Republicans COUNTRY sweep local and state races

It was a clean sweep for the Republican party in Polk County on Nov. 8, with candidates winning all races in the county. Donald Trump’s win in Wisconsin put him over the top in the electoral college, defying the polls and making the businessman the 45th President of the United States. Trump won the electoral college vote 290-232 but lost the popular vote receiving 60,375,961 votes, 47.3 percent to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s 61,047,207, 47.8 percent. Trump was the first Republican presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan in 1984 to win Wisconsin, leading a GOP wave in the state over Democrats who were widely expected to make gains both in the Statehouse and Congress. Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson won re-election in a rematch with Democratic former Sen. Russ Feingold, Sean Duffy won reelection to the House and Republicans also increased their majorities in the state Legislature. The GOP’s wins continued on the county level as well, with Jeff Kemp defeating incumbent Polk County District Attorney Dan Steffen and Sharon Jorgenson beating Mary Jo Hacker for the open Polk County Clerk position. Polk County Treasurer Amanda Nissen and Register of Deeds Sally Spanel ran unopposed. Trump received 1,409,467 votes in the state, 47.9 percent. Clinton had 1,382,210 votes statewide, 46.9 percent. Trump defeated Clinton in every

Amery now is on the map, this time for a different reason. A new Little Free Library is open for business on Keller Ave., in front of Worn Again. Another Little Free Library is located at Amery Hospital & Clinic. The Little Free Library is a global movement “to promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide and to build a

sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations.” A small wooden box with glass doors houses over a dozen books. Anyone may borrow a book or donate a book to the library. The Worn Again location received their kit and $200 worth of books, according to Executive Director Kris Dodge.
