GRANTSBURG—Less than nine months have passed since the idea of memorializing Marine Sergeant Carson Holmquist by renaming a state highway in his honor was an inkling of an idea, to Tuesday, when Gov. Scott Walker was in Grantsburg to sign the legislation into law.

“By signing this law, we are paying a lasting tribute to a real hero,” Gov. Walker told those who crowded into the high school auditorium, including Carson’s family.

Holmquist, a 2008 graduate of Grantsburg High School, is the Grantsburg Marine who lost his life in a suspected terrorist shooting in Chattanooga in July, 2015.

“Carson was born in St. Croix Falls and raised in Grantsburg, and we feel it’s only fitting to make the highway connecting both cities a memorial highway in his honor,” Katie Clifford explained of a petition to get the grassroots effort underway. “There are a lot of us area and former Grantsburg residents trying to show our respect.”

State Senator Sheila Harsdorf and Rep. Adam Jarchow created the bill, got it through their respective committees, got the bill signed and passed, and then forwarded it to the Governor.

GRANTSBURG–World War II veteran Gene Gronlund, 90, of Grantsburg will be among 77 veterans touring Washington D.C.’s national veterans memorials on Saturday, April 16. His daughter, Janet Hayne, will accompany him.

The veterans are guests of Honor Flight, Minnesota chapter, and the Minnesota Vietnam Veterans Charity.

This will be the 14th charter flight the Minnesota group has sponsored for veterans since September of 2008.

The Minnesota chapter has flown 1,288 Minnesota area veterans on the one-day trip to see all the veterans’ memorials.

In addition, veterans from seven other Honor Flight “hub cities” across the U.S. will arrive in Washington that day, so the nation’s capital will be host to about 500 mostly WWII vets.

SIREN—The State of Wisconsin lived up to its nickname of a “battleground” state in the 2016 battle for the White House on Tuesday.

State-wide, close to 50 percent of eligible voters were projected to find their way to the polls to cast a ballot during the presidential primary. The last time turnout topped the 40 percent mark was in SEE ELECTION, PAGE 2

Going to the dogs?

•Burnett County considers adding K-9 to law enforcement arsenal.

SIREN—The fact Burnett County is being inundated with narcotics cases — the $300,000 in stolen property in 2014 alone, to fuel the purchase of illegal drugs, is the reasoning behind why the sheriff’s department wants to develop its own K-9 program.

“We’re kind of like an island up here,” Sheriff Ron Wilhelm told the Burnett County Board of Supervisors last week. “We are one of the only jurisdictions without a dog.”

He sees the primary purposes of the K-9 as twofold.

“The dog would assist with executing search warrants, but the dog’s main duty would be to work in tandem with other deputies on traffic stops,” the sheriff continued. “I think it could be a tremendous tool.”

Why tandem?

“The law says we can only hold a vehicle for about 12 minutes on a traffic stop — although that’s not a hard and fast rule,” Wilhelm stated.

“If the K-9 was not working in tandem with the deputies doing traffic stops, there’d be no way the K-9 could get to the scene to do a quick walk-around of the vehicle within that time frame.”

The timing would be critical because if the dog “hit” on the vehicle, detecting the odor of narcotics, that’s enough probable cause for the deputies to detain the vehicle and conduct a thorough search.

The sheriff points to a lot of community support to start a K-9 program.

“We’ve already received about $4,000 toward the program, and we haven’t even solicited funds yet — the support has been overwhelming,” Wilhelm declared. “The community as a whole is behind it.

“We’ve even talked about some sort of competition among schoolaged kids to name the dog — we want everyone to know the dog.”

But funding the program was the gist of Thursday’s presentation.

All along, it has been Wilhelm’s desire to have the program not be another drain on taxpayers, but rather to make it a sustainable program through donations.

To that end, he connected with the St. Croix Valley Foundation, the group used by St. Croix County for its successful K-9 program — a

program Wilhelm is attempting to emulate.

Margi Miller, an affiliate development officer for the foundation, was at Thursday’s meeting to answer questions about the possibility of Burnett County creating a K-9 fund with the foundation.

“If you set up a K-9 fund with the foundation, donors would get a tax deduction for any donations they make,” she told the supervisors. “I truly think that is the biggest benefit of a fund with us.”

The downside of dealing with the foundation are the fees it charges, including a set-up and annual fee plus a small quarterly percentage of the fund’s balance.

“Sounds like a win-win for the foundation,” Don Taylor, board chairman, remarked.

“Well, we do have to keep the lights on,” Miller replied.

But, the tax deduction argument got supervisors thinking why go out of house to establish the fund?

“The county could set up its own fund,” Jerry Pardun pointed out.

“We could make the fund 501(c)3 (tax-exempt) and offer a deduction ourselves.”

Member Dale Dresel agreed.

“The sheriff’s department auxiliary is tax exempt,” he reported.

“We could do the same with a K-9 fund.”

While a final decision was not made Thursday, Wilhelm did say running the financing of the program through the foundation would cut down on the paperwork the sheriff’s department has to do.

A decision to move forward with the K-9 program could come as early as this week, when the county’s public safety committee takes up the debate.

SIREN—Bethany Lutheran in Siren is recognizing its 95th anniversary at its 8:30 a.m. service on Sunday, April 9. The congregation extends its welcome to everyone to attend the service and fellowship afterward.

In the Republican race for the White House, Ted Cruz easily defeated Donald Trump 48 to 35 percent or 527,000 to 383,00. The Democratic race was a little tighter with Bernie Sanders capturing 57 percent of the vote or 563,000 to Hillary Clinton’s 43 percent or 429,000.

For the Wisconsin Supreme Court, Rebecca Bradley garnered the most votes in any race, amassing 1,008,000 votes, or 52 percent, to put down a challenge from JoAnne Kloppenburg, who earned 917,000 votes or 48 percent of the vote.

Closer to home, voters in Burnett County gave the nod to Trump, 1,628 to Cruz’s 1,169 but mimicked the state-wide turnout in the Democratic race with Sanders earning 933 ballots while Clinton earned 917.

In the state Supreme Court race, the county agreed with the rest of the voters in the state, giving Bradley the edge over Kloppenburg, 2,501 to 2,081.

It should be noted 55 percent of the registered voters in Burnett County cast a ballot in Tuesday’s spring election.

In county races, Duane Johnson won a seat on the Burnett County Board of Supervisors with the defeat of Phil Lindeman, 153 votes to 102 votes.

In village board elections, Greg Peer, John Dickinsen II and Scott DeRocker were the top three vote-getters for the three open trustee seats. Incumbent Rayna Surdey came in fourth.

In Siren and Webster, incumbents ruled the day as Rudy Mothes and Dave Doty earned their way back on the board, garnering 161 and 156 votes respectively.

In Webster, Kelsey Gustafson, Greg Widiker and Sarah Casady were returned to office, earning 134, 133 and 112 votes, respectively. Municipal Judge Brian Sears ran unopposed as well and was returned to office winning 158 votes.

In the only race amongst local school boards, Webster’s Mark Elliott won another term winning 1.039 votes and will be joined by Katie Smith who received 1,016 votes. Fellow challenger Miki Geisler-Messer finished the race with 766 votes.

As in village races, the incumbents ruled the day in both Siren and Grantsburg.

In Siren, Rhonda Highstrom and Duane Emery were returned to office with 724 and 608 votes respectively. In Grantsburg, Russ Erickson, Dan Ohnstad, Josh Prusinski and Dave Dahlberg earned 1,110, 1,162, 1,039 and 1,139 votes respectively and will serve another term.

Learn To Hunt Turkey event April 22-24 at Crex GRANTSBURG—Those interested in building a strong connection with nature, learning more about conservation, eating locally and sustainably, and receiving hands-on training from hunting experts are encouraged to head to Crex Meadows Wildlife Area in April for a “Learn to Hunt Turkey” event.

Learn-to-Hunt events welcome novice adult and youth (12 years and older) hunters. A classroom segment and range session for shooting practice are set from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 22 at Crex Meadows. Dinner will be provided onsite.

A turkey hunt for students will occur April 23-24.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources encourages friends or families with no hunting connection to sign up in groups and enjoy this unique experience together. Wisconsin’s hunting tradition is all about families learning and hunting together, and Wisconsin’s woods and fields in spring are the perfect place to experience hunting for the first time.

This Learn to Hunt Turkey event will pair each student with an experienced hunter. Here, attendees will learn about conservation, hunting tactics, and firearm safety during the classroom portion of the event. They will also have an opportunity to experience turkey hunting in Wisconsin.

Pre-registration is required by April 15.

Space is limited to 12 participants. The event is free of charge.

Since novices will be hunting with a mentor, hunter education requirements are waived and no license is required. Hunting gear will be provided if needed, and bunkhouses are available to participants.

Wildlife art silent auction GRANTSBURG—Donated prints from renowned wildlife artists including Thomas Moen, Ron Brown, David Maass and Louis Raymer are now being offered in a silent auction at Crex Meadows Wildlife Education and Visitor Center in Grantsburg.

Bidding will close at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 16. Bidders need not be present at the close of the auction and will be notified of their winning within two days of the auction close.

All proceeds will benefit the construction of a new education and dining building at the Crex Meadows headquarters. During summer months, Crex Meadows Youth Conservation Camp will use the new building as a classroom and dining hall. The remainder of the year, it will be available for wildlife conservation education programs and to other organizations.

SPOONER—Garden enthusiasts can learn the art and science of apple pruning and grafting at two separate workshops on

According to Kevin Schoessow, Area Ag Development Agent for the University of Wisconsin Extension, an apple pruning workshop is scheduled from 3-5 p.m., followed by an apple grafting workshop from 6:30-8 p.m.

Both workshops are open to the general public and will be conducted by Kevin Schoessow, UW-Extension Area Agriculture Development Educator for Burnett, Washburn and Sawyer counties.

The pruning workshop from 3-5 p.m. will be held outdoors, rain or shine, at Jeff and Sue Burch’s farm located two miles north of Spooner on Co. Hwy K. The Burch’s operate a small, direct-market farm, which includes a small orchard, low-line beef cattle, and vegetables. This hands-on workshop will allow participants to see firsthand how mature and young apple trees are pruned and trained for optimum health and fruit production. There is no cost for the pruning workshop; however participants are asked to call and pre-register, as space is limited.

The grafting workshop from 6:30-8 p.m. will be held at the Spooner Agriculture Research Station’s public meeting room. In this workshop, participants can learn the art and science of grafting an apple scion twig to an apple rootstock.

Each participant will receive three rootstocks and scion wood for a hands-on grafting experience. Registered participants are asked to bring along a pair of leather gloves and a sharp knife (utility or grafting).

Enrollment for the grafting workshop is limited to 20 participants and accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. A paid registration is required to reserve a spot. Registration deadline is April 13.

Post election blues So, did you vote?

If you’re like me, you faced a lot of indecision when it came to putting that checkmark next to your candidate of choice for the presidential primary. Heck, when I wrote this column last week I still wasn’t sure who I wanted to side with.

On the one hand there’s Ted Cruz who wants to shrink the size of the bureaucracy in Washington, D.C. On another hand we have Bernie Sanders who supporters claim is the ‘real deal.’

On a third hand we have Hillary Clinton who says Obamacare is crushing people.

Or how about John Kasich?

Wait a minute — that’s too many hands!

And what about Donald Seems to Trump, you may inquire?

Don’t know about you, but I Me feel the need for a shower every I hear him speak.

Todd Beckmann time I’m sure it is because of the job, I have but my email inbox is inundated on a daily, almost hourly, or even half-hourly basis — Hillary for America this, DNC that, Russ for Wisconsin this, Mark Pocan HQ that — it never ends.

I will give them high marks for persistence — they keep sending this crap whether people want it or not.

I wish I could say it’s all over, but with other states having primaries later this month, the Democratic and Republican parties each having their conventions this summer and the lead-up to the general election in November, I‘m afraid it’s far from over — it’s probably just getting started.

Of course, there are some who portend it doesn’t really matter.

I guess I could see their argument but I don’t agree with them.

The beauty of democracy is that you can vote for whomever you choose. In the end it doesn’t really matter whether your candidate wins or loses — what matters is you made the decision to cast a ballot for the candidate of your choice.

With that comes the inalienable right to complain about the winner, if it happens to be someone other than who you voted for.

There are those pundits who will argue that one man or woman in the Oval Office doesn’t make a difference, as it is the Congress which controls the direction of the country.

If that’s the case, your vote in Tuesday’s primary was meaningless and the real focus has to be in November when Wisconsonites go to the polls to cast ballots for their U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives.

Worthy race Ron Aldorfer stopped me the other day on my walk and told me the organizers of the Shamwalk/Run in Siren around St. Patrick’s Day really know what they are doing.

Apparently, the winners of each age bracket in the race were each awarded a prize. Ron won the over-70 bracket.

“I was thinking it was going to be a pizza or something,” Ron said.

But instead, he was awarded an overnight stay at the Lodge at Crooked Lake in Siren.

Winning a hotel stay is certainly not the reason why people sign up to run a 5K, but it could well be the reason they come back.

The lost art of childhood I saw a Facebook post recently, written in much better cursive than I was ever able to manage, that said “Someday us old folks will use cursive writing as a secret code.”

I had a good chuckle about it and nodded my assent. I may even have “liked” the post.

I began thinking about how different my grandchildren’s childhood From the will be from what Publisher’s I experienced, or even their parents’ Desk childhood.

When I was a Tom Stangl kid, we played outside because our mothers would kill us if we messed up the house. My wife and I had a hard time getting our children outside when they became teens.

Video games, cell phones and the Internet were just coming into wide usage, so we had challenges as parents, but my daughters turned out to be good people. (I am biased.)

We didn’t allow our children to have cell phones until they were driving. Our youngest daughter had to suffer for a full year without having the capability to send text

messages. (Yes, I was a neanderthal.)

Today, a lot of our lives revolve around screens. If we aren’t working on computers, we are spending time on smartphones, tablets and game consoles. I was speaking with a software developer at a press association meeting earlier this year and he referred to smartphones as “adult pacifiers,” noting that whenever people had to wait they often get their phones out to entertain themselves until the time has passed.

I get that, having owned a smartphone for nearly two years. I find it most useful to help me avoid getting lost.

But I can only imagine the mischief that a pre-teen or teen can get into with a device that fits in their pocket and gives instantaneous access to a world of information.

I believe the wide availability to this technology is another example of how our society has once again failed to keep pace with technology. Teens need to be 16 to legally drive on their own, 18 to vote and sign contracts and 21 to consume alcohol.

Cell phones that can take photos and transmit them to others are now given to children before middle school.

developed, children can bully each other, view pornography and meet all sorts of people that they normally wouldn’t have access or any reason to interact with until they were much older.

With a few keystrokes or swipes, some life changing bad decisions can be made, bells that can never be unrung.

Yes, a case can be made that we live in a global society and the more our children learn about it, it may give them an edge later in life.

To me, a just as compelling case can be made for learning how to fish and hunt, how to identify the constellations in the night sky and enjoying the nuances of novels like Watership Down and Harry Potter.

Learning how to ride a bike and spend a day entertaining yourself without the benefit of electricity and the Internet will always trump getting the high score on a video game. The cost and benefits of this period in life are only compounded with age.

We woke up on Saturday to a white ground again. One nice thing is we know this white stuff is not going to stick around. We are getting items in for the silent auction and door prizes. We are hoping people will stop in and do some bidding to support the Senior Center.

To the Editor: Each time I have crossed the St. Croix River during my move to Wisconsin, I look over and smile.

Then, “Welcome to Wisconsin.” Out loud, I say, “Thank you,” and sometimes I add, “I’m glad to be here.”

Next: “Grantsburg, 4 miles.” I smile again.

My new home.

This place brings me back, a sense of another time, almost hauntingly so. One can think, ponder, imagine. I’m ten again under the majesty of mature white pines bobbing against the northwest wind.

A neighbor stops by to welcome me while I’m surveying the much-needed yardwork of a home vacated for some time.

I know about the bears, and I’ve lived in black bear country before. What I didn’t know is my yard is a bear thoroughfare, my new neighbor warns me.

Okay, I can handle that. Bird feeder is now hoisted about 16 feet. Is that high enough? It

better be, because that’s as high as this old arm can fling a rubber dog bone, tied to a rope, over a limb.

I might be scared of bears.

Be mindful. Be smart. Plus, the dogs will warn me, right?

On my last trip from Minnesota, I stopped at the chainsaw bear carving guy on Hwy. 70. Incredible work.

How can one carve such subtle and varied expression with a tool that can be as cumbersome as a chainsaw is beyond me, an artist of fine line with pen and brush.

I wasn’t prepared that day for such a purchase, but I’m going back to get one of Perry’s bears.

I figure if I have my own, permanently directing traffic, maybe I won’t feel ten about the bears. Feeling ten is only great sometimes.

Just in case, though, will someone tell me when the first ones emerge?

Welcome to April. It feels like March, but the weather people say 60 degrees is right around the corner.

Birthday wishes to Gladys Beers, Nancy Pieper and Judy Bauerfeld and all others celebrating their special day in April.

Fourteen came to play dime bingo. There is always room for more.

No need to call, just come in. We play at 12:30 p.m. every Wednesday.

There were six players for dominoes with Judy B winning. I might mention that she is the scorekeeper. Could there be something in her pen that causes that?

Wii bowling was exciting and competitive as usual. Pat N had high individual game with 299 and also high series at 526. Good job! The Happy Strikers had high

team game and series, 780 and 1557. Bill B picked up the 2-5-7 split, Harvey the 4-7-10 and Fred the 5-7. There were several in the 200 club, Bill B 212, 212 210, Gordy 200, Pat 227, Bill P 207 and Vickie 200.

We will be playing Horse Race the second Saturday of the month starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 9.

We are also going to have a Wii bowling day for anyone who wants to join in, the third Saturday of every month beginning at 10 a.m.

Friends and family were fortunate to be treated to Lois Anderson’s scrumptious cinnamon rolls and goodies that she baked for us on Friday. In celebration of her “80th” birthday! Happy Birthday and thank you, Lois!

Well, after working all week preparing for our rummage sale, we awoke Saturday morning to wildly wicked winds and blowing snow surrounding us! Thankfully, we still had many attend the sale to help make it a success! Thank you to all who helped by the giving of donations or by physically helping!

We were so glad to see Pete and Judy, back from their Spring/Easter trip to Omaha! (Did I mention, just in time to help at the sale too!)

We also welcomed the first of our snow birds, Carol & Bob who just returned from Arizona this week, too!

The Fremstad family

Anna Olive Fremstad, world famous operatic singer who performed before royalty and many other followers of the opera, was born in 1872 in Stockholm, Sweden. In 1880, she emigrated to America with her parents, settling in Minnesota. Her father, Dr. Ole Fremstad, was a talented musician and band instructor as well as a physician. Her mother, Anna Fremstad, was a qualified midwife. In 1894, the family moved to Grantsburg, where the parents practiced their professions until their deaths. Madam Fremstad died in New York City in 1951. Her ashes were sent to Grantsburg and interred in the family plot in Riverside Cemetery, beside her parents, a brother and two sisters.

As did most “chores,” this meant extra hard work. Water had to be pumped by hand from the well and carried into the house.

In our home, the water was heated in the wash boiler on top of the wood stove. Then one of the wash tubs was carried in and placed in front of the open oven door. This was partially filled with cold water and enough warm water to make it a comfortable temperature, at least for the first family member’s bath.

Usually the first bather was the youngest member of the family, unless that was a baby. Other family members followed, with our parents bathing last.

By that time, we kids were in bed. Depending on the number of family members, the water may have been changed, with used water dumped outdoors, bath water replaced.

Finally, the last used water was carried out; the emptied vessels were all carried out to their storage place and order was restored in the kitchen — until next Saturday night.

Teaching reading in Country School I taught Country School in rural Burnett County, starting at age 18. It was the fall after I graduated from high school.

I had spent my senior year as a student teacher, learning to take charge of a country school and the students myself.

I usually had 45 or more pupils across Grades 1-8. Sometimes I marvel that first graders learned to read. They had very little actual instruction time.

The statewide program for rural schools with eight grades allowed 40 minutes of instruction time each day for their three reading classes.

Phonics play a big part of the reading instruction. Later in the first year, we added some whole-word recognition for words like “the, and, my, you, are, small, big, and who.”

During my rural school teaching years, the reading material for the early grades was built on the theme “All About Dick and Jane.” The kids loved to read the adventures of Dick and Jane. Most were funny.

Phonics played a key for young readers learning to “unlock” words. Knowing the sounds of the consonants as well as the different sounds for the vowels was a handy tool for the young readers.

Some students got extra help at home from parents or older siblings.

Once in a while, a first grader knew how to read when starting school. That gave them a real “head start” to learning.

Our country school library had a limited supply of books for early readers, but every class had several students who could master the unlocking of sounds and words, and make their way through the library books in their first year.

GRONLUND: World War II vet to visit memorials in Washington D.C. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

The group will first visit the Iwo Jima Memorial, then drive to the Women’s Memorial at Arlington Cemetery. Next stop will be the Air Force Memorial for a visit and box lunch.

They will drive past the Washington Monument and White House on their way to the World War II Memorial, constructed in 2004, where they will attend a flag service and Taps Ceremony.

Next stop will be the Korean Memorial for a visit and Taps Ceremony. From there they will walk to the nearby Vietnam Memorial and Lincoln Memorial.

The day’s final stop will be at Arlington Cemetery to witness the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. After an evening meal they will depart for Minneapolis.

“We’ll be singing songs from the 1940s-50s on the way home,” Gene says.

“I love to sing, so that will be fun too.”

The trip is provided free of charge to the veterans, in honor of their wartime service to their country.

The guardians who accompany the vets each donate $500 toward expenses.

On Gene’s flight, 71 are WWII vets and six are Korean Conflict vets. They had a chance to meet one another last Sunday at a pre-flight gathering in Roseville and to hear the Honor Flight story as told by its founder.

The Honor Flight is a challenging day for any person, let alone veterans who

are mostly in their 80s or 90s. The flight leaves Minneapolis/St. Paul airport at 6 a.m. and returns at about 10:30 p.m. the same day. While in D.C., they will get on and off the bus seven times and do a fair amount of walking.

Gene had to submit a medical form attesting he was fit enough to make the trip. It wasn’t a problem for him, as he starts every day with 50 push-ups.

Next, he does 50 arm curls with his two 15-pound weights, then lifts them 50 times over his head.

“It’s not hard when you do it every day,” he said. When weather allows, he also walks one mile per day, often accompanied by his wife, Marilyn.

Janet, of Taylors Falls, Minn., and Gene have been looking forward to the D.C. memorials trip since they applied for it about a year ago. The organization says its waiting list is long and growing.

Born Aug. 9, 1925 in Falun, Gene is a lifelong resident of Burnett County.

Gene started first grade as a very young five-year-old attending the oneroom Mudhen Lake School. He finished eight grade at the Falun School and then graduated from Grantsburg High School in 1942, at age 16.

Gene was ready to “join up” for WWII military service right away and follow his two older brothers into the military, but his mother felt otherwise. He needed her signature, as he was under age 18. “She wouldn’t sign for me,” Gene recalls, “because my two older brothers

were already serving,” he said. Carl was with the Army and Lynn with the Army Air Force, both in the South Pacific region.

When he turned 18 he signed up immediately and was on his way to Navy training at Great Lakes in Chicago.

He was assigned to become a medical corpsman and received training as Pharmacist’s Mate, Second Class. His first posting was to the Navy Hospital in Chelsea, MA. When they learned he could type well, he was assigned to the office and spent the balance of his three-year military service in offices.

“That high school typing class may have saved my life,” he says.

Soon he was off to South Pacific assignments, usually at a Naval hospital.

In the New Hebrides Islands, the hospital also has warehouses full of medical supplies to outfit the fleets and their hospital ships that were hitting the beaches, Gene remembers.

After the war, he returned to Falun, bought his step-dad’s school bus and took over the route between Falun and Grantsburg High School.

While driving the school bus, a young lady named Marilyn Peterson caught his eye. Later, she began working in the Carlson and Johnson Grocery Store where he was employed, and the sparks of romance were ignited.

They were married in 1951 at the English Lutheran Church in Grantsburg.

Gene owned and operated the Gambles Hardware Store in Falun for 12 years, then sold it and purchased the Texaco fuels franchise in Grantsburg.

He and his hired man in a second truck delivered fuel oil to homes and farms and gasoline to about a half dozen gas stations in the area.

It was a successful business, allowing Gene to retire at age 55 in 1980, and taking on small jobs to keep busy.

Many will remember him wearing his stars-and-stripes Uncle Sam outfit with top hat while walking atop stilts that added another two feet to his 6’2” frame.

He was a feature in many parades until Marilyn insisted that he give it up, at age 87.

“When I would walk into the gymnasium, they would have the little ones seated on the floor, and I was about 9 feet tall, he laughs. “I loved to see the look on their faces when I walked over to the basketball hoop and dropped the ball through,” he said.

He still fits into his WWII Navy cap and pea coat.

Gene is grateful for the trip to D.C., and for the opportunity to pay tribute to his fallen comrades.

“It is interesting that Vietnam Veterans are among the sponsors,” Marilyn says, “especially when you think of the negative reception many of them received when they returned home from that war,” she says. “They want to be sure that all veterans are appreciated.”

Outdoor retreat grand opening slated for June

SUPERIOR— Over the last few years, volunteers have been hard at work turning a 14-acre parcel of land in Dairyland from a wooded area to a retreat where veterans can relax in the outdoors.

They’ve managed to get a well in, cleared land and moved a lot of dirt, constructed a pavilion, and shower and storage building, developed 12 recreational vehicle sites, and even erected a flagpole, donated in honor of fallen Marine Sgt. Chad Allen.

His parents, Steve and Deb Allen, lived in Dairyland when he was killed in Iraq in 2007.

But there’s more work to be done.

Now four organizations that support veterans are coming together to help.

The Superior Elks Lodge 403 in cooperation with the American Legion Richard I. Bong Post 435, Submarine Veterans Western Superior Base and the Retired Enlisted Association Superior Chapter 119 are hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser April 8 to help pay for construction costs. The dinner runs 5-8 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 1503 Belknap St. “The union plumbers are coming down,� said Rod Wilson, director of the Dairyland Outdoor Veterans Retreat on County Road TT at the Radigan Dam waterway. “We’ve had so much luck with the unions up here. The union carpenters built this,� he said, pointing to a photograph of the shower house and storage building on the site. “We sided it, but they built it and roofed it up. “We’ve got 12 RV sites ready to go for the May 7 fishing opener. Our grand opening is June 3-4, and everyone who knows about this is invited.�

The retreat is a nonprofit campground serving veterans, but the project has a

way to go, Wilson said. “It’s approved for seven cabins and 25 trailer sites,� Wilson said, which haven’t been built yet.

Wilson said the organization has been applying for grants, and five years into the project they are discovering that’s what it takes to get attention from grantors. “They don’t want any fly-by-nighters,�

Wilson said. He said the organization has applied for a $700,000 grant through Anderson Windows, as well as others in the ongoing effort to build a retreat where veterans can enjoy the outdoors in northern Wisconsin.

And helping the retreat reach its goal inspired the organizations to come together to raise money for the project. “I guess it started with the Elks,� said member Troy Magnuson. “We tried to get as many organizations involved as possible so we’d get the word out and get more people involved. We’re all trying to help veterans out so why not do one big project.�

The dinner includes the usual fair — spaghetti, garlic bread sticks and all the fixings. In addition, there will be two raffles with drawings to take place at a later date, three 50/50 drawings and a silent auction with proceeds going to the Dairyland Outdoor Veterans Retreat “It’s for veterans,� said Butch Liebaert of the Retired Enlisted Association. “We give all our money away one way or another,� said Dennis Bee of the American Legion Richard I. Bong Post 435. He said they’ve been looking for new ways to help veterans because some ideas haven’t worked as well as others.

However, they have found success when it comes to helping other veterans. “We always donate to the veterans home up on the shore (the veterans home in Silver Bay, Minn.), and they are

always very appreciative,� Bee said.

So when the opportunity to help the veterans retreat presented itself, they decided to get involved.

Magnuson said they also got the Submarine Veterans involved, which includes about 30 members in the area. “It’s something different for the organization,� Magnuson said.

Wilson said in addition to grant-writing and the fundraiser next week — and donations and in-kind contributions from nearly 70 organizations throughout northern Wisconsin and Minnesota, the retreat is selling pavers to memorialize veterans in a planned memorial garden. “Donations will be accepted,� Magnuson said. “The goal is to see what we can

get. There’s still a lot of projects.�

Wilson said the idea for the retreat started with a discussion with two new cabin owners — one with the American Legion and one with the VFW from New Richmond. During that conversation, he said they decided they had to do something for the veterans.

With a land donation from the county, and Dairyland Town Board approval, and a small number of early volunteers and the nine-member board got the ball rolling. “The whole purpose of all these groups is to help veterans,� Magnuson said. “It’s progressing,� Wilson said.

Safety of ‘sinking’ field called into question • Siren School Board has more questions than answers.

SIREN—The Siren Dragons may feel like they’ve got an uphill battle on their hands when the football team returns to the gridiron in August — they don’t need a sinking field to make matters worse.

That was the conundrum when the Siren School Board met last week.

Unfortunately, what they have now is a list of unanswered questions — Is it safe? Is it repairable? Should it be condemned? Do we contract with another school to host our home games?

And the list goes on.

At issue is the fact the current Siren football field was built on a former wetland area.

According to School Board President Peggy Moore, the trees growing where the field is now were bulldozed, and the field was built on those stumps. Combined with the existing water, those stumps are deteriorating and thus the field is sinking.

In fact, football officials would not allow football players to take the field twice last season until “dangerous” ruts and holes were filled in.

That led Kevin Shetler’s declaration last Monday night.

“I don’t think it’s safe to play on,” the district administrator told the board. “I don’t think we can play here during the 2016-17 season.”

But that may have been putting the cart before the horse.

“We have to determine whether it can be repaired, or should it be condemned?” Moore clarified.

At least one member was in favor of the latter.

“I say we condemn it now,” Duane Emery said. “We need to start moving on this. If we condemn it now, we can start collecting donations for whatever field we end up with.”

But Shetler thought that was jumping the gun.

“We need to assess the field we have,” he said. “And then if we have to, figure out where to play our home games this fall.”

But that led to more questions.

“We need to know if it is safe this year — and we need to know who determines that,” Moore pointed out.

“Above all else, we need to determine what our options are going forward.”

To that end, the board’s grounds committee will be meeting on April 18 to hopefully get some of these questions answered and to develop a time table on possible actions.

In other business: • Shetler and some of the board will be meeting with Webster superintendent Jim Erickson and some of that district’s school board in an effort to straighten out busing routes along Highway 70, the former division line between the districts.

“There are three or four properties, near Polansky Road, who assumed they were in the Siren district when in fact they are in the Webster district,” Moore stated. “They requested re-districting, but I think we just want to move those properties back into the Siren district.”

• Siren will be offering a threeweek summer school come June, but will be doing so without the benefit of busing.

“I think busing would make a huge difference in our numbers,” member Rhonda Highstrom mentioned.

Moore agreed.

“It’s not in the budget for this year, but I think it could be worthwhile to look into it for the summer of 2017,” she said.

Heather O’Brien is the coordinator of the June 13-July 1 session. The days are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with both breakfast and lunch being served. Middle and high schoolers will be concentrating on credit recovery and remediation, while elementary students will have classwork mixed with enrichment classes.

• High School Principal Jason Hinze reported only about 60 percent of parents attend high school conferences.

“We need to contact that other 40 percent somehow,” member Mark Pettis voiced. “We can’t expect students to excel if the parents don’t take an interest.”

• The board approved the 2016-17 school calendar, which features the first day of school on Sept. 1 and graduation on May 19, 2017.

“We talked with a lot of parents of next year’s seniors to get their input on that graduation date,” Moore explained.

• Shetler praised band instructor Bryn Anderson, a Kohl Fellowship Award winner, for excellence in education.

She won $3,000 for herself and another $3,000 for the school.

“Bryn has said she wants that money to go back into the music program,” Hinze noted.

At the same time, Burgin said the board will be making upgrades to the existing track. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The 6-lane track was designed and built in 1999 â&#x20AC;&#x201D; so the asphalt has shrunk with age, has gotten hard and is prone to cracking,â&#x20AC;? she commented. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The goal is to repair the base, add two additional lanes and add a rubberized surface.â&#x20AC;?

Plus, some additional fencing and bleacher work to accommodate the changes.

The $200,000 project is being planned in two phases, with phase one as construction of all components. Phase two includes top dressing the field.

The board will advertise for bids in April and will award the bid at the May 9 board meeting.

Reach out and read GRANTSBURG—Clinic providers at Burnett Medical Center are sending families home from checkups with free books and a very important prescription — “read aloud with your children.”

Friday, Senator Sheila Harsdorf visited the health center, not only to cheer them on, but to practice what doctors preach by reading to a group of young patients.

Burnett Medical Center participates in Reach Out and Read, a program that prepares America’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with medical providers to prescribe books and to encourage families to read together.

Medical professionals incorporate Reach Out and Read’s evidence-based model into regular pediatric checkups, by advising parents about the importance of reading aloud and giving developmentally-appropriate books to children. Through Reach Out and Read, each child starts kindergarten with a home library of up to 10 books. The program begins at the 6-month check-

up and continues through age 5, with a special emphasis on children growing up in low-income communities.

‘Marathon Man’ to speak in Webster

WEBSTER—Call him “Marathon Man.” Jim Anderson will speak about running marathons in all 50 states at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 14 at Larsen Family Public Library in Webster, to help celebrate Library Week.

Jim Anderson of Cable is an author and member of the 50 States Marathon Club.

A retired teacher living in Cable, WI, Jim did not start out running marathons. While a high school junior, he contracted spinal meningitis and was told that running would not be a part of his future.

Not one to give up, he decided to try cross-country skiing. He first skied the American Birkebeiner in 1977 and has not missed a race since. He is nothing if not persistent.

In 1982, Jim decided that if he could ski, he could also run. Although he had completed it many times previously, the first marathon on his “official” 50 State Marathon list is Grandma’s (Duluth), June, 1993.

However, it wasn’t until a few years later, after being told he was too old, that he decided to run a marathon in all 50 states. His quest ended with the Maui Marathon in Lahaina, Hawaii, on Sept. 21, 2014.

He credits his success to his competitive spirit, his perseverance and his wife, Denise.

He says “Denise never had to persuade me to keep after the goal, but she did have to help keep me from being too critical of myself for not doing well enough in some of the marathons.”

Jim chronicles the marathons in his book, Discovering America One Marathon at a Time. The book is more than the mechanics of running a marathon. It is also the story of

each place, its history and people. It is this that captivates the reader. He brings a fresh and distinctive perspective to each setting.

For Jim, 50 marathons in 50 states is not enough. “I’m already starting on my next goal of running the provinces and territories of Canada,” he said. “I’ve completed Thunder Bay, Ontario and Winnipeg, Manitoba. I’m also looking at The Great Wall of China Marathon to start the continents.”

Hard at work The crew from Jackson Fire’s Dive Team were busy Saturday morning in near blizzard conditions on Nicaboyne Lake in Webb Lake. They worked to recover an ATV and fishing equipment that fell through the ice a few weeks ago and were in 32 feet of water. Ironically, the ATV owner was in sunny Hawaii on a band trip when the crew recovered his ATV.

Seeing the capitol MADISON— The Siren fourth graders took their annual field trip to Madison on Friday, March 18.

While in Madison, they visited the Wisconsin Historical Museum and the Wisconsin State Capitol.

This is a great field trip for the students, as they are able to experience being visitors in another community, as well as learning about and seeing their state’s capitol in person. For the fifth year in a row, they took a coach bus courtesy of the St. Croix Tribe. The students and staff would like to extend great gratitude to them for the donation and support!

The trip is a memory that the students will have for a lifetime. When we wrote about our day, the students had some great things to say, including:“I saw a starfish fossil that was over a hundred million years old.”

“When you look at the dome, it’s like you are looking into the heavens.” “I liked the fur trade part at the museum the most.” “The guide told us that little people, like leprechauns, knock on rocks to know where the lead is.” “I learned that the Civil War camp was where the Wisconsin Badgers football stadium is.” “I thank the school for who gave us the money to eat and see all the beautiful stuff. I also thank the Tribe for the bus.” “My favorite part was I saw real gold in the Capitol.” “The ride was my favorite because we got to ride in a coach bus,” and “I was so tired when we got home, I didn’t even change into my pajamas!”

Tigers sweep New Lisbon

Siren enters season with stand-alone baseball team

MAUSTON—The Webster Tigers baseball team traveled to Woodside Sports Complex in Mauston this past weekend.

“Unfortunately the weather wasn’t cooperative and our games for Saturday had to be canceled due to snow covered fields,” reported coach Jarrod Washburn.

“We were however able to play a varsity doubleheader vs. New Lisbon on Friday evening as well as some valuable innings for our JV squad with a scrimmage vs. Hillsboro.”

Webster took the first game 9-8 and the second game 14-4.

“Game 1 of the doubleheader had the Tigers digging ourselves an early four run hole after just one inning of play. Fortunately we were able to collect ourselves and fight back for an exciting extra inning 9-8 win.”

“Jack Washburn got the start on the mound and after a rough first inning settled down for a strong 4 1/3 with six strikeouts. Trevor Gustafson came in to finish the game throwing 3 2/3 solid innings and picked up his first career varsity win.”

got the start and didn’t disappoint, taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning. He finished with four innings pitched, allowing only one hit and three walks to go along with seven strikeouts to earn his first career varsity win.”

Reviewing hoops changes — quarters to halves

BURNETT COUNTY—The implementation of two halves of a high school basketball game instead of four quarters was approved as a one-year trial by the WIAA for the 2015-16 season. With the Basketball Coaches Advisory Committee set to vote on extending the switch this week, area coaches offered their insight on the change.

“Overall I am happy with the change — I think playing halves gives more flow to a basketball game,” Rob Scherrer, Webster boys coach, remarked. “With quarters, the last minute of each quarter usually had a team hold the ball for a last shot — I thought it ruined the continuity that we have now with halves.”

In fact, Scherrer hits on a key reason for the trial.

“The idea to move toward halves was in part to address the continued requests to implement a shot clock,” Deb Hauser, WIAA,

explained. “By eliminating the breaks between the 1st and 2nd and 3rd and 4th quarters, there are two less times when the ball might be held at the end of a quarter.”

Webster girls varsity coach Mat Wood agreed with that reasoning.

“I think the halves make the basketball game flow better than it did with quarters,” he observed. “Instead of a team holding the ball for the last second shot during the last minute of each quarter, you only get one planned break — so the players can get into the game.

The change may have had the biggest impact on the coaches rather than the players.

“Initially it was very difficult to switch to halves, the team basically lost two time outs at the quarter breaks, forcing coaches to better utilize our time outs,” Penny Curtin, Grantsburg girls coach pointed out. “However, as the season progressed, I found that I prefer the Grantsburg’s Jordan Knutson

SIREN—Not having its own team for eight years and the move of the high school baseball season from summer to spring are two of the biggest challenges the Siren Dragons face as the team looks to the 2016 season.

“Our biggest challenge is getting numbers back,” head coach Jon Ruud admitted. “We’re just trying to get enough kids out to field a team, get kids excited about baseball and to get better every day.”

And that’s not hyperbole.

Last week’s practice saw 11 kids performing warm ups and throwing drills, and it obviously takes nine to field a team.

“It’s scary because there are four or five freshmen and they are going to start varsity,” the coach pointed out.

Ruud hopes to see a bigger rebound in numbers as the season progresses.

“We had really good numbers five or six years ago in our summer recreation program,” he noted. “Those numbers have dropped — but I hope once we’re on the field, kids will want to join the team.”

Regardless, the team is moving into the season.

“Our stance is it is really exciting to get our younger kids playing baseball again in Siren,” Ruud declared.

Having said that, the coach acknowledges that youth may be a downfall Jon Ruud for the team.

“We’re young and inexperienced but we’re going to try and play the game the right way —and we’re going to have a lot of fun doing it,” he added. “It’ll be tough to be competitive but hopefully they are better at the end of the season than they are now.”

A quick glance at Ruud’s roster will reveal that some have already served under his tutelage.

“The neat thing about coaching in a small town is I have these kids in class, I get to coach a lot of them and really get to know them,” he remarked.

“I’m lucky I get to coach some of these kids again — especially the seniors we have on the team.”

He counts himself as lucky to be coaching the sport.

“The kids out for baseball are all great kids and they like the game,” Ruud said.

It may be hard for some to picture Ruud as a baseball coach — after all, he has coached so much basketball, folks could call him “Coach Hoops.”

“I played baseball in college and both Brian (assistant coach Brian Webster) and I have spent a lot of time with the younger kids in the baseball program,” he explained. “It’s just time to get the sport going again.”

The Dragons, who begin their season April 11 (weather permitting), will play their home games at the Siren Ball Field.

halves — it gives a little extra time and helps the flow of the game.”

Wood agreed.

“I enjoyed many aspects of the halves, however it did take a little bit of time to get used to coaching with them, like when to use timeouts, when to sub, and how to sub,” the coach noted. “With only one break and the extra four minutes, teams needed to be deeper and in better shape and needed to be able to perform when fatigued.”

Fellow coach Scherrer shares that point of view.

“Two half basketball creates more game time decisions for coaches and an opportunity for coaching to have an impact on the game,” he said. “However, it puts an extra pressure on small schools to have a large enough varsity roster to handle foul trouble early in the first half.”

Mike Amundson, Grantsburg Athletic Director, agreed.

“As the season went on and the coaches and players became more accustom to the flow of the game and the need for earlier use of the bench players — the results were greater levels of play throughout the entire game.”

Getting more kids into the game was a big reason for the one-year trial.

“Those opposed feel that teams with small numbers are put in a tough spot to play a full 18 -minute half,” Hauser reported. “I believe, with time, we will see more kids out for basketball at the varsity level as more kids will get the chance to play.

Helping the flow of the game was another big reason for the trial.

“As far as

the flow of the game and game management I believe it was a success and served it’s purpose,” Amundson opined. “We were fortunate enough to have quality players to step in off of the bench — limited numbers could have had a greater impact in the quality of play.”

Hauser said she has heard comments on both sides of the argument.

“Those in favor of playing in halves like that more players are needed and that the flow of the game seems to be much better without the breaks between quarters,” she said.

Some coaches barely gave the change much thought.

“To be honest with you, the adjustment wasn’t what most maybe think,” Nick Hallberg, Grantsburg boys coach, indicated. “I didn’t feel like it impacted a whole lot, other than using an extra timeout somewhere around the 10-minute mark to regroup or give our guys a break.”

Overall, the coaches seem to approve of the switch but that may change with Wednesday’s vote.

“I hope the WIAA can pick one format and stick with it so we as coaches can plan around it,” Wood commented.

Hallberg is on the same page.

“I personally like the switch and hope they continue with this format,” he remarked.

But that decision may not be so cutand-dry.

“I have heard that universities are going back to quarters,” Curtin voiced.

“This could throw an interesting wrench back into the issue.”

Beekeepers meet in Siren

Bronx is a one-year-old German Shepard mix. He’s a big boy with lots of energy, but behaved better than I expected when I was up close and personal with him in his kennel. Bronx kept wanting to jump up on me, but was gentle about it.

He knows the sit command and seems like he would be pretty easy to train.

While I was there, Bronx one of our volu nteers took Bronx out for a walk. While he was a little too eager at the starting gate (going out the door), she said he calmed down and Cadbury walked well on his leash.

Bronx also loves to play fetch. He gets the ball back to you in the general area, but needs a little work on releasing the ball directly to you. Bronx is a happy boy, but he’d be much happier in a furever home.

Cadbury is a little black kitten that seems like an old soul in a young body. During my visit with her, she was calm, cool, and relaxed. Cadbury loved to be held and snuggled. She didn’t care for the antics of little Calvin (a wee orange and white tabby kitten) when they were both let loose in the office. Although they both seemed about the same age, Calvin was a little spitfire, while Cadbury just wanted to observe and be left alone. Cadbury gave a little warning hiss when Calvin looked like he was ready to pounce, and Calvin stopped in his tracks. Before I left, they seemed to be getting more used to each other. They were really fun to watch.

I think, with more time together, they’d become fast friends.

Good news! Mistletoe, the senior cat that we featured before has been adopted. This girl came to use with severe burns on the bottom of her paws. With her age and her medical issues, we weren’t quite sure she’d survive. Mistletoe was resilient and had such a sweet disposition. You’d never know she was suffering as she played happy paws on your lap. Fingers crossed that Mistletoe and the other cat in the household get along! It may take a little time.

SIREN— This year’s overwinter bees produced sounds of happiness, disappointment and hope to carry on at the Northland Beekeepers club in their first meeting of the year Thursday night.

With the coming of spring, the news from local hives reported more than half of the club members experienced heavy colony losses, even after a fairly mild winter. One club member said one of his hives just “vanished” in January. Bees vacating a hive in the dead of winter is a troubling sign.

But even with apiary mysteries, club members new and old are gearing up for another round for this honey season.

The bees are already bringing in pussy willow pollen.

And new package bees and equipment are on order, with local retailers getting into the business.

The Burnett Dairy Cooperative in Alpha is selling only bee supplies. But Blain’s Farm and Fleet in Rice Lake is selling actual bees and the

supplies. This year a 3-pound package of bees with a queen was $129.99.

Longtime beekeeper and club member Paul Ekblad, 87, said when he started beekeeping during the Truman Administration in 1946 a package of bees was $5.

The worries over deadly varroa mites and Colony Collapse Disorder, which are known to devastate bee colonies, were raised. And thus the debate of using chemical treatment versus organic practices to combat these adversaries was debated.

The federal government is also concerned over the loss of bees. “Honey bee pollination alone adds more than $15 billion in value to agricultural crops each year in the United States,” said President Obama in an executive memorandum.

“Scientists believe that bee losses are likely caused by a combination of stressors, including poor bee nutrition, loss of forage lands, parasites, pathogens, lack of genetic diversity, and exposure to pes-

A federal Pollinator Health Task Force has been developed to determine the loss of bees. The honey bee is nature’s greatest pollinator and friend to agriculture.

Quick tips to help homeowners avoid potential bear conflicts MADISON – As bears throughout Wisconsin have begun to emerge from their dens, homeowners are encouraged to take precautions to avoid potential conflicts with hungry bears.

Black bears normally avoid contact with people. But, when food sources are available, bears can quickly learn to associate humans with food.

“Many of these conflicts occur as a result of some type of attractant, especially bird feeders, garbage cans, grills, uncontained compost or pet food left outside and accessible” said Wisconsin Depart-

ment of Natural Resources Wildlife Damage Specialist Brad Koele.

It is especially important to remove these attractants during the spring, when bears are emerging from dens and looking to restore depleted energy reserves when natural foods are limited, says Koele.

It is illegal to intentionally feed bears in Wisconsin, but it is also important for homeowners to make sure they do not unintentionally feed bears via a food source near their home.

If a bear finds food such as bird feed or garbage near

your home, it will likely return.

Visits may stop when food is no longer available.

Bears will periodically check sites where food was once available, so it may take several days to weeks before a bear will quit visiting a site once the food source has been removed.

“If a bear is near your home, wave your arms and make noise to scare it away.

“Back away slowly and seek a safe location where you can wait for the bear to leave.

“When scaring a bear away, make sure it has a clear escape route. Never corner a

bear,” said Koele. “If you encounter a bear while in the woods, stay calm and do not approach the bear.

“Never approach a sow with cubs, and do not attempt to break-up a fight between your pet and a bear,” he adds.

The DNR partners with U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services to respond to approximately 800 bear-related complaints reported in Wisconsin each year.

Homeowners who are unable to resolve a conflict with a bear should contact the USDA Wildlife Services tollfree line at 1-800-228-1368.

WILDSIDE St. Croix River Visitor Center opens April 9 ST. CROIX FALLS—Beginning on Saturday, April 9, 2016, the St. Croix River Visitor Center of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

The St. Croix River Visitor Center is located at 401 North Hamilton St., St. Croix Falls. It features exhibits on the river’s natural environment and a bookstore.

One feature is an 18-minute film “The St. Croix: A Northwoods Journey.”

The center includes a 500-gallon freshwater aquarium and a floor map that shows the river from north of Grantsburg to its confluence with the Mississippi.

The St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, a unit of the National Park System, was established by the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act in 1968.It is one of a group of eight rivers in the country which first received this recognition.

For more than 200 miles, the St. Croix River and its tributary, the Namekagon, flow through some of the most scenic

and least developed country in the Upper Midwest.

Registration Open for “Paddle with a Ranger” Programs

‘Paddle with a Ranger’ ST. CROIX FALLS—Find Your Park along the St. Croix and Namekagon rivers in 2016 by joining a “Paddle with a Ranger” program. Registration for these unique experiences is open now.

The programs are offered by the National Park Service (NPS) and the St. Croix River Association (SCRA).

Their goal is to help people explore the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway by kayak.

Composed of the St. Croix and Namekagon rivers, the Riverway is a national park and one of America’s first wild and scenic rivers.

This year’s paddles are also a great opportunity to celebrate the NPS centennial and participate in the Centen-

nial Paddle Challenge, sponsored by the SCRA. Can you paddle 200 Riverway miles – two for every year of the NPS - in 2016? Go to: https://www.stcroixriverassociation.org/centennial/ to learn more.

Eight “Paddle with a Ranger” programs will be offered in 2016, with topics ranging from Ojibwe connections to the St. Croix to the summer solstice.

A 30-minute paddling instruction and safety session will occur prior to departure and must be attended by all participants. A fee is charged.

Mary Ott Sjoberg, 76, of Mora, MN, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2016 at her home.

A service was held Friday. April 1, at Dresser-Methven Funeral Home in Mora, officiated by Marv Ott. Mary Ellen Ott Sjoberg was born Nov. 28, 1939 to Emmert and Anna (Nath) Ott in Hartley, IA. She was the second oldest of seven children. Mary graduated from Everly High School in 1957, where she was a star basketball player. In 1960, she graduated from Methodist Hospital Nursing School in Sioux City, IA, then started her 47-year nursing career at the University of Minnesota Hospital.

In 1964, Mary married Alan Sjoberg. They had four children and also raised three special nieces/nephew when Mary’s sister, Margaret Brown, passed away in 1986.

In 1970, Al and Mary moved their family to Mora.

There she continued her passion of caring for others at Mora Hospital and Clinic until she retired in 2005.

Mary was a wonderful nurse. She loved her patients and her fellow heath care workers. She worked with Dr. Brettingen for 25-plus wonderful years. They were a great team and became good friends. She appreciated him as a great doctor and person.

Mary had many passions in life! She attended school activities with her children and grandchildren. She loved to golf with her family and friends, and was very good at it. She had two hole-in-ones and won three club championships.

Mary loved spending time with her family and friends, as well as gardening, reading, and traveling with her “Magnificent 7!”

Mary is survived by her husband, Alan; her children: Judy (Matt) Deis and their children Sarah, Stephanie and Danny of Plymouth MN; Michael (Corinne) Sjoberg and their son Logan and Corinne’s daughter Jana (Cody) Garmaker of Mora; Ann (Dan) Tetnowski and their children Nikki (son Caiden) and Aaron, of Mora MN. She is survived by grand-daughter Jami Ann Wallgren (Jesse Nelson) of Brainerd, MN; Teri (Rob) Heggernes and their son Joshua of Mora; Jerry (Laura) Brown and their son Lane of Aberdeen, SD; Kari (Darwin) Tetnowski and their sons Jacob and Zachary of Mora; She is also survived by brothers: Merle (Mary) of Portland, OR and their children Mark and Michelle; Marvin (Mary) of Grand Rapids, MN and their children Rebekka and Kevin; Melvin (Linda) of Leland, SC and their children Jimmy, Danny, and Julie; Mitch of Spencer, IA. Mary also survived by brother Maynard’s children: Glen, Randy, and Shane Ott, and Denise (Ott) Everman.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Gayle Sjoberg; her sister, Margaret Brown; her brother, Maynard Ott; niece Krista Ott; nephew Frank Sgambato; sister/brother-in-law Vera and Delbert Wicklund, their son Glen Wicklund; cousins Sandy and Elizabeth May. Mary’s daily prayer: “Dear God, please keep all my loved ones safe, happy, healthy, strong and wise. Thank you for my blessings!”

Nancy Bottke Hvambsal M Morten, 77, died Friday, April 11, 2016 at her Trade Lake home w with her family by her side.

A celebration of life will be h held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 223 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church iin Frederic. Visitation will be 44-7 p.m. Friday at the church a and one hour prior to the serv vice. Lunch will follow.

Nancy was born Oct. 26, 1938 in Morristown, MN to Edward and Elsie Bottke. She grew up on a small farm with four brothers and one sister. In 1959, she graduated from St. Barnabas Nursing School in Minneapolis, which started a 50-year career in nursing and the health care field. She also held a bachelor’s degree in Patient Care Administration from the University of Minnesota.

During her career, Nancy held a variety of positions including Staff Nurse, Director of Nursing, Teacher and Hospice Nurse. In her off time, Nancy continued to promote health care programs by volunteering as a CPR instructor and working with Frederic’s Town and Country Ambulance Service.

While her career was a constant in her life, family, friends and having fun were her passion. Nancy loved to golf, fish, bowl, play cards, craft, garden and host gatherings. She was always up for a new adventure.

She nurtured this adventurous spirit and passed it on to her children and grandchildren. It is something we celebrate most about her life.

Nancy was preceded in death by her first husband, Burns Erling “Bumps” Hvambsal, whom she married on Oct. 31, 1959 and four children were born.

Nancy is survived by her second husband, Jim Morten; siblings, Gladys (Don) Longpre, Wayne (Shirley) Bottke, Marvin Bottke (Carole); children, Blake (Cathy) Hvambsal, Blaine (Nancy) Hvambsal, Beth (Dan) Rosema and Brenda Hvambsal-Lake (Dave Lake); seven grandchildren; three step-children, Barry Morten, Danette Olsen, and Rene’ Morten; twelve step-grandchildren; many cousins, nieces and nephews, and countless friends.

The family prefers memorials to organizations special to Nancy, including Pilgrim Lutheran Church, the Frederic Lioness Club, Maple Grove Cemetery and Regional Hospice Services.

Collene Nelson, 74, of Grantsb burg, passed away Thursday M March 31, 2016 at the Grace E Edgewood Assisted Living in A Altoona, WI. The funeral service was held M Monday, April 4, 2016 at Grace B Baptist Church in Grantsburg, w with Pastor David W. Frazer o officiating. Interment was at W Wood River Baptist Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jay Foust, Donald Strabel, Jerry Olson, Paul Nelson, Paul Uhren, John Perkins and John Oxley. Honorary pallbearers were Armand Luedtke and Dean Nelson.

Collene was born on Oct. 26, 1941 in St. Paul, MN to Roland and Uva (Blake) Amey.

Collene served as a caregiver for most of her life, both in her own home and as a CNA for many years at Burnett Medical Center. Collene and her husband, Laurence, raised seven children on their family farm.

Collene always had a strong faith in God, which she instilled in all her children. She enjoyed art, painting, coloring and spending quality time with her family.

Collene will be remembered for her tender heart and her ability to express unconditional love towards all of her children and grandchildren.

Adelade Leanore Johnson, 93, of Danbury, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2016 at Burnett Medical Continuing Care Center in Grantsburg.

A memorial service honoring Adelade’s life was held Monday, April 4, 2016 at Yellow Lake Lutheran Church in Danbury, with Pastor Myron Carlson officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner.

Adelade was born on June 20, 1922 to Arthur and Lily (Israel) Kringle in Webster.

On April 24, 1942 Adelade was united in marriage to George Johnson in Winthrop Harbor, IL. Adelade enjoyed cooking, gardening, and building rock gardens, but above all else, Adelade liked spending time with her family, whom she loved dearly.

Adelade is survived by her devoted husband of 73 years, George Johnson; children, Terry (Diane) Johnson, Richard Johnson, Debbie (Chuck) Mahlen and Cindy (Darrell) Connors; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Preceding Adelade in death were brothers Arleigh, Allen, Lawrence and Laverne Kringle; and grandson, Billy Connors.

Angela ‘Angie’ Chelmo Angela Jean “Angie” Chelmo, 50, of Frederic, passed away at her home on Thursday, March 31, 2016.

A memorial service honoring the life of Angie Chelmo will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at Siren United Methodist Church, with Pastor Eddie Crise officiating. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. at the church. A fellowship luncheon will follow the service.

Angela was born Sept. 7, 1965, in Red Wing, MN, a daughter of Ralph and Norma (Marrow) Kirchner. She was a 1984 graduate of Ellsworth, WI, High School. Angie completed training to become a registered nurse, then moved with her parents to Webster shortly after graduation.

On Nov. 2, 1985, Angie was united in marriage to Gordon Lee “Gordy” Chelmo at Siren United Methodist Church.

Angie was employed as a nurse at Capeside Cove Good Samaritan Center in Siren and at Frederic Care Center until 2001. A few years later, she became a staff member of Siren United Methodist Church, serving as the church secretary for six years.

Angie was a talented artist who loved crafting, including cross-stitching, sewing, and quilting, as well as water color painting, making doll houses, and floral arranging. She was also musically inclined and took great delight playing the piano and accordion.

An incredibly amazing and remarkable person, Angie was hard-working and strong-willed, loving, kind, caring, and giving. Family and friends reveled at Angie’s great skills in the kitchen, as she was an amazing cook. She also received a great deal of pleasure from her Solomon Island Eclectus Parrot named Ruby, and her Basset Hound named Webster.

She is survived by her husband, Gordy; their sons, John and Sonny Chelmo; a sister, Susie (Lee) Robbins; nieces, nephews and their spouses; Jamie (Angie) Kirchner, Jenny (Randy) Hanson, Steve Stoetzel, Sean (Kristin) Robbins, and Connor Robbins; as well as many great nieces and great nephews. Angie is also survived by her “extended family” Dave McConnell, Gail and Steve Ward, and Mary and William Yambrick.

Angie is preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Norma Kirchner; and her brother, Joseph Kirchner.

Our conďŹ dence is in God How many of you voted yesterday? Did your candidates win? Many of you are excited and hopeful and many are discouraged with the results. Some like me are troubled with the whole political process. It is good to be reminded of a few facts.

First, God is in control.

He establishes governing authorities. We need to do our part as good citizens and vote but ultimately God is in control. Romans 13:1 â&#x20AC;&#x2DC; Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities for there is no author-

ity except that which God has established.

The authorities that exist have been established by God.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; We may wonder why God allows certain people to lead ( a topic for another day) but bottom line, God is still in control.

Second, our confidence is not in a candidate, a party, or the political system but in God. Psalm 20:7 â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.â&#x20AC;? And Psalm 118:9 â&#x20AC;&#x153;It
