebook page IS NOT the same as becoming a member of our organization.
The Board, our members, and volunteers of the Amery Area Historical Society and Museum thank you for considering the Amery Area Historical Society & Museum for your 2024 donations. We would love to talk to you! Please reach out to any of our board members or contact us at Ameryhistory@gmail.com.

Airport
Amery Municipal Airport, located at the south end of the city, features a number of amenities to make a visit by air a pleasant experience. The newly paved 75 by 4,000 foot north/south runway can accommodate a variety of aircraft , including small jets. The large ramp provides plenty of tie-down space. There are GPS-RNAV approaches available for inclement weather, as well as pilot controlled lighting that can be activated by 3 clicks on the Unicom frequency (122.8). Newly installed PAPI (Precision Approach Path Indicator) lights help guide pilots down the glideslope.
Both 100LL and JetA with Prist aviation fuels are available 24/7 from our new automated credit card self serve system. MasterCard, Visa, Discover and multi-serve cards are accepted. The pilot lounge, which is always open 24/7, features a restroom, vending machine, aviation weather computer and comfortable furniture.
Further information can be obtained by calling Amery City Hall at (715) 268-7486.

VOTER INFORMATION
Polk County handles all election preparations, publications and ballots for the voters of Polk County. The ballots are distributed to the municipalities prior to the election. Each municipality is responsible for submitting the results to the County Clerk as soon as possible after the polls close. Those results are tallied at the County Clerk’s office the night of an election and made available to the public and news media. Past election poll lists and results are on file and open to the public.
How do I vote?
To request an absentee ballot or to find out where to vote the day of the election, contact your municipal or town clerk. If you are uncertain who your clerk is or how they can be reached, please call the County Clerk at 715-485-9226.
The completed absentee ballot must be received by the municipal clerk no later than 8 a.m. the day of the election.
Voter registration
Residents voting in person can register at the time they vote by
bringing a photo identification and an envelope/bill addressed to them at their home address from a utility or business to establish their residency.
Direct voter registration questions to your municipal or town clerk or call the Polk County Clerk 715-485-9226.
