SIREN—Dr. Kevin Shetler has been named as the Superintendent of the Siren School District. He was offered and accepted a two-year contract last week. Dr. Shetler was hired as the interim District Administrator in August of 2015 for the 2015-16 school year.

Voter Clinic slated

GRANTSBURG–A Voter Clinic will be held next Tuesday in Grantsburg to help Burnett and Polk County residents get ready to vote in the spring election and presidential primary on April 5, and the Nov. 8 presidential election.

The Voter Clinic will be held from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 15 at Crex Conventions (part of T-Dawgs) in the Gateway Shopping Center on St. Hwy. 70 E. in Grantsburg. The event is free. Refreshments will be served.

GRANTSBURG —Why dive on the Titanic or climb Mount Everest?

The simple answer?

Because they are there.

That may or may not have been the case when Grantsburg’s Karl Anderson ventured to Devil’s Lake in Pine City, MN last weekend.

At issue is the Legend of the Lost Train in Devils Lake, a train which supposedly went off the tracks and into Devils Lake in the 1870s.

Details are sketchy, to say the least.

“There was no newspaper in Pine City at the time so there is no documentation of it happening or not happening,” Anderson re-

vealed. “We figure that no one was hurt or killed because that would have been documented somehow.”

Even though the legend goes back decades, Anderson’s interest started 15 years ago.

“We moved an Army tank from Pine City to Rush City for the historical society,” he explained.

That led to him hearing of the legend and it piqued his interest.

Stories abound about the legend “Any one who is an old-timer in Pine City brings it up,” Anderson admits.

“There are two property owners on that lake — one is adamant the train was removed after it happened and tells us we’re wasting our time, but the other person is all excited.”

That in itself is cause enough for Anderson to keep looking.

BURNETT COUNTY—By all accounts, Burnett County residents had an “easy” winter. But the price for that easiness is an earlier, thus longer, fire season which will keep homeowners and forest rangers alike, on their toes.

“We’re just finishing an El Nino winter,” Jay Riewestahl, a forest ranger with the DNR, observed. “That means less snow and an early spring.”

That might be well and good for anyone ready for winter to be over but it does cause other concerns.

“Records of past El Nino winters have shown to yield about a 20 percent increase in fires because of the longer fire season,” he continued.

No life-threatening injuries occured in this three-vehicle accident Friday north of Webster.

Last snow catches drivers off-guard SIREN—Mother Nature played out one final cruel act of the winter of 201516 Friday morning and afternoon when a couple of inches of wet, heavy snow blanketed portions of Burnett County, causing several spin-outs, leaving a number of vehicles in the ditch and a few accidents.

“People let their guard down,” Sheriff Ron Wilhelm said of Friday’s chaos.

“Because we’ve had warmer weather, when the first snow hit the roads, it turned it to ice and the snow which kept falling accumulated on top of it and we got a nice slush out of it — that made for some treacherous roads.”

Perhaps the worst accident of the day occurred on Highway 35 north of Webster near Co. Road U. While there were

injuries, fortunately there were no fatalities.

Arlene Lenz of Danbury was northbound on Highway 35 while her vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a vehicle driven by Mary Smith, also of Danbury and the Smith vehicle came to rest in the ditch on the west side of the road.

After the crash, the Lenz vehicle spun on the road and a vehicle following the Lenz vehicle, driven by Joshua J. Staudt, West Des Moines, Iowa, struck the Lenz vehicle. The Lenz vehicle came to a stop in the road while the Staudt vehicle ended up in the east ditch.

Smith and Lenz suffered non life-threatening injuries.

GRANTSBURG—She’s funny, she’s quirky, she’s homegrown and she’s nationally known. She’s Miki Budge – better known by her stage name, Mary Mack – and she’s coming home to Burnett County for a show on Tuesday, April 5 at the Crex Convention Center (T-Dawgs) in Grantsburg.

The occasion is the second annual Burnett County Tourism Coalition Dinner Gala, a fund-raiser to support the BCTC mission of “growing tourism in Burnett County.”

The Gala evening starts with a cash-bar social hour at 5 p.m., which includes a presentation by BCTC, followed by a three-course dinner at 6 p.m., a drawing for five $150 cash prizes at 7:30 p.m., and The Mary Mack Comedy Show at 7:45 p.m..

Last year’s March BCTC Gala brought business owners together to celebrate the launch of Burnett County’s dedicated tourism website “BurnettCountyFun.com” that showcases what to see, do, dine, shop and play. It touts Burnett County as a year ‘round vacation destination.

This year’s gala is open to the public. Mary Mack is well-known around these parts. Her niece, Emily Gall commented, “Going to her shows was strange at first. Everyone would be laughing at her stories, and I’m sitting there like ‘no, really…that’s what happens at Thanksgiving!’ My aunt taught me that it’s okay to laugh at yourself, to see the humor in the everyday.”

Mary’s forays into humor started early. She attended Webster schools and graduated from Webster High School. In elementary school she recalls how excited she was when the

class got to write their own plays. “Of course, [the teachers] were also tricking us into reading and writing and interacting with others, but we didn’t notice, because we were having so much fun,” she recalled.

In high school, teachers continued to encourage Mary’s creativity even while she was on the track team. “My coaches, Mr. Muus and Mr. Kinziger, were patient and kind enough to let me tell my new, and usuallty awful, jokes to the running team before most practices and meets,” she said. Then she quipped, “Luckily, my jokes have gotten a little better. Or I hope they have anyway. I don’t think anyone would have paid to hear any of those jokes back then.”

Like many youngsters, Mary grew up fishing in the many lakes in the area. “When you’re just sitting there not catching anything, which is mostly the case for me, there’s a lot of time to think about funny things.”

Mary incorporates those “funny things” into her show, tailoring her running monologue to local audiences.

On the national level, Mary Mack has been seen on Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham, NBC’s Last Comic Standing, and playing the co-lead character, Dylan, on Fox’s cartoon Golan the Insatiable, season one.

A mile in my shoes My morning routine was disrupted again last Wednesday.

We typically send the paper to our printer Tuesday night but because of playoff basketball, the final pages don’t get out the door until Wednesday a.m. — that’s where I come in.

Glen and Stacy and Goob handle all the writing and picture-taking Tuesday night. I have the easy part of filling the “holes” we left during production on Tuesday so we’d have somewhere to put the results from Tuesday night.

Of course, part of the “easy” part is getting here at 6 a.m., completing the last of the jigsaw puzzle that is page pagination and getting the last pages loaded to the publication site.

That said, I got the pages Seems to “sent” and after my first hour of work, I headed to the health Me club to do my morning walk — I favor walking outdoors Todd Beckmann yes, but I like to change it up every once in awhile.

Anyway, I’m somewhere into my second mile when it occurs to me how many years I’ve been going for walks — it’s been 16 or 17 years.

I hardly have that figured when the “How far?” question looms in my head.

As faithful readers will attest, I’ve never boasted on my math skills, but as close as I can figure, and this is somewhat of a guesstimate, the distance stands around 17,000-miles.

That’s walking three miles every day for 16 years.

Sure, there are days I haven’t walked at all, but there are also days when I have walked three and a half, four or even five miles — that’s where the whole “guesstimate” concept comes into play.

When I’m on my “morning constitutionals,” I often daydream of where I could end up — especially since I have yet to cover the distance around the planet, I know I’m not in Grantsburg.

One of the closest towns to us, only 15 miles away, is Siren.

Well, I’m not going to walk three or four miles toward Siren and then camp for the night — how ridiculous would that be? Plus, it’d take me a whole work week to get there.

No, distance-walking obviously doesn’t work that way.

But back to where I’d be — let’s see, thanks to Google Earth, I found the distance around Earth is roughly 24,000 miles — leaving me about 7,000 miles short.

Not that walking around the globe has ever been a goal of mine.

Besides, I don’t think it’s physically possible — too much water in the way.

But for the sake of argument, let’s say you could “walk” around the world.

Given that set of parameters, I’d have headed west out of Grantsburg in 2000 and would now be in Islamabad, Pakistan — and I wouldn’t get back to Grantsburg for another six years.

And before I knew it, my time on the treadmill was over.

It’s anyone’s race Welcome to March, let the madness begin!

This will not be a column about the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament. I’d like to talk about the other national tournament that is currently underway, the one that eats up a great deal of time in the news and is just as frustrating as watching the team you chose to win it all lose.

I’m referring to From the the presidential Publisher’s nominating process. Even though Desk candidates have debated for nearly Tom Stangl nine months, the voters have been able to speak with their ballots for just over a month.

A few observations have crossed my mind as I watch, listen or read about the coverage.

If you haven’t picked up on the fact that people are angry about the lack of things getting done, then you clearly haven’t been paying attention.

For at least a decade or longer, elected officials have been more concerned about holding fast to their ideologies than actually governing. It is an easy thing to stick to your guns and convince yourself

that you are right instead of actually working to find the delicate balance that is consensus.

In my limited political career, I quickly learned that I could have the best idea in the world, but if I couldn’t find enough people to go along with the concept, even the best ideas die.

It’s a hard reality to learn, and it is something that I believe has been forgotten by politicians on many levels of government.

It seems to me that some politicians are more concerned with keeping their office than doing what is right for the people that elected them to do the people’s work.

The pent up anger and frustration that people have on both sides of the political spectrum has brought us to this point and explains, I believe, the appeal of Donald Trump, and on the other side of the political spectrum, Bernie Sanders.

A month into the primary process, the established political base of both parties are now shaken by the success of the candidates who are tapping into the anger.

During the nominating process, after the voters have their say, the parties select delegates to the national nominating conventions.

A certain amount of delegates to the conventions on both sides may simply vote for whomever they like and are not accountable for their

actions. The Republicans have “unbound” delegates; the Democrats have “super” delegates.

In my research, seven percent of the Republican delegates are unbound and 25 percent of the Democratic delegates are super delegates.

I cannot determine how many unbound delegates have declared, but on the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton has 457 super delegates, Sanders has 22.

When you take the super delegates out of the equation, Clinton has 595 delegates to Sanders’ 405.

But if you believe the media coverage, Sanders has all but lost. It is apparent that the establishment is behind Clinton.

Trump has about one fourth of the delegates he will need to get the Republican nomination.

I believe it is still a wide open race and caution anyone from being complacent. For what it’s worth, I believe the nominees will serve us all better if they seek to find consensus and actually work to solve the very real problems our nation is facing.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Proud to live in Burnett County To the Editor: I was recently involved in the “Celebrate Wisconsin Snowmobiling” event held in Siren. All of our elected officials were invited, along with key people from the Wisconsin DNR, Wisconsin Tourism Department, and local governmental agencies that are involved in snowmobile trails and riding.

Our guests were treated to a banquet, breakfast, snowmobile ride, and lunch.

We also had a Snow Show! How could this happen? The Siren Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Commission took the lead.

The Lodge at Crooked Lake worked with us to provide meeting space and trade show space, as well as lodging.

The Main Store, Four Star Sports, Nextgen Powersports and Hayward Powersports provided snowmobiles for our guests at no charge. St. Croix Casino – Danbury provided lunch for our guests at no charge.

Several local businesses made donations to enhance the experience for our legislators and other guests. Members

of every club in Burnett County Snow Trails Association donated countless hours of planning, and 40 people to help guide our guests on the snowmobile ride.

The snowmobile and ATV clubs in this county are amazing! The local newspapers covered our event beautifully, in advance and as a followup. The Kids Pro Ice racers came and showed us what their Minnesota State Championship races looked like – right on Crooked Lake!

I hope everyone has a reason to be proud to live here. I am just amazed at all the people that worked so hard to get these VIP guests to visit our county and provide an outstanding experience for them!

Thanks to the good people of this entire county, they came, they learned, they saw, and they loved it here!

Terrorism To the Editor: Federal protection? For the last 15

years no leader, no matter which party, has protected us, as our Constitution requires. Terrorists kill innocents like us to create fear in us.

Do terrorists have USA rights? Why? Terrorists live and die by no rules.

Doesn’t anti-terrorism require no rules also?

I believe it is now time to fight terrorists with their rules: none with our new rules of none. Uniformed armies against terrorists is dumb. Every time we have a mass murder by USA citizen traitors or terrorists, guns and ammo sales increase.

Americans have determined we need to defend ourselves at the local level, until our new anti-terrorism group comes into existence by organization or self-survival.

What can we do now? We need to create increased family social pressure now. We need a USA Web site called “Hall of Shame.” First inductees are the three San Bernardino terrorist/ traitors, Syed Rizwan Farook, Tashfeen Malik and Enrique Marquez, a friend of Farook. Their names, pictures with mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters.

Spring is on the way. That little snow we got Friday just made things look clean and fresh for a couple of days.

There was a small but lively group for dime bingo. We play at 12:30 p.m. every Wednesday. Come and join the fun. No need to call, just drop in.

There were six for dominoes with Millie the winner. Three came to play pool, Harry and Ken were tied for winners.

They play at 1 p.m. every Thursday.

Wii bowling was fun and exciting as usual. Pat had high individual game with a 267 and high individual series at 502. The Vikings had high team game at 829, and The Happy Strikers and Vikings tied for high team series at 1564.

The 200 club included Bill B. 216 and 225, Deanna 236, LaJuana 205, Judy 232, Fred 225, Vickie 202. I think we have some pros here. Bill B. picked up the 2-5-

7- split and LaJuana the 5-10.

Birthday wishes to Joanne Rachner, Lilly Gleason and all others celebrating their special day in March.

CLINIC: Easing voters into new cycle CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

• To help people learn about the new Wisconsin Voter ID law.

• To help Burnett County residents register to vote.

• To allow voters to try out a voting kiosk, and, • To allow voters to ask questions of the county and village clerks who oversee the elections.

Burnett County Clerk Wanda Hinrichs and Village of Grantsburg Clerk Jennifer Zeiler will be registering voters who reside in Burnett County and village respectively, and will answer questions from the public.

A voting kiosk will be available for voters who would like to try it, as well as sample paper ballots for the April 5 election.

League of Women Voters returns to Burnett County The newly re-formed League of Women Voters Upper St. Croix Valley is sponsoring the event.

Marilyn Chesnik, Grantsburg is chair of the Polk/Burnett counties LWV chapter.

She extended a special welcome to all first-time voters, including those

League of Women Voters sponsoring 2 clinics “It is also a good time to learn more about the League of Women Voters,” she added. “It was formed in 1920 by suffragettes who helped secure for women the right to vote in the U. \S. “The League is happy to be back and active in Burnett and Polk counties,” Chesnik said. “There was a League for many years in the Siren and Webster area, but it disbanded in the 1980s.

“With the new voter ID law in Wisconsin and greater use of voting kiosks, we think this event is very important, whether you are a first-timer or a life-long voter. By the way, men are welcome to join,” she said.

Aother voter clinic will be held later in Polk County.

the Wisconsin Association of School Boards in December to assist the board in the search for a full time District Administrator starting on July 1, 2016.

“The District Administrator position was posted statewide and nationally, focus groups were conducted with groups of support staff, teachers, administrators and the community to listen and gain valuable information on the strengths, needs, and direction of the district,” Moore said in a prepared press release.

“In addition, people were asked for the characteristics they were looking for in the next educational leader of the Siren School District. An online survey was conducted to gain information on the preferred leadership style and ranking priorities of the district.”

That search culminated with a school board meeting last week to review the eight completed applications for the position, review the executive summary report from the focus groups as well as the survey results.

“The input from the focus groups and the online surveys helped us a lot,” Moore said in a phone interview. “But

SPRING: Longer ďŹ re season price to pay for ‘easy’ winter CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

Couple that with the loss of the lookout towers, it could be a long season for ďŹ reďŹ ghters. “It’s the ďŹ rst year since the 1930s we will not have anyone up in our ďŹ re towers,â€? Riewestahl stated. “We are hoping for good cooperation from the public — if someone sees smoke, we are hoping they’ll call us.â€?

But there are plans to supplement the ďŹ re season with aircraft. “We are increasing our air patrol to offset the fact that we will no longer have people in our towers,â€? he continued. “I’m not certain at this point but it wouldn’t surprise me to see single engine air tankers (SEAT) aircraft at Siren this spring.â€?

The reason for the uncertainty is the switch the DNR made, starting this season, from contracted ďŹ re suppression to call-when-needed ďŹ re suppression. “When it was contracted, we’d tell them a start-date, and the planes wouldn’t be here until that date,â€?

Riewestahl explained. “With the call-when-needed service, we are hoping for better, more timely service.�

With continuing above-average temperatures he cautioned homeowners to double-check burn piles in order to avoid what are considered ‘hold-over’ ďŹ res; that is, ďŹ res which were burned previously, but not all the fuel was consumed and could re-ignite. “We are also still experiencing cool nights so homeowners who heat with wood need to be extra careful about where they dump their ashes,â€? he reminded. “I know it sounds silly to say but don’t dump ashes on grass

or leaves.�

Not that he encourages burning, but Riewestahl said if people do burn, they need to remember four simple rules. “Always be present at the ďŹ re, make sure your garden hose reaches your burn pile, make sure the ďŹ re is out before you leave and never burn on windy days,â€? he noted.

He said the DNR encourages residents not to burn leaves but to compost leaves instead. “Forty percent of the ďŹ res we have each spring start from people burning leaves and yard-waste debris and it gets away from them,â€? Riewestahl remarked. “We want to see if we can lower that percentage.â€?

To avoid accidental ďŹ res, he suggests for a six-foot wide, six-foot high burn pile, on dirt or other non-ammable surface, residents create a ďŹ re break — a 10-foot break which is clear of leaves and other debris.

Burning permits

Basically the southwest portion of the county is relatively snow-free while the northern and eastern parts of the county have roughly 60 percent of its snow coverage remaining.

Riewestahl said it’s a pretty easy equation to ďŹ gure whether or not you need a burning permit. “If your ground is brown, you need a permit — if it’s white with snow, you don’t,â€? he pointed out.

As an alternative option, he asks people to check the DNR website or to call their local ranger station to ďŹ nd out if burning is permitted that day. “Conditions can change quickly so the best bet would be to check daily,â€?

he advised.

For example, the permit itself instructs people not to burn if the wind speed is over eight miles-an-hour.

Transitioning into spring

“You can ‘Never say never,’ but I think we’re on the downward side of winter,� UW-Extension Agricultural Agent Kevin Schoessow pointed out. “That said, there always seems to be ‘big weather’ around basketball tournament time.�

He said the winter of 2015-16 had average or slightly below average, depending on where you live.

That may or may not be a good thing. “In farming, timing is everything,â€? Schoessow continued. “Anytime moisture falls it’s a good thing but if the snow leaves in the ďŹ rst or second week in March, like it looks like it will, there’s a greater chance for any rain to soak into the ground.â€?

Of course, there’s frost to deal with too. “If the snow goes, the frost will follow and that lends itself to the land absorbing moisture,� he added.

Regardless, area farmers are still looking at a minimum of a month to six week before they can get in the ďŹ elds. “The farmers are still beholden to Mother Nature when it comes to doing any soil management with equipment — most ďŹ elds won’t support that weight until mid-to-late April,â€?

Schoessow explained. “A ‘best practice’ might be to anticipate an early start and prepare your equipment so it is ready to go when the weather breaks.�

Marley is a one year-old Labrador Retriever mix who came to the shelter as a stray. This fellow is 63 pounds of energy and unconditional love. He shows no favoritism to anyone in particular at the shelter.

Because Marley is an active dog, I decided my ďŹ rst meeting with him would be through the upper gate (instead of going directly into his kennel). He was beyond excited to see me. If I hesitated petting him, even for a second, he would slide his head under my hand to remind me why I was there and what my duties were.

Marley loves playing fetch, although he wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t release the ball unless you have another one ready to throw. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll tease you with it by getting just so close to you at full speed, but not close enough or slow enough for you to be able

to grab the ball from his mouth.

Marley sits on command and we think, with patience and training, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be a quick learner with anything else you want to teach him. He also appears to have some hunting instinct in him as his nose to the ground, like he is on a mission, whenever he goes on a walk.

Mistletoe is a little tuxedo cat that has been featured before but, unfortu-

nately, she is still waiting for that special someone to come forward and adopt her. This girl is a senior and had a pretty tough life so far (what little we know about it). She was rescued and brought to our shelter with severe burns on the bottom of her paws.

We are unsure of exactly what happened, but it looked like it could be some sort of chemical burns. Mistletoe was in rough shape but, through it all, she kept her sweet disposition. I call her a little â&#x20AC;&#x153;butterballâ&#x20AC;? because she is as big around as she is long - but petite.

Due to Mistletoeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s age, not to mention she is priceless, we are waiving the adoption fee. All we ask is that she has the best home possible indoors, with unlimited TLC.

Wisconsin’s presidential primary April 5

MADISON—On April 5, Wisconsin voters will have a say in who sits in the White House come next January.

According to the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board (GAB), on Tuesday, April 5, Wisconsin electors will have the opportunity to express their preference for a presidential candidate, during the spring election for judicial and other local, non-partisan candidates.

In the Presidential Preference Primary, an elector may vote on the ballot of only one political party.

In addition, the elector may choose to vote by one of the following methods:

• Vote for one of the persons whose names are printed on the ballot; • Vote for an uninstructed delegation from Wisconsin to the national convention of the party; • Write in the name of another person to become the presidential candidate of the party.

12 Republicans, 3 Democratic candidates on ballot Back in January, Wisconsin’s Presidential Preference Selection Committee selected three Democrats and 12 Republicans who will appear as candidates on the ballot for the Presidential Prefer-

ence Vote.

The committee, which has convened every four years since 1968, met in the State Capitol and approved the candidates from lists submitted by representatives of the two political parties permitted by statute to participate in the presidential primary.

The committee has the sole discretion to determine those individuals whose candidacies are generally recognized or advocated in the national news media for placement on Wisconsin’s presidential primary ballot.

The candidates whose names will appear on the Republican party ballot

include Jeb Bush, Ben Carson, Chris Christie, Ted Cruz, Carly Fiorina, Jim Gilmore, Mike Huckabee, John Kasich, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Rick Santorum and Donald Trump.

Names on the Democratic party ballot include Hillary Clinton, Martin O’Malley and Bernie Sanders.

“Wisconsin’s primary ballot was set back in January,” Reid Magney, GAB’s public information officer, reported. “If any of those candidates drop out of the race nationally, their names remain on the ballot in Wisconsin.”

Best fudge balls ever I’ve been working on this recipe since my mother and I were in a fudge shop in Madison.

We happened to be there just after they had finished rolling the fudge on the granite slab.

Who can turn down warm fudge that melts in your mouth—it was heavenly.

We each walked out with 3 pounds of fudge and some new ideas for Valentine’s Day. The fudge prompted these brownie fudge truffles.

They are similar to cake balls, but are brownies rolled into balls and dipped in milk chocolate, then dusted with pow-

dered sugar or candy sprinkles. These are pretty and fun to make.

They are not big enough to write on, but that’s okay. If you make these for someone, they will know you love them and that’s enough!

Brownie fudge balls

1 Box brownie mix, prepared according to directions, but under baked by 5-7 minutes.

Brownies will be soft in the center.

1 ½ pounds of milk chocolate chips, about 3 cups.

Powdered sugar or tiny colored sprinkles, red, pink and white.

Bake and cool the brownies, then crumble the entire pan of brownies and roll brownies into 1 inch balls and place on parchment paper.

In a saucepan over medium heat, bring 1 cup of water to a boil.

Place a large heatsafe bowl over the simmering water and melt Wild Chow the milk chocolate.

When melted, remove Lisa Erickson from heat and discard water.

Dip one brownie ball placed on a fork into the chocolate, rolling the ball around, coating it evenly.

Set on parchment and decorate with colored sprinkles while the chocolate is still warm or roll in powdered sugar after balls cool. Repeat. Makes about 30.

Webster hosts famine event WEBSTER—Chaperones and youth from St John the Baptist Catholic Church participated in a “30 Hour Famine” – style event on Friday, Feb. 26 to Saturday, Feb. 27.

Realizing the great need in our own back yards, we geared our efforts to benefit the Connections Center for Burnett County right here in Webster.

All participants were asked to eat their Friday noon lunch as usual, and report to St. John’s church at 6 p.m. Fruit and vitamin juices were served throughout the evening and during the day on Saturday. Information, art, music, scripture and games were used to share awareness with the teens about the scope of world and local hunger issues.

Once we were together Friday after 6 p.m. at St. John’s, and

during the 23-plus hours which followed, no solid food was served or consumed. The teens were super about getting into the spirit of the event, exercising willpower, and encouraging one another when hunger pains made themselves felt.

We went shopping as teams for “Groceries on a Budget” — which were then part of the mound of food donated to Connections; designed posters highlighting statistics and goals for alleviating hunger; canvassed several neighborhoods in Webster for contributions; delivered the items to and assisted personnel at Connections in sorting the non-perishable food items collected; helped to clean several areas of this all important resource facility for our area.

Ken Hakoda, director of the group and chair of the Department of Music at Kansas Wesleyan, is bringing these talented singers to his former high school where he was a foreign exchange student from Japan from 1989–92, his sophomore through senior years.

Hakoda began playing saxophone at the encouragement of music teacher Stan Marczak, who ran a very large music program for the small school.

Marczak inspired him to pursue music, and Hakoda has said he would not be a music teacher today without Marczak.

Summer Acting Camps ST. CROIX FALLS–Festival Theatre has announced Creativity Camps for summer 2016. These week-long day camps will be held throughout the area.

The camp dates and locations are: July 11-15 at Clear Lake Community Center; July 18-22 at St. Croix Falls Middle School; Aug. 1-5 at St. Croix Falls Middle School; Aug. 8-12 at Grantsburg Public Library; Aug. 15-19 at Frederic Elementary School.

Creativity Camp empowers young creators to express themselves through their art and gain self-confidence in the creative process. Each student is challenged to let imagination run wild in the week-long art exploration. Creativity Campers will work in four artistic disciplines each day: visual art, drama, literary arts, and creative movement.

Featuring teaching artists from around the country who perform in Festival Theatre’s summer repertory, the camps emphasize process-based learning and personal satisfaction with one’s own work.

“We believe learning through the arts develops individuals that are team players, innovative thinkers, multi-versed interpreters, and compassionate,

tolerant members of society,” states Seth Kaltwasser, Festival Theatre actor.

Creativity Camp for ages 5-12 is held 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

For youth ages 12 and up, Festival Theatre is offering two, week-long “Youth Acting Intensives.”

The first week, Tuesday, July 5 through Saturday, July 10, will focus on selecting monologues and proper audition preparation. The second week, Monday, July 25 through Friday, July 29, will delve into the art of two-person scenes. These intensives run 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Sven Johnson is a sophomore, the son of Pete and Deb Johnson.

Tech Ed teacher Jared Eichten says, “Sven excels in CAD class. He is skilled in handdone drafting. He helps other students like a teacher’s aide. He has a great attitude and enjoys a challenge.” Sven is on the baseball, cross country and trap shooting teams, is in band, choir and school plays. He mows lawns in the summer. In spare time he likes listening to music, playing video games and hunting. He is undecided about his future, but is considering carpentry. Having a sense of humor and working hard are important character traits to him. He admires his father because “he is patient, kind, and wise.”

Brennan Koball is Siren’s Student of the Week. He is the son of Wayne and Kathie Koball. He is a freshman who likes to play sports, swim, hunt, snowmobile, and fish. He is a hardworking, conscientious student who leads by example.

Brennan plays football, is on the ice fishing team, and will participate in track. He is also a percussionist in band and a member of the Student Council.

He plans to own his own business after high school.

Kristofer Tucker is Webster High School Student of the Week. Kristofer is a senior and son of Sheila Tucker. He is a great participant in classes. He brings great ideas to the table, which helps his peers think more and think critically. He comes to class with a positive attitude and always tries to prove. Kristofer is polite, with a positive personality and willingness to help others. He enjoys playing football, hunting, fishing and any outdoor activity.

After graduation he intends to join the military. Being polite is a character trait important to him.

“To me, it’s more than jut a legend,” he pointed out.

Anderson and some of his crew from Anderson’s Repair dove the lake about four years ago and discovered trees standing upright underwater but no train.

“The story we heard was there was a heavy rain that night, people heard the train whistle but the train never made it to town,” he related. “What they say happened is that a landslide took the track down and the train went into the lake.”

But they did find some artifacts.

“We found railroad track, we found a logbook, and a lantern — which means nothing in and of itself,” Anderson realized.

But that wasn’t the end of he story for Anderson.

“Just recently, someone got a hold of me and said ‘Let’s give it a try and see what we can come up with,’” he recalled.

And to that end, Anderson had decided it was time to bring a magnetometer to bear.

And not just any magnetometer.

A $30,000 magnetometer, shipped all the way from Washington state.

“At first we were thinking a submersible but now we’re just going to walk the lake and see if we can get a reading,” Anderson reported. “It’s basically a very effective metal detector.”

Contrary to what some might believe, the machine won’t show a picture of a train.

“The readings will show anomalies that would indicate a large metal object,” he continued.

The anticipation was palpable for Anderson and his crew last week as they prepared for Saturday’s adventure.

“We just want to take on the challenge to see whether it’s there or not,” he stated.

If they don’t see evidence of it being there, that’s the end of the search but if they do locate the train, all bets are off.

“It would open a whole different situation,” Anderson said. “I don’t even know if it could be salvageable — there’d be permits we’d need to get from the state, from the county, from the DNR and probably others.”

Northland Equipment Services from Clear Lake is the dive team Anderson Repair works with.

Results

“There was not as much as we would have liked,” Anderson said of Saturday’s search. “It was just not very conclusive.”

In fact, they got an okay from the company to keep the magnetometer an extra day and went back on Monday to walk a precise grid.

“It was the right idea — but inconclusive,” he reiterated. “We were told we had the best equipment so it should tell us something.”

But Anderson does have the results from the magnetometer, he just can’t read what the graphs tell him.

“Northwest Geophysics, the place which rented us the magnetometer, said they just rented the equipment and didn’t read the results but they could send names of certified map-readers — so we are waiting on them.”

Always the optimist, Anderson leans toward hearing some good news.

“It might mean absolutely nothing but that spike makes it look interesting,” he concluded.

Whether Anderson dives the lake again or drops the whole matter simply depends on what the results reveal.

Gymnasts sixth at state meet

WISCONSIN RAPIDS—A quality finish has overshadowed the slow start.

While the Grantsburg-Luck-Unity co-op girls gymnastics team desired a better start to the 201516 season, its finish was almost worthy of a top-five finish in last weekend’s WIAA Division 2 state finals in Wisconsin Rapids.

Jessee Lerud led GLU to a team total of 132.383 points in Saturday’s team final, placing them sixth in the final team standings and less than a half point from a top-5 finish.

“We’re very excited with the results,” GLU coach Kathy Lund said. “We started out strong and

we’re proud of our effort.”

Whitefish Bay finished ahead of multiple close battles for position in the team standings with 140.566 points, more than four points ahead of River Falls (135.883) in second place. Mount Horeb was third at 135.516; Viroqua-Cashton-North Crawford was fourth with 133.45 and Ashland was fifth with 132.75.

Lerud led GLU in each event for team scoring, including the uneven bars, which was its best group event. She scored a 9.383 to lead GLU to the fourth-highest point total in the event (32.65) and her mark was the best individual score in the team version of this event. She even topped Aly Yurkowitz of Whitefish Bay, who edged Lerud by less than a point for the Division 2 all-around indi-

vidual title.

GLU also was fifth in the team vault (34.667), sixth for the balance beam (31.817) and seventh in the floor exercise (33.25). Juniors Holly Fiedler, Erica Simmons and Morgan Pfaff, along with freshman Gracie Gerber, joined Lerud in the team competition for GLU. In individual competition, Lerud’s score of 9.35 topped the field for the uneven bars. She was over a point ahead of second-place Yurkowitz (9.183). Lund said this event win and second-place finish in all-around standings was a fitting finale for the senior.

“She had a rocky start to her season, but she’s finished strong and we’re so happy for her,” Lund said.

“We played really well early on, leading Washburn by a point with about 2:40 to go in the first half. Washburn put on a late first half surge to lead us 30-24 at halftime.”

“Washburn scored the first three baskets of the second half to push their lead to 12 points, and they were then a different team.

Washburn has two players that are exceptional scorers and three other starters that play with much more confidence and aggressiveness when their team is ahead. When Washburn got the 12 point lead, the lid came off of the basket for them and the lead instantly swelled to 20 after my last timeout.”

“I’m very proud of our boys!” said the coach.

“Neil came into the season needing 550 points as a senior to score 1,000. Last year, he averaged about 12.8 points a game. Coming into this season, with such a young team, I didn’t know if he would even have a chance to get great shots in games because I knew that other teams would put such a defensive effort on him and Aaron Ruud. His Dad asked me, as Aaron Ruud was getting close to his 1,000 points, how many Neil Junior was away from 1,000, and I remember thinking that it wasn’t even a realistic thought.”

Continued Coach Ruud, “It was right after we lost to Webster that Neil really started becoming a different player. The first 10 games of the season, Neil wouldn’t always finish, and left a lot of points on the floor. Even the night of the Webster loss, there were scoring opportunities inside that he kept missing.”

“The last 15 games of the season were different. Neil became a finisher! Neil averaged 27 points a game in the last 15 games of the season, and he did it against many quality teams. When you see great players, it almost seems like the game slows down for them on the floor, and that is exactly how it seemed when I was watching Neil. It seemed like he always knew when to shoot the outside three (point shot), or when to go inside and finish. I have only seen one other player have such a big mid-season turnaround, and that player was Waylon Buck from Frederic.”

“Neil and Waylon Buck were both great players as seniors, but something clicked for both of them as they got into January and they both elevated their games to a different level.”

Pirates’ season ends in Cameron

CAMERON—The Grantsburg Pirates headed to Cameron on Saturday night for a Regional Final match-up with a tough Comets team.

In the end, Cameron’s size and speed was too much for the Pirates to overcome as their season ended with a 74-49 loss.

“The anticipation of the game and the excitement of playing for another Regional title was irreplaceable, but Cameron was just too much for us toward the end of the first half,” Pirates coach Nick Hallberg said. “We hung with them for the majority of the first half, but they made that 8- or 10-point run to end the first half instead of us. It changes everything we wanted to continue to do when we go into the half down 17. Cameron shot the ball well from the perimeter, which was the difference early. It’d be nice to get those last four minutes of the first half back.”

Grantsburg kept the game close for much of the first half as the teams exchanged points back and forth. The Comets would hit a big shot, and the tenacious Pirates would keep battling until they answered with a big shot of their own.

SIREN—“The Frederic game was a great battle,” said Siren coach Jon Ruud following his team’s 5654 win over Frederic on Friday night.

“It was also a game of runs by each team. Frederic came out fast, and led us early on by a score of 114. We got into early foul trouble, and Logan Allen found himself on the bench by the 12 minute mark of the first half.”

Aaron Ruud and Neil Oustigoff scored the only points for the Dragons on a field goal apiece.

Jonah Tinman (six) and Austin Ennis (five) were the Viking scorers during that time frame.

“We then started drawing some fouls on them, and were able to climb back into the game. With about 4:30 to go in the first half, Poirier picked up his third foul. They took him out of the game, and we gambled and left Aaron Ruud on the floor with fouls. We pressed them without Poirier on the floor and were able to get a couple of baskets to take a 2723 halftime lead.”

Oustigoff scored one bucket and was two-for-two from the line. Dolan Highstrom got the other bucket.

“The second half was also a half of runs. We were the team that came out scoring, and pushed the lead up to 13 points. Kaanan Christianson and Logan Allen each hit big three pointers during this stretch.”

GRANTSBURG—The Grantsburg Pirates hosted the Abbotsford Falcons Friday night in the regional semi-finals, with the Pirates putting together a complete game to come away with the win, 66-53 to advance to regional final game on Saturday.

“We played with intensity and energy for 36 minutes, which is something we didn’t do on Tuesday,” Pirates coach Nick Hallberg said of his squad.

Grantsburg stepped up their offensive game and had a balanced scoring attack. Jackson Gerber got the highlight reel started, hitting three first half three-point buckets. Jaeger Staeven drove his way to the hoop scoring eight points. He also had an impressive night at the charity stripe, going four for four from the line in the first half.

Leo Chenal battled down low and scored six from the paint.

Jordan Knutson got his night started adding five to the team’s total. Austin Olson and John Chenal tagged up scoring two each to give the Pirates a 32-25 edge heading into the break.

During the second half, Grantsburg dialed up the defensive pressure and still found the hot hand on the offensive end of the court, outscoring the Falcons 34-28.

Gerber hit another big three-pointer as well as two from the foul line for a total of 14 points for the night.

Knutson added three this half with Tyler Stevens scoring his first two varsity points at the buzzer.

“Offensively we were balanced and were able to get the ball inside in the second half,” Hallberg said. “Abbotsford shot the ball better tonight than we expected they would, which is what kept the game close. We’d get up 8, 9, 10 points and they’d battle back and hit two or three big shots. It was a clean high school basketball game and our guys played well from start to finish.

“We’re moving on to tomorrow night’s Regional Final, but know we’ll be facing a solid Cameron team.”

The Pirates will head to Cameron on Saturday to take on the Comets for a chance to advance to Sectional play.

Lerud followed with a second-place finish in the vault (9.35), just .033 points behind Sam Krueger of River Falls in first.

Yurkowitz gained ground on Lerud in the balance beam and in the floor exercise. Yurkowitz was second on the beam with a 9.2 while Lerud placed sixth with 9.033 points; she also finished second in the floor (9.433) while Lerud was 12th (8.95).

The final tally gave Yurkowitz 37.15 points in all-around scoring while Lerud (36.683) was second, just .066 points ahead of third-place Shelby Rust of Ashland.

Jessee Lerud made her own history as the most distinguished gymnast for the Grantsburg Pirates. This four-time State Individual Qualifier ends her high school gymnastics’ career with a sweet success, setting the bar high, holding school records and the highest points scored in Grantsburg history. She has competed in 33 meets 30 as an All Around gymnasts won a total of 75 1st places, scored a total of 1,172.629 points. With perseverance and drive, team captain; Jessee Lerud motivated her teammates to State.

“We were extremely excited to compete at the State Competition in Wisconsin Rapids,” said Coach Kathy Lund. “Our first event was the balance beam, same as our Sectional meet.

Our warm-up went pretty good, but once competition start, I don’t think we really were prepared for the roaring continuous noise. Jessee Lerud was the only gymnast to have a stick routine.”

“After sitting two rounds, we competed on floor. We did better on this event, but it wasn’t until vault that we started to get our momentum going. We had great vault!” exclaimed the coach.

“The end of the game was Frederic making a push back,” commented Coach Ruud. “Roman Poirier played like a senior who did not want his career to come to an end. He hit for 13 points down the stretch including three 25 foot shots. We went to the line

and missed seven consecutive free throws down the stretch.”

“Luckily for us, Frederic missed a shot with time running out and we were able to strip the ball from a Frederic player as time ran out.”

Neil Oustigoff led the Dragons with 19 points, followed by Ruud with 15 points and Christianson with 13 points.

“I was happy with our defense on their two seniors. We held (Austin) Ennis to seven points and struggled to hold (Roman) Poirier to 17 points. “I thought that Tinman played great for Frederic as well.”

Elsie Mae Benson, 94, of Websster, passed away Monday, Feb. 229, 2016.

A memorial service was held T Tuesday evening, March 8, a at Swedberg-Taylor Funeral H Home. Pastor Steve Ward ofďŹ c ciated.

Elsie was born in Bass Lake T Township, Washburn County, o on Jan. 23, 1922, daughter of W Wilhelmina â&#x20AC;&#x153;Minnieâ&#x20AC;? (Ziemke) a and William Wallace Parkhill.

Her family lived in various places when she was a child. In 1928, they lived at Lake 19 in Taylor County, WI, and in 1936, they moved to Oblong, IL. Elsie told many stories of her helping on the family farm, including driving a team of horses in the farm ďŹ elds.

Elsie left the farm when World War II started. She went to work for Curtiss-Wright Airplane Division at Lambert Field, St. John (St. Louis County), Missouri.

In late summer of 1944, she moved to Stillwater, MN. On Oct. 5, 1945, Elsie married Lloyd J. Benson in Stillwater.

They moved to the Webster area in 1948 and built a home on Pike Bend Road, a dirt road close to Clam River Dam. They had no electricity and relied on kerosene lamps and an icebox for several years. Lloyd passed away Sept. 23, 1984. Elsie remained in her home until January of this year, when she became a resident of the Continuing Care Center at Burnett Medical Center in Grantsburg.

Elsie took great pleasure in being a 4-H leader for many years. She was also a longtime member of the Happy Homemakers Club. She provided day care provider in her home for the many children who still fondly call her â&#x20AC;&#x153;Grandma Elsie.â&#x20AC;? She would create lessons for the children to get them ready for their ďŹ rst year of school. The school teachers knew which children were from â&#x20AC;&#x153;Grandma Elsieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s school.â&#x20AC;?

Elsie greatly enjoyed cooking and baking. In fact, for most of her life she cooked and canned over a wood stove.

Elsie also had a great love for gardening. She managed a huge vegetable garden, and did a lot of canning to provide for the family through the winter. She loved tending her many ďŹ&#x201A;ower beds around the yard. Her greatest love though, was for her family. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much.

Elsie is survived by her four sons and spouses: Wallace (Carol) Benson, Calvin Benson, Bruce (Ruth) Benson, and Stefan (Deb) Benson; grandchildren: Danyel (Mike) Olson, Eric (Caira) Benson, and Kristofor (ďŹ ancĂŠ Autumn) Benson, Brad Benson, Marilla Benson, (step-granddaughter) Bridget Meriweather, Zac (Lisa) Benson, Chelsie (Jay) Moss, and Ian McKay; and sixteen great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by four sisters: Norma Montpetit, Florence Ritzer, Lila Tripp, and Darlene Tillia; and numerous nieces and nephews, and their families.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Lloyd Benson; siblings and spouses: Ruth (Henry) Bradow, Kay (Earl) Rohda, William (Charlotte) Parkhill, Alvin (Eleanor) Parkhill, Alrex (Helen) Parkhill, and Rosceal (Harold) Hallen; brothers-in-law: Tom Montpetit, Bill Ritzer, Harold â&#x20AC;&#x153;Redâ&#x20AC;? Tripp, and Gene Tillia; and step-granddaughter, Nichole Caturia.

Margaret Lois Asp, 84, of Jackson Township, Burnett County, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2016.

The funeral service for Margaret was held Monday, March 7 at First Baptist Church of Webster with Pastor Tim Quinn ofďŹ ciating. Interment was at Jackson Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Kevin Bruss, Dan Gage, Rick Lampson, Leo Maslow, Dion Packer and Carl Radke.

Margaret was born April 23, 1931, in Jackson Township, daughter of Roy Daniel and Jennie Clarissa (Hayden) Radke. She attended schools in Jackson Township and Webster, graduating in 1950 from Webster High School.

On June 20, 1953, Margaret was united in marriage to Harvey Lewis Asp at the First Baptist Church of Webster. He passed away on Nov. 16, 1998.

A selďŹ&#x201A;ess, giving and thrifty woman, Margaret took great pride in her role as homemaker, wife and mother. She was an excellent cook and a superb seamstress.

She also enjoyed embroidery and crochet. Margaret took personal satisfaction in her vegetable gardens and loved tending her ďŹ&#x201A;owers.

She is survived by three children: Nancy J. Osborn, Darlene M. (Dan L.) Peterson, and Paul H. Asp; three grandchildren: Amy S. (Kevin) Bruss, Robert D. Peterson, and Alan M. Peterson; brother, George M. (Jean) Radke; nephew, Carl R. (Sue) Radke; and numerous other cousins and nephews. Margaret is preceded in death by her husband, Harvey, and a granddaughter, Christina Osborn.

Luella Smith Luella Mae (Dumjohn) Smith, 92, of Meenon Township Burnett County, passed away March 2, 2016 at Burnett Medical Continuing Care in Grantsburg.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 8, at Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home in Webster, with Pastor Brian Pardun ofďŹ ciating. Pallbearers were John and Joe Mulroy, Brandon Smith, Ryan Suko, Larissa Bartheidel, and Nikki Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Smith, Douglas Cullen, Butch Olson, and Donn Goodearle.

Luella was born Aug. 2, 1923, in Webster, the youngest daughter of Gus and Bertha (Vogt) Dumjohn. She spent her younger days on the family farm on County Road A in Webster.

Luella married Byron Dennis Smith on June 22, 1953 in Pine City, MN. Together they raised three children; Janna, Roger, and Jim. Most of her life was spent in the Webster area, except for some time in Montana, Forest Center, MN and in Cozy Corners while Byron was logging.

Luella was a full-time mom and homemaker. She worked at the Stokely Vegetable Plant in Frederic a few years during the canning season.

Luella loved having her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids around her. She loved search-a-word puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, visits from friends, having a good laugh and a enjoying a glass of German wine at Thanksgiving.

She is survived by her children, Janna (Bill), Roger (Brenda) Smith, Jim (Peggy) Smith; grandchildren, John (Brenda) Mulroy, Joe Mulroy, Brandon (Danielle) Smith, Nikki Smith (Ryan Suko), and Larissa Bartheidel; great-grandchildren, Cybil, Allison, Morgan, Caleb, Aubrie, Brennan and Colton; and many relatives and friends.

I read an article the other day about a person who decided to make a sandwich from scratch.

Now, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean that this person took the usual things that make up a sandwich like bread and baloney and lettuce and cheese or whatever usually goes into a sandwich.

I mean this person started from scratch. The person took ocean water to make salt. The person milked a cow, grew vegetables. The article indicated that the person working from scratch made a sandwich, something we generally turn out in a few minutes. It took this person six months and $1,500 dollars to accomplish the feat, and another source indicated it was not a very good sandwich.

The concluding remarks were that this was not very efďŹ cient.

What we can do together is so much more efďŹ cient than what we can do individually. Someone said a very wise thing when they commented that when Jesus said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Where two or three are gathered in my name there I am in the midst of themâ&#x20AC;? , it was not a maximum number but a minimum.

If you have a child who will be FIVE before Sept. 1 and entering Kindergarten who did not attend the Pre-K Tiny Tiger Program, please call to schedule an appointment. Registration for your child will be with the Kindergarten team on March 31st.

Grantsburg School District has scheduled kindergarten registration for the 2016-2017 school year on Tuesday, April 5, 2016. It will be held in the Nelson Primary School gym at 10:30 AM, 12:15 PM, and 6:30 PM. Parents may attend any session. These sessions are designed for parents only. Please call the elementary school ofďŹ ce at 715-463-2320 if you cannot attend.

Kindergarten registration is intended for children who will enter school in the fall of 2016. Children eligible for kindergarten placement must be ďŹ ve years old on or before September 1, 2016.

Kindergarten for 2016-2017 will be a developmental, activity-based program with a full day/every day schedule. Successful completion of 5-year-old Kindergarten is required prior to admission to ďŹ rst grade.
